World’s most dangerous toy goes on sale for £3k in time for Christmas allowing kids to do RADIOACTIVE tests in bedrooms
THE world’s most dangerous toy that contains real radioactive substances is going on sale for £3,000.
The atomic energy kit from 1950 contains actual uranium and allows kids to conduct radioactive experiments in their bedrooms.
Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Laboratory, dubbed “the world’s most dangerous toy”, has gone up for sale at auction in Boston[/caption] The kit was intended to be an educational toy that would boost youth interest in atomic energy[/caption]The toy was created at the request of the US government in order to boost youth interest in atomic energy, but production was halted after just a year due to safety concerns and government restrictions.
Only around 5,000 of the radioactive kits were ever sold, and now a rare complete example has gone up for sale at a Boston auction as part of a Fine Autographs and Artifacts event.
The Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Laboratory was dubbed one of the “10 most dangerous toys of all time” in 2006 by Radar Magazine.
The kits were originally sold for £39 – which is over £500 in today’s money.
The toy was first marketed as an educational science experiment, created by American inventor Alfred Carlton Gilbert who also designed the iconic erection constructor toys
The kit contains four kinds of minerals – autunite, carnotite, tobernite and uraninite – which all contain the radioactive element uranium.
Radiation emitted by the uranium as it decays can damage human tissue and DNA, and leads to an increased risk of cancer.
A Geiger-Mueller counter, used to measure radioactivity, is included along with a device to visualise the radiation on a screen.
There is a cloud chamber, which creates visible tracks to allow the kids to see the paths of the particles whizzing past at 12,000 miles per second.
The successful bidder will also claim the original “Gilbert Atomic Energy Annual”, and a comic book about a scientist called “Dagwood Splits the Atom”.
The Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Laboratory was discontinued in 1951 due to poor sales and safety concerns.
The small number of kits produced means it has been a popular collector’s item in recent decades.
This example of the kit also comes with a piece of history from the company that made it.
It includes a letter dated September 25, 1953, from the Gilbert Company that reads: “We regret exceedingly to advise you that we have discontinued manufacturing this Laboratory.
“It was very difficult to obtain some of the materials and also due to Government Restrictions.”
Despite the safety concerns that stopped production, a 2020 review in the magazine IEEE Spectrum said that the radiation risk from the toy was about the same as spending a day in the sun – as long as the samples remained in their containers.
If the substances were removed from their protective casings, the radioactive output could be much higher.
The auction is live until December 12, and the price currently sits at $3,045.
What are the effects of radiation exposure?
Patrick Harrington
Radiation is the release of energy or particles from radioactive materials.
Many naturally-occurring materials are radioactive, so we are all exposed to a certain level every day.
Exposure to high levels of radiation can cause a number of long-term health effects.
High levels of exposure may cause damage to living tissues and organs, although the effects depend on the dose.
The most risky kind of exposure is a high dose in a short period of time, which can cause “radiation sickness”.
This impacts the functioning of organs, and can involve nausea, vomiting, skin redness, hair loss and radiation burns.
These symptoms are incredibly rare, and only likely to happen after an event such as a nuclear emergency.

Trainer Jimmy Mangan said his stable star needs ease in the ground to be seen at his best.
And with Fact To File set to stay in Ireland over Christmas, rain in England could see Spillane’s Tower head over for the Boxing Day blockbuster.
McManus said on TV on Sunday: “I’d like to have one of them at least running at Christmas in Leopardstown and we’ll have to talk to Willie (Mullins) and Jimmy Mangan before deciding.
“I’d maybe like to go to Kempton with Spillane’s Tower but he’d like the ground soft and you have to supplement him so you have to make your mind up a week in advance.
“The forecast will play a big part in it.
“Corbetts Cross would also like a little juice in the ground, so it’s very hard to say where you are going when you don’t know exactly what the ground is going to be like.”

Monty Don left with no power and surrounded by flooding after Storm Darragh batters home as fans send support
MONTY Don has been left with no power and hit by flooding after Storm Darragh battered his home.
