Since moving abroad I’m shocked at how unhealthy the UK lifestyle is compared to EU countries

IN the New Year, many of us will start switching to healthier habits and the best place to look is our European neighbours, where many people live longer than in the UK.

When I moved to Portugal in the summer of 2020, I soon noticed that there were small, accessible things that locals did which probably accounted for their better life expectancy.

Since moving to Portugal in 2020, Brit Lauren Clark witnessed the savvy health habits of the locals[/caption]

In 2024, while the average Brit made it to 81.92 years, the Portuguese on average reaches 82.80 years.

This is why, after four years of seeing firsthand how those on the continent live differently to those back home, I think it is…

Sunshine

This is probably the key difference when it comes to lifestyle, with many places in southern Europe enjoying over 300 sunny days per year.

It means a natural boost in vitamin D for inhabitants, which is beneficial for everything from mood to bone density.

The good weather also means that physical activity naturally increases, with more temptation to get outside to move your body – which has also been linked to longevity.

However, the locals aren’t sunning themselves too much – they’ll limit sunbathing and slather on the sun cream to ensure they don’t risk skin cancer.

Food

From paella in Spain to the cheese in France and the pastel de nata in Portugal, it is possible to eat unhealthily in Europe for sure.

However, the locals tend to consume such delicacies in moderation – and often from scratch.

There will be an emphasis on eating whatever they want, as long as it’s homemade from fresh or good-quality ingredients, which make a dish naturally healthier.

What’s more, while convenience food does exist, it’s not as prevalent – and it’s normal to sit down to dine rather than grab something on the go, which is better for the digestion.

Movement

I’ve generally found that Europeans are far less sedentary than us Brits – and it’s not that they’re spending hours at the gym.

They’ll simply incorporate more small bursts of physical activity into their day, something helped by the good weather.

Just like there’s less convenience food, it’s also less convenient to shop – with online shopping rather nightmarish compared to the UK.

This means that many Portuguese locals, at least, will have to get out and about to run their errands in person.

Socialising

Research has shown that spending more time around others can aid life expectancy.

I’ve found that human interaction is very easy to come by in southern Europe, where ‘café culture‘ reigns supreme – something helped, once more, by the weather.

What’s more, in Lisbon where I live, you will often see older people leaning out of their windows for some fresh air or playing cards in the park – because socialising here isn’t all about drinking alcohol.

There is also more spontaneity when it comes to socialising, as well as a calendar of religious events and local festivals that bring people together in a more relaxed way.

Work

By which I mean, better work-life balance, which I’ve seen to be far better in Portugal than back in the UK, and certainly contributes to wellbeing.

Indeed, the national stereotype of the locals is that they work to live rather than live to work.

The Portuguese treat the OOO as sacred[/caption]

They will carefully plan their annual leave and look forward to it all year, with many amenities closed for the entirety of August.

Additionally, there is a habit of clocking off on time, with Portugal the first country in Europe where it is illegal for bosses to contact their employees outside of work hours.

Halifax makes big change to mortgage rules TODAY that will affect how much millions can borrow

HALIFAX is making a big change to mortgage rules from today affecting how much millions can borrow.

One of the UK’s biggest lenders will start using properties’ Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings when deciding how big a home loan to offer borrowers.

Halifax is making a major change to lending rules from today[/caption]

An EPC is a document that ranks how energy-efficient your home is, with A the most efficient and G the least.

Properties with EPC ratings of A and B will be able to get bigger home loans from Halifax.

Meanwhile, homes with the lower F and G ratings will see a reduction in the maximum loan amount offered.

Properties with EPC’s of C, D or E will not be included in the change coming into effect from today.

The new rule will apply to all buying, remortgage or further advance mortgages where a full affordability assessment has been carried out.

This is where a number of factors are evaluated before you are offered a mortgage, including your income, credit history and any existing debt you may be in.

Following today’s changes, Halifax said someone looking for a mortgage on a property valued at £215,000 could borrow £194,000 if the property had an EPC of A or B compared to £191,000 if the EPC was C-E or £190,000 if it was F or G.

Amanda Bryden, head of Halifax Intermediaries and Scottish Widows Bank, said: “We know that typically, more energy efficient homes are cheaper to run.

