Asda shoppers warned of little-known rule that could leave you out of pocket this Christmas – how to avoid it happening

ASDA customers are warning others of a rule that could leave them out of pocket this Christmas.

One disgruntled shopper took to social media to share how a little-known clause on its rewards app can result in you paying more money than you intended.

Asda
One shopper shared how a little-known clause can leave shoppers out of pocket.[/caption]

The app lets shoppers earn money by completing tasks such as spending in a certain department – which can then be converted into vouchers you can spend in-store.

Writing online, this customer explained how she had earned up to £60 in vouchers which she wanted to use for money off a shop worth £59.84.

However, she ended up paying the full price of the shop with her own money because of a rule which states that shoppers cannot use the vouchers on a shop which costs less than the voucher amount.

The shopper said: “I contacted Asda Rewards who told me that you cannot be under the Rewards amount, it must be over otherwise they will charge your card.”

She went on to say that this discovery had really thrown her off budget.

She added: “Asda won’t refund or use the Rewards when I contacted them so I’m stuck with having to work around it.”

However, the £60 voucher was still in her account and available to use.

Other shoppers were quick to chime in and share their experiences.

One wrote: “Yes the Boots points advantage card is the same, but I didn’t know the Asda app was. Thank you for sharing, sorry this has happened to you.”

Another added: “It’s the same in Sainsbury’s with using nectar points.”

An Asda spokesperson told The Sun that “vouchers can only be used where the total balance of your shop, is equal to or more than the value of the voucher to be used (not including excluding items, and after any other discounts have been applied)”.

“This is the Voucher Spend Threshold. If the transaction is lower than this, the full value of the voucher will remain on your Asda Rewards account, subject to voucher expiry.”

So for example, if you had a voucher worth £20 you would be able to use it on an item worth exactly £20 or use the voucher to get money off an item worth more than that amount.

This is not a new rule and has been in place since the Asda rewards app launched three years ago.

ASDA’S WARNING TO SHOPPERS

It comes as Asda warned that shoppers have until December 31 to convert any savings in their Christmas Saver Cashpots into vouchers.

The Christmas Cashpot feature lets shoppers stash away any savings they have built up over the year and spend them around the festive period.

Savvy savers can add to their Cashpot throughout the year by buying certain products, carrying out tasks and hitting shopping targets.

Asda said around 750,000 shoppers have already turned their Christmas Cashpots into vouchers to an average value of £20.

To create a voucher, shoppers have to go to the wallet section of the Asda Rewards app and select “Create Voucher”.

They then have to confirm the amount they’d like to spend from their Christmas Saver Cashpot.

HOW TO USE THE ASDA REWARDS APP

The scheme works by letting you earn cash rewards known as Asda Pounds when shopping in store and online.

You then have to scan the barcode on the app at the checkout.

If shopping online, just make sure you’re logged into your account, and then browse as normal.

Usually you can buy certain “star products” which are a mix of branded and Asda own-brand items.

You can see a full list in the dedicated section of the Asda Rewards app, but they’re also marked when you’re shopping online at Asda.com.

You can also earn rewards by completing “missions”, which are usually tasks like spending a certain amount to earn a voucher, or buying certain products to earn another.

There are new missions and events each week so there are plenty of ways for customers to maximise their rewards.

Just be mindful of how much you’re spending – not every deal will be worth the money you spend to get it and remember to look around other shops to see what deals they have to compare.

To take part in the loyalty scheme, you’ll need to download the Asda Rewards app which you can find on the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

You’ll need to have an account – if you don’t, it’s pretty easy to sign up.

You’ll just need to pop in your name and a couple of other quick details.

How to save on your supermarket shop

THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.

Narrowly missing out on winning I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2024, Coleen has now spoken out on national television.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Coleen revealed her alcohol withdrawal struggles when she made the candid confession to Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley.

Speaking about being in the jungle and worlds away from civilisation, Coleen admitted: “After a few days in I was thinking ‘what have I signed up for? What am I doing here?’.”

She added: “And then the headaches set in.

“Obviously withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, and alcohol.

“And then the hunger, we didn’t get stars in the first week.”

She went on to say: “Dean didn’t succeed in some of the trials so we were on limited food and the hunger was real.