Gardeners’ World fans sent their support for the BBC Two presenter took to social media with a number of ‘concerning’ posts.
Fans of Monty Don were left concerned after he admitted he was left with no power after his hospital dash[/caption] The BBC Two star took to Instagram as he showed just how flooded his Longmeadow grounds were[/caption] He lit the fireplace in his countryside home to try and stay warm[/caption]Monty, 69, posted several photos onto his Instagram as he detailed the effect of Storm Darragh on his home.
In the first post, the horticulturalist showed how close the flooding was to his Longmeadow estate.
He stood from the second floor of his abode as the water completely flooded the garden below, reaching halfway up the gate.
The gardening expert sarcastically captioned the picture: “Morning.”
In a second post he took a picture of his cosy kitchen area, which contained a roaring fireplace for warmth.
The caption for this post read: “Floods outside, wind still rampaging and no power until tomorrow earliest, so hunkering down with candles and fires.”
His third post showed his kitchen table covered with candles as he entertained himself with newspaper crosswords.
Monty’s tablet device was also getting charged by a mobile power bank which sat amongst the candelabras which he used to light the room.
This was as the fire continued to blaze in the background as he attempted to keep warm.
The caption read: “Settling in for the evening.”
His fans flooded all of the posts with concerned comments for the star as he battled to save his home.
“Looks very Tudor,” stated one fan.
A second stated: “Best of luck.”
Meanwhile, someone else exclaimed: “Glad you’re tucked up in the warm. Take care x”
The rise and rise of Monty Don
SINCE bursting onto our TV screens in Gardeners' World in the early noughties, Monty Don has been a much-loved star.
Before finding fame on TV, and together with his wife Sarah, Monty set up a lucrative jewellery business in the early 80s.
Monty then joined the popular BBC show as presenter in 2003, taking over from the out going Alan Titchmarsh, and has been there ever since.
Every since he burst onto the scene, he has become a familiar face on the box.
Away from Gardeners’ World he is also known for Monty Don’s Italian Gardens, as well as the French, American and Japanese versions of the show.
Monty also hosted The Secret History of the British Garden
And a fourth user commented: “Oh dear Monty it reached the garden.”
And another fan added: “I hope for safety.”
However, many other users thought his home looked ‘cosy’ and ‘inviting’ as they admired his stunning cottage home.
Another said: “Welcoming. Love the natural flagstones!”

As an additional user wrote: “That looks so inviting.”
“But it looks cosy , hunker down and stay safe xx,” remarked a eighth user,
And someone else added: “You have a beautiful home!”, with a red heart emoji.
This comes after fans were concerned when the broadcaster was rushed to hospital.
Who is Monty Don's wife Sarah?
Monty met his wife Sarah while studying at university and they married on July 29, 1983.
The pair ran their own couture costume jewellery business from the early 80s to 1987.
Their pieces were sold in 30 countries worlwide, featured in Vogue, and boasted celebrity fans including the now late Princess Diana and Michael Jackson.
The brand – Monty Don Jewellery – was stocked in Harrods and Harvey Nichols, and the couple went on to open their own store in London’s exclusive Knightsbridge.
Monty previously told the Independent that Sarah was “75 per cent of the designing brains” while he was the salesman.
Sadly, the couple’s business went under in 1987 following the Wall Street Crash and they faced bankruptcy.
However, since then, Sarah has switched her attention to writing and is an author.
Monty, meanwhile, has forged his own successful career as a horticultural expert, writer and TV presenter.
He was set to appear at talks in Exeter, Truro, Bath, and Nottingham before his heath took a sudden turn.
The TV personality explained: “I was rushed to A&E. I was kept in at the hospital over Saturday, Sunday, and Monday and had to have drips and all the rest of it.
“I came home last night, and I’m feeling much better. I’m going to spend the next few days quietly recuperating here at home and hopefully by the weekend I’ll be back to full fitness.”

Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy pays tribute to late 1D star as she shares unseen pics of him in new video
THE girlfriend of the late One Direction singer Liam Payne, has paid tribute to the star with an emotional video capturing their time together.