“Using EPC data and energy bill analysis, we’re able to reflect that in mortgage affordability.”

Is it good or bad news for the market?

Halifax is believed to be the first lender to factor in EPC ratings when calculating mortgage affordability for borrowers.

How to get the best deal on your mortgage

IF you're looking for a traditional type of mortgage, getting the best rates depends entirely on what's available at any given time.

There are several ways to land the best deal.

Usually the larger the deposit you have the lower the rate you can get.

If you’re remortgaging and your loan-to-value ratio (LTV) has changed, you’ll get access to better rates than before.

Your LTV will go down if your outstanding mortgage is lower and/or your home’s value is higher.

A change to your credit score or a better salary could also help you access better rates.

And if you’re nearing the end of a fixed deal soon it’s worth looking for new deals now.

You can lock in current deals sometimes up to six months before your current deal ends.

Leaving a fixed deal early will usually come with an early exit fee, so you want to avoid this extra cost.

But depending on the cost and how much you could save by switching versus sticking, it could be worth paying to leave the deal – but compare the costs first.

To find the best deal use a mortgage comparison tool to see what’s available.

You can also go to a mortgage broker who can compare a much larger range of deals for you.

Some will charge an extra fee but there are plenty who give advice for free and get paid only on commission from the lender.

You’ll also need to factor in fees for the mortgage, though some have no fees at all.

You can add the fee – sometimes more than £1,000 – to the cost of the mortgage, but be aware that means you’ll pay interest on it and so will cost more in the long term.

You can use a mortgage calculator to see how much you could borrow.

Remember you’ll have to pass the lender’s strict eligibility criteria too, which will include affordability checks and looking at your credit file.

You may also need to provide documents such as utility bills, proof of benefits, your last three month’s payslips, passports and bank statements.

Nick Mendes, mortgage technical manager at broker John Charcol, said the change was a “positive shift in the market”.

He explained: “It makes a lot of sense, given how energy efficiency directly impacts household energy bills and, in turn, a borrower’s disposable income and ability to meet mortgage repayments.

“By rewarding borrowers for purchasing sustainable homes, Halifax is creating a system where financial incentives and environmental benefits go hand in hand.

“Borrowers are empowered to make greener choices, knowing it could boost their borrowing capacity and reduce their ongoing costs.”

Nick said the change was also good news for homeowners living in properties with high EPC ratings and looking to sell.

“Homes with an A-C EPC rating typically achieve higher sale prices, so improving a property’s energy efficiency becomes a dual benefit: it’s environmentally conscious and financially savvy.

“This policy gives homeowners even more reason to invest in energy-saving improvements, making their properties not only more appealing to buyers but also more sellable in a market increasingly focused on sustainability.”

However, David Hollingworth, from L&C Mortgages, warned those in properties with lower EPC ratings, many of them older builds, may struggle to sell on.

He explained: “Looking ahead, as greater efficiency is targeted it could ultimately start to make the very lowest rated harder to sell.”

Meanwhile, Alice Haine, at Bestinvest, told Property Industry Eye: “Green upgrades can be very expensive and while incentivising homeowners to make better choices is beneficial for the overall energy efficiency of the country’s housing stock, it risks creating a two-tier market where only those with the deepest pockets or those owning the newest houses can benefit.”

If you’re with Halifax and aren’t happy with the changes it is bringing in, you could try getting a mortgage with another lender.

In other news, Barclays, NatWest and TSB cut rates this week but interest costs are creeping up.

Plus, house prices hit a record high in November as buyers rush ahead to buy ahead of major stamp duty changes.

CEO ‘assassin’ Luigi Mangione pictured eating McDonald’s hash brown before he was left ‘shaking’ when confronted by cops

THE man charged with the murder of Brian Thompson was seen eating a McDonald’s hash brown just moments before getting caught.

Luigi Mangione, 26, spent five days on the run but was eventually caught out by a rookie cop as he sat in the fast-food giant store.

Mangione was eventually caught out by a rookie cop as he sat in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania[/caption]

Mangione managed to flee 280 miles from the scene of the crime in New York to Altoona, Pennsylvania, cops believe.

He led officers from across state lines on a desperate manhunt leaving hardly any clues behind.

Cops have even admitted that Mangione was never on their list of potential suspects and he was only found thanks to a heroic McDonald’s worker.

