Chelsea owner Todd Boehly in talks to buy 169-year-old UK newspaper in £550m deal

TODD BOEHLY is in talks to buy The Daily Telegraph.

The Chelsea co-owner, 51, could help to fund Dovid Efune’s bid to acquire the UK Newspaper.

Dovid Efune has been trying to strike a deal to buy the UK newspaper[/caption]

Efune, 39, already owns The New York Sun and is looking to add the Telegraph to his portfolio.

He has been in exclusive talks for nearly two months to buy the newspaper, but this period of exclusivity is set to end in the coming days.

The Telegraph’s current ownership group, headed by Jeff Zucker, is said to be coveting at least £550million ($700m).

According to the Financial Times, Boehly could step in to help fund Efune’s bid.

Should Efune drop out of the running, however, it’s said that Boehly could try to buy the Telegraph outright.

The American is already a familiar name in the UK having completed a £4.25bn ($5.4bn) deal to buy Chelsea alongside Behdad Eghbali in 2022.

As of the end of 2023, the Telegraph possessed more than one million subscribers.

Zucker is chief executive of the Redbird IMI group, which took control of the Telegraph, as well as sister publication The Spectator, last December having paid off debts of its previous owners the Barclay family.

Redbird IMI were quickly then forced to take bids for both titles by the UK government, however, due to their Abu Dhabi-backing.

They have agreed a £100m ($127m) deal with British billionaire Paul Marshall to sell The Spectator.

While Efune and now Boehly are exploring a deal to acquire The Telegraph.

Boehly has several other business interests in sport aside from Chelsea.

He owns 20 per cent of MLB franchise the Los Angeles Dodgers, while he and Mark Walter acquired 27 per cent of NBA giants the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021.

The businessman also possesses a stake in the Los Angeles Sparks WNBA franchise, while in June 2023 Boehly’s BlueCo bought Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for around £65m ($83m).

In the summer it was reported that Boehly and Eghbali were at loggerheads and wanted to buy each other out at Chelsea.

But since then it has been claimed that the rift between the two has healed somewhat.

Reverse hair loss for good by introducing five ‘key role’ foods into your diet

DID you know that certain foods can play a “key role” in helping prevent hair loss?

Diet and hydration are both very important in the health, growth and the condition of our hair.

Experts suggest high protein foods like eggs will help reverse signs of hair loss[/caption]

And there are a number of simple and easy foods that can help reverse hair loss.

Eva Proudman, a trichologist at Absolute Collagen lists five foods that can help many women struggling with the issue.

She revealed that foods which are rich in protein will help provide keratin – which hair is made of.

You can make sure your diet includes lean meats, fish and beans which are all high in protein.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also great to help nourish the scalp and reduce inflammation, potentially minimising hair loss.

You can find this in fish and flaxseeds.

And to make sure you are getting enough protein and omega-3 in your diet, rather than choosing an on-the-go breakfast, take the time each morning to have a well-balanced meal.

You can add a spoonful of flaxseeds to your morning cereal or even opt for a plate of scrambled eggs.

A number of women may experience hair loss during the menopause.

Hair changes is one of the many changes women can struggle with.

It has been found that 40 per cent of women experience some sort of hair loss during menopause.

Eva added: “Many women in midlife notice a change in their hair. This is because your hormones fluctuate during menopause.

“Oestrogen and progesterone can decrease; oestrogen in particular is beneficial for the hair as it helps to keep it in the ‘growing phase’ for longer.

“The relationship with our hair can be very emotional. And the impact that hair loss can have on our mental health and wellbeing is often underestimated.

“It can affect self-confidence, feelings of femininity and a person’s ability to socialise, with many avoiding social occasions due to hair problems.

“On top of this perimenopause and menopause can heighten feelings of anxiety, and when the hair develops a problem around this time of life, it intensifies these feelings.”

We told earlier how a mum who refused to leave the house because her hair loss was so bad now has the “thick and shiny” locks from her teens again after creating a three-ingredient wonder pill.

The mum of two, from Scotland, said it was a “horrific” and emotionally challenging experience.

