Hypersonic ‘jumbo jet ROCKET’ hits 5,000mph in major step toward goal of flying passengers anywhere on Earth in 60mins
A ROCKET jet has hit a dizzying new speed of over 5,000mph – with hopes the project will one day be able to take passengers anywhere in the world in just 60 minutes.
Scientists behind the Chinese aircraft announced on December 10 that the test plane had reached a speed more than six times the speed of sound (Mach 6.56).
Concept art of the miraculous aircraft[/caption] The plane aims to take people into near-space[/caption] The jet can be seen blasting off on a 20 minute test flight[/caption] The project’s leader stressed this was just the first step[/caption]Amazing test footage shows the prototype launching rapidly into the air with trail of fire following its ascent.
The speedy jet reached a staggering 5,033mph.
Cui Kai, the project’s leader revealed the plane’s enormous speed could take passengers from Beijing to New York in two hours instead of the current 12 to 14.
Cui said in an October speech announcing the technology: “At the time, everyone thought it was a crazy idea.
“We faced almost universal scepticism. Fortunately, we chose to persevere.
“I always believed that innovation thrives amid doubt.
“The moment I saw that small aircraft soar into the sky, the sense of achievement and pride was truly indescribable.”
The imposing plane features a fat and round fuselage and cape-shaped wings on its back.
This means that in the future, hypersonic aircraft could carry just as many passengers or as much cargo as today’s jumbo jets.
They carried out the test flight at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert of northwest China in August 2021, and was kept secret until now.
The monumental breakthrough for aviation hasn’t just solved a speed issue, but an issue of logistical space inside the aircraft.
All hypersonic aircraft now capable of flying at speeds above Mach 5 have severely limited internal space, restricting their use to military applications such as missiles and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft.
At high speeds, the front of a large airframe experiences significant downward pressure, impairing its climbing ability.
Cui added a broad wing surface above the airframe to convert this downward pressure into upward lift, effectively turning a drawback into an advantage.
This is a major innovation in aircraft engineering, albeit turning a problem into something that can currently only be solved with an incredibly complex design.
CHALLENGES AHEAD
According to Cui, plenty of challenges lie ahead before the jet can take to the skies.
He continued: “For such cutting-edge technology, we still face numerous challenges that need to be addressed directly, including issues related to power, materials and structure.
“We have only completed a small fraction of the work and taken a modest step forward.”
Fans of aviation will remember the failed Concorde, suggesting just how difficult this kind of technology is to perfect and make safe.
Why did the Concorde fail?
THE Concorde remains one of the deadliest and most costly aircraft disasters in modern British history.
Concorde is a retired Anglo-French supersonic airliner, costing was estimated at £70million (£1.68billion in 2023).
Construction of the six prototypes began in February 1965, and the first flight took off from Toulouse on 2 March 1969.
Concorde was a tailless aircraft design with a narrow fuselage permitting 4-abreast seating for 92 to 128 passengers.
Delays and cost overruns increased the programme cost to £1.5–2.1 billion in 1976, (£11–16 billion in 2023).
Concorde needed to fly long distances to be economically viable; this required high efficiency from the powerplant.
Turbofan engines were rejected due to their larger cross-section producing excessive drag.
Developing a wholly-new engine for a single aircraft would have been extremely costly.
So, the existing BSEL Olympus Mk 320 turbojet engine was chosen instead even though it was not custom built for the Concorde.
It also faced critical overheating problems due to its speed and extreme air intake.
On 25 July 2000, Air France Flight 4590 crashed shortly after take-off with all 109 occupants and four on the ground killed.
This was the only fatal incident involving Concorde; commercial service was suspended until November 2001.
The surviving aircraft were retired in 2003, 27 years after commercial operations had begun.
One test costs hundreds of thousands of yuan, and the team had to carry out several on this prototype alone just to test it.
The Chinese scientists also have to watch out for competition from other countries, as the race for faster air travel intensifies.
The United States, is also working on hypersonic aircraft technology.
According to some accounts, the US Air Force plans to introduce the SR-72 “Darkstar,” a Lockheed Martin aircraft that is the fastest in the world with a Mach 6.0 speed.
Cui did not reveal whether a full-scale model of the aircraft has been constructed, is under construction, or the time period for its first flight.

MOTORISTS are being warned of the traffic hotspots to avoid this festive season with more than 23 million road users expected.