The staff member phoned 911 after noticing a man who looked similar to the person of interest ordering breakfast.

He was sitting calmly at a table wearing a beanie with a mask and a big bag next to him.

What we know so far…

The data engineer “started to shake” when he was quizzed by cops moments before his arrest.

The suspect was asked to pull down his mask as police are said to have instantly believed they found the right man.

A junior cop said: “As soon as he pulled that down, me and my partner recognised him immediately. We knew that was our guy.”

He remained calm and continued to quiz the potential killer as he asked to see his driver’s license to identify him.

One of the customers at the McDonald’s revealed he joked to his friend that Mangione looked like the suspected shooter

He told CNN: “It started out almost like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter.

“He probably heard us. He had a mask, a hood and a backpack from what my buddy told me. My friend saw him better than I did, actually.”

Mangione slowly handed over a fake New Jersey license with the name Mark Rosario on it.

Rosario was also the name given to New York City hostel staff when the suspected killer checked in a few days before the fatal attack.

Frye continued to talk to the suspect as fellow cops searched for the name on their records.

He asked if the man had been to New York City anytime recently and at this point Frye recalls Mangione becoming “visibly nervous”.

The junior policeman also said he “started shaking”.

Shortly after, Frye told the man that the name Mark Rosario wasn’t in the US database.

They then threatened to arrest Mangione on the spot if he didn’t give up his true identity to which he admitted to being Luigi Mangione.

He reportedly told officers he “clearly shouldn’t have” used a pretend name and fake ID.

His belongings were then thoroughly checked with cops discovering a number of incriminating items inside his bag.

The wealthy college graduate from Maryland had a ghost gun similar to the murder weapon and documents that appeared to be linked to the killing, cops say.

One handwritten document is said to have indicated “motivation and mindset”, according to police.

The manifesto reportedly said: “These parasites had it coming.

“I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.”

A note also saw him reportedly admit that he acted alone and was self-funded, cops who saw the document told CNN.

He was charged with five crimes including forgery, carrying a gun without a license, false identification to law enforcement authorities, and tampering with records or identification.

He held a sombre expression as he was marched into Blair County courthouse by the Altoona Police Department for a preliminary arraignment last night.

He was later pictured inside the station wearing a dark blue long sleeve top and jeans as he had his mugshot taken.

Cops later charged him with murder.

He is yet to officially answer to the charges or enter a plea after being denied bail but was seen in court in handcuffs.

It comes as cops are continuing to look into a number of leads following Mangione’s capture.

One of the latest theories involves his pals claiming he turned “absolutely crazy” after an agonising botched back surgery.

It left him distant from his family and friends with several concerned messages now being unearthed.

Who is Luigi Mangione?

MANGIONE, 26, was regarded as a beloved, clever and wealthy man by his family, friends and all who knew him.

He was born and raised in Maryland where he was valedictorian of his high school graduating class at Gilman School in Baltimore.

He had no prior criminal history and was said to have been a model student, footballer and all-round athlete at high school.

One former student from the Gilman School told The U.S. Sun Mangione was “popular” and had a “big circle of friends.”

The former student, who asked not to be identified, said: “We went to the same school but didn’t really have the same friends. I’m really shocked by this whole thing.

“I think he played soccer, it was an all-boys school, so being a good athlete got you social currency for sure.”

After, Mangione graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Computer and Information Science, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He also got his masters from the Ivy League school.

Mangione was reportedly a data engineer at a car company in California before moving to Hawaii.

His cousin is also Republican Maryland House of Delegates member Nino Mangione.

How Jay-Z’s close-knit friendship with P Diddy dragged him into sinister web of scandal as star hit by rape claims

RAISING their champagne flutes, hip-hop titans Jay-Z and P Diddy celebrated their success and wealth as they toasted to a “black billionaire lunch year”.

Now just four years later, things have drastically changed for the rap giants, who are worth $2.5billion and $400million respectively, in the wake of serious sexual allegations

The hip-hop moguls’ relationship goes back the Nineties[/caption]

Diddy, real name Sean Combs, is currently being held in jail and faces dozens of charges including drugging, rape, assault and sex trafficking, which could see him locked away for life.

