Britain’s 9 cheapest cities to buy a pint revealed as average price soars above £5 – where does your local rank?

WITH summer just around the corner, the cheapest cities to buy a pint in Britain have now been revealed.

The average price of a pint is set to soar above £5 in a devastating shock for beer lovers.

The average price of a pint is set to soar above £5 in a devastating shock for beer lovers

And in many cities, the price for a pint can average around £6.

The British Beer and Pub Association said the average cost of a pint will rise from around £4.80 to £5.01.

The research, commissioned alongside Frontier Economics, showed pub firms are expecting to raise the average price of a pint by 21p.

The increase follows a series of cost increases announced in last October’s Budget, which will come into force next month.

Some brewers have already warned that they will need to push up prices to cope with the additional costs.

Among them is Shepherd Neame, which brews ales including Spitfire and Bishops Finger.

However, there are still places in the UK where you can get a pint without burning a hole in your pocket.

Drinkers looking for the cheapest pint in the UK have been urged to visit Derby, where the average pint is just £3.60.

And you can get a pint for just £4 in cities like Aberdeen, Leicester, Luton and Southend.

In Newcastle, the average pint is £4.90, and in Liverpool and Manchester, a beer will set you back a fiver, analysis by card payment solutions provider Takepayments found.

Jodie Wilkinson, of Takepayments, said: “The idea that northern cities are universally ‘cheap’ is being challenged, with places like Manchester now ranking among the least affordable.”

Edinburgh and Manchester were found to be two of the most expensive cities outside of London for eating out.

A three-course meal in these two cities will set you back £20 more than Nottingham’s average of £70.

Rising costs

In February Heineken pushed up the price of its draught beer by an average of 2.97% for pubs.

The company is known for brewing beverages including Birra Moretti, Fosters and Tiger.

The company also increased the cost of its wholesale packaged products by an average of 2.5%.

Simon Dodd, chief executive of Young’s said the chain plans to increase its prices by between 2.5% and 3%.

Wetherspoons has also recently hiked the price of some of its drinks and meal deals by up to 30p after a warning from its boss Tim Martin.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, warned that the only way many pubs can stay open is to pass on the upcoming costs to consumers.

She said: “No one wants to see the cost of an average pint increase by a further 21p and break the £5 average pint barrier that will be required for pubs to maintain their punishingly slim profit margins.”

She added that it is “more urgent than ever” that the Government looks at ways to cap or reduce the cost of doing business so we can keep pubs open, preserve their community value and ensure the price of a pint remains affordable.

Breweries and pubs struggle

Pubs and breweries across the UK have struggled in recent years as the high cost of living has dented customers’ budgets.

The increased cost of brewing, beer prices and rising energy bills have also had an impact.

Figures published by the Altus Group revealed more than 400 pubs across England and Wales were demolished or converted for other uses in the year to December.

As a result, the number of pubs across the two countries fell below 39,000 for the first time.

More than 34 pubs a month called last orders for the final time over the year – the sharpest fall in pub numbers since 2021 during the coronavirus pandemic.

How can I save money at Wetherspoons?

FREE refills - Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.

Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.

So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.

Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.

For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.

Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.

Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.

Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.

Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.

It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.

As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.

I apologised to Olympic boxing hero’s mum after David Beckham mistakenly said she’d died live on TV, reveals Gabby Logan

Crossed wires meant Becks claimed boxer Luke Campbell’s mum and sister had previously died in a car crash[/caption]

Beckham had been a brand ambassador for the Games, with Team GB racking up record medal hauls.

But information he was told by Logan before the recording about boxer Luke Campbell’s family turned out to be wildly inaccurate.

Logan revealed the toe-curling exchange during an appearance on hit podcast Sporting Misadventures with Sir Chris Hoy.

Asked if she’d had any on-air disasters, the Beeb presenter took us way back 13 years.

She explained: “It was the final day of the Olympics – that day when you just lose track of everything that is going on.

“There was a bit of boxing and [me and Beckham] were chatting through this VT [before going on air].

“I said to David, ‘It’s really tragic, this boxer, his mum and sister died this year in a car accident’.

“We were going to move on [when live on air] and not talk about boxing at all.

“But David decided to bring that news to the public.”

Logan revealed the show continued as normal before her producer told her to “go back into the studio”.

She continued: “I thought they’d got cake! Or champagne for the last day.

“We go back in and I see the Olympic flame is still burning, I realised we’re still on air.

“In my ear they said, ‘Luke Campbell’s mum and sister didn’t die in a car accident’.

“I’m sitting on the sofa, out of vision, thinking ‘Oh my God’.”

Logan announced live that “erroneous information” had reached the studio and “Luke Campbell’s mum and sister are alive and well”.

What do David Beckham’s tattoos mean?