Everything you need to know about hair loss

Marie Nieuwoudt, a Group Education Manager at CLOUD NINE told Fabulous everything you need to know regarding hair loss.

What are the common causes of hair loss?

Marie explained: “There are so many reasons why someone may face hair loss.

“The number one reason is usually hormonal changes or underlying health conditions (like thyroid conditions), and stress of
course also plays a big part in changes to your hair health.

“But another very common day-to-day cause is excessive damage to your hair created by mistakes in your styling routines – and this a
big one to be aware of for people who are regularly applying heat to their hair!

“It’s important to know the right temperature for your hair type when using styling tools, as this is essential in reducing unintentional heat damage.

“I also see a lot of people facing hair loss resulting from hereditary conditions, which are passed down from generation to generation.”

What are the best hairstyles people should try to reduce their hair loss?

According to Marie: “Less is more when it comes to hair loss! It’s important to be gentle with your hair, so a low-maintenance style that limits pulling on your scalp will be your best option.

“Putting your hair up in a tight ponytail or adding hair clips can cause stress points at the roots.

“Instead, try leaving your hair down, or out.

“You’re not limited in your options, but it pays to be intentional with your hair styling. Using tools which limit damage to your hair is vital.

“Discussing your concerns with a hairdresser or hair loss specialist is also a great way to find styles that suit your specific needs, whilst still making sure you look and feel your best.”

How long does it take for hair loss to stop?

If you’re itching to know when your hair will grow back, Marie confirmed: “Hair loss is a personal journey – and it’s different for everyone, so it’s very difficult to put exact timings on this process.

“Every head of hair is unique, and so too is your hair loss experience.

“As always, you can speak to a professional hairdresser or trichologist about your specific concerns and hair changes, and they’ll be able to help you manage those expectations.

“I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to be kind to your hair. Most people treat their hair quite roughly, and this is something you definitely want to avoid when dealing with hair loss in particular.

“Make sure you’re choosing products and styling routines that you know are good for your hair, rather than causing additional damage.”

WILLIE MULLINS unleashed a ‘monstrous’ new talent – who was instantly made favourite for the County Hurdle on the back of his devastating debut.

Multi-millionaire owners Joe and Marie Donnelly look to have another hugely exciting prospect on their hands with Kitzbuhel.

https://twitter.com/RacingTV/status/1866496242253021453

Presumably named after the small Alpine town in Austria, Kitzbuhel was simply awesome on his first run for Mullins at Punchestown on Tuesday.

In the famed black and white silks associated with the likes of Al Boum Photo, State Man and Sir Gino, Kitzbuhel easily disposed of the 146-rated 6-4 fav Colonel Mustard off level weights.

Sent off 3-1 under Paul Townend, Kitzbuhel made all in style, kicking clear of his established rival to win the 2m½f hurdle by three-and-three-quarter lengths.

Only four, he is the latest on the long production line from France.

The country seems to have a knack for making ready-to-go hurdlers – see former Triumph winners Vauban and Majborough.

Kitzbuhel arrived at Mullins’ Closutton yard having won one of three over the Channel before being snapped up by bloodstock agent Harold Kirk.

But he looked a potential world beater on this debut – matching the hype around the Donnellys’ other new hurdling star Anzadam.

William Hill traders decided they had seen enough after Kitzbuhel’s first run for Mullins.

They instantly made him 10-1 favourite for the County Hurdle – famously won in 2022 by the now 169-rated State Man off just 141.

Funnily enough Colonel Mustard finished third in that same race.

Punters were blown away by Kitzbuhel’s professionalism.

One wrote: “That performance from Kitzbuhel is just monstrous! He is only a 4-year-old and has convincingly beat a 146-rated Colonel Mustard on debut for Willie Mullins.”

Another posted: “Stunning horse, nice performance. Will be seeing more of this one, that’s for sure!”

While jockey Townend offered a glimpse into the future when he said after the race: “He was very professional.

“I think Kitzbuhel will stay further, he surprised me the way he quickened into the straight.”

Who was Joanna Yeates from C5’s Body in the snow and how did the landscape architect die?

JOANNA Yeates was a 25-year-old who was tragically murdered in Bristol in 2010.

