We live in UK’s ‘THIRD WORLD city’ – it’s like a ‘war zone’ with ‘major incident’ declared over festering street rubbish

BIRMINGHAM is quickly transforming into a “third world city”, according to residents impacted by the ongoing bin strikes which has left 17,000 tonnes of rubbish on the streets.

A major incident was declared this week by Birmingham City Council after the industrial action left mountains of uncollected waste piled high across the city.

Members of the Unite union have been on all-out strike since March 11 in a dispute over pay and job losses.

Brummies say the row has left many areas looking like a “war zone” and a “third world country” and they now fear for their health.

Locals have previously reported “rats the size of cats” scurrying around their neighbourhoods while stray cats and foxes also tear open bags in search of food.

Shocking photos over the last few weeks have shown mountains of filthy fly-tipped rubbish and overflowing bin bags strewn across the second city.

The city’s “rat man” – pest control expert Will Timms – said his phone is ringing off the hook.

The owner of WJ Pest Solutions is “absolutely shattered” after working non-stop for two-and-a-half months.

“There’s a real sense of disbelief about the scale of what’s happening here. I’ve been doing this for 11 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” he told the i Paper.

“The rats are not only getting bigger, but they’re also getting bolder, venturing into people’s homes and even destroying cars.”

Dad-of-two Emil Laursen, 34, of Balsall Heath, said bankrupt Birmingham was becoming a “joke” as the bin strike chaos continued.

He said: “We can’t believe it has been allowed to get to this point, it has become a public health issue for sure.

“We are fast transforming into a third world city. The place is becoming a joke. It had worked for years to shake off this label of being a dump.

“But just look at the streets now. It has literally become a makeshift dump. We’re back to being laughing stock.

“We’ve seen some amazing community spirit with people helping to clear the mess but others have just dumped bags anywhere and everywhere.

“Some are taking no pride in the area and the affect has been these scenes of absolute carnage, like a war zone. The whole situation is a mess, quite literally.”

Mazar Dad is a former senior manager at a Birmingham waste depot and now works for the charity Mecc Trust in Balsall Heath.

The 56-year-old said: “The problem has got tremendously worse week by week.

“The rat population has increased, you’ve got cats and foxes roaming the streets ripping open bags for food.

“It is just appalling there has been no adequate contingency plan put in place and now we have tonnes of waste on the streets.

“There’s been all the talk of it costing millions in equal pay claims but nobody seems to be talking about how many millions it will cost just to clear the streets up.

“If the strikes ended tomorrow it would still take months and months to shift the rubbish caused by this fiasco.

“There’s all sorts of implications, you’ve got the health issues as it gets warmer. You’ll see even more rats. And then there’s the economical impact on the city too.

“We have elected members and people in highly-paid jobs managing these services so it’s disgraceful it’s been allowed to come to this.

“I ran a depot a few years ago and at the last strikes in 2017 the council put these new job roles in place but they have just been terribly mismanaged since.

“We definitely need central government intervention, I cannot believe it has been allowed to get to this stage.”

Mumtaz Khadim, a butcher at Al Bodr supermarket in Balsall Heath, said: “I think it’s ridiculous, somebody needs to come and pick this up.

“As a community we are all together as one but nobody is helping us out.

“It’s no good for the health plus, we have children here going to school and they have to see all this. The situation is just no good for anybody.”

Birmingham City Council said actions on the picket line had been blocking contingency vehicles from getting out of the depot to collect what rubbish they could.

They said a major incident needed to be declared following “rising concerns of risks to public health and damage to our environment”.

Councillor John Cotton, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “It’s regrettable that we have had to take this step, but we cannot tolerate a situation that is causing harm and distress to communities across Birmingham.

“I respect the right to strike and protest, however actions on the picket line must be lawful and sadly the behaviour of some now means we are seeing a significant impact on residents and the city’s environment.

“Unless we declare a major incident and deploy the waste service’s contingency plan, then we would be unable to clear the backlog of waste on the streets or improve the frequency of collections.

Rats the size of cats roam the streets

By Tracey Kandohla & Freya Parsons

THERE are rats the size of cats in this UK city and mountains of rubbish along the streets.

Residents have complained that the area “stinks” and you can’t turn a corner without tripping over heaps of waste.

Huge rats plaguing rubbish-riddled Birmingham amidst the bin worker’s strike are terrifying locals as the industrial action, which started early this year, continues.

The clash between waste collector’s union Unite and Birmingham City Council over the scrapping of a “safety-critical role” and pay cuts has led to indefinite strikes.

Overflowing bins have caused utter carnage, with chaos set to “worsen”, taxi drivers are warning.

As residents, workers and shoppers desperately try to avoid the vermin-hit streets, cabbie Abid Hussain said: “The garbage is piling up, the vermin are coming out. It is disgusting!

“The city is filthy, it stinks. It is a health issue and the situation will only get worse.”

The driver of 32 years slammed authorities for allowing Britain’s second biggest city to “go to the rats.”