“We got used to the rice and beans in the end. I will never cook rice and beans again.”

Last night during the final episode, the final three enjoyed a slap-up feast after winning all the stars required to enjoy a starter, main, dessert, and drink.

Coleen opted for a starter of bruschetta, spaghetti bolognese with flaky parmesan cheese and garlic bread for her main course.

Then, for dessert, she opted for fresh cream profiteroles with warm Nutella sauce and a glass of French pale Provence rose for her drink.

While she was mulling over what to choose, Coleen admitted that she wished she could have had vodka and Pepsi for her dessert.

Cole Palmer so good he’s forcing gaffers to break one of Dream Team’s golden rules

THE latest episode of the Cole Palmer (£6m) show was one of the best yet.

Chelsea’s talisman banked 25 points against Tottenham on Sunday to underline his Dream Team pedigree in emphatic style.

Dream Team
Who needs European fixtures when you’re this good?[/caption]

Granted, he was helped out by brainless fouls from Spurs midfielders Yves Bissouma (£2.5m) and Pape Matar Sarr (£3m) that gifted the visitors two penalties at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But Palmer’s spot-kicks, the second of which was an audacious Panenka, only told half the story of his performance.

The 22-year-old was credited with a ‘fantasy assist’ by stats providers Opta for his decisive hand in Enzo Fernandez’s (£4.3m) goal, which put the Blues into the lead in the second half.

As if three goal involvements weren’t enough, Palmer also earned five bonus points, the maximum available for a single game, via four successful dribbles, four fouls won, three accurate crosses, one interception and a pass completion rate of 79%.

When all was said and done, Palmer finished the weekend as the top performer of Gameweek 14 by a wide margin of ten points – Bryan Mbeumo (£4m) is his closest rival at this stage on 15 points.

EPA
A touch of class[/caption]

More broadly, the former Manchester City youngster now averages 11.1 points-per-game this season, the highest average among all players.

Palmer is evidently a special talent and so the question has to be asked, should Dream Team managers break one of the game’s golden rules to accommodate him?

Generally speaking, every gaffer should endeavour to target as many fixtures as possible in search of plentiful points.

This being one of Dream Team’s most prominent commandments for the simple reason that more games equals more point-scoring opportunities.

Getty
Palmer has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists this season[/caption]

If Player A averages 8.5 points-per-game and Player B averages 6.2 points-per-game then the former is probably the better option in a single game shootout.

However, if Player A is due to fulfil three fixtures across the next three Gameweeks while Player B is scheduled to play five times then the latter is likely to produce more points over the given time period.

It doesn’t always work out like this because there are other factors to consider but the logic is clear.

Prior the start of this season, it appeared as if Palmer would be an essential asset as the prospect of him supplementing his league returns with Thursday night points courtesy of Conference League mismatches was hugely appealing.

However, Enzo Maresca has opted to manage his star player’s workload.

Palmer wasn’t even included in Chelsea’s European squad for the league phase and he didn’t feature in the Carabao Cup prior the club’s exit at the hands of Newcastle.

This approach has pay dividends as the league regulars have stayed fresh while the second-string players have enjoyed themselves in the Conference League.

Nkunku has fun in the Conference League while the likes of Palmer and Nicolas Jackson rest up

While Maresca’s rotation policy has set the West Londoners on course for a successful season, Dream Team bosses have been left to fantasise about what could have been had Palmer also been strutting his stuff in the additional competitions.

He boasts the highest points-per-game average but since he’s played just 15 games, he’s currently behind Mohamed Salah (£7.6m), Erling Haaland (£8.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) in terms of overall points because those three stars have all featured in at least 20 games this campaign.

However, the fact Palmer is fourth overall despite having only been active in the league is truly remarkable.

Many of the elite Dream Team gaffers tend to ignore such players entirely because of their limited schedules but Palmer breaks the mould and this Gameweek is a perfect example.

There are seven relevant European fixtures happening in midweek but how many of the players involved will match Palmer’s score of 25 from the weekend?

Son Heung-min (£5.2m) is the closest player in which a chance but he’ll have to bank 13 points away to Rangers on Thursday night just to draw level with Palmer.

Gaffers should continue to target the additional competitions but if there was ever a player to break a golden rule for it’s Chelsea’s main man.

