Five rarest 50p coins with exact details that are worth up to £726 – do you have one?

DO you have a rare 50p worth up to £726? We explain how to spot one.

A coin is usually classed as rare if a limited amount of the piece was put into circulation, meaning there are less available for people to get hold of.

Collage of rare 50 pence coins with their values.
We round up some of the most valuable coins

Sometimes, the coin will have an unusual marking, and other times it can feature a familiar character or cartoon on it, which drives up demand from collectors.

Based off of past sales, if you sold all of these five coins, you could fetch a total of £726

LONDON OLYMPIC 2012 FOOTBALL OFFSIDE RULE – up to £24

To celebrate the 2012 London Olympic Games, a unique set of 50p coins was issued by The Royal Mint.

This coin is also known as the Offside Rule 50p and is one of twenty-nine commemorative 2012 Olympic 50ps issued by The Royal Mint.

The design was created by Neil Wolfson, a sports journalist and features a diagram to show how the Offside Rule works.

Around 1.2 million of the Olympic Football 50p’s were put into circulation, so you might have one lying around your house.

If you do you could also fetch a high price for the coin.

That’s because one seller managed to flog the coin for £24 on February 14 after 14 bids.

King Charles 2023 50p Atlantic Salmon Royal Mint – up to £85

This 50p piece started entering general circulation at the end of 2023 as part of a new series of coins marking the ascension of King Charles to the throne.

The coin features a portrait of King Charles III on the front, while the back of the coin depicts an Atlantic salmon leaping from the waves.

It is considered to be on one of the rarest coins in circulation, and has sold for well over £70 in the past.

If you think you have one lying around it may be worth holding on tight to it.

That’s because one seller managed to flog their 50p for £85 on February 17 after 15 bids.

KEW GARDENS 50P – £149.09

The commemorative Kew Gardens coin, which was minted in 2009, was created to mark 250 years since the botanical gardens opened in 1759.

Only 210,000 of these coins were created by the Royal Mint, making it one of the rarest pieces out there.

The front of the coin has an image of the late Queen Elizabeth II, with the engraver’s initials, Ian Rank-Broadley, below.

What makes it special is the reverse, which features a leafy vine wrapped around a Chinese pagoda.

It also has the date of the year it was made to commemorate the anniversary.

In the past, these coins have sold for up to £700 on eBay.

Recently, the coin has not sold for as much, but if you have one lying around, it can still fetch a hefty sum.

One recently sold for £142.09 after 24 bids on March 3.

Blue Peter 50p – £223

This Blue Peter 50p coin was released in 2009 ahead of the London Olympic games in 2012.

It features a cartoon of a high jumper on the back, with the design etched by a nine-year-old girl.

The image was created by schoolgirl Florence Jackson for a competition run by popular kids TV show Blue Peter.

It features a high jumper bending backwards over a pole, with a surprised look on its face.

Florence’s drawing was selected out of 17,000 entries, and she became the youngest person to ever design a coin.

Over 2.2 million of the Blue Peter 50p coins were issued, with most minted in 2011.

The coin recently sold for £223 after 13 bids on March 2.

London 2012 Olympic Aquatics 50p – £245

The London 2012 Olympic Aquatics 50p coin is considered rare because a small number of them were made with a design flaw where the lines representing water go over the swimmers face.

With so few of the original design out there, it’s meant the coin’s value has been pushed up significantly.

We found one of these error coins sold for £245 in February this year, although one sold for £30 just a week earlier.

It is also important to remember that coins are only worth how much someone is willing to pay for them.

So why it might sell for a greater sum on month, the next month buyer demand may have dwindled.

How to spot rare coins and banknotes

Rare coins and notes hiding down the back of your sofa could sell for hundreds of pounds.

If you are lucky enough to find a rare £10 note you might be able to sell it for multiple times its face value.

You can spot rare notes by keeping an eye out for the serial numbers.

These numbers can be found on the side with the Monarch’s face, just under the value £10 in the corner of the note.

Also if you have a serial number on your note that is quite quirky you could cash in thousands.

For example, one seller bagged £3,600 after spotting a specific serial number relating to the year Jane Austen was born on one of their notes.

You can check if your notes are worth anything on eBay, just tick “completed and sold items” and filter by the highest value.

It will give you an idea of what people are willing to pay for some notes.

But do bear in mind that yours is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

This is also the case for coins, you can determine how rare your coin is by looking a the latest scarcity index.

The next step is to take a look at what has been recently sold on eBay.

Experts from Change Checker recommend looking at “sold listings” to be sure that the coin has sold for the specified amount rather than just been listed.

People can list things for any price they like, but it doesn’t mean it will sell for that amount.

We explain further how you can find out if you have a rare coin worth thousands sitting around the house.

