A year on from Cheltenham hell Nico de Boinville tells me why he’s back with an almighty spring in his step

IT was after Jingko Blue pulled up at Cheltenham last year that a dejected Nico do Boinville trudged back towards the weighing room.

And what made it worse? I was waiting for him.

It’s a section viewers enjoy. But for De Boinville there was nothing to relish at all.

Jingko Blue’s flop came on the back of an already torrid week for his trainer Nicky Henderson, who had withdrawn most of his big players from the meeting. In horse racing terms it was a disaster.

“I feel bad asking but…” I said to De Boinville.

To which he replied: “You should feel bad asking. Same story, different day”.

The jockey meant it in the nicest possible way. And his answer perfectly summed up his stable’s nightmare.

“At that point of the Festival I was pretty down in the dumps and miserable,” De Boinville recalls.

“The writing was on the wall from the first race – the Supreme – I would say. I was on Jeriko du Reponet and he pulled up. It had all started to go wrong before that, though, as Constitution Hill’s bad gallop at Kempton came prior to the meeting. He was already out. Things just weren’t flowing.”

Constitution Hill is, of course, jump racing’s superstar.

When he romped clear in the 2022 Supreme he looked like a horse from another planet. He did the same in the 2023 Champion Hurdle.

Then he was forced to miss Cheltenham last year. Some started to question his brilliance.

Some mocked those who think he might just be the best hurdler of all time.

On Tuesday he has the chance to remind us of a unique talent.

“It certainly grated with me through the week,” De Boinville continues.

“But you learn very quickly in this game that it’s all very transient (not a word all jockeys would come out with!), and that you will bounce back. You can only control the controllables. You just have to move on. It also makes you appreciate when you do have winners.”

It wasn’t just a personal frustration De Boinville felt.

More than any other major stable jockey in the UK, the man who has enjoyed huge successes on jumps heroes like Sprinter Sacre, Altior, Shishkin and Constitution Hill, as well as a Gold Cup victory on Coneygree, is an ‘all in’ dedicated rider attached to Henderson’s Seven Barrows stable.

“A bad week doesn’t just affect me, it affects the whole yard,” says de Boinville.

“That includes pool money which goes to the lads when we do well and of course our owners. It was a tough week, but then you try and salvage things and I think we did that at the end of last season when we went to Aintree and got things together again.”

A year on, and there is an almighty spring in De Boinville and Henderson’s step.

Indeed, it will be a major shock this week if I’m not talking to the man I know as Nicolai Chastel de Boinville after more than one big-race success.

“From what I’ve seen the horses have been running well on the track this season,” says De Boinville.

“They seem in good order, look great in their coats and I think we are where we want to be right now.”

On paper De Boinville has a harem of top class Grade 1 mounts.

Constitution Hill heads the cast in Tuesday’s Unibet Champion Hurdle, while he also has hotpot Jonbon in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Then there is the potential of Lulamba in the JCB Triumph Hurdle, Jango Baie in the My Pension Expert Arkle, supplemented Joyeuse in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle and Lucky Place in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle.

That’s not to mention a host of handicap possibles including the aforementioned Jeriko du Reponet and Mister Coffey in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase.

Following all sorts of issues, Constitution Hill is back after victories at Kempton and Cheltenham this term. Some think he might be better than ever.

De Boinville says: “It’s another year so you would hope he will be stronger. He’s in his prime and we are coming into this race with our eyes open and looking forward to it.

“It certainly all felt there when he won at Cheltenham last time and in his work we’ve been happy with him.

“He made a mistake at the last in the International Hurdle but that can happen in any race. I just put it to the back of my head.

“It doesn’t matter what happens in the race. He’s so straightforward. I imagine there is going to be a really strong pace – but as I have said it doesn’t matter. They can go slow or they can go quick he’s able to travel at whatever gallop.

“He’s exciting to ride and I have never jumped a hurdle better than I have done on Constitution Hill. He’s the best hurdler I have ever been on and if he comes up with the form he was in when taking the Supreme or when he won the Champion in 2023 it would take a true champion to beat him.”

Jonbon was the horse Constitution Hill stuffed in his Supreme romp, but he’s improved over fences and won 17 of his 20 races including this season’s Tingle Creek and Clarence House. Both are Grade 1s.

His three defeats, however, have come at Cheltenham.

“Jonbon is very like Constitution Hill in that he’s a very easy horse to ride,” De Boinville says.

“You can do what you like on him. I think that was proven at Aintree last year over two and a half miles where she showed he stays well. But he’s got the speed to travel well at two miles.

He’s so consistent and I’ve always thought if you are going to be consistent you can’t be winning races by long distances which he never does.

“It’s great that the field has a bit of strength in depth and Solness with be a good target to aim at although it really doesn’t matter as I can lead. It wouldn’t bother me if they dropped Solness in, which they won’t, but it makes no difference. I have no worries about him at Cheltenham.”

Henderson is set to run two exciting horses in the Grade 1 JCB Triumph, namely Lulamba and Palladium, who cost nearly £1.2million!

De Boinville said: “Lulamba felt good at Ascot. I’m very happy with him. I loved how he went to the last hurdle and pricked his ears and then scooted on clear. From what I had seen at home his Ascot win wasn’t any surprise at all. I thought he was a good horse and he is.

“I might not be on him but I certainly wouldn’t dismiss Palladium. He won at Huntingdon and the form was franked the other day by a horse he beat. I thought it was a good start. He’s schooled a lot and was bought to come and run in this race so fingers crossed he goes well.”

Lucky Place is improving all the time with wins at Ascot and Cheltenham.

“He’s a terrier of a horse and everyone at home loves him,” De Boinville says.

“This is his first time at three miles and we decided after he won at Cheltenham last time that we didn’t need to be trying him over the trip beforehand.

