‘They had their chances’ – Ruben Amorim hits back over Anthony Elanga claims after star comes back to bite Man Utd

RUBEN AMORIM has hit back over claims that Manchester United made a mistake by selling Anthony Elanga.

Elanga, 22, was the match-winner on Tuesday as Nottingham Forest beat Man Utd 1-0.

Elanga was sold by United in 2023 for £15m and has a better record than winger at the club in the last two seasons[/caption]

The former Red Devils star, sold in 2023 for £15million, dribbled with the ball from well inside his own half after getting on to the end of a header away at a corner by Ryan Yates.

Elanga brushed off a tackle from Alejandro Garnacho with Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu unable to get the ball off him before he shot the ball into the bottom right corner past Andre Onana.

He has been in stunning form for Nuno Espirito Santo‘s Forest this season, scoring six goals and adding nine assists in all 34 appearances.

Speaking after the match at the City Ground, Amorim was asked whether the club had made a mistake in selling the winger.

However, the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss dismissed those claims and insisted he had his chance to prove himself at United before he was sold, although he did admit there is often not enough time to succeed at the Old Trafford club.

Amorim said: “We are talking about a lot of front players for Manchester United that are doing right but they had the chance here.

“At Manchester United you don’t have the time. I will not have the time. We have to get it right fast.

Elanga is one of a number of former United stars who have left the club before going on to thrive elsewhere, with Scott McTominay and loanees Antony and Marcus Rashford examples coming from this season.

Amorim added: “You are not talking about players that didn’t play for Manchester United. They were here playing for Manchester United.

“In here the pressure is too big sometimes and sometimes you don’t get time and you should have time for these kids to develop.

“But for that you need a strong base to support all these kids and if you don’t have strong base we are not going to help our kids.

“They had their chances and sometimes football is like that and the pressure of playing for Manchester United is really big.”

Elanga’s goal against his former club means he now has 28 Premier League goal contributions in his Forest career, better than any Man Utd winger over the last two seasons.

The Swede had originally joined United at the age of 12 before going on to make his debut aged 19 in 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He became a more regular player under interim boss Ralf Rangnick in 2022, but ultimately became frustrated by the lack of opportunities then presented to him under Erik ten Hag.

On leaving the club, he told The Times in 2024: “It was difficult [to leave] but it was needed because I wanted to play and I didn’t want to spend another season just playing 10 minutes or not playing for 10 games,’ he explained.

Anthony Elanga's 2024-25 Nottingham Forest stats: games, chances created, goals, assists, shots on target, passes, and fouls.

“I wanted a fresh start but I knew it wouldn’t be easy leaving a club that I had been at for nine years.

“Sometimes football is like that, it might not always work somewhere.

“I had seen what he (Erik ten Hag) did at Ajax (with young players) so I was looking forward to it but I just didn’t get the opportunities.”

Elanga’s winner strengthened his club’s position in terms of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Assuming the Premier League is handed a fifth Champions League spot due to good performances from teams in Europe this season, Forest currently have a 10-point advantage to falling out of the qualifying spots this season with eight games to go.

Meanwhile, Man Utd remain on the hunt for back-to-back league wins this season.

They had more of the ball and had more than 20 shots at goal but struggled to create clear-cut chances other than a goal-line clearance at the end of the game.

Forest travel to Aston Villa in their next league game, while United host Manchester City in the Manchester Derby.

Man Utd player ratings vs Nottingham Forest

MANCHESTER UNITED’S woes continue after another disappointing loss to Nottingham Forest.

Forest picked up a 1-0 victory at the City Ground thanks to ex-United ace Anthony Elanga’s winner after just five minutes.

United remain 13th in the Premier League table and look set for their worst ever Premier League finish.

That is at least what their performance at Forest showed, as Ruben Amorim’s men don’t show signs of really understanding the Portuguese tactician’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.

But who stood out for a poor United’s side? And who was the biggest disappointment?

Check out Kostas Lianos’ players ratings below and find out…

Andre Onana – 5

Can’t blame him for Nottingham Forest’s winner as Anthony Elanga’s shot was too good. Made a stunning save to deny Ryan Yates’ header without knowing the Forest ace was offside.

Leny Yoro – 5

Should have been more aware before Elanga’s goal that came straight after a Man Utd corner-kick in which he had moved forward.

One could argue Yoro made up for it when he stopped a fine run by Elanga in the second half with an amazing and well-timed challenge to save United from a second.

Matthijs de Ligt – 4

The centre-back was also nowhere to be seen before Elanga’s goal. No other major errors but should have done better on the rebound after Diogo Dalot’s header hit the crossbar.

Noussair Mazraoui – 4

Completely hopeless during Elanga’s run that led to the goal and struggled in his defensive duties, especially in the first half. Not sure if the full-back fits in a defensive trio as part of Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation…

Diogo Dalot – 6

A strong performance down the right wing with some fine runs and good crosses. Registered United’s best chance in the first half when his header rattled Forest’s crossbar.