American Model and influencer Kate Cassidy, 25, shared a montage of precious moments from their two- year relationship on Sunday, in the now deleted footage on social media site, TikTok.
The model shared an emotional tribute video to Liam[/caption] The video captured footage of them together at various locations[/caption]The pop star died aged 31, after falling from a third floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on 16th October.
Now, nearly three weeks since the singer’s funeral, where he was laid to rest, close to his hometown in Amersham, Kate, 25 posted the compilation video.
In the caption she wrote, “I love you,” against the backdrop of the song, Fade Into You, by Mazzy Star.
Previously Kate had told how Liam was the ‘love of her life’ and how the pair had planned to marry the following year.
In the minute and a half video, the pair are seen being affectionate in various locations around the world, including Disneyland and also in the home they shared in Miami.
One image showed Liam sweeping her off her feet, as she squeals in delight and in another they’re enjoying a cosy cabin getaway.
She also shared fun photos of them bowling and larking about on a skiing holiday.
The couple first got together in October 2022 and appeared together on the red carpet at the fashion awards later that year.
Just before his untimely death, they had travelled to Argentina to watch Liam’s former bandmate Niall Horan in concert there.
Kate had returned home early after feeling homesick, a few days before he plunged to his death in Buenos Aires.
The late singer’s grieving girlfriend later attended his funeral, alongside his former bandmates, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson.
Payne’s ex Cheryl Cole, the mother of their seven-year-old son, Bear, was also in attendance, as well as music mogul, Simon Cowell, whose show the X Factor launched Liam into the stratosphere.
Last month Argentine prosecutors charged three suspects with the crimes of ‘abandonment of a person followed by death and ‘supplying and facilitating the use of narcotics.”
The autopsy found that he’d died from external bleeding and multiple injuries following his fall from the third floor balcony of the CasaSur hotel in the smart neighbourhood of Palermo.
The toxicological exams revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine and prescribed antidepressant’ in his body at the time of death.

Children under 5 at risk of ‘Disease X’ warn WHO after 406 fall ill with mysterious flu & major airport ups screenings
CHILDREN under five are most at risk of a mysterious illness dubbed ‘Disease X’ emerging in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The flu-like illness has infected 406 people in recent weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today, as an airport race to contain the spread.
Hong Kong International Airport has ramped up checks to curb spread of the disease unknown disease[/caption] Passengers flying in from Johannesburg and Addis Ababa to Hong Kong will be screened[/caption]The unknown pathogen is spreading in Panzi, a remote region, and is believed to have killed at least 31 people since October.
The number of deaths reported by the WHO differs from previous estimates. Initial reports listed anywhere from 71 to 143 deaths.
Late Thursday, Hong Kong announced tighter airport screenings for passengers flying in from Johannesburg and Addis Ababa.
Over in Japan, officials are urging citizens to skip unnecessary trips to the affected region.
Specialists have ruled out coronavirus, but have concluded that the disease affects the respiratory system.
WHO said pathogens such as influenza are being investigated as a possible cause, of malaria, measles and others.
The symptoms of the disease, the cause of which has not been established, are fever, headache, cough, runny nose and body aches.
The UN health agency revealed that all severe cases involved individuals suffering from extreme malnutrition, with most of them being children under five.
Over 64 per cent of all cases have been reported in people under the age of 14.
And approximately 53 per cent of all cases have occurred in children under five years of age.
Most deaths also have occurred in children; half of all deaths have occurred in children under the age of five
“The area is rural and remote, and the ongoing rainy season has made access even harder,” they noted.
They added that limited diagnostic resources in the region have slowed efforts to pinpoint the root cause.
‘High fevers, vomiting…and then death’
The Africa’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appeared to label the virus ‘Disease X‘ during an online press briefing on Thursday and on its X account.
The name is used by the WHO and given to a hypothetical pathogen that has pandemic potential.