Abid, speaking exclusively to The Sun, sighed: “It should never have come to this. People are terrified to come out.

“No one wants to see rats scurrying around all the un-emptied bins and the rubbish dumped in streets, alleyways and gardens.

“It is a terrible advert for the city where I have worked for more than three decades. I am a barometer for Birmingham and this is the worst it gets.”

“I want to thank residents for their continued patience under difficult circumstances and the community groups who have been working hard within their communities to help with clear-up.

“I would reiterate that we have made a fair and reasonable offer to our workers which means none of them have to lose any money and I would urge Unite to reconsider their position.”

Unite said the major incident declaration was an “attempt to crush any opposition to attacks on jobs, pay and conditions”.

General secretary Sharon Graham said: “Birmingham council could easily resolve this dispute but instead it seems hellbent on imposing its plan of demotions and pay cuts at all costs.

“If that involves spending far more than it would cost to resolve the strike fairly, they don’t seem to care.

“We can only conclude that this massive pay cut for hundreds of refuse workers is only the start and this is really about stamping out any future opposition to its plans to unleash austerity 2.0 on Birmingham.

“I urge Birmingham council to rethink this disastrous strategy and to find a way forward that doesn’t involve workers and communities having to pay for politicians’ mistakes.

“Unite will never accept attacks on our members and we will continue to defend Birmingham’s refuse workforce to the hilt.”

Birmingham City Council did not wish to comment further when approached by The Sun.

Easy ‘no brainer’ TV Licence rule that could save you £174 a year as bills rise

AN easy TV Licence trick could help thousands of households save up to £196 a year before the upcoming price hike.

The cost of a standard colour TV Licence increased from £169.50 to £174.50 a year yesterday.

An easy TV Licence rule could save you just over £174 a year

Additionally, the price of a black and white licence increased from £57 to £58.50.

This isn’t the only household bill to have surged during what many are calling “Awful Apri” – check out The Sun’s series for more details.

However, some people might not need to pay for a TV licence at all, which could mean huge savings.

Anyone who wants to watch live TV including the BBC, ITV and Sky needs to pay for a TV licence otherwise, they will be breaking the law.

But, under current rules, certain groups are exempt.

For example, if you’re claiming pension credit and are over the age of 75, you qualify for a free licence, meaning you could save £174.50 a year.

Over 903,000 people over the age of 75 currently claim pension credit, according to the DWP’s latest statistics.

But not everyone is claiming their free TV licence as it’s not automatic.

The government also estimates that a further 760,000 people over 66 aren’t pension credit even though they’re eligible.

This means hundreds of thousands of households are potentially missing out on the over-75s free TV licence.

You can also get a free licence if your partner claims pension credit but you do not.

To apply for a free TV licence, visit tvlicensing.co.uk/cs/pay-for-your-tv-licence.

Alternatively, you can call 0300 790 6071 and apply over the phone.

What is pension credit?

Pension credit gives you extra money if you claim the state pension and are on a low income.

If you live alone and your weekly income is below £227.10, or if you live with a partner and both are of state pension age with a combined weekly income below £346.60, you should qualify.

However, if your income is slightly higher, you might still be eligible for pension credit if you have a disability, you care for someone, you have savings or you have housing costs.

You could get an extra £82.90 a week if you have a disability or claim any of the following:

  • Attendance allowance
  • The middle or highest rate from the care component of disability living allowance (DLA)
  • The daily living component of personal independence payment (PIP)
  • Armed forces independence payment
  • The daily living component of adult disability payment (ADP) at the standard or enhanced rate.

You could get the “savings credit” part of pension credit if both of the following apply:

  • You reached State Pension age before April 6, 2016
  • You saved some money for retirement, for example, a personal or workplace pension

This part of pension credit is worth £17.30 for single people or £19.36 for couples.

Pension credit opens the door to other support, including housing benefitscost of living payments, council tax reductions and the Winter Fuel Payment.

APPLY FOR PENSION CREDIT

YOU can start your application for pension credit up to four months before you reach state pension age.

You can apply any time after you reach state pension age but your application can only be backdated by three months.

This means you can get up to three months of pension credit in your first payment if you were eligible during that time.

To apply, you’ll need the following information about you and your partner if you have one:

  • National Insurance number
  • Information about any income, savings and investments you have
  • Information about your income, savings and investments on the date you want to backdate your application to

You’ll also need your bank account details. Depending on how you apply, you may also be asked for your bank or building society name, sort code and account number.

Applications can be made online by visiting gov.uk/pension-credit/how-to-claim.

If you’d prefer to apply over the phone, you can do so by calling the pension credit claim line on 0800 99 1234.

But any savvy savers must remember to unsubscribe to any subscriptions before the end of the trial period or risk incurring further charges.

Customers can also nab a free trial of streaming services when buying new technology.

TV LICENCE NEED-TO-KNOWS

IF you want to watch or record live TV, you need a TV licence.