Her murder rocked England and became one of the most high-profile crimes of the 21st Century, something which is explored in Channel 5’s Body in the Snow.

Living in Bristol

Joanna was born on April 19, 1985, and grew up in Hampshire.

She received a postgraduate degree in landscape architecture at the University of Gloucestershire, before moving to Bristol in 2009.

Joanna moved in with a fellow architect named Greg Reardon.

On December 19, 2020, Greg returned home to find Joanna missing from their flat.

He became worried when she didn’t return his text messages and when he discovered her phone was still in the flat.

At half past midnight, he contacted the police and reported Joanna as missing.

It was revealed that Joanna had spent the evening with her colleagues at the Bristol Ram pub, before heading home at 8pm.

The search for Joanna

After she vanished, Greg set up a website with Joanna’s friends which was dedicated to finding her.

On December 23, 2010, Joanna’s family took part in a live broadcast where they spoke out about their daughter’s disappearance.

Her father said: “I think she was abducted after getting home to her flat … I have no idea of the circumstances of the abduction because of what was left behind … I feel sure she would not have gone out by herself leaving all these things behind and she was taken away somewhere”

Sadly, Joanna’s body was found on a golf course on Christmas Day 2010.

Then, the search for the architecture student’s killer began.

Crime Stoppers offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the murder, where The Sun offered an eye-watering £50,000.

Joanna’s cause of death was revealed to be strangulation.

Witnesses who lived near the 25-year-old said that they heard someone scream “help me” on the night of her death.

The wrong man

On December 30, 2020, Christopher Jefferies, Joanna’s landlord was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He was detained as a suspect for 96 hours before being released on bail.

The landlord was cleared as a suspect on March 4, 2011, and successfully sued several newspapers for publishing defamatory articles about him following his arrest.

The killer is caught

On January 20, 2011, the then-32-year-old Vincent Tabak was arrested after an anonymous tip prompted by someone who saw the BBC programme Crimewatch

Tabak moved to the UK from the Netherlands in 2007 after taking a job at an engineering consultancy firm in Bath.

He was Joanna’s neighbour and claimed that he had murdered her because she had screamed when he kissed her.

Tabak claimed that he dumped her body because he was in a “state of panic”.

He received a life sentence with a minimum term of twenty years for his crime.

On March 2, 2015, he pleaded guilty possessing more than 100 indecent images of children and received a 10 month prison sentence.

Body in the Snow

Joanna’s tragic murder and the effect that it had on the UK is examined in Channel 5’s Body in the Snow.

The programme includes testimony from key witnesses and detectives.

Body in the Snow will air on December 12, 2024, at 10p

The four high street chains closing shops before Christmas with 20 locations set to shut for good

FOUR of the UK’s most popular retailers are set to close down stores just before Christmas, in another blow to shoppers.

This year has proved to be another challenging one for many of Britain’s favourite brands.

A number of retailers have gone bust this year[/caption]

Iconic retailers such as Ted Baker were wiped off the high street due to financial challenges and weak demand from customers.

Shoppers were also forced to wave goodbye to nearly 200 Carpetright stores after the brand collapsed before being partially rescued by rival company Tavi .

And now at least 20 stores – owned by some of shoppers’ favourite brands – are set to close right before the holidays.

You can check out the full list below.

HOMEBASE

Up to 70 Homebase were saved by The Range last month after it collapsed.

But the store has confirmed that six of its sites will close before the end of the year.

These include sites in Sutton Coldfield, Bromsgrove, Cromer, Fareham, Newark and Rugby.

Three more Homebase sites in Derry, Inverurie, and Omagh are also set to close in the coming months, along with a branch in Glenrothes near Fife.

The stores are set to be converted into Sainsbury’s sites after the brand acquires them over the summer.

Around 49 Homebase stores still remain at risk of closure.

THE ORIGINAL FACTORY SHOP

The discounter is pulling the plug on its store in Haverfordwest, Wales on December 14.

Bosses at the bargain beauty to electrical store have already shut down nine of its stores in recent months.