It is feared to be airborne – passed via small droplets when breathing or talking – said Dieudonne Mwamba, director general of the National Public Health Institute.
He added: “We don’t know if we are dealing with a viral disease or a bacterial disease.”
A Panzi resident, Claude Niongo, said his wife and seven-year-old daughter died from the disease.
“We do not know the cause but I only noticed high fevers, vomiting…and then death,” Niongo told The Associated Press.
Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, said: “Our priority is to provide effective support to the affected families and communities.
“All efforts are underway to identify the cause of the illness, understand its modes of transmission and ensure appropriate response as swiftly as possible.”
Access to the region is difficult by road and health infrastructure is lacking.
Residents also face a shortage of drinking water and medicine.
Just over 60 per cent of people in the region suffer from malnutrition, especially children, making it one of the highest rates in the country, Congo’s health minister Roger Kamba, said.
He said that the region had already suffered a serious typhoid fever epidemic two years ago.
The DRC is also currently battling an epidemic of a dangerous new strain of mpox, known as clade 1b.
Since the beginning of the year, the virus has killed more than 650 people and infected 20,000.
Should we be worried?
Prof Paul Hunter, Professor in Medicine, University of East Anglia, said “We still know very little about this, however given the difficulties in identifying mild infections in Central Africa, the infection likely has a much lower mortality rate than these figures would suggest.
Symptoms of the mystery 'flu-like' bug
A mysterious disease with flu-like symptoms has killed dozens of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo
So far, we know some of the symptoms include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Cough
- Anaemia
- Difficulty breathing
“The illness appears to be predominantly a respiratory infection with symptoms including fever, headache, nasal congestion, cough, difficulty breathing, and anaemia.
“The big question is what is likely to be causing this and that I don’t know for certain.
“The mention of anaemia makes me think of mycoplasma pneumonia but it is too early to make a definite diagnosis until further analyses are reported.”
Last winter, Northern China saw a huge surge in cases of the disease – also known as ‘white lung syndrome’ – among children.
The infections lead to the return of masks and social distancing in a chilling echo of lockdown measures enforced during the pandemic.
A surge in cases of pneumonia has also been recorded in the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Singapore.
Dr Jake Dunning, senior research fellow and consultant in infectious diseases at the University of Oxford’s Pandemic Sciences Institute, said: “I’d say there are multiple, potential infectious causes for this unidentified illness cluster, based on the symptoms described and descriptions of who is being affected the most, and there are some possible non-infectious causes too.
“Speculating about causes for unidentified illness events – which happen periodically, especially in African countries – is not helpful and can sometimes be harmful.”
He said a mystery bug causing sickness is “always of concern and worthy of investigation”.
Dr Dunning also cautioned against dubbing the mysterious illness as ‘Disease X’.
The name comes from WHO scientists and represents a hypothetical pathogen that could emerge in future and cause a serious international epidemic or pandemic.
It was added to the WHO’s list of nine priority diseases in 2018. “Calling this incident a ‘Disease X’ outbreak; at this point is simply wrong and counterproductive,” said Dr Dunning.
Dr Michael Head, senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, added: “At time of writing, there is a huge amount of uncertainty about this outbreak.
“Outbreaks like this will happen many times around the world.
“Typically, they are brought under control without spreading too widely, and we may or may not ever find out the exact bug that caused the infections.
“This rural area in the DRC also means the public health response is more complicated.
“However, the country has had mpox and Ebola outbreaks in recent, so they are experienced at addressing infectious disease epidemics.”
Was the pigeon attack sequence in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York real?
IT JUST wouldn’t be Christmas without settling in front of the TV to watch a Home Alone movie marathon.
The second FILM sees young Kevin McCallister lost in New York where he meets the Pigeon Lady, who helps him fight of two robbers with a little help from her bird friends.

After Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) loses track of his father at the airport, he mistakenly gets on a plane headed for New York City, while the rest of the his family fly to Florida.
Now alone in the Big Apple, Kevin manages to book himself a room at the Plaza Hotel and begins his usual antics.