Hands

Starting with the hands, and David Beckham has the word “Love” inked across the top of his left hand, with a swallow on either side.

This is joined by the numbers 723, a combination of the shirts he famously wore for Manchester United and later Real Madrid.

On his little finger, he has the year he was married.

Becks also has a small female-stick figure designed by his daughter Harper.

The devoted husband has “Posh” tattooed on a finger as a nod to wife Victoria Beckham‘s Spice Girls nickname.

Arms

Becks has two sleeve tattoos on both his arms with the centrepieces paying tribute to his marriage to Victoria.

The most famous of his body art comes in the shape of her name along the inside of his forearm, which is inked in Sanskrit.

Both Posh and Becks have Hebrew tattoos, which they got to celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary.

The matching tatts translate to, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine”.

Meanwhile, Becks also has a separate rose inking on his left arm to mark the couple’s tenth anniversary.

Neck

One of Beckham’s most famous tattoos is on his neck, which is a gothic style cross and wings.

It is symbolic of to his religion and acts as a protective guardian of his son Romeo, whose name is tattooed just below the angel wings.

Beckham also has the name of his daughter, Harper, on the side of his neck.

This was later updated to include the words “Pretty Lady”, to mark her fourth birthday.

Back

Beckham’s back tattoos serve as tribute to his sons.

He has angel wings at the top as a sign of protection for them.

Becks has both his eldest on Brooklyn, and his youngest son Cruz‘s names inked across his back.

Body

Beckham has a large chest tattoo that is an image of himself as Jesus, with three cherubs representing his sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz.

The footy ace also has a vertical tattoo down his left side in Chinese symbols – this translates as “Death and life have determined appointments”.

Paying homage to his father, he has an inking of a ship at full mast – which is identical to the same one his dad has.

Hoy gasped in response to the story: “Oh wow.”

Logan added: “David Beckham was walking down the corridor asking, ‘So who died? Did anybody die?”

Hoy laughed that Beckham had “really dropped” Logan in it.

The Beeb presenter called Campbell’s mum the next morning to apologise.

She added: “It was hilarious, she was brilliant about it all.”

Explaining the error, Logan said: “What had happened was we had this amazing office.

“It had banks and banks of monitors.

Beckham was walking down the corridor asking, ‘So who died? Did anybody die?”

Gabby LoganSporting Misadventures with Chris Hoy

“We were livestreaming all sports at once. There was so much going on.

“There was a boxing match going on and it was Luke Campbell, he was going to win gold.

“There was another guy – the subs guy who does the stats – and he was sat on a different monitor behind me.

“He was going ‘This guy is amazing, his mum and sister died in a car accident this year’.

“And he was watching someone completely different.”

Bantamweight star Campbell clinched gold for Team GB at the London Olympics, beating Satoshi Shimizu in the final.

He turned pro in July 2013, going on to win 20 of his 24 fights, with 16 by KO.

US & Israel planning to unleash HUGE Iran blitz to destroy Ayatollah’s chilling nuke strength in ‘long overdue’ attack

IRAN’S nuclear programme should have been dealt with “a long time ago”, a senior Israeli political source has warned.

But insiders in Jerusalem say the US and Israel are now preparing to unleash a strike on Iran to finally destroy the threat of its nuke capabilities.

Tehran in return has warned it will blitz a US base after President Donald Trump insisted he was willing to bomb Iran if its leaders fail to reach a nuclear deal with Washington.

Trump vowed: “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing… it will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before.”

The US president has even massed B-2 bombers at a US base – said to be 30 per cent of the US Air Force’s stealth bomber fleet.

Senior diplomatic sources have warned Iran is “much closer than anyone can be comfortable with” in developing nukes.

They claimed Tehran will be in a position to enrich enough Uranium 233 to produce several fission weapons by the end of the month.

A senior Israeli politician in Jerusalem told The Sun it is more important now than ever to stop Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s nuclear ambitions.

The insider said: “This should have been avoided a long time ago.

“It should stop. It’s not just a crazy insistence. It’s extremely important for the stability of Israel and the world.

“The whole world should make an effort to make sure that Iran is restrained.”

Tensions in Israel are high as Iran is regarded as the “head of the snake” for terror – acting as a puppet master for proxies including Hamas and Hezbollah.

An Israeli diplomatic source warned it is crucial a deal be thrashed out with Iran to temper its nuclear programme.

They said: “From Israel’s perspective, with Trump in the White House, this represents the optimum moment to deal with Iran. There won’t be a better chance.

“Obtaining precise intelligence on just how far Iran’s nuclear programme has advanced has always been hard to obtain.

“But the reality is they’re much much closer than anyone can be comfortable with. And they have been for some time.”

Since Hamas’ barbaric assault on October 7, 2023, Israel has come under fire from Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis.

Iran has long used terror proxies to do its dirty work for it.