Georgina also posed next to Argentine performer Tini Stoessel and American singer Chappell Roan.

Model Georgina was recently a guest at the Saudi Arabian Formula E.

She lives in Riyadh with Al-Nassr star Ronaldo and his five children.

And Ronaldo last year fuelled secret marriage rumours after referring to Georgina as his “wife”.

The ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star was honoured twice during the glittering Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai in December.

During his acceptance speech, Ronaldo dedicated the gong to Georgina – who stunned with her eye-catching outfit – and his son Cristiano Jr.

Ronaldo said: “It’s a big pleasure to win this trophy. My oldest son is here, my wife [Georgina] is here.”

Inside Cristiano Ronaldo's incredible life

AS arguably the greatest player of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo lives a life befitting such a superstar.

Ron loves a fast motor almost as much as scoring goals with his vast car collection including one costing £9MILLION.

Upon moving to Saudi – Ronaldo moved into a luxury skyscraper hotel before swapping it for an Arabian mansion.

As a globetrotter, Ronaldo likes to travel in style like onboard this luxury private jet.

Behind every great man is a great woman, and Ronaldo has one in partner Georgina Rodriguez.

Georgina opened up on the moment they first met when she was working as a shop girl, saying it was “love at first sight”.

Before meeting Georgina, Ronaldo dated some of the world’s hottest women including Kim Kardashian and Irina Shayk.

Now it’s all about the family, with Ronaldo’s offspring now capable of making up a five-a-side team.

Ronaldo’s very well paid on the pitch, but he makes a ton of money off it too with endorsement deals ranging from KFC to his own range of underpants.

He’s also a prolific investor and owns a string of hotels.

He’s currently building a holiday resort in the Red Sea which has been dubbed “a new paradise”.

Ronaldo gives back too – which is one of the reasons he doesn’t have any tattoos.

He’s highly dedicated, as a look inside his health and fitness regime shows.

That dedication saw him transform from a weedy teen to hulking Adonis.

Rodriguez and Ronaldo have been together since 2016 and have two children together – Alana Martina, 7, and Bella, 2.

She is also a doting stepmother to his other three kids – twins Eva and Mateo, 7, and Cristiano Jr, 14.

The loved-up pair have never publicly declared they are married, with Ronaldo’s slip of the tongue sending the rumour mill into overdrive.

Ronaldo turned 40 in February and has set his sights on making Portugal’s 2026 World Cup side.

Her price had fluctuated massively over the past few days as punters tried to guess which way the legendary trainer would go.

But the decision was finally made on Sunday morning as the declarations for the first day at Cheltenham were made.

And Paul Townend will ride Lossiemouth in the Mares’ Hurdle, where she will aim to defend the race she won 12 months ago.

Mullins also confirmed Gala Marceau and Jade De Grugy for the Mares’ Hurdle, with Brian Hayes and Danny Mullins riding them respectively.

Kargese was not declared for the Mares’ Hurdle, which indicates she is likely to go for the County Hurdle on Friday.

We’re locked in vicious 6-year war with ‘abusive’ neighbour over monster tree the size of TWO double decker buses

A COUPLE have been locked in a six-year battle with their neighbour over a monster tree, nicknamed King Conifer.

The 30-foot cypress – the height of two stacked double-decker buses – blots out the sun for grandad Keith Smith and wife Julie as it looms over their home in Edinburgh, Scotland.

But David and Niena Hunter’s green Goliath is still growing – and has been argued over from the town hall to the highest court in the land.

Meanwhile, police have been called out to referee the row between the ex-pals as it spiralled into allegations of vile abuse and fisticuffs.

An end to the aggro may finally be in sight after councillors voted to give the giant conifer the chop.

But the axe may take months to fall yet – meaning another ruined summer for the Smiths.

Retired community worker Keith, 71, told The Sun: “The whole thing is so absurd and ridiculous.

“All we want is daylight into our house and garden so we can enjoy it as we grow older – and for the family to come round for barbecues.

“But it’s put a strain on our health and well-being. I find myself being quite short-tempered about things these days, which Julie has noticed too.

“It looms over everything that we do. All we want is to live a normal life.”

Keith and ex-social worker Julie, 67, have lived in the same house in a well-heeled suburb of Scotland’s capital for more than 40 years.

Over the back fence are the Hunters who, when they moved in 25 years ago, planted tiny conifers that shot up in height as time went by.

When the trees became a hedge that began bursting up and over the boundary, the Smiths asked the Hunters to give it a trim.

In 2019, they applied for a High Hedge Notice from the local council to force their neighbours’ hand.

The Smiths’ bid was knocked back – but they appealed to the Scottish Government and won their case in 2021.

As the stakes built, the Hunters tried to challenge the decision in Scotland’s supreme civil court, the Court of Session.

However, their action was thrown out by judge Lord Arthurson in 2022.