But when he discovers that the his arch nemesis’ the Sticky Bandits (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) are on the loose, he tries to stop them from robbing a toy store just before Christmas.
Famous pigeon attack scene
Whilst alone in New York, Kevin meets the Pigeon Lady AKA Annie, who initially he is scared of, but they soon become friends.
She helps him out when he is captured by the Sticky Bandits in Central Park.
Seeing her friend in distress, Annie throws all of her bird feed over the two robbers.
Her pigeons immediately swooped on the two bandits, as they are covered in the feed.
The birds used to film this scene were all real and were trained pigeons.
Representatives of American Humane were present for both training and filming with the pigeons.
Around 500 birds were booked to film scenes in the Home Alone 2, and they were swapped in and out so that they could rest.
Stunt men brought in
Two stuntmen were used as doubles for the two robbers and the filming took place on a sound stage, not in Central Park.
It has been revealed how empty cages with food were placed out of camera range behind the two stuntmen.
Pigeons were then released all at once from four locations and they flew to the cages.
The famous scene was shot over four days.

I’m A Celeb’s Coleen Rooney hints at camp feud with cryptic comment about ‘authentic’ co-stars
WAG Coleen Rooney dropped a cryptic clue in her first interview as she left the jungle on I’m A Celebrity.
Coleen, who came second on I’m A Celebrity on Sunday night, revealed that not everyone in the camp was genuine as she hinted at potential discord between the celebs.
Coleen Rooney hinted that not every camp mate was ‘genuine’ when they entered the camp[/caption] Whilst no camp mates were named as not being authentic at the start, Coleen’s comments hint at a possible feud[/caption]Speaking with hosts Ant and Dec on ITV, Coleen sat with Danny Jones as they discussed the camp dynamic.
Talking about her camp mates, Coleen dropped a cryptic clue that not everyone was ‘authentic’ at the start as she said: “I think everyone was their genuine selves, even if they come in here, not being they eventually was.
“And I think that, if you’re true to yourself people see that, and it’s easier. You’re not putting on a front and it’s genuine.
“I think there was a lot of bonds in there, and it was comforting. And at the end, it was so content in camp.”
Ant and Dec agreed as they commented that the camp appeared to gel quickly together.
Speaking in another ITV show, Coleen revealed that she was ready to leave the jungle a week before she came in second on this year’s ITV series.
She revealed on Unpacked! to host Joel Dommett: “I didn’t think I would make it that far.
“You know, I was ready to go a week ago. And you know, I have my bag packed every morning with everything in, and then I go back up and unpack, and then I come back.”
“But the feeling that people are voting to keep it in meant a lot to me.”
She added: “And you know, I’ve celebrated a lot of people in my life, so for people to celebrate me, I felt it was quite yet special.”
She also revealed that she’d learnt a lot about herself as she explained: “I’ve learned that I can be patient.
“Yeah, there’s been times in there where, you know, no one’s annoying me, but there’s been certain things who have wanted to step in and do it but I’ve let it be, so I think I’m going to be a bit more patient when I get out of here.”
Now out of the jungle, Coleen is also potentially being lined up to front daytime TV with a huge pay deal.
Before the show, insiders said if Coleen lost out on being crowned Jungle Queen, she was still on course to become one of the show’s most successful celebs.
A source said: “She is poised to sign a huge new TV deal, worth around £1million.”
On her upcoming offers, a source told The Sun: “Coleen’s return to public life following the Wagatha Christie trial was carefully orchestrated — and it has more than paid off.
“When she was in the jungle, she was being touted as ITV’s next Holly Willoughby and the offers have already started flooding in.
“But there is one deal on the table that has really piqued her team’s interest.
“Given Coleen’s love of the Loose Women show too, the team want her secured on their guest roster, with a view to finding something more permanent for her.
“It isn’t just TV deals — lifestyle and nutritional brands have all been sending lucrative contracts her way, as well as high street retailers. They all want a piece of Coleen. The sky’s the limit.”
I’m A Celebrity is available in full now on ITVX.