But IDF sources told The Sun Tehran is now “many, many steps back” as Israeli forces have been working for months to clear the path for a major strike on Iran.

They told how three air campaigns in Iran have eliminated most aerial defences which were “the main obstacle”.

The IDF insider said it has worked to significantly downgrade the threat posed by Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthi – effectively leaving Iran isolated.

They told The Sun: “Over the past year, we struck in Yemen three or four times, and we had three air campaigns in Iran, eliminating on the way most of the aerial defence systems in Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

“They were the main obstacle when thinking about a big aerial operation on the way to Iran. Their proxy aerial defence systems.”

Iran unleashed a barrage of more than 300 drones and missiles on Israel last April in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East closer to a region-wide war.

Almost all of them were intercepted thanks to Israel’s robust Iron Dome mechanism.

The Sun this week visited an Iron Dome system battery at a secret location in the country’s south protecting the area from incoming projectiles.

IDF sources say the mobile all-weather air defence system has around a 94 per cent success rate in intercepting rockets.

But Shelly Tal Meron, a member of the Israeli Knesset, warned Israel “cannot afford” for Iran to have nuclear weapons.

Speaking in Jerusalem, the Yesh Atid Party politician said “there is no question” that Tehran is the “head of the snake”.

She said: “There is no question that there are threats to the free world. When it comes to Israel, it’s an existential threat.

“We cannot afford to have Iran have nuclear weapons.

“I think that the world is waking up to this reality and understanding that the Iranian regime is not only a problem for the State of Israel but other countries as well.

“I think President Trump is also very involved in that. He said himself that he prefers to do it not through war. Of course, I agree. It’s always better to solve things in diplomacy.”

But Shelly said Israel may have no other choice but to directly stop Iran’s nuclear weapon development if talks fail.

“This is not something new, but it’s becoming more and more dangerous,” she added.

It comes as Donald Trump has positioned at least six B-2 bombers to the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia in a massive show of force against Iran.

The US leader and his defence chief Pete Hegseth warn of decisive action against Tehran and its proxies.

American jets continue to attack the Tehran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen – but Trump has vowed he is willing to bomb Iran as nuke talks stall.

The president has been pushing Iran to make a deal over its nuclear capabilities – saying on March 19 he would give Ayatollah Khamenei two months to come to the table to make an agreement or face dire consequences.

But Iran this week rejected any direct negotiations as tensions again flare in the Middle East.

Iranian armed forces this week called for a preemptive strike on the Diego Garcia base before the US could use it to target the Islamic Republic.

Military commanders mulled targeting the station, which sits in Britain’s Chagos Islands, in a bid to deter Trump from blasting Iran.

Last night, the president formally signed off Keir Starmer’s controversial agreement for the UK to give away the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

Iran's accelerates nuclear development

Exclusive by Katie Davis, Chief Foreign Reporter (Digital)

IRAN is believed to have accelerated its nuclear weapons development and is building terrifying nuclear warheads for solid-fuel missiles with a range exceeding 1,800 miles (3,000km).

A powerful blast from Iran could impact on several continents due to the chilling capability of the warheads.

Italy, Ukraine, Sudan, India and even large swaths of Russia would all potentially be in the firing line.

They are being developed at two sites in Shahrud and Semnan, which were previously pinned as rocket or space satellite launch sites.

A third site, Sorkheh Hesar, is also said to be carrying out projects, including research on nuclear power and underground explosions.

Nukes are being quickly created under the watchful eye of the regime’s nuclear weaponization entity, the Organization for Advanced Defense Research (SPND).

Bosses are developing nuclear warheads for the solid-fuel Ghaem-100 missiles, which are equipped with mobile launch platforms at the Shahrud site.

Iran’s rocket designers have used North Korea’s missiles as a guide to develop the Ghaem-100 missile.

When the missile was in a very early testing stage in 2011, dozens of missile experts were killed at the Modarres site in Tehran.

Personnel vehicles are banned from entering the Shahrud site and are forced to park at a checkpoint before people are transported in.

Meanwhile, they are using the liquid fuel missile Simorgh to develop nuclear warheads in Semnan.

Iran has staged three successful Ghaem-100 missile launches over the past two years, enhancing the regime’s capability to deploy nuclear weapons.

Near-supersonic jet that can fly London-New York at speeds ‘not seen since Concorde’ unveiled with luxury living spaces

A NEW near-supersonic jet with luxury living spaces, a full kitchen and a shower room is set to take flight this year.

Jet maker Bombardier has unveiled its new Global 8000 private jet which will blast high-flying passengers through the sky at Mach 0.94 – or 715mph (1,152kmh).

It’s a far cry from the squished economy seats on a standard commercial carrier[/caption]

It will be the fastest civil jet in the world – surpassing the record-holding Cessna Citation X+ that tops speeds of Mach 0.935.