Casemiro – 4

At fault for Elanga’s goal as there was absolutely no midfield presence during Forest’s counter.

Loads of inaccurate passes and got booked for a reckless challenge on Yates before complaining in a very unjust way. Registered three shots but didn’t cause concern for Matz Sels.

Manuel Ugarte – 4

Cut a rather anonymous figure, among the guilty parties for Elanga’s goal as Man Utd’s midfield was caught sleeping. Rightly substituted at half-time.

Patrick Dorgu – 5

A fine display during the first half as he cut a strong presence down the left flank, even though he was completely outrun by Elanga before the goal.

But the versatile full-back was the complete opposite in the second half with a series of errors against a stunning Neco Williams.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Registered the game’s first shot on target with a powerful effort that required a lunge from Sels, and that was basically United’s best shot throughout the entire match.

Fernandes produced some fine long balls and upgraded Man Utd’s midfield after Ugarte and Casemiro’s exits.

Alejandro Garnacho – 2

Very disappointing performance from the winger. Completely hopeless before Elanga’s goal with a desperate tackle and was lucky to avoid a booking for a ridiculous challenge on Yates while the Argentina international was on the attack.

A game riddled with heavy touches, failed dribbles, wrong passes, blocked shots and a silly yellow card as he kicked the ball away in frustration. Had a good shot on 69 minutes as a saving grace.

Joshua Zirkzee – 3

Was supposed to be a striker but was often seen playing too deep and didn’t register a chance in front of Forest’s goal. Didn’t inspire any danger even after Rasmus Hojlund came on to help him up front.

SUBS

Rasmus Hojlund – 5

Was much better than a woeful Zirkzee up front for Man Utd. But didn’t cause any significant danger and never looked like a goalscoring threat. Harry Maguire looked far more lethal as a false nine after he entered the pitch with a lot more presence inside the box.

Christian Eriksen – 4

Didn’t really elevate United’s midfield after Ugarte and Casemiro’s exit. The sort of performance that makes one wonder about his Old Trafford future…

Harry Maguire – 5

Only played nine minutes as a false nine and was by far Man Utd’s best forward. Brought on as a desperation move that almost paid off with the best chance of the match as his last-gasp effort was cleared by Murillo just off the line.

Mason Mount – N/A

Danny Jones’ wife Georgia supported by sister as she returns to podcast for first time since McFly star’s ‘drunken kiss’

DANNY Jones’ wife Georgia has been supported by her sister while making a return to her podcast for the first time since her husband’s ‘drunken kiss’ with Maura Higgins.

The former Miss England, 38, was spotted leaving a London recording studio with her older sister after recording for her highly anticipated podcast in the wake of her husband’s kiss with the Love Island beauty.

Georgia, who moved out of the home she shares with Danny, was seen linking arms with her sister Lauren Jackson, who works as a registrar doctor.

The pair were seen as they departed a recording studio in London after recording for Georgia’s Mum’s The Word! podcast.

Georgia has been absent from her podcast since husband Danny was caught on camera sharing a kiss with his I’m A Celeb co-star Maura at a BRIT Awards after party in March.

Seemingly getting back into work mode, Georgia could be seen wearing some indigo blue jeans, a pair of black shoes, a white t-shirt and a green bomber jacket as she left the studio.

Meanwhile, her sister was seen rocking a green floral dress, some trainers and a beige-coloured coat.

On Tuesday, Georgia revealed on Instagram that she was back recording her podcast.

Georgia famously hosts podcast Mum’s The Word! with pal Kelsey Parker, though has not taken part in it since the news broke of her husband’s drunken kiss.

Georgia’s last appearance on the podcast was March 3, which was released before the news of her husband’s kiss with Maura hit headlines.

The following week, Georgia did not appear in the March 10 episode of Mum’s The Word! With Georgia Jones & Kelsey Parker, with Kelsey hosting solo.

Instead of being joined by Georgia, Kelsey was joined by former Love Island star Olivia Bowen, who discussed the heartbreaking loss of one of her unborn twins.

At the start of the episode, Kelsey failed to touch on Georgia’s absence when she says: “Welcome back to Mum’s The Word. I’m your host Kelsey Parker and today I am joined by the amazing Olivia Bowen.”

And not only was Georgia absent from her podcast, but she swerved an in-person event last month as well.

She had been due to participate in a Q&A with her pal Kelsey, who she co-hosts her podcast with.

But Georgia was nowhere to be seen during the event at The Baby Show in London, despite Kelsey attending and answering questions from fans.

Days before she was due to speak at the event, a source told MailOnline: “Sitting down for a Q&A in front of a live audience is not what Georgia needs right now.

“She is mortified at how this has all played out and can’t help but feel humiliated.”

But now, Georgia seems to be getting back to work and recently announced she will be heading to The Big Feastival in the Cotswolds in August with her podcast.

This comes after Georgia’s pals said she needed space before deciding her next steps with Danny after his kiss with Love Island star Maura.

