Nurse blamed aching muscles on gruelling 12-hour shifts – but it was deadly clot triggered by common drug
A NURSE claims she nearly died after mistaking aching muscles and chest pain on working gruelling 12-hour shifts.
It turned out it was the first sign of a deadly blood clot.
Chloe Mangan but her symptoms down to working long shifts[/caption] A month after first taking the pill, she began experiencing pain in her legs[/caption]Chloe Mangan, 25, began taking the combined pill in August as a way to help combat her acne.
She’d struggled with skin issues since her teenage years and hoped the medication would boost her self-confidence.
But around a month after first taking the contraception, Chloe began experiencing pain in her legs, which she put down to working 12-hour shifts as a paediatric nurse.
Soon after, during a night shift, Chloe began feeling severe pains across her chest but mistook the aches for a pulled muscle from her dance class and working such a physical job.
It was only when her colleagues encouraged Chloe to go to A&E that doctors discovered a “significant” blood clot in her left lung.
She was told the clot was caused by the combined pill – and feels lucky to be alive.
Chloe, from Dudley, West Midlands, said: “I always suffered with acne and my skin, I’d tried the pill before but it hadn’t really worked.
“My acne had really started to affect my self-confidence because I felt like there was nothing I could do to hide my biggest flaw.
“Then I went to go and see a specialist consultant in June or July and we decided to try the pill again because they believed my skin was something to do with my hormones.
“She did tell me this pill has a double risk of blood clots, but that it was still a small risk, and with every other factor in my medical history, I shouldn’t be too concerned.
“A few weeks in my skin had started clearing up and it was a really positive thing for me, so I’d forgotten the risk of blood clots.”
Chest and leg pain
But in October, just weeks after beginning her new medication, Chloe began experiencing pains in her chest and legs.
Chloe said: “While at work, I said to some of the girls that my legs hurt and my calf felt quite tight.
“Being on my feet for 12 hours, I thought it was probably related to that. I didn’t think too much of it.
“Then I was working a night shift and had been experiencing some chest pain in the lead up to my shift, which hadn’t gone away.
“While I was working I began with this severe chest pain, shortness of breath, a stabbing pain, which took me off my feet. It was very left-sided but I thought it was just muscular.
“I’m a dancer and only a few days before we’d been lifting each other up and doing quite a lot of strenuous activities on my left side and I just put it down to that.
“I just thought I had pulled something, I have quite a physical job and get a lot of aches and pains.”
‘I could have had a heart attack’
As her chest pain grew worse, Chloe was encouraged by colleagues to get checked out in A&E where tests revealed she had a pulmonary embolism.
Chloe said: “The doctor came back and said ‘your bloods indicate that you’ve got a blood clot’.
“It completely knocked me for six, it was 4am and I was on my own. I thought ‘this is quite serious and I can die from this quite easily’.
“My blood clot was something called a provoked blood clot, which means there was a cause.
“With my age and being on the pill, they knew it was most likely caused by that.”
Being young and relatively fit, Chloe said she didn’t expect this to happen to her.
She said: “They said it was a significant blood clot. I could’ve had a heart attack, the clot could’ve gone to my brain.
“I really could’ve died, it could’ve been a completely different outcome, I’m very lucky.”
Common side effects and risks of the combined pill
The combined contraceptive pill (also called the pill)is a type of hormonal contraception.
There are different versions – the everyday pill is one you take every day, with dummy pills that don’t contain any hormones in each packet.
The 21-day pill is one you take for 21 days, before having a break for seven days.
Some side effects can occur when you first start taking the pill, including bleeding between periods (known as breakthrough bleeding).
It can also cause high blood pressure in a small number of people, as well as headaches, feeling sick or dizziness, and sore breasts.
But there isn’t enough evidence to suggest this is caused by the pill.
If you still have side effects after three months and they’re a problem for you, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
They may be able to change you to a different pill.
The pill is linked to a small risk of blood clots and cancer.