These include:

  • Brightlingsea, Essex
  • Bodmin, Cornwall
  • Chepstow, Wales
  • Fakenham, Norfolk
  • Harwich, Essex
  • Mildenhall, Suffolk
  • Padiham, Lancashire
  • Taunton, Somerset
  • Deal, Kent

But it’s not all bad news, as it has been opening stores across the UK too, as it shakes up its presence on the high street.

The full list of stores that have opened since August 2023 includes:

  • Kirkintilloch – opened August 24
  • Stonehaven – opened August 31
  • Blandford Forum – opened August 31
  • Haddington – opened September 7
  • Wetherby – opened September 7
  • Nairn – opened September 14
  • Ashbourne – opened September 14
  • Castle Douglas – opened September 21
  • Penrith – opened September 21
  • Inverness – opened September 28
  • Attleborough – opened September 28
  • Ayr – opened October 5
  • Ringwood – opened October 5
  • Perth – opened October 12
  • Lanark – opened October 19
  • Peterhead – opened October 26

Ann Summers

The raunchy retailer confirmed it would close in location in Doncaster on Christmas Eve.

Ann Summers – famed for its lingerie and bedroom toys – is exiting the area after several decades on the Yorkshire high street.

However, the shop has promised to go out with a bang, launching a “warehouse clearance event” and a 70% off sale.

The next nearest shop is in Sheffield which is a half an hour drive away from Doncaster’s Baxter Gate store.

Ann Summers has around 80 stores across the UK and Ireland and an online shop.

You can find your nearest branch by visiting, www.annsummers.com/stores.

Dobbies

Garden retailer Dobbies will close 12 of its sites before Christmas.

It was announced back in September that it would axe a number of its locations as part of a major restructuring plan.

However, the process needed to be approved by the courts with bosses given the green light yesterday to go ahead with the closures.

A total of 10 sites will now shut, with an eleventh site in Antrim originally earmarked for closure saved.

It added that discussions with landlords over rent reductions meant that two additional garden centres in Morpeth and Stapleton would be moved to other garden centre operators.

In a statement, the firm said the move will enable Dobbies to return to “sustainable profitability and unlock access to “future investment”.

Now come December, the following locations will shut for good.

  • Altrincham – December 17
  • Gloucester – December 15
  • Gosforth – December 19
  • Harlestone Heath – December 17
  • Huntingdon TBC
  • Inverness on December 23
  • King’s Lynn – December 15
  • Pennine – December 15
  • Reading – December 23
  • Stratford-upon-Avon on – December 23

Dobbies will continue to operate around 60 stores across the UK.

TROUBLE ON THE HIGH STREET

The news comes amid a challenging time for the whole of the UK’s retail sector.

High inflation coupled with a squeeze on consumers’ finances has meant people have less money to spend in the shops.

Also, the rising popularity in online shopping has meant people are favouring digital ordering over visiting a physical store.

This ongoing trend has seen brands such as Paperchase vanish completely.

Why are retailers closing shops?

EMPTY shops have become an eyesore on many British high streets and are often symbolic of a town centre’s decline.

The Sun’s business editor Ashley Armstrong explains why so many retailers are shutting their doors.

In many cases, retailers are shutting stores because they are no longer the money-makers they once were because of the rise of online shopping.

Falling store sales and rising staff costs have made it even more expensive for shops to stay open. In some cases, retailers are shutting a store and reopening a new shop at the other end of a high street to reflect how a town has changed.

The problem is that when a big shop closes, footfall falls across the local high street, which puts more shops at risk of closing.

Retail parks are increasingly popular with shoppers, who want to be able to get easy, free parking at a time when local councils have hiked parking charges in towns.

Many retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have been shutting stores on the high street and taking bigger stores in better-performing retail parks instead.

Boss Stuart Machin recently said that when it relocated a tired store in Chesterfield to a new big store in a retail park half a mile away, its sales in the area rose by 103 per cent.

In some cases, stores have been shut when a retailer goes bust, as in the case of Wilko, Debenhams Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Paperchase to name a few.

What’s increasingly common is when a chain goes bust a rival retailer or private equity firm snaps up the intellectual property rights so they can own the brand and sell it online.

They may go on to open a handful of stores if there is customer demand, but there are rarely ever as many stores or in the same places.