And this week, Jay-Z has been named in a lawsuit alleging he and Diddy spiked a 13-year-old girl’s drink before taking turns raping her at a house party following the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in 2000.

Jay-Z has emphatically denied the claims, slamming it as a “blackmail attempt” by the unnamed woman and her lawyer in the belief that “the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle”.

In a statement, he continued: “No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!”

The rapper, real name Shawn Carter, added that the allegations were “so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!” and said anyone guilty of such crimes “should be locked away”.

Jay-Z is the first major celebrity to become entangled in the shadowy spider’s web related to P Diddy, whose allegations mostly relate to so-called ‘White Parties’ that spanned 1998 until 2009.

The celebrations were attended by scores of A-listers, including Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and Leonardo DiCaprio, at his East Hamptons mansion, in New York

Combs’s former publicist Rob Shuter previously said: “When Diddy winked at you and said come into the VIP section [at the parties], you knew you were going to have a really good night.”

Diddy has denied the allegations against him and there is no suggestion celebrities knew of any suspected wrongdoing – including claims participants had sex with minors – but many have become implicated because of their attendance.

Now Jay-Z is the latest to fall into the pit that’s enveloped Diddy – and it’s not the first time the two hip hop stars have weathered scandal together.

Risky business

The music moguls fell into each other’s orbit in the Nineties as rising stars in the hip-hop scene – and became especially close after Jay-Z collaborated with one of Diddy’s biggest signings for Bad Boy Records.

On the track Brooklyn’s Finest, the rapper and Notorious B.I.G. – real name Christopher Wallace – playfully sparred with each other and helped to boost each other’s career, as well as Diddy’s earnings.

When Wallace was gunned down in 1997, Jay-Z featured on the track Young G’s to honour Biggie, which featured a posthumous appearance from him.

And later that year Diddy would return the favour by appearing on Jay-Z’s second album In My Lifetime, Vol 1 and co-wrote the track I Know What Girls Like.

But after a series of leg-ups from each other, their blossoming financial empires nearly fell apart after both of the New York-born performers got in trouble with the law in 1999.

In December that year, Diddy, his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, bodyguard Anthony ‘Wolf’ Jones and rap protege Jamal ‘Shyne’ Barrow attended a nightclub and after a dispute gunshots were fired, leaving three people injured.

People see us as competitors and different icons in the hip hop game but that was just a moment of two Black brothers telling each other how much they appreciate each other

Diddy

One of the victims claimed Diddy was responsible and a taxi driver alleged he had been offered a $50,000 bribe by the rapper to tell police the stolen gun was his.

After a trial, Diddy and Jones were acquitted but Barrow was found guilty of five charges including first-degree assault and served nine years’ imprisonment.

Meanwhile that same year Jay-Z nearly lost everything too after stabbing Lance ‘Un’ Rivera, a producer who had allegedly distributed bootleg copies of the musician’s unreleased album Vol 3… Life and times of S. Carter.

“Lance, you broke my heart,” the rapper reportedly said before attacking him with an eight-inch knife at the Kit Kat Club. Moments later Jay-Z’s crew stomped on him and beat him with glass bottles.

Jay-Z pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour assault charge in 2001, receiving three years’ probation, and later revealed he did so fearing prosecutors would hit him harder because Diddy got off.

‘War on rap’

At the time, there was a war on rap and hip-hop by the police, who feared the music genres were spurring on violence. As two of its biggest stars, the rappers were under threat.

“For Jay and Puff, [the arrests led to] the decision of, ‘Am I going to shed the pretenses of the streets?’” Dan Charnas, author of The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, told the New York Post.

He explained some of the issues were due to there being “more money in hip-hop” and “things started to change” as some rappers felt they had to live up to the ‘hood’ lifestyles they spoke about in songs.

Diddy had a middle-class upbringing and “took on the pretenses of that life”, according to Dan.

Whereas Jay-Z grew up in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects, the equivalent of a UK council estate, in Bedstuy, an area known as ‘do or die’ in reference to the area being so hard hit by crime, drugs and violence.

Dan added: “For Jay, it was more of a reflex that he needed to reckon with because he literally came from that lifestyle.”

Both would distance themselves from the more troublesome members of their crews in a bid to earn massive fortunes – and kept their noses relatively clean after the court cases.

