Best soap affair love triangles

LOVE triangles are a fundamental part of soap-land, but which ones have become the most iconic?

EASTENDERS

Bradley/Stacey/Max: Stacey Slater began an affair with boyfriend Bradley Branning’s dad Max in 2007.

Despite their romps, Stacey still married Bradley, but their deceit came out in an iconic Christmas Day episode that year.

Grant/Sharon/Phil: Heading even further back in Walford history, EastEnders fans were gripped in the 90s as Sharon Watts had a one-night stand with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell.

Sharon confided in best friend Michelle Fowler – not realising it was caught on tape – and her husband Grant eventually found out and played it in front of everyone at the Queen Vic.

Syed/Amira/Christian: Syed Masood was engaged to Amira before realising he had feelings for another man, Christian, which he confessed to him on his wedding day.

A devout Muslim, Syed refused to admit his true sexuality and went ahead and married Amira anyway, but when they returned, the two men started an affair before being caught in the act by Amira.

CORONATION STREET

Shelley/Peter/Lucy: Peter Barlow took the concept of a love triangle and ran with it in Coronation Street – extending it to bigamy.

He was in a relationship with Shelley Unwin but started dating Lucy Richards, and quickly married her after she fell pregnant with his son, Simon.

But it didn’t stop him also marrying Shelley, but he was eventually caught when Lucy turned up in Weatherfield and the two women confronted him.

Ken/Deidre/Mike: Back in 1982, Deirdre Barlow started sleeping with her husband’s nemesis Mike Baldwin in secret, before confessing all a year later.

When Mike turned up at the marital home, Deirdre was being throttled by her husband who then kicked her out, but years later they reconciled.

Maria/Aidan/Eva: In 2017, Aidan Connor started sleeping with girlfriend Eva Price’s best friend, Maria Connor.

Eva eventually found out and she decided to take revenge by faking a pregnancy, spending his money and planned to confront him on their wedding day.

But she had a change of heart when a remorseful Aidan confessed, and decided to marry him anyway, only for Maria to arrive and expose her fake pregnancy.

EMMERDALE

Ross/Debbie/Pete: Debbie Dingle found herself torn between two brothers, Ross and Pete Barton in 2015 in Emmerdale.

She eventually decided to marry Pete but yet again, a soap wedding day was ruined when the groom learned of his bride’s betrayal via a recording played at the wedding.

Chrissie/Robert/Aaron: Robert Sugden was married to Chrissie White and all seemed well – until he began a steamy affair with Aaron Dingle.

Robert’s ex Katie Sugden almost exposed the affair – but fell to her death before she had the chance.

However, a guilty Aaron eventually cracked and told Chrissie about the affair – after which she announced it to the whole pub.

Second winter World Cup all but certain with Saudi Arabia set to be named 2034 hosts after Fifa change vote protocol

PREM chiefs are facing an uphill battle to stop a SECOND winter World Cup.

Saudi Arabia will be named the 2034 hosts at a ‘virtual’ meeting of Fifa’s 211 associations today.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino will oversee a vote that will see the 2030 and 2034 tournaments awarded as a joint package, with no possibility for associations to object to either tournament individually.

In a further sign of Infantino’s power, the FA will line up with most of the other European associations to nod through the two hosting decisions “by acclamation”.

The Norwegian FA are likely to be the lone voice speaking out after Oslo officials criticised the “flawed” process.

But the FA, keen on hosting the 2029 Women’s World Cup, is understood to be reluctant to rock the apple cart and follow suit.

The 2030 event will mainly be staged in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, although the opening three matches will be split between Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Confirmation that Saudi Arabia will host another desert event, 12 years after the first winter tournament in Qatar in 2022, will lead to a backlash from Europe’s top leagues.

Prem chief executive Richard Masters is certain to be among those fighting a winter tournament.

The Saudi tournament is likely to be played over 38 days from the start of January 2034 to avoid a clash with the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan in November and December.

Europe’s biggest leagues, fearful of SEVEN WEEKS of no club football to accommodate the event, are certain to try to block it from being played in the middle of the season.

The World Cup in 2022 was won by Argentina in Qatar after a thrilling final against France.

Lionel Messi achieved his dream of leading his country to the heralded trophy after a penalty shootout.

England reached the quarter-finals in the tournament but were knocked out by finalists France.

The Three Lions will be led by German manager Thomas Tuchel at the 2028 edition as they bid to win the trophy for the first time since 1966.

My view

NOBODY wants another winter World Cup.

But Prem chiefs are burying their heads in the desert sands to try to block Fifa from staging 2034 in Saudi Arabia during January and February.

Moving the showpiece to mid-season once again will be a huge disruption — that’s obvious.

It would mean a minimum seven weeks without top-flight action.
And will also see concertinaed domestic and European schedules in the seasons either side of the World Cup, with even less rest for already over-played stars.

Yet what is the alternative when you could fry an egg on the pavements in Riyadh, Jeddah and the still-to-be-built city of Neom in June and July

With 45C-plus temperatures, everyone just has to bite the bullet and get on with it.

The court heard yesterday how Devoy had shown signs of having suffered a medical episode during an incident days before the fatal crash on May 2 2022.

As a result, his licence was officially revoked by the DVLA but he fraudulently applied for a new one before collecting a BMW.

Later that same day he was spotted driving erratically before colliding with the rear of a Fiat Punto several times and speeding off.

Witnesses then saw Devoy approach Mr Errington’s Mercedes car, at times on the wrong side of the road, and speeding well over the limit.

He collided with the back of the vehicle while it was stationary.

Mr Errington suffered serious injuries and died in hospital 10 days later on May 12 2022.

The same officer who had applied to the DVLA to have Devoy’s licence revoked attended the scene and recognised the defendant.

Wolves make Gary O’Neil decision ahead of relegation clash after dismal run of three wins in 25 games

GARY O’NEIL has assured Wolves chiefs he can still save their season – and will remain in charge for Saturday’s crunch relegation dogfight against Ipswich Town.

Many supporters believed Monday night’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers West Ham would sound the death knell for O’Neil’s 16-month reign at Molineux.

However, Wolves‘ leadership team continue to back their beleaguered boss and do not blame him totally for their poor run of results.

Since they crashed out of the FA Cup to Coventry City in March, Wolves have been in freefall, winning just three of their last 25 games.

However, the Board accepted O’Neil has been fighting with one arm tied behind his back after they sold skipper Max Kilman and star forward Pedro Neto for £94million last summer – without providing adequate replacements.

The under-fire 41-year-old will remain in charge for Saturday’s crucial relegation dogfight at home to Ipswich Town and, barring a disaster, he will also take the team to Leicester City the following Sunday.

O’Neil believes he can give sceptical supporters an early Christmas present by taking something from both games.

Wolves want to give him every chance of succeeding and will put out all the stops to strengthen a wafer-thin squad in January.

The Wolves Board remain convinced O’Neil can ride out the current storm and are prepared to back him despite the growing unrest among the club’s support.

Three successive defeats leaves Wolves deep in trouble in the relegation zone but O’Neil believes the next two games are crucial.

“The club has been through an incredible transition since I came in,” said O’Neil after Monday’s defeat by the Hammers.

“We’ve signed some players who will be really good for this club for the future, but we have lost an awful lot.

Wolves' next five games: Ipswich (H) 3PM, Leicester (A) 2PM, Man Utd (H) 5:30PM, Tottenham (A) 3PM, N Forest (H) 8PM.

“It makes it harder.

“Since I’ve been here we have lost £200m worth of talent.

“We understand it will be tough but we will knuckle down and get going again.”

Who are these famous footballers?