And it goes without saying that Palmer will be a must-have asset from Gameweek 16 when the focus will be purely on the Premier League over Christmas and New Year.

Caribbean’s largest island set to get new UK flights – just months after plans were scrapped

THE largest island in the Caribbean could soon get brand-new flights from the UK just months after initial plans were scrapped.

London Gatwick Airport might benefit from a new flight to Cuba next year.

London Gatwick Airport might benefit from a new flight to Cuba next year[/caption]

Earlier this year, start-up company Iron Travel hoped to launch flights between Manchester Airport to Holguin in Cuba, and London Gatwick Airport to Cayo Coco in Cuba.

While these routes were slated to operate from May, they never took to the skies because of operational reasons.

The service between London Gatwick to Holguin is back on the cards, with flights set to run from April, 2025.

According to Travel Gossip, London Gatwick Airport has no takeoff and landing slots for flights to Cuba at this present time.

However, the boss of Iron Travel, Ernesto Placer, said these slots would be granted in mid January.

He told Travel Gossip: “We’ve been informed that the slots have to be sorted out three months prior to the flights as these are charter flights. The slots in Havana and Holguin are processing.”

The service is slated to be operated by Latin American Airways, using an aircraft leased by Legend Airlines

Flights will start at £275 for a one-way economy fare, which will rise to £999 for business class seats.

When the route was scrapped earlier this year, Iron Travel Commercial Manager William Ruano said: “We agreed to push back the operation as it was too soon and we have decided to change the routes too.

“Now we are going for the historical one: London LGW to Holguin HOG – Havana HAV twice a week. All of this changing [will be] subject to confirmation this week.”

The news comes after tour operator TUI scrapped its direct service from Manchester to Cuba in April 2024.

As it stands, holidaymakers from the UK have no direct service to Cuba.

Brits will instead have to connect onto another flight in mainland Europe or Canada.

If the new route between London Gatwick and Holguin does go ahead, Brits will be landing on the southeast side of the island.

Officially known as San Isidro de Holguin, the city is packed with squares, museums and colonial buildings.

Other attractions include Bahia de Naranjo Nature Park where tourists can swim with dolphins.

Havana, the capital of Cuba, is another one of the country’s must-visit destinations thanks to its diverse architecture and classic cars.

Top attractions in Havana include the Malecón, the city’s seafront promenade, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, which houses the largest art collection in Cuba.

Brit holidaymakers travelling from the UK must have at least six months left on their passport to enter Cuba.

Tourists will also need to obtain a tourist card before travelling, and must show proof of onward travel.

Holidaymakers are also not allowed to travel directly from the USA to Cuba for tourism under US law.

Palmer, 22, broke the Premier League record for consecutive penalties scored with 12.

The former Manchester City prospect put in an impressive performance outside of his goals.

He has now managed 11 goals and six assists in his 15 Premier League appearances this season.

He was hailed by Jamie Carragher after the win against Spurs, as the former Liverpool defender claimed Palmer was becoming “world-class”.

Chelsea fans could not be more delighted with his efforts, which led the club to second place in the league table.

As a result, they have flocked to Palmer’s girlfriend, Connie Grace‘s Instagram account.

In a picture of the 22-year-old wearing a bold outfit, supporters have flooded the comments to talk about the Chelsea ace.

One posted: “Give my boy enough chippy chips.”

She also lives a glamorous lifestyle which is well-documented on her social media accounts.

Chelsea ratings vs Tottenham

CHELSEA came from two goals behind to beat Spurs 4-3 in a chaotic game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium,

Here’s how the Blues players rated…

Robert Sanchez – 4
The home fans were on to him for the entirety of the first half after he lumped the ball out of play early on.

Not an awful lot he could’ve done about the goals, and he did recover well in the second half.

Moises Caicedo – 6
Chelsea’s best defender on the day, he put in some strong challenges inverting into midfield and put in a solid performance once again.

Fortunate to escape a card for a late challenge on Pape Matar Sarr, before a brilliant second half.

Benoit Badiashile – 4
Looked uncomfortable playing as a left-footed centre-back on the right-hand side.

Often didn’t help Robert Sanchez by playing him into trouble, and looked awkward when trying to progress from the back.