Diddy and Jay-Z would continue to rise in popularity, raking in millions, simultaneously and regularly partying together including at the now infamous ‘White Parties’

Whenever I get in trouble, this is the one I call. This is my strategist right here. This is my brother!

Diddy

They joined forces to donate $1million to help families affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and described each other as ‘brothers’ in interviews.

“People see us as competitors and different icons in the hip hop game but that was just a moment of two Black brothers telling each other how much they appreciate each other,” Diddy said in 2009.

‘Strategists & brothers’

The rappers have had each other’s backs during small altercations and feuds that have unfolded over the years too.

In 2013, Diddy got into a row with the musician J Cole after he allegedly “said inappropriate things” about his girlfriend and a fight broke out.

“It was mayhem. Beyoncé was yelling to stop and Jay-Z was separating people and getting people away from Bey,” an onlooker told New York Daily News.

“We were all dancing and the fight breaks out, and it happened so quickly and bottles were crashing everywhere, and everyone was screaming. People got pushed into bottles,” said another.

Then in 2019, at Diddy’s 50th birthday party, Combs was in Jay-Z’s corner after he snatched a phone from someone filming Beyoncé dancing. Both were seen having stern words with the unnamed individual.

It was also Combs who helped to bring an end to Jay-Z’s three-year feud with Kanye West, now known as Ye, and saved him millions of dollars in the process in a legal dispute.

The feuding stars were both invited to Combs’s 50th birthday party, where they made amends and were said to be “moving forward” after hashing out an agreement over how much Ye should be paid for his involvement with the streaming service Tidal.

He was said to have been happy with the undisclosed settlement and the moment drew a line under issues between him and Jay-Z, which dated back to the 2009 VMAs.

The trust between Diddy and Jay-Z was highlighted at the 20th anniversary of Bad Boy Records in 2016, when the former gushed about his pal: “Whenever I get in trouble, this is the one I call. This is my strategist right here. This is my brother!”

‘Billionaire’ success

The duo’s ascension to the upper echelons of the music industry was celebrated at the Black Billionaire brunch in 2020, hosted by Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation.

Alongside music, both have topped up their fortunes by branching out with other businesses – including lucrative alcohol and clothing companies.

These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!

Jay-Z

Diddy spoke at the event saying it was “different” to their 2016 meet-up because “the game has been elevated” and “no expense has been spared”.

Boasting of their success, he added: “We had a Black billionaire lunch year, understand, right? And, we’re here together in keeping staying together. We’re getting tighter, and united we stand.”

Jay-Z’s silence

It’s words like these that has made some question what has been really going on behind the scenes around the time federal agents raided Diddy’s property in March this year, before arresting him in September.

Since this time, Jay-Z has remained silent – neither coming out to bat for his ‘brother’ nor speaking out against him.

Few of the rapper’s inner circle or showbiz pals have put their head above the parapet either, a point which has been picked up on by fellow hip-hop giant 50 Cent.

The Candy Shop hitmaker shared a meme showing Jay-Z on the ‘missing’ advert section of a milk carton – a practice that began in the Eighties to try to find kids who had vanished.

In reference to Jay-Z’s silence, 50 Cent captioned the post: “Anybody seen (sic) Jay LOL [three laughing emojis] puff said the [black ninja emoji] ain’t answering his phone. LOL.”

The rapper has continued to take digs for a while – leading to comments online including that Jay-Z is “in hibernation”.

Comedian Kat Williams told the Club Shay Shay podcast that “all lies would be exposed” and warned his inner circle of his belief that Diddy was “about to snitch on everybody”.

Now Jay-Z and Diddy have both been named in a civil lawsuit, which is unrelated to criminal charges against the latter. Both have refuted these new allegations and Jay-Z especially has come out fighting.

In a statement, he said: “These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!

“Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree? These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case.”

Jay-Z has cast suspicions against the complainant and also her lawyer Tony Buzbee, who responded: “I won’t allow anyone to scare my clients into silence. Sunlight is the best disinfectant and I am quite certain the sun is coming.”

Now as the hip-hop giants prepare for the legal battles of their lives, it remains to be seen if their claim of being ‘brothers’ survives such serious and complicated litigation.

