Ed Miliband plotting ANOTHER eco levy which will send household energy bills even higher

ED Miliband is plotting to clobber Brits with another eco levy which will hit their energy bills, The Sun on Sunday can reveal.

The bombshell revelation piles more pressure on the government’s Net Zero targets which are being blamed for choking off economic growth.

The Energy Secretary is consulting on plans for a new levy on gas shippers to bankroll  the rollout of hydrogen.

In official documents, his department admits: “It is our assumption that gas shippers, and suppliers, will pass on costs directly to their customers.”

Under current plans the levy would be up to £4.50 a year.

But experts warned this could just be the tip of the iceberg and will get hiked to nearly 10 times as much when more hydrogen projects come online.

Andrew Bowie, the Tory acting shadow energy secretary, said: “Once again Labour’s plans are adding costs to British bill payers.

“They promised to bring down bills by £300 in the election. But now every action being taken by Ed Miliband is adding to the cost of bills.

“We need a reset on Net Zero. Costs need to come down.”

Mr Miliband is already under pressure over his dash for Net Zero.

He promised to slash energy bills by £300 – but they have rocketed since he took over the brief.

A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said: “The consultation has been live for nine weeks.

“Hydrogen production will help homes and businesses off the rollercoaster of fossil fuel price spikes, and create thousands of new jobs across the country.

“There will be no impact on bills before 2027, when we expect costs to be approximately £2.60 to £4.50 a year.

“The only way to guarantee our energy security and bring down bills for good is by moving towards homegrown power.”