The high volume of predicted journeys has resulted in amber travel warnings being issued.
A record number of drivers could hit roads across this year’s festive period[/caption]Friday 20th has been singled out as the busiest day for festive journeys with the M25, M6 around Birmingham and the M4 out of London all expected to be busier than usual.
A record number of 23.7 million drivers could hit the roads before the weekend which has led to the AA announcing amber traffic warnings ahead of the Christmas Getaway period.
The caution has been extended to Saturday 21st and Monday 23rd, despite most drivers being expected to stay local.
Traffic hotspots have already been identified with Saturday expected to be particularly hectic for the M1 around Meadowhall, the M25 around Bluewater and the M60 around the Trafford Centre.
The AA’s estimates have also singled out the A34 from Oxford to Newbury and the M62 Simister Interchange.
Meanwhile, Monday could see chaos for parts of the M1, the M42 J3A to J8, the A64 around York and the A303 around Stonehenge.
Both the M5 from Bristol to Taunton, and the A34 Oxford to Newbury have been listed as potential traffic hotspots on the same day.
Estimates currently suspect only one per cent of drivers will venture further than 400 miles and some are hoping that festive journeys may be more spread out due to Christmas falling on a Wednesday.
In fact, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day are expected to be the quietest on the roads.
With most journey makers expected to be hopping into their vehicles for the purpose of visiting friends and family, nearly half will be heading out shopping.
Following the country suffering from storms and wintry weather, the AA have also issued advice for those planning on travelling amidst the busier roads and potentially adverse weather conditions.
Understanding the what3words app could be important if your car breaks down as it enables you to pinpoint your location and allow help to get to you quicker.
AA patrols will also be taking place across Christmas Day to rescue those in trouble.
Last year, 2,400 members were supported by the breakdown cover company on the 25th.
Currently, the Met Office has not ruled out snow on higher ground with temperatures expected to be around the seasonal norm.
Chris Wood, AA Patrol of the Year, said: “The Ghost of Christmas Past shows that each year, avoidable breakdowns snowball into miles of queues on the roads.
“Drivers can maintain the Christmas cheer by performing basic checks on their car before any journey.
“This includes topping up the windscreen wash and anti-freeze, checking your lights and adjusting tyre pressures for a full load if necessary.
“With people driving fewer miles, it means there will be more localised congestion as record numbers head out on the roads this festive period. The best way to ensure hassle-free journeys is to plan them well.
“Check the traffic reports before you leave and try to travel when it’s quieter if you can, or consider taking a different route to beat the jams.”
Traffic Hotspots
The AA has issued amber traffic warnings for the 20th, 21st and 23rd of December so it is important to take note of the hotspots if you're planning on making a journey during the festive period.

The cream has received thousands of glowing reviews from shoppers.
Some recommend only using a small amount of product on the areas that it, while others have raved about the effect of using it as an evening cream on the face for the ‘glass skin’ look.

New English campsite set to open with holiday lodges, swimming pool and nearby beach
A NEW campsite could soon open in the UK with a swimming pool, spa area and holiday lodges.
Plans have been put forward to build a new campsite on a former military site in Cornwall.
Plans have been put forward to build a new campsite on a former military site in Cornwall[/caption]Company Clerkenwell Estates (Holywell Bay) Ltd is proposing to build a campsite at Penhale Camp – a former military site.
The plans include creating a 67-unit holiday park with a swimming pool and spa.
It would also have an on-site restaurant and bar, a reception building and other facilities for staff.
There would also be nine new homes on-site.
Other existing buildings, including a historic farmhouse, would undergo refurbishment.
Holywell Bay Beach would also be nearby.
The wide sandy beach is backed by grassy dunes and surrounded by rocky islands.
While the beach is popular among swimmers and surfers, it becomes a haven for kids during low tide when shallow streams and rock pools emerge.
The planning application is currently awaiting approval from Cornwall Council Planning Committee, with a decision expected later this month.
Plans for the new campsite at Penhale Camp have been met with backlash from locals.
This is because the area where the site sits is home to fragile wildlife habitats like some of Europe‘s rarest flowers and plants as well as butterflies, insects and falcons.
The Kelsey Head and Penhale Dunes have been protected by a Site of Special Scientific Interest designation (SSSI) for decades.