Levi Colwill – 6
Allowed Solanke to get in front of him and finish brilliantly at the near post for the opening goal.

Didn’t have an awful lot to do in the second half, which was perhaps a good sign, as the whole defence was improved.

Marc Cucurella – 4
Slipped at the vital moment to practically set Spurs through and open the scoring within five minutes, before slipping AGAIN which saw Kulusevski double the lead.

Recovered really well after swapping his ice skates for football boots, nabbing the assist for Sancho’s goal and giving a solid showing for the whole second half.

That said, he has to be marked down for the two goals.

Romeo Lavia – 8
Energetic, strong and smooth on the turn in midfield, with some brilliant line-breaking passes too.

Much the same as Caicedo, he is becoming a dependable, impressive body in the Chelsea midfield.

Came off at half-time for Malo Gusto, which must have been a tactical switch.

Enzo Fernandez (c) – 9
Didn’t misplace a single one of his 28 passes in the first half, the same as Lavia – before adding a stunning, game-winning, left-footed volley to his myriad of impressive actions.

His best game in a Chelsea shirt came in one of their biggest matches of the season, as he continues his remarkable run of goal contributions.

Pedro Neto – 7
A threat on the right wing in the first half for Chelsea, he pressed well and came close to scoring Palmer’s deflected effort.

A constant danger, he was creative but slightly lacked in end product if you’re being critical.

Cole Palmer – 9
Mis-kicked a chance in the first twenty minutes you would usually bet your house on him scoring, before coming close again with a shot from range moments later.

Calmly dispatched his equalising penalty into the bottom corner, before setting up Enzo Fernandez to put his side in the lead.

Added the cherry on the Chelsea cake with an ice-cold panenka from the penalty spot.

Jadon Sancho – 8
Excellent finish to pull one back for the Blues and spark hope among supporters.

Generally sharp in build-up, and tricky feet as always, with a great slide-rule pass to see Caicedo win the penalty for Chelsea’s equaliser.

Nicolas Jackson – 6
Looked a threat going forward for Chelsea in spells, but failed to get himself on the scoresheet on this occasion.

Seemed troubled as he departed the pitch for the oncoming Christopher Nkunku.

SUBS

Malo Gusto (Romeo Lavia, HT) – 5
Was more direct and definitely an improvement on Malacia, albeit on the opposite flank.

However, still wasn’t able to be the difference which Ruben Amorim would’ve been looking for in this one.

Christopher Nkunku (Nicolas Jackson, 76)
Got in some good positions and pressed well, remaining an outlet for the Chelsea attack when they countered.

Ultimately not enough time to have the impact he would’ve liked.

Noni Madueke (Pedro Neto, 86)
Not enough time to impact the game in any way.

Renato Veiga (Marc Cucurella, 90)
Not enough time to give a solid review, hardly touched the ball.

Joao Felix (Cole Palmer, 90)
Came on with seven minutes to go, in which Chelsea were defending for the most part.

Former Labour candidate who bet on himself to LOSE cleared of breaking election rules

A FORMER Labour candidate who bet against himself becoming an MP at this year’s general election has been cleared by the Gambling Commission.

Kevin Craig, Labour’s candidate for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, admitted to placing a bet on himself to lose the vote in his constituency.

He told GB News that he had gambled £800 for a potential £400 payout that he would lose, which he ultimately did to Tory candidate Patrick Spencer.

Mr Craig was suspended by the Labour Party in June while the Gambling Commission launched an investigation into his actions.

He has now been exonerated and reinstated by the party with his lawyer saying that he had “acted lawfully” and the commission were taking no further action.

In a statement, Mr Craig’s lawyer said the commission’s decision was a “complete and total exoneration”.

“Mr Craig had no inside information and had no way of knowing who would win the election,” he said.

“It is widely recognised that some people place bets against the result they wish to happen, for example, betting against their football team. Such behaviour helps cushion the disappointment of a loss.”

Mr Craig is now campaigning for other politicians to be banned from doing the same after writing to Sir Keir Starmer with a proposed draft law to ban candidates from betting on politics.

He said: “I don’t want any candidate, whether they are Labour, Reform, Tory, SNP, Lib Dem ever to have their campaign killed off by a letter of accusation from the Gambling Commission that is subsequently proven to have no grounds.”