“You can go from New York to London at speeds that haven’t been experienced by a civilian since the days of Concorde,” Stephen McCullough, Bombardier’s senior vice-president of engineering and product development, told the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

While it won’t match the speeds of the long-retired Anglo-French jet, no civil plane has flown faster since the Concorde.

The Concorde flew at Mach 2.04 – more than double the speed of Bombardier’s Global 8000.

During test flights in 2021, the Global 8000 broke the speed of sound – reaching a maximum speed of Mach 1.015.

However, once it’s in service, the private jet will fly no faster than Mach 0.94.

The Canadian company says the jet will go into service in the second half of 2025.

There will be capacity for 19 passengers onboard, who can stretch their legs out across four living spaces, two bathrooms and a crew rest area.

Its ‘principal suite’ boasts a full-sized bed, large wardrobe, six ultra-large windows and a 32-inch HD TV.

It’s a far cry from the squished economy seats on a standard commercial carrier.

Emmanuel Bornand, Bombardier’s vice-president of international sales, told SCMP that “the Global 8000 was designed with a mindset of delivering our clients the ultimate, no-compromise aircraft.”

The jet will be able to take off from shorter runways at more remote airports, thanks to its Smooth Flex Wing design, according to Bombardier.

The company claims the Global 8000 will be able to fly to as many as 2,000 more airports than its closest competitor.

This can save passengers time, and also allow them to go to quieter destinations.

Bornand added: “There was a time in aviation when you had to make trade-offs – choosing between using smaller, more convenient airports, speed and range, or a more pleasant cabin experience versus faster flights on more turbulent wings.

“In the case of the Global 8000, you get it all. Bringing the best range, speed and ability to go to smaller airports with a four-zone cabin makes this aircraft unique.”

Why did the Concorde fail?

CONCORDE was the supersonic passenger jet considered the ultimate luxury in air travel.

Air France and British Airways announced they would be retiring their fleet of Concorde planes on April 10, 2003.

The plane had its first commercial flight on January 21, 1976, and was retired after 27 years of service and 50,000 flights.

Several reasons led to the decision to retire Concorde.

Air France and British Airways cited low passenger numbers and high maintenance costs.

By the early noughties, the planes were outdated and expensive to run, despite being incredibly advanced when they were first introduced almost three decades previously.

The 9/11 terrorist attack in 2001 majorly impacted passenger numbers, as people opted not to fly.

Passenger numbers also fell after an Air France Concorde crashed just minutes after taking off from Paris in July 2000.

The disaster killed all 109 people on board and four others on the ground.

The plane ran over a small piece of metal on the runway, which burst a tyre and caused an engine to ignite.

It was also the only aircraft in the British Airways fleet that required a flight engineer.

Yesterday, we exclusively revealed how Catherine, 24, and Omar, 26, had split up, just weeks after leaving the All Stars villa.

During their time on the show, they were a huge hit with Love Island fans, and came in fourth place during the series finale at the end of February.

But just over a month later, The Sun revealed how they have now broken up.

Today, Catherine threw some shade at her ex Omar, when she reposted a TikTok video entitled “no second chances”

In the short clip TikToker Bigbossvette talks about how she won’t take her man back, because if he’s done “f***ed up s**t” before, he’ll do it again”.

She then adds that her ex “better not come round” her again.

The fact that Catherine chose to repost this clip, suggests she doesn’t want anything more to do with Omar.

THE BREAK-UP

There had been speculation over the last few weeks that Catherine and Omar had broken up.

It came after they went social media silent on each other.

Their last public appearance together was at the All Stars wrap party, where they were seen laughing and chatting with fellow finalists.

After that, they kept a low profile regarding their relationship, fueling rumours of a break-up.

Yesterday, The Sun exclusively revealed the REAL reason why Catherine and Omar decided to split.

An insider told us: “They never reached ‘exclusive’/boyfriend-girlfriend stage so it just had run its course.”

GOING ON ALL STARS

Catherine and Omar knew each other before going on Love Island All Stars.

Although they appeared in different seasons of the ITV2 dating show, like most Islanders, they moved in the same social circles and had mutual friends in London.

Omar previously confessed to having his eye on Catherine before entering the villa, and made a beeline for her when he joined the show on Day 19.

During their time All Stars, the couple had a smooth run compared to some of the other Islanders, and made it to the grande finale where they came in fourth.

Just five weeks ago, Omar thanked to Catherine for getting him to the final.

Sharing loved up snaps, he wrote online: “From the deepest part of my heart I just wanna say thank you to everyone who’s supported my journey as well as Catherine’s because without her things wouldn’t be this way.

“I can’t wait to show you all more fun times ahead as we embark on this new journey in life!”

Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be and the Catherine and Omar are now single again – maybe they can try again on All Stars next year.