Since 2004, Penhale Dunes have also been designated a Special Area of Conservation.
UK’S BEST CAMPSITES
Earlier this year, the best campsites in the UK were revealed by the camping experts Pitchup, who based their findings on 200,000 customer reviews from last year.
To feature in the list, the campsites must have achieved an average rating of 8/10 or above across at least 20 reviews in 2023.
Pitchup said the process enabled them to keep the list simple and relying solely on customer feedback ensures the list is both unbiased and reflects real user experiences.
They said: “We want to say a huge congratulations to the winning sites.
“Their outstanding average rating is the result of months of glowing reviews on Pitchup.com, showing that they provided a truly exceptional guest experience.”
If you want some camping tips ahead of a camping trip, the Sun’s Head of Travel Lisa Minot has revealed her top tips, having been camping for 50 years.
Three camping tips from an expert
David Scotland owns camping equipment retailer Outdoor World Direct and knows all about how to make a camping trip run smoothly.
When visiting any campsite this summer it’s important to make sure you’re not making simple mistakes that could ruin your holiday.
Check your tent
David recommends putting your tent up a couple of weeks before you’re due to travel to give you enough time to repair or replace any damaged parts.
He told Sun Online Travel: “You’d be surprised how many people turn up with broken tents.”
Test the ground
Picking a good spot to pitch your tent is difficult, with lots of things to consider.
One of those should be the condition of the ground you’re putting your tent on top of, according to David.
He said: “Once you’ve found the perfect spot, test the ground with your pegs before you commit to camping there to make sure the ground is soft enough.”
Don’t nap in your tent
It may seem the perfect place for it, but a nap in a tent could end badly, if it’s done at the wrong time of the day.
David explained: “If the sun’s shining and it’s hot inside your tent – don’t do it!
“One of our friends nodded off in his tent during a heatwave at Glastonbury and ended up at the medical tent with heatstroke.”
Instead, he recommends finding some shade outside or somewhere well ventilated.
Here’s another campsite in the UK, which people say is like being abroad.
And we’ve rounded up the UK’s best campsites for 2024.
The plans are awaiting approval from the local council[/caption]Injuries & suspensions update ahead of Gameweek 15: Latest news on Gabriel, Ollie Watkins and others
DREAM TEAM brings you all the latest injury, suspension and availability news ahead of Gameweek 15 in one easily digestible dose.
Mikel Arteta was characteristically vague when discussing player availability in his Friday press conference.
Arsenal’s head coach said one defender has a “possibility” of featuring against Everton on Saturday having trained and when pushed with a follow-up question he confirmed Gabriel as the player.
This weekend comes too soon for Riccardo Calafiori.
Gabriel is a “possibility”[/caption]On the other side of North London, Tottenham are once again without first-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
Plus, Yves Bissouma is suspended for the Lilywhites’ trip to Southampton.
A late decision will be made on Ollie Watkins after the Aston Villa striker picked up a “small injury” in Leipzig last time out.
Unai Emery and his team will assess the England international after Friday’s training session.
Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa are in contention to feature for Liverpool in some capacity when Fulham visit Anfield on Saturday.
Alisson returned against Girona in the Champions League, leaving only Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley on the injured list for certain.
Watkins was substituted at half-time in midweek[/caption]Chelsea have no fresh concerns as Wesley Fofana and Reece James remain injured while Mykhailo Mudryk may still be ill – Pedro Neto is suspended.
Rico Lewis is suspended for Sunday’s Manchester derby having been shown two yellow cards last weekend.
Manchester City will also be without defenders John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake, as well as long-term absentees Rodri and Oscar Bobb.
Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic are expected to make the matchday squad having been named on the bench against Juventus in midweek.
Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi may be sidelined for as long as four months having undergone surgery to address a quadriceps injury.
Cherries midfielder Marcus Tavernier is also expected to be out for the next few weeks.

Who is female ‘Celeb B’ who ‘watched Diddy & Jay-Z rape girl’? What we know about mystery star who’s ‘100% lawyering up’
THE identity of the female celebrity that allegedly watched Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs rape a 13-year-old girl currently remains unknown.