The Hunters eventually obeyed the order in 2023 and lowered the row of conifers to 2.6 metres (8.5 feet) in height, which Keith checks on with his own homemade measuring stick.

But they left the giant tree still standing as they claimed it wasn’t part of the hedge.

Officials wrongly signed off on it, but last month an Edinburgh City Council planning committee decided the monster must be cut down to size too.

While all the bureaucracy played out, the couples’ relationship disintegrated.

ALLEGED ALTERCATION

Mr Hunter has been charged with threatening or abusive behaviour towards a child visiting the Smiths.

Both sides have claimed they feel intimidated by the other.

Keith said: “We have to walk past the neighbours’ house every day and we do it with a degree of trepidation.

“The police recommended we go for mediation, but that was turned down by the neighbours.

“We’d just like to see a hedge cut to the proper size and for us to be able to sit in our garden and have fun without someone making remarks over the fence.”

The Hunters – businessman David, 62, and 58-year-old Niena – were unavailable for comment.

But they have previously told Edinburgh Live: “We have complied with the High Hedge Notice and this was signed off by the council in April 2023.

“We are wanting to enjoy a peaceful retirement but since April 2023 we have been harassed and intimidated by Mr and Mrs Smith. This has been reported to the relevant authorities.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A 61-year-old man has been charged in connection with threatening or abusive behaviour towards a child in the Priestfield Gardens area of Edinburgh on 30 April, 2024.

“A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman said: “We are in the process of preparing the revised High Hedge Notice as per the committee’s decision.

“Once the notice is issued, the trimming of the tree will be dependent on whether the notice is appealed and then on the outcome of any appeal.”

I get all of my clothes out of the bin, it might sound gross but it’s saved me almost £40k & I’ve quit my job

A WOMAN has saved £40k in two years by getting all her clothes and home goods from the bin.

Melanie Diaz, 22, started dumpster diving – salvaging from large commercial and residential trash cans for discarded items – after watching a video of someone doing it on TikTok.

In her first dive, she found books, toys, and calendars and decided to keep at it.

Over two years, Melanie has found clothes, home decorations, Christmas decorations, and pet food in dumpsters.

She says she’s saved $50k (£38,728) over 24 months doing her new hobby and she’s not had to spend a single penny on clothes or home items since she started.

The large savings allowed Melanie to quit her full-time job in photographer to dumpster dive full-time.

Melanie, a content creator, from Tampa, Florida said: “I don’t need to spend money on clothes or home decorations.

“I haven’t spent money on those items in two years.

“Since I started dumpster diving, I have saved a lot of money.

“I reckon I have saved $50k minimum over the last two years.

“I have used the money to put towards traveling around the world.”

Melanie started dumpster diving in January 2023 after watching a video of someone doing it on TikTok.

She said she wanted to try it out to see if it worked for her.

“When I went for the first time I found a bunch of stuff,” Melanie said.

“I found books, toys, and calendars.

“I was like ‘wow, this is real’ and I decided I was going to start doing it full time.”

From that moment, Melanie started dumpster diving full-time – finding home decorations, clothes, and even dog food.

Melanie said: “I find a lot of decorations, I go to pet stores, and I find a bunch of dog and cat food.

“I have found a lot of clothes over the years and home decorations that I have used in my house.

“The best thing I have found is around Christmas.

“I save most of my money around Christmas, I find decorations for the house, presents, and even Christmas trees.”

Melanie will find most of her clothes and home items in dumpsters for TJ Maxx, Homesense, and HomeGoods.

She said the best store she has collected from is Homesense as most items will still have tags on.

Melanie said: “Homesense has been the best store to go to because everything I have found still has tags on – all the items are brand new.

“The great thing about dumpster diving is I haven’t had to buy any new clothes or decorations in two years.

“Most things I find should not be in the dumpster.”

Is dumpster diving legal in the UK?

Thinking of trying your luck rummaging through bins? Here’s what you need to know

Dumpster diving is not illegal in the UK as any rubbish isn’t considered private property.

You are able to dumpster dive if the bins are out in the open and on public land while not being locked.

However, you may be asked to move along.

Despite saving a huge amount of money on clothes and home items, Melanie said she would donate most of her items to charity.

“I don’t sell the items I find, I will donate the stuff I don’t want to keep,” Melanie said.

“I’m originally from Colombia, so I will send items back home where people can make use of them.”

Melanie loves dumpster diving so much, she quit her full-time job in photography to dumpster dive every day.

She will do it seven days a week for four and five hours every day.

Melanie said: “I think dumpster diving is something I will always do.

“I really love dumpster diving, you never know what you are going to find – it is always a surprise.

“I always wanted to do something where I am my own boss.

“Working in social media and dumpster diving full time has allowed me to do that.”