The risk of getting a blood clot is very small, affecting up to one in 1,000 people.
There’s a slightly raised risk of getting breast cancer or cervical cancer, but your risk goes back to normal after you stop taking the pill.

After being discharged, Chloe was rushed back to hospital when her chest pain worsened.
Chloe said: “The pain was 10 times worse than what it first had been. Painkillers just weren’t touching it.
“I couldn’t breathe out without screaming, it was horrific. I’d never experienced pain like that in my life.”
Chloe stopped taking the contraceptive pill immediately after her hospitalisation and is now on a six-month course of blood-thinners.
After her ordeal, Chloe is now speaking out against the risks involved with the combined pill.
Chloe said: “The scary thing is that it really can happen to anybody. When the risks are talked about, I don’t think it’s stressed enough how much a blood clot can have an impact on your life.
“It has a significant impact and it’s all from a pill that most people take.”

TOWIE star Frankie Sims’ new boyfriend has been revealed as city worker Billy Jones.
The reality star, 29, has shared snaps of her mystery man on social media, but kept his face hidden with a love heart.
The couple have been together since May[/caption]Frankie, who has dated a string of TV stars and footballers, has been in a relationship with a 30-year-old finance worker since May.
A source told The Sun: “Billy has swept Frankie off her feet and they are in love with one another.
“Frankie’s been dating Billy since May, he works in finance and has won her over.
“She wanted to keep her new relationship under wraps and as private for as long as possible, until she knew he was ‘The One’.
“She met Billy through one of her friends Shaughna Phillips and sister Demi and is well known to a lot of people in Essex.
“Frankie’s close friends and family have given her their approval, including her sister Demi, who is a big fan of her new boyfriend and having her sister’s approval means a lot to her.
“They are looking forward to the future, Billy is a private guy and not often on social media.
“He’s had links to other girls in Essex, including rumours of a romance with Chloe Brockett years ago.
“Frankie’s friends have said that they haven’t seen her looking so happy in a long time, Billy is like a breath of fresh air and it’s nice to see that she’s found someone who puts effort into her.”
The Sun have reached out to Frankie’s rep for comment.
On Wednesday, Frankie shared photos of her enjoying a date night with Billy at Sheesh.
The pair were seen looking lovingly at each other and sharing a kiss on the lips.
Frankie posted a string of snaps of her blonde haired beau and wrote: “Love you so much,” and “Back to where it all began”.
Back in October, Frankie shared a photo of her cuddling up to the mystery man on a night out to see Black Coffee perform at Alexandra Palace – but she covered his face with a love heart emoji.
Frankie’s new private relationship comes after several in the spotlight.
She has previously dated Love Island‘s Jack Fincham on and off between 2019 and 2021, who is currently in a relationship with ex Towie star Chloe Brockett.
Frankie also dated Harry Lee while on the ITVBe reality show.
In April 2023, Frankie started seeing ex footballer Luke Paris, with the couple remaining together for a year before their split.

WITH the weather getting colder over the festive season, many of us have finally cranked up the heating indoors.
But one little-known side-effect of blasting the radiator is the impact it can have on your hair.
Heat from your radiator acts as a moisture-zapper on the air around it.
And this in turn can turn your locks dry and brittle.
Those on a hair growth journey know that this leads to increased damage and breakage.
Which will stunt your hair growth and likely cause you stress too.
But hair care fanatics online have been overjoyed to find out that there is a very simple solution.
And even better – it’s going to cost you just £4.93
Hair care brand @INALA posted a TikTok explaining to followers how investing in a common household humidifier can save their strands.
In the video, they explain: “Three super simple ways to protect your hair during winter:
“Number one, buy a humidifier.
“Indoor heaters cause the air in your home to become super dry, which zaps all the moisture from your hair.
“So having a humidifier ensures that the air stays moisturised and so does your hair.”