The pair allegedly assaulted the teen at an after party following the 2000 VMAs while the unidentified “Celebrity B” watched on.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and Jay-Z at The Two Kings Dinner in 2013[/caption] Jay-Z and Diddy attend the Pre-GRAMMY Gala in 2020[/caption] Jay-Z and Diddy hang out before the start of the 2004 NBA All-Star Game[/caption]Initially, the lawsuit stated Combs raped young girl while two unknown names – “Celebrity A” and “Celebrity B” – watched.
But Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, was named as Celebrity A in the refiled lawsuit on Sunday in New York by an anonymous accuser who now claims he and Combs raped her as “Celebrity B” watched.
It remains unknown just who Celebrity B is, but criminal defense lawyer Julia Jayne told Fox News Digital that the woman is “100 per cent lawyering up and probably reviewing a demand letter”.
She explained that unknown Celebrity B would likely not come forward “as it would then drag that celebrity’s name through the mud”.
The lawyer added: “Likely, that celebrity’s name will come out, but no celebrity wants to be associated with this case, even as a witness.
“It would be negative publicity.”
Meanwhile criminal defense lawyer Lauren Johnson-Norris suggested the identity of Celebrity B could have already been determined.
She said: “Any celebrity witness has consulted with a lawyer by now about this case.
“We can only guess to the extent Celebrity B has been interviewed by the plaintiff or if Celebrity B is already cooperating with the Plaintiff’s team.”
Johnson-Norris said it is “to be seen” if the unknown female celebrity “will say she was there on her own free will or if she was a victim as well.”
Defense attorney Oleg Nekritin said that most attorneys “will advise the celebrity that they have to fight like hell, first quietly, and then if named, loudly”.
He explained that if the celebrity settles the case, it would be seen as “an implicit admission of misconduct”.
And, unless there “is credible evidence of misconduct, the celebrity will not look to settle this case.”
The attorney said that instead the celebrity would want to “fight” and “protect their name”.
He added: “There will be no chance of this celebrity cooperating with the plaintiff unless there is strong proof of the celebrity’s misconduct.”
The claims made by an unnamed Jane Doe form part of a federal lawsuit filed against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, 55, in New York in October – refiled on Sunday to include Jay-Z.
It claims that Combs has “abused, molested, raped, assaulted, threatened and coerced women, minors and others” for decades.
And it describes his “close friend Shawn Carter [Jay-Z]” as being witness to “many” of his alleged crimes over the years.
Jay-Z and Diddy at a music release party in California in 2000 – the year of the alleged assault[/caption] Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sits during a bail hearing in September[/caption]Jay-Z has strongly denied the allegations – and described them as “blackmail”.
It tells how on September 7, 2000, Jane Doe tried to gain entry to the VMAs in New York City without a ticket.
Approaching limo drivers outside of the event, one of them claimed to be working for Diddy and invited her to an afterparty.
He allegedly said she “fit what Diddy was looking for”.
She was later driven to a house where the party was being held, and was made to sign a form she now believes may have been a non-disclosure agreement.
During the party she reportedly saw “widespread drug use” including “marijuana and cocaine”.
A waitress later offered her a drink which tasted “bitter” and after ingesting some of it, Jane Doe felt “woozy and lightheaded, making her need to lie down”.
She claims she found an empty bedroom in the house with only a bed inside, where she went to lie down without locking the door.
Shortly after Diddy, Jay-Z and an unnamed female celeb referred to only as “Celebrity B” entered the room.
Jay-Z's full statement following rape allegations
“My lawyer received a blackmail attempt, called a demand letter, from a “lawyer” … What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle.
No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!
These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!! Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree?
These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case.
This lawyer, who I have done a bit of research on, seems to have a pattern of these type of theatrics!
I have no idea how you have come to be such a deplorable human Mr. [X], but I promise you I have seen your kind many times over. I’m more than prepared to deal with your type. You claim to be a marine?! Marines are known for their valor, you have neither honor nor dignity.
My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people. I mourn yet another loss of innocence. Children should not have to endure such at their young age. It is unfair to have to try to understand inexplicable degrees of malice meant to destroy families and human spirit.
My heart and support goes out to true victims in the world, who have to watch how their life story is dressed in costume for profitability by this ambulance chaser in a cheap suit.
You have made a terrible error in judgement thinking that all “celebrities” are the same. I’m not from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of the project of Brooklyn. We don’t play these types of games. We have very strict codes and honor. We protect children, you seem to exploit people for personal gain. Only your network of conspiracy theorists, fake physics, will believe the idiotic claims you have levied against me that, if not for the seriousness surrounding harm to kids, would be laughable.
