PUB patrons can nab a free pint at a major chain for select days during the month of April – but there’s a catch.
Greene King has announced the initiative, which will see them give away 100,00 pints free of charge.

The offer will see customers enjoy a free pint at the first drop of rain from April 3 to 10.
It will apply for 48 hours after the time it rains, with a limit of one pint per person.
Greene King has installed rain detectors in six beer gardens located in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, and Wallingford in Oxfordshire.
If any of these register rain, punters will be able to go to any of the 1,3000 locations and redeem the deal.
Simply walk up to the bar and say: “It’s raining, can I have a free pint?”
Customers can check Greene King’s website, as well as their Instagram or Facebook pages, to see when the deal has been triggered.
So for once, Brits may find themselves hoping for bad weather when going for a pint.
The offer is intended to boost patronage during the quieter spring months.
So come rain, hail, or shine, people can enjoy a pint in at their local Greene King pub.
“Pub gardens have always been the heart of British social life, places where friends gather, stories are shared, and good times flow as freely as the pints,” said Zoe Bowley, managing director at Greene King pubs.
“Good times are almost guaranteed – if only the unpredictable weather didn’t add a plot twist, turning a simple jacket decision into a classic British dilemma.
“We can’t guarantee the weather, but with our ‘When It Rains, We Pour’ promise, we’re encouraging people to embrace those April showers and make the most of every moment.”
Greene King carried out research which revealed that nearly a third (31%) of Brits dash inside from the beer garden at the first sign of bad weather.
One in five people admit to wearing sunglasses and their winter coats at the same time to ensure they’re prepared for all weather conditions during the spring.
The chain’s initiative is being promoted by Gavin and Stacey actor Larry Lamb, who describes a beer garden as a “sanctuary away from the chaos of every day”.
NHS guidelines on drinking alcohol

To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level if you drink most weeks:
- men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis
- spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week
- if you want to cut down, try to have several drink-free days each week
If you’re pregnant or think you could become pregnant, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all to keep risks to your baby to a minimum.

And while the saying might be “April Showers”, statistics found that the UK receives an average of 11 days of rainfall during the month.
So fingers crossed that at least on these falls during the seven day offer.
According to the Met Office, 2024 saw one of the wettest Aprils in recent history.
The month saw 55% more rainfall than the average April, so this year may be a repeat.