You can pick up a humidifier from online retailers like Temu for as little as £4.93
A humidifier adds moisture to the air in the room by evaporating water into it.
Hair loss tips
We can lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, according to the NHS.
It is not usually something to worry about, but occasional it can be a sign of a medical concern.
These include illness, stress, cancer treatment, weight loss and iron deficiency.
The NHS advises to book an appointment with your GP to see if you can get to the cause of it.
Experts at American Academy of Dermatology Association also recommend to eat healthy, limit curling irons and only use them for special occasions.
They also recommend using a gentle shampoo, and make use of leave-in conditioners.
And although some of us may recoil at the pairing of the words ‘humidity’ and ‘hair’, adding small amounts of humidity to the air can actually be beneficial for your tresses.
The point of using a humidifier isn’t to replicate an exotic and tropical destination (as nice as that sounds!) – it’s to maintain the optimal 40-60% humidity you need to keep your hair sleek and smooth.
So you don’t need to panic about frizz ruining your day.
And if you can’t get your hands on one, try hopping in a steamy shower.
How can a steamy shower help your hair?
- Scalp cleansing
The heat from shower steam can open up the pores on your scalp, removing all the dirt and grime that naturally builds up there. - Improve the absorption of products
The steam will also open up your hair cuticles, which means you’ll get your money’s worth from your expensive hair care products! The formulas will be able to penetrate your strands more deeply and provide the maximum moisturise hit you need.
Following these simple tips can help to ensure your hair stays moisturised, smooth and sleek during the colder seasons.
Shopper reveals how you can bag tubs of Quality Street, Celebrations and Roses for just £2.50
DELIVEROO users can potentially get more than £10 off tubs of their favourite Christmas chocolates thanks to a savings hack.
You can get three tubs of Quality Street, Celebrations, Heroes and Roses for just £2.50 each from One Stop on Deliveroo if you follow these steps.
Shoppers are rushing to pick up the tubs[/caption]According to the tip-off from a user called bunny_boiler on HotUKDeals, One Stop is selling £5 tubs of the festive chocolate favourites.
You can then use the code ROOUK10 on Deliveroo to get £10 off a £15 spend across your first four orders if you’re a new customer.
Of course, this does mean this deal won’t be available if you’re using a Deliveroo account you’ve already ordered from.
The savvy saver says using this trick will take your spend to £7.59 including delivery – or £2.53 a tub – down from £15 plus delivery.
Your delivery fee may vary depending on how far you are from the shop, and some One Stop stores appear to be selling the tubs for £6.
It’s also worth noting that stock varies across stores and deals can get snapped up quickly, so you might not find the tubs in stock at your local One Stop.
The Sun did see the chocolate tubs still available in stores in Salford and Taunton, for example, but stocks appeared to be lower in London.
It could be worth phoning your local store in advance to check their stock levels before trying to order.
The deal expires on 31 December just before midnight.
One HotUKDeals user said they managed to get three tubs for £6.30 using the hack, while another said: “Order for £8.09 for 3 tubs. Also added loaf of bread as needed that anyway, so saves nipping out later!”
Another said: “I ordered mine last night when I got home, had to try 4 different one stops as some didn’t have all the tins in stock.
Arrived 20 mins later for £6.80.”
A third said: “Worked for me. Thank you for the share.”
If you’re buying tubs of Quality Street, Roses or Heroes elsewhere, the cheapest you can find them for is £6.
Tubs of Celebrations are slightly cheaper at £4.49 at Aldi, although they are selling for £6 at Asda.
Therefore if you bought three tubs of the chocolates in your local supermarket, you would be paying up to £18.
That means if you buy using this deal instead, you’ll make a maximum saving of £10.41.
What other savings can you get on Quality Street?
If you’re looking for more savings on Quality Street – after all, it is a Christmas staple – three retailers have started selling the tins even bigger and cheaper.
Home Bargains is selling the 813g metal tin for just £7.99 – the equivalent of 98p per 100g of chocolate.