I look forward to showing you just how different I am.”
Diddy “aggressively approached Plaintiff with a crazed look in his eyes, grabbed her, and said, ‘You are ready to party!'”, the suit claims.
He then supposedly threw her towards a wall, before grabbing her and chucking her onto the bed.
Jay-Z then allegedly removed her clothes, before holding her down and raping her.
Afterwards he allegedly stepped back, allowing Diddy to do the same thing.
Jay-Z hit out at the claims in an explosive denial, dubbing the suit “blackmail”.
He insisted that the “heinous” allegations were not true and said he was heartbroken for his family.
In a statement given to The Sun he said: “My only heartbreak is for my family.
“My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people.”
The teen said she fought Diddy off after the second rape, ran out of the room and exited the house before dressing and fleeing on foot to a nearby gas station.
The female clerk allowed her to use the phone, which she called her dad on and asked him to come pick her up.
Some 20 years later she claims to still be suffering from a “deep depression” and “post-traumatic stress disorder and a seizure disorder caused by stress and trauma” following the alleged rapes.
The suit claims she “has had difficulty maintaining normal relationships and lives largely withdrawn from society”.
It also described the friendship between Diddy and Jay-Z as going beyond professional collaboration.
The filing reads: “His [Diddy’s] close friend Shawn Carter has been with Combs during many such instances described herein. Both perpetrators must face justice.
“Combs and Carter were not simply occasional collaborators in the music industry.
“The two men developed a close friendship that has been well-documented from the late 1990s to the present.”
The suit also claims that Combs liked to use “popular date-rape drug Rohypnol, or GHB, to commit heinous non-consensual acts of sexual violence and rape onto countless victims”.
Meanwhile unearthed pictures appear to show Jennifer Lopez in a blazing row with Sean “Diddy” Combs on the night he and Jay-Z allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl.
Shocking images show the moment the Bronx beauty and the disgraced rapper were locked in a heated argument before J Lo gave Combs a deathly stare and stormed away.
J Lo, 55, is pictured in the resurfaced photographs taken at the 2000 MTV VMAs afterparty with ex-boyfriend Diddy – the same night of the alleged assault.
In the images the former couple can be seen embroiled in a fiery argument as the singer scowled at Combs around dozens of party goers.
Visibly upset, she is seen standing by her sister Lynda and shouting at Diddy after their apparent argument.
It is unclear what caused the argument and there is nothing to suggest it was connected to the alleged rape.
Embattled rapper Diddy is currently being held in jail in New York ahead of a trial next May for racketeering and sex trafficking.
He has faced a slew of rape accusations and assault claims in recent months.
Diddy's downfall
By The U.S. Sun's Senior Reporter Forrest McFarland, who has been reporting on Diddy's legal battles for years
BEFORE Sean “Diddy” Combs’ arrest in September, it was highly speculated that the rap star would find himself in custody after he was repeatedly hit with disturbing accusations – and had two of his mansions raided by the feds.
His mounting legal troubles finally came to a head on September 17, when he was charged with three federal counts, including sex trafficking, for allegedly forcing victims to take part in drug-fueled sex parties he called “Freak Offs.”
Hours before his arrest, The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed the feds investigating Combs were secretly liaising with Tupac Shakur murder prosecutors on gangland activities.
The development also came after Combs was named 77 times in documents submitted by prosecutors in the Tupac murder case.
Aside from the Tupac probe, Combs was already facing a slew of lawsuits, including one he settled with his ex, Cassie Ventura, after she accused him of rape and abuse.
Disturbing hotel surveillance video from 2016 showed Combs chasing Cassie down and then punching, kicking, and beating her in a hallway.
Two months earlier, in March 2024, two of Combs’ mansions were raided by federal investigators, who seized three AR-15s, drugs, and 1,000 bottles of lube which were part of his “Freak Off” supplies.
In addition to his federal criminal charges, Combs also faces a handful of lawsuits with allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and sex trafficking dating back to the early 1990s.
Music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones filed one suit in February 2024, claiming Combs forced him to hire sex workers and participate in sex acts while he worked on his latest album.
Combs has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the federal sex trafficking charges against him, but his battle is far from over.
He faces life in prison if he’s convicted on all counts.