Georgia went to stay with a friend after the news broke of Danny’s kiss.

A pal told The Sun: “The break has done Georgia a world of good.

“Being out of the house and with her friend Rose Mahon was what she needed to clear her head.

“Her relationship with Danny was pushed to breaking point and they are still trying to work out what they want.

“Danny has made it clear he will do anything to make it work.

He loves Georgia and wants their marriage to get back on track.”

Former tennis star Camila Giorgi who quit to become lingerie model before mysteriously disappearing resumes old career

FORMER tennis star Camila Giorgi is resuming her modelling career after moving to Argentina.

The 33-year-old Italian, who reached the 2018 Wimbledon quarter-final, retired from the sport last year without initially telling fans.

During her playing days, Giorgi balanced her time on the court with modelling lingerie.

But soon after hanging up her racquet, the ex-player seemingly disappeared amid claims she owed up to six months rent at a villa near Florence.

It was even alleged that she was trying to evade tax authorities, which she denied.

Giorgi is now based in Argentina and shocked fans in February by appearing as a reporter at an ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires.

She was seen courtside interviewing players and providing analysis in the studio.

But despite a brief return to tennis, Giorgi is now back to “resume her modelling career”, according to Marca.

Since her cameo on TV, the former world No26 has returned to stunning in luxury photoshoots.

She recently stripped down to a bikini for PQ Swim and stunned in a figure-hugging black dress for newspaper La Nation.

Meanwhile, Giorgi has also teased a new venture involving sport.

She uploaded a video on Instagram of herself working out alongside the caption: “A sneak peek of what I’ll be showing soon: More sports with me. My lifelong passion.”

Girl, 11, who ‘slipped & fell in Thames while playing with pals’ is pictured as frantic search enters 3rd day

A SCHOOLGIRL who went missing after she “slipped and fell” into the River Thames has been pictured for the first time.

Kaliyah Coa, 11, who had been playing during a school inset day, entered the water near Barge House Causeway in east London.

Emergency services were called at 1.23pm on Monday with London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, the RNLI and the Coastguard searching for the missing schoolgirl.

The force said: “A recovery mission is now under way to find Kaliyah along the Thames, with the Met leading an extensive examination of the area.”

It said Kaliyah’s family have “asked for privacy at this distressing time”.

The child had been playing near the water with a young boy and girl, residents said.

A relative told The Sun: “It was her birthday last week. She had only just turned 11.

“She was a beautiful bubbly girl. A very happy girl and lovely girl.”

Shaleen Rajaendram, 59, who lives on Barge House Road which leads onto the causeway, said: “I heard upstairs a guy was screaming ‘wait there, wait, the police is coming’.”

The man was standing on a balcony in a flat block overlooking the river and later told Ms Rajaendram he had been alerted by the children “shouting, screaming”, she said.

Ms Rajaendram continued: “Then I saw suddenly two kids were coming out to the top of the bridge, I said ‘what happened?’

“Then they said ‘one of my friends was playing in the water, one of my friends has gone into water and she’s gone underneath and we can’t find her’.”

The girl returned home while the boy told Ms Rajaendram where the incident took place.

Ms Rajaendram then called her neighbour, Kerry Benadjaoud, 62, who took a life ring down to the water but could not see the girl.

A man said he had called the police, Ms Benadjaoud said, adding: “But he said at the time he could see her (the girl’s) hands going down.

“So, by the time I got down there with the ring I couldn’t find her.”

The lifelong area resident said she discovered shoes, a sock, a coat and a phone near the river, and handed the items to the police.

“Apparently she was paddling, so her socks and shoes were off, her coat, then she must have slipped and gone down”, she added.

Ms Benadjaoud said the boy who had been with the girl was around eight or nine years old.

She said: “The little boy turned around and said ‘I tried to hold her hand but it slipped’.

“I said to the little boy’s parents, obviously he needs to see someone because it’s going to affect him later”.

Barge House Causeway is a concrete slope that goes directly into the River Thames and is used to transport boats, and residents pointed out that it appeared to be covered in moss and is slippery.

The girl’s next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by officers.

LAS was called at a similar time to police after receiving a report of a person in the water at Lowestoft Mews, close to the airport.

“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, an incident response officer and members of our hazardous area response team,” a spokesperson said.

“Our crews assisted our emergency services partners at the scene but were later stood down.”

LFB deputy assistant commissioner Joseph Kenny said: “Firefighters responded to reports of a person in the River Thames near Lowestoft Mews, Newham.

“Crews from East Ham, Barking, Ilford and Bexley fire stations were sent to the scene alongside crews from the HM Coastguard, RNLI, London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police Service.

“The brigade also deployed its drone team and fire boat as part of its response, with crews carrying out a systematic search of the area.

“The brigade was first called about the incident at 13:23. Search operations for firefighters were concluded at 15:49 when responsibility for the incident was left with the police.”

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: “Tower RNLI was requested to launch this afternoon (March 31) to an incident near Woolwich.

“The lifeboat was later stood down.”