Asda and Sainsbury’s are selling them for a penny more at £8, much lower than the typical retail price of £12.
These are better value than the £6 600g plastic tubs sold at Tesco and Aldi, which are the equivalent of £1 per 100g.
To get the deal at Sainsbury’s, you will need to have a Nectar card – otherwise, the tin will set you back £12 instead.
You don’t need a loyalty card for the Home Bargains or Asda deals.
Another great deal can be found at Morrisons, where you can get two 600g Quality Street tubs for £7 – working out at just 58p per 100g.
To take advantage of the savings, you will need to be a Morrisons More card member.
Elsewhere, Lidl is currently offering Lidl Plus members the chance to pick up Quality Street, Roses or Heroes tubs for £4.49 each, or two for £8.
It’s always worth shopping around first to get the best deals ahead of Christmas.
Supermarkets will often battle it out to offer the best deals on household staples and Christmas favourites in the run-up to the big day.
You can compare prices of certain products across the major supermarkets through trolley.co.uk.
Price Spy and Price Runner are worth a go to get a cross-section across a wider range of retailers too.

Inside Eddie Jordan’s fast paced life from owning F1 team, to presenting on Top Gear and circling globe on a £32m yacht
EDDIE JORDAN has revealed he’s been battling an “aggressive cancer”.
The F1 legend, 76, was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer earlier this year which then spread.
Keen musician Jordan also plays drums in a rock and roll band[/caption] Eddie Jordan had a successful career as a team owner in F1 with Jordan Grand Prix[/caption]He said he’s had some “dark days” and urged people to go out and get tested and spoke about the importance of looking after one’s body.
In an appearance on his Formula For Success podcast, which he hosts alongside David Coulthard, Jordan said: “We’ve kind of alluded to it David, over the shows. Way back in March and April, I was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer.
“And then it spread into the spine and the pelvis, so it was quite aggressive. And we’ve all heard about our wonderful friend Sir Chris Hoy, who is an absolute megastar, and he [was] coming out and talking about illness such as like what I’ve got, but he’s a far younger man.
“But this is a little message for all the anchors and everybody listening to this: don’t wait or put it off.
“Go and get tested, because in life you’ve got chances and there is so much medical advice out there and so many things that you can do to extend your lifetime. Go and do it.
“Don’t be stupid, don’t be shy. It’s not a shy thing – look after your body, guys.
“We’ll move on, but yes, some very dark days in there – but we pulled out of it, thankfully.”
Jordan has enjoyed an epic life in racing, from launching his own career to owning F1 teams, and becoming a pundit and TV host.
Away from the sport, he’s a keen sailor and boating enthusiast – who once splashed the cash on a boat formerly owned by a US politician, and has circumnavigated the world.
Rock and roll fan Jordan, who’s understood to be worth around £470million, also loves music and plays drums in a band, while his art collection is mint.
Racing career
Age 15, Jordan contemplated becoming a priest. Then, he toyed with the idea of accountancy, taking a course, before getting a job at a bank in Ireland.
During a work trip in Jersey, he discovered go-karting – returning to his native country and buying a go-kart.
He had a natural flair for the sport.
Jordan entered the Irish Kart Championship in 1971 – winning it.
In ’74, he moved to Formula Ford, the Irish Formula Ford Championship and, in 1975, to Formula Three.
However, he was forced to sit out the entire ’76 season after shattering his leg in a crash.
Jordan soon switched to Formula Atlantic, where he won three races in the 1977 season.
In ’78 he won the Irish Formula Atlantic Championship – racing in British Formula Three a year later for Team Ireland.
Jordan had his own racing career in the 70’s after discovering a love of motorsport[/caption] Soon, Jordan, a former accountant, would want to be a team owner himself.[/caption]In the late 70s Jordan raced once in Formula Two and did some test driving for McLaren.
But, soon his thoughts began drifting towards life away from behind the wheel.