Combs' downfall

By The U.S. Sun’s Senior Reporter Forrest McFarland, who has been reporting on Combs’ legal battles for years

BEFORE Sean “Diddy” Combs’ arrest, it had been highly speculated that the rap star would find himself in custody after he was repeatedly hit with disturbing accusations – and had two of his mansions raided by the feds.

His mounting legal troubles finally came to a head on September 17, when he was charged with three federal counts, including sex trafficking, for allegedly forcing victims to take part in drug-fueled sex parties he called “Freak Offs.”

Hours before his arrest, The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed the feds investigating Combs were secretly liaising with Tupac Shakur murder prosecutors on gangland activities.

The development also came after Combs was named 77 times in documents submitted by prosecutors in the Tupac murder case.

Aside from the Tupac probe, Combs was already facing a slew of lawsuits, including one he settled with his ex, Cassie Ventura, after she accused him of rape and abuse.

Disturbing hotel surveillance video from 2016 showed Combs chasing Cassie down and then punching, kicking, and beating her in a hallway.

Two months earlier, in March 2024, two of Combs’ mansions were raided by federal investigators, who seized three AR-15s, drugs, and 1,000 bottles of lube which were part of his “Freak Off” supplies.

In addition to his federal criminal charges, Combs also faces a handful of lawsuits with allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and sex trafficking dating back to the early 1990s.

Music producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones filed one suit in February 2024, claiming Combs forced him to hire sex workers and participate in sex acts while he worked on his latest album.

Combs has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the federal sex trafficking charges against him, but his battle is far from over.

He faces life in prison if he’s convicted on all counts.

The original Sol de Janeiro sets are at the higher-end of the price bracket.

Beginning at the insanely low price of £2.99, the dupe range includes sprays, bodywash and creams.

Viral brand Sol de Janeiro has seen exponential growth in the last couple of years, cementing themselves as a firm favourite among Gen-Z.

The brand is inspired by Brazilian beach culture and uses sweet and floral scents to transport you to the sunny January summers of Brazil.

Their star products are their skin-tightening Brazilian Bum Bum Cream (pronounced as ‘boom boom cream’) and their Perfume Mist.

Their signature scent is named ‘Cheirosa 62’ and has notes of salted caramel and pistachio.

The brand currently sells a ‘Bum Bum Jet Set’ kit for $32.00 USD (£25 GBP), which includes:

-Brazilian Bum Bum Cream (50ml)
-Brazilian Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel (90ml)
-Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist (30)ml

But Home Bargains has had their own crack at the iconic products, and shoppers are going wild for them.

The new Santa de Cruz range includes a dupe of the Jet Set kit – named ‘Santa de Cruz Travel Gift Set’, which includes:

-Smoothing Body Cream (50ml)
-Fragranced Body Wash (90ml)
-Fragranced Body Spray (40ml)

The scents available are Pink Lychee and Dragonfruit, Cherry Blossom and Sweet Plum, Vanilla Almond and Salted Caramel.

However, this set comes in at the much lower price of just £3.99

A whopping price difference of £21

The dupe set also includes a mini-loofah – which the Sol de Janeiro Jet Set kit does not.

Other gift sets in the Santa de Cruz range include a bundle of three body creams for just £5.99

And a three pack of fragrances for just £2.99

Commenting on a post on a Facebook bargain hunting page, one user commented: “Omg!! How cute”

Another tagged a friend, saying: “Omg, we need to go to Home Bargains today”

And one keen-nosed shopper commented: “They smell like-for-like too. They are amazing.”

The dupe sets appear to be available exclusively in-store, we have reached out to Home Bargains to find out if they will be hitting the shops soon.

Evil stepdad, 38, who violently shook baby son to death & blamed it on Hobnob biscuit is found guilty of murder

AN EVIL stepfather who shook his baby son to death and then tried to cover it up with a sick lie about a Hobnob biscuit has been found guilty of murder.

Christopher Stockton claimed one-year-old Charlie Roberts had choked on an oat biscuit after brutally shaking him to death.

Stockton, 38, shook the tot with such force that his brain moved within his skull causing catastrophic damage.

A distressing five-week trial at Teesside Crown Court heard how Charlie had been subjected to months of abuse before his death from his stepfather and mother Paula Roberts.