Live TV includes all programmes on any channel, including soaps, series, documentaries and even movies.

The rules apply even if you don’t watch the shows on an actual TV – for example, if you watch programmes that are being broadcast live on a PC, laptop, tablet or phone.

A colour TV licence currently costs £169.50 a year. A licence for watching a black and white TV costs £57.

You can legally use on-demand TV services (apart from BBC iPlayer) as long as you aren’t using them to stream live TV without a TV licence.

This includes streaming catch-up content on ITV Player, All 4, My5, BT Vision/BT TV, Virgin Media, Sky Go, Now TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

You also don’t need a TV licence to watch video clips that aren’t live through services such as YouTube.

Who are Val Kiler and Joanne Whalley’s children Jack and Mercedes?

VAL Kilmer was a cinema icon who rocketed to fame with his role as Tom Kazansky in Top Gun.

Sadly, the star passed away on April 1, 2025, leaving behind his two children Jack and Mercedes.

Father of two

Val shared his two children with his ex-wife Joanna Whalley.

Joanne is an actress from Salford who met Val on the set of their 1987 film Willow.

They split amicably in 1996, just months after their son was born.

Val’s first daughter

Mercedes was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on October 29, 1991.

She became an actress and a producer and is known for her roles in Paydirt (2020), Ingrid (2015) and Prettyface (2016).

In the heist movie Paydirt, she appeared alongside Val and even played his daughter in the movie.

Mercedes is an advocate for making Hollywood more inclusive, something inspired by her father’s own health battle.

She said: “Hiring more disabled actors only enlivens the work and inspires more different kinds of communication.”

Val’s son Jack

Jack was born on June 6, 1995, and grew up in Los Angeles, California.

His real name is actually John – a reference to his mother’s name of Joanne.

Jack followed his parents into show-business and landed his first major role in the 2013 film.

He is also known for playing Pelle “Dead” Ohlin in Lords Of Chaos, before starring in The Man in The Wood and Body Brokers.

Jack has described himself as a musician and a model, starring as Ozzy Osbourne himself in the rock legend’s Under the Graveyard music video.

Val’s tragic passing

Val sadly passed away on April 1, 2025, after a long health battle.

He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2013 and was forced to speak using a voice box, following surgery.

Despite his health struggles, he was able to star in Top Gun once more in the 2022 revival Maverick.

Jack and Mercedes were featured in the 2021 film Val, which followed the actor’s cancer battle.

As Val was unable to speak for the film’s voiceover, Jack played his father in the film.

Val died after complications from pneumonia in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.

My girl, 13, was sexting a secret boyfriend and being groomed after I gave in and bought her a phone

[/boxout]

I realise I made mistakes. Giving her a smartphone too soon was one.

And then failing to implement any controls and spyware, because I didn’t think I needed to.

Looking back, I was very slack with the whole phone thing. But I’m not very technical, which isn’t helpful.

I also hadn’t noticed how withdrawn Sophie had become. She’d been showing subtle signs all along – things like being in her bedroom more and talking to us less.

The school’s response was shocking and they immediately defended the boys we’d found on Sophie’s phone.

Julie Carter mum

Sophie became a different girl when we took her phone away. She confessed she knew immediately that she’d be happier without it.

If she wants to go online, she uses our shared family laptop. She does her homework there too. She’s never said she feels like she’s missing out on anything.

She started reading again and wasn’t rushing her dinner so she could run upstairs to her room to use her phone. It has freed up so much time in her life and she recognises this.

I just hope other mothers can learn from my mistakes.

Resisting a child’s demands for a smartphone will be stressful, for sure, and they may temporarily hate you for it.

But that’s nothing compared to the truly terrifying situations you might find yourselves in further down the line.

Brit tennis star collapses mid-match and leave court in wheelchair in terrifying scenes

BRITISH tennis star Fran Jones was forced to retire from her Copa Colsanitas first-round match after collapsing on the court.

The 24-year-old was about to serve in the final set of her match against Julia Riera when she became disorientated and fell to the ground.

She promptly received treatment from nearby medics before being taken off in a wheelchair.

A statement was subsequently released by tournament organisers.

It read: “Due to a physical issue, Francesca Jones has withdrawn from her match against Julia Riera at 6-2 5-7 5-3 in favour of the Argentinian.

“We wish the British tennis player a speedy recovery.”

Jones had appeared to be struggling with her breathing at times during the deciding set of the first-round clash.

She had won the opening set 6-2 before losing the second 7-5 to Riera.

The Brit was trailing 5-3 in the decider before she collapsed.

Jones is currently ranked world No129 in women’s singles.

She achieved a career-high ranking of 123 last month.

The 24-year-old defied the odds to become a professional tennis player.

She was born without two fingers and three toes due to a rare medical condition called Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia Syndrome.

Doctors previously told Jones to give up on her tennis career, but she has since featured at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

She is yet to make it past qualifying at the US Open or French Open.

Jones is also friends with Emma Raducanu and the pair have represented Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup.