Team owner
Come 1979, he founded his own team – Eddie Jordan Racing.
Touring car drivers David Leslie and David Sears ran for him, as did James Weaver in European F3.
Jordan also hired Martin Brundle, now famed for his celebrity grid walk interviews, who finished second to Ayrton Senna in British F3.
In 1987, Johnny Herbert won the team the British Formula Three Championship.
In 1991, Jordan had grander plans. After hiring Reynard chief designer Gary Anderson, he founded Jordan Grand Prix and entered Formula 1.
They quickly punched above their weight thanks to the quality of drivers that drove for the team.
Jordan memorably gave Michael Schumacher his first start in F1 in the team’s debut season.

After one start, the German was lured to Benetton.
However, in 1998 the team achieved its best ever result when Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher finished first and second at the Belgian Grand Prix.
A year later, they had Heinz-Harald Frentzen as a genuine contender for the world championship, until he fell away.
In 2005, Jordan finally sold up – Midland Group, financed by wealthy Russian-Canadian businessman Alex Shnaider, bought the team and renamed it MF1 Racing.
Following a hiatus from motor racing, Jordan returned to F1 as a pundit and has worked for BBC Sport, Channel 4, and is a regular now on Sky Sports.
Yacht owner
Away from racing, Jordan loves sailing.
He has owned several boats, including the biggest Sunseeker Yacht ever built.
Blush eddie jordan yacht[/caption]It featured a nightclub and a parking garage for jet skis as well as opulent dining rooms, lounges, bars, viewing decks, jacuzzis, bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms
It reportedly set him back £32million, but he decided to sell it in 2017.
He revealed to Boat International that his busy schedule only allowed him to enjoy two weeks a year on it, and it wasn’t worth the £1.2m running costs, including fuel, dockage, maintenance, insurance and crew salaries.
Jordan also owned a 45-metre sailing boat called Blush, which he recently sold for around £9m.
His passion for sailing allowed him to tick off a dream on his bucket list.
“I was very lucky to circumnavigate the world so that’s no longer on the bucket list,” Jordan revealed.
Back in the paddock
For all his love of the ocean, motorsport is still clearly his biggest love.
In 2016, he became a presenter for the revamped Top Gear, alongside Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc.
But he’s at home when he’s in the paddock – working as an analyst.
In recent years, he’s been a regular on Sky Sports – delivering his expert opinion.
While he remains outspoken on his podcast Formula For Success, alongside David Coulthard.
Long may we continue hearing Jordan’s expertise on the world of F1.

NEVER mind Gavin and Stacey, The King, Corrie and EastEnders.
Emma Paton will be on our telly more than any other person this festive season as presenter of Sky Sports’ coverage of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.
The Sky Sports host is the face of darts coverage[/caption] She admits she loves hosting a sport she loves despite the gruelling schedule[/caption] Paton loves seeing the sport grow[/caption] She regularly interviews the biggest stars like Luke Littler[/caption] She is the unofficial queen of Alexandra Palace[/caption]There will be a whopping 106 hours of arrows beamed into living rooms over the next three weeks.
The TV Queen of the Palace has opened up to SunSport about the epic tournament on her favourite dinosaur costumes, eating Celebrations chocolates in the studio and being the glamorous new face of the sport.
On being on TV more than anyone this Christmas, she admitted: “I’ve actually never thought of it like that! It’s just a luxury to talk about something you love.
“I saw a post on X recently which said: ‘When you were a kid Christmas was all about presents, as an adult Christmas is about darts’. That summed it up really well actually.
“This year there’s been more interest than ever in the weeks leading up to it.
“I was in Sky Sports News this week doing football promos and all that people wanted to talk about was the darts. There’s so much more hype.
“I work with some great people like John Part, Wayne Mardle and Mark Webster.
“I’ve been lucky to come to darts at a time when it feels like it has exploded.
“There’s always been stories and darts has been brilliant for characters, back to the likes of Eric Bristow.