Stockton was today found guilty of murder and child neglect.

Mum-of-five Roberts, 41, admitted a single charge of neglect midway through the case.

The pair will be sentenced in the new year.

On January 12, paramedics were called to Roberts’ home in Darlington, Co Durham, after Stockton claimed the toddler had choked on a biscuit while crawling through a play tunnel.

In the 999 call, Stockton was heard placidly telling the near-lifeless tot: “Come on, Charlie. Come on, wakey, wakey.”

The emergency call was so “incredibly calm” that a senior medic thought it was “false alarm”, jurors were told.

Medics called to the address in Frosterley Drive found nothing blocking the youngster’s airway and tests later revealed Charlie had suffered an “unsurvivable” brain injury.

Mr Lumley, prosecuting, said: “Christopher Stockton was alone in the house with Charlie.

“In a very short time – for that is all it takes to lose one’s temper – he must have assaulted Charlie by shaking or throwing him with considerable force.

“What happened to Charlie once his mother had closed the door on him was no accident.

“Much as it may have been quickly and bitterly regretted, it was no accident.”

He added: “The force to cause those devastating injuries would have caused Charlie to collapse almost immediately.

“He could not have been walking and talking afterwards for more than a few moments, if at all.”

Charlie died at Newcastle hospital on January 13 after attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Prosecutors said Charlie had been subjected to “cruel and uncaring” injuries in the seven months before his death.

Roberts, who was at an eye appointment when Charlie was allegedly fatally attacked, eventually admitted cruelly neglecting her son.

His nursery and family members reported noticing bruises in the weeks and months before his death.

Ken Greenwell, Charlie’s paternal grandad, told how the youngster appeared hungry on weekly visits to their home with “pitifully thin” arms and legs.

Jurors were also told how Roberts installed a spy camera above his cot in September last year after her relationship with Stockton “became rocky”.

She disguised the Amazon-bought indoor camera in a hanging basket after telling her brother she was “concerned” about Stockton.

Dominic Tate of CPS North East said: “Our thoughts remain with the father of Charlie Roberts, for who this must remain a particularly difficult time.

“We sincerely hope that he can take some measure of comfort from today’s conviction of Christopher Stockton over the death of his son.”

Stockton was remanded into custody to await his sentence and told he will be jailed for life.

More than 170 entries have been made for Sunday’s jumps action at Windsor – best known for its Monday evening meetings when the weather’s hot.

Top trainers including Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson and Dan Skelton are set to have a number of runners on the seven-race card.

The action gets underway with a 2m4f novices’ hurdle at 12.10pm, a couple hours after the first boat is set to depart the promenade for the track.

More than £100,000 will be on offer to those owners, trainers and jockeys taking part.

But the meeting is about so much more than that, with one of the country’s top Flat courses finally welcoming back the thrills and spills of the jumps after more than two decades.

It hasn’t come without its concerns though.

The infamous tight bend after the winning post has seen many a horse slip up.

And the National Hunt types – who generally prefer softer ground conditions – will have to navigate it safely in front of the packed grandstand.

Several jockeys voiced their opinion on how the Arena Racing Company-owned track could be improved at a recent gallops morning.

The new layout of the Windsor track has been changed to accommodate the bigger, stronger jumps horses

And clerk of the course Charlie Rees confirmed the changes had now been put in place ahead of the big day.

He said: “Following the feedback after our gallops morning in November, we have been able to make a few amendments to the lay-out of the course.

“Specifically, the top bend beyond the winning post will now be shared by both hurdlers and chasers.

“Also, the chase fences down the home straight have been moved to the far side of the track to offer horses racing on that course a more sweeping bend out of the dog-leg turn.

“These moves on the chase course have resulted in some minor distance amendments to those previously advertised, whist the hurdles course remains unaltered.”

Hopefully it all goes without a hitch.

The track, which last hosted jumps action in 1998, has lost its figure-of-eight formation in favour of a continuous left-handed design.

Its proximity to the River Thames means there is great drainage with soft ground likely to be as testing as it will get.

The meeting is the first of three jumps fixtures at Windsor this season.

Days one and three of the Berkshire Winter Million meeting on January 17 and 19 will also be there, with Ascot getting the middle slot.

Tickets for all three days cost just £40.
