AIRBUS is “in talks” with a plane seat designer that wants to put double-decker seats in economy.
Revealed by aviation start up Chaise Longue back in 2021, they are yet to be launched on commercial flights.

Airbus is in discussion with plane seat designer Chaise Longue who has double-decker designs[/caption]
Passengers at the bottom might feel a bit cramped – but there is more legroom[/caption]
But that could soon change, thanks to new discussions.
Chaise Longue CEO Alejandro Núñez Vicente told CNN Travel that they were “exploring some early stage concepts” with the aircraft giant.
He added that Airbus could “see the potential of two-level seating”.
Rather than removing all economy seats, he said revealed plans for a cabin with the double-decker ‘cabin’ surrounded by rows of other traditional seats.
He said: “With the support from Airbus this is a realistic and achievable objective that will greatly improve travel for passengers.”
While an Airbus spokesperson confirmed discussions, they said it was in an “early phase level” .
A timeline on them being rolled out is yet to be confirmed, but won’t be for a while.
The double-decker design would see two levels of seat in in economy.
Passengers will be able to choose between the top or bottom row, with the lower row having more legroom.
Despite this, the top row would have “larger recline angles and leg-stretching possibilities”.
The taller seats mean the overhead lockers would be removed, with space underneath the seats for suitcases.
They aren’t the only double-decker plane seats being created.
Zephyr Aerospace’s plane seat design would also offer two rows, with one on top of the other.
The only difference would be the format, which would be a 2-4-2 plan.
Another unusual design would see cabins with no middle seats.
Created by Spanish design company Taller De Arquitectura T36, the cabins would be split across two levels, with three section.
And some airlines are even ditching reclining seats.
Here are some other plane designs of the future, including “underwater” cabins.