“Before both the Lukes, Michael van Gerwen was this mean machine character and Peter Wright colourful and crazy.
“Turning up last year at the Worlds, Luke Humphries had been a robot winning machine almost with wins before the Ally Pally.
“But then seeing the Littler story unfold in front of our eyes, it’s like that age old saying, sport just isn’t scripted. You just don’t know what is going to happen.
“The last couple of years I’ve been lucky to be the storytelling part of it.
“It’s weird being in that studio because you are in a prime location, like in a dream-like state, because you are above everything.
“When I’m in there with the likes of John Part, Wayne Mardle and Mark Webster, the lights are on, there’s monitors in front of you and you can see the output.
“But when the play is on the stage, it’s very quiet in there with just one cameraman and one sound guy or girl. We are just watching the darts and making notes. You just flit into a time when you are a fan.
“We’ve had so many big stories. Fallon Sherrock exploded onto the scene and she was suddenly on breakfast TV and Billie Jean King was messaging her on social media.
“The greatest leg then happened, that went on for weeks and Michael Smith was on TV even in America.
“Rocking up to the Ally Pally last year for the final and the amount of news crews there, everyone wanted to talk about it. That has continued throughout the year.
“I turn up hours before and Sarah-Jane Mee from Sky News was already there in make-up. That’s how big the story was, I was almost taken aback!”
Darts certainly has a different persona nowadays from the early halcyon era of the 80s. Darts has gone from beer bellies and bullseyes to beauties!
Paton, 30, is the ultimate professional. She has a degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University and a Master’s in Sports Journalism from St Mary’s University Twickenham.
She had previously worked as part of the media team for Team GB during the 2012 London Olympics.
Paton heads a presenting squad along with the likes of the brilliant Polly James, Abigail Davies and Laura Turner.
She added: “I’m lucky to work for Sky who have pushed women forward and we deserve to be in certain roles.
“We have Laura Turner, the best female commentator in darts, Polly James and Abigail Davies as reporters.
“The sport has evolved as well. The pathway was in years gone by pubs and clubs. Now it’s youth academies.
“Some of the players are more on the athlete side of the spectrum. Luke Humphries has massively prioritised diet and speaking to a psychologist.
“The Littler effect has made a big difference with the demographic. The amount of under-35s watching darts has almost doubled. The female viewership is also at an all-time high.
“Littler has taken the sport where it’s never been before. On the Jonathan Ross sofa, Boohooman advert and nominated for Sports Personality of the Year.”
Paton, a former 400 metre runner, is often seen by her 207,000 followers on Instagram going through a gruelling training regime. But she admits it’s tougher during the Worlds.
She added: “When you say super-fit that makes me laugh, I’m not that!
“Weirdly training has become more important now to me than ever before. If I don’t train for a week, I go a bit stir crazy!
“During the Worlds it’s tough because it’s quite a relentless tournament. Before it starts I plan out when I can go out for a run and go to a hotel gym.
“I stay off the mince pies but I’ll be honest, I’m not someone who is super restrictive. Generally I’m all about balance.
“If you saw me in the studio you’d see packets of different sweets, the Celebrations box is always open. That’s all I eat during the show!
“You never really stop. We get a couple of days off for Christmas.
“The first day is spent recovering from the previous nine days. The 25th you will try and relax and then 26th you are prepping for the next day back at the Ally Pally. I’m not quite looking at research notes while eating my turkey, but it’s not far off it!
Paton once admitted that her first World Darts Championship as presenter started by watching a fan dressed as a TRAFFIC CONE throw up into his shoe.
She added: “I definitely fan watch. We’ve all seen the traffic cones, Mario and Luigi, the nuns. Nowadays it needs to be even more out there to catch my eye.
“It’s hard to be different these days. I like the inflatable dinosaur costumes. I think of that person sitting there for hours. It will be good to see if there’s any new ideas this year!”