“He was all set to go novice chasing this year, and he has the size and scope to do that. But when he won at Ascot we changed the plans. He’s a loveable horse and I’m confident on his stamina.”

It’s a week to right the wrongs of 2024. And there is no doubt De Boinville has the ammunition to do just that.

Virgin Media customers warned of huge channel shake-up happening on all TV boxes today following recent closure

A NUMBER of channels have been moved on Virgin Media following the recent closure of a popular household name.

Eurosport ceased broadcasting in the UK last month, marking the end of 35 years on-air.

A TNT Sports branded microphone.
Getty
TNT Sports channels have taken the gaps left by Eurosport’s departure[/caption]

Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2’s content has merged with TNT Sports, though some free programming will continue on Quest.

Given the gap in the TV guide as a result, Virgin Media has reshuffled some channel numbers.

So to avoid confusion before the next big match or sporting event, you might want to familiarise yourself with the changes.

TNT Sports has taken up the slots previously filled by Eurosport, meanwhile some of the other TNT Sports channels have been moved up.

Sky has already shuffled the channels around on its devices.

On Virgin Media, TNT Sports 1 can now be found on channel 521.

Eurosport 2’s old home, channel 522, now belongs to TNT Sports 2.

And channel 523 – previously filled by Eurosport UHD – is now where you’ll find TNT Sports 3.

TNT Sports 4 fills the gap at channel 524 and finally TNT Sports Ultimate 4K UHD takes the 525 spot.

Fortunately, if you forget Virgin Media will show a warning on the old channel slots from 527 to 531.

The move comes days after the firm introduced two new channels to boxes at no extra cost.

For sports fans, this includes Red Bull TV where you can watch motorsport, biking, snowboarding, and more.

See the full list of Virgin Media channel changes below:

  • TNT Sports 1 – channel 521
  • TNT Sports 2 – channel 522
  • TNT Sports 3 – channel 523
  • TNT Sports 4 – channel 524
  • TNT Sports Ultimate 4K UHD – channel 525

This is just the start - more changes ahead

Analysis by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun

Broadcasting is going through an almighty shift at the moment with the push toward streaming at a key point.

Eurosport and TNT Sports owner Warner Bros Discovery is making some big changes next year.

And it’s likely Discovery+ will disappear as a result.

The streaming service has closed in several countries already to make way for a replacement, Max, bringing HBO and Discovery content under one roof.

The UK is one of the few big markets where Max hasn’t launched yet because of existing agreements with Sky, allowing Sky Atlantic to air big HBO-made hits like Game of Thrones and The White Lotus.

But the pair recently announced a new deal that will pave the way for Max’s launch in the UK early 2026 as a standalone app, while Sky customers will get access at no extra cost.

So expect even bigger changes in the TV and streaming world next year.

Katie Price accused of photoshop fail as fans are distracted by detail in sweet pic with Harvey

KATIE Price has been called out by fans who have accused her of photoshopping her latest pictures with son Harvey.

The mum-of-five posted a sweet picture alongside son Harvey, sharing a hug with him in their kitchen with her arms around his neck.

Katie’s latest picture had a lot of people talking[/caption]

Doting mum Katie is seen staring lovingly at her 22-year-old boy, who has a series of disabilities including Prader-Willi Syndrome and autism, as he towers over her 6ft 2in and looks just as lovingly back at her.

She captioned the pic: “Fun weekend in the sun with Harvey 💚💚💚

But fans were quick to notice that Katie may have tweaked the photo a bit too much to clear and smooth out her skin and cheek bone, noticing that her eyebrow had been lengthened and her earlobe had disappeared, creating a dragging ear hole down the side of her face.

“What’s happened to her ear???” questioned one fan.

Another went a step further and wrote: “Is no one going to point out that this is clearly AI?”

A third believed it was done deliberately, and wrote: “Her face is obviously edited if you zoom it in, it’s done to create comments and controversy because she’s a very clever business woman and you all just play into it, it’s comical really.”

“All that work done and then editing your face,” said a fourth.

The new comments come after Katie has shared her determination to turn her life around after a string of financial issues leaving her in debt and declared bankrupt twice.

Over the past year, Katie has downsized her house, sold her notorious pink Range Rover, and is heading out on a sure-to-be scandalous tour alongside Kerry Katona.

She’s also been open about her struggles with fertility, revealing that she had an unexpected miscarriage after falling pregnant with boyfriend JJ Slater’s baby.

Katie had already been warned that she has a less than 1% chance of conceiving a child, but is persevering with a new round of IVF after becoming desperate for a sixth baby.

In February, she also revealed that she is struggling with son Harvey after his Last month the mum-of-five revealed he was deemed “too difficult” by staff at the facility and removed from it.

Harvey, whose has learning disabilities including autism, has difficulties processing his feelings, which at times can cause him to lash out violently.

In the past, this has included him breaking the window of Katie’s car after getting him frustrated with the hiccups, and punching holes in walls.

She moved him into a residential care facility in the hope it would give him some level of independence into adulthood, while also having professionals on hand to give him the help he needs.

She’s since found him a new place to stay, and he moves in next month.

I’m an interiors expert, posh people love a £20 tile hack that will instantly elevate your kitchen

HAVING the kitchen of your dreams is on most people’s dream home bucket list.

But getting this room done up often comes with an eye-watering price-tag.

Kitchen with white subway tile backsplash, farmhouse sink, and wooden shelving.
Tiles can instantly update your kitchen
Cheerful millennial women dressed in white T-shirts stand in an empty apartment, ready to paint the walls
The good news is you can do it yourself

However, interiors experts reckon you don’t have to splash out to get the perfect look.

Tiling pros from Porcelain Superstore say a simple and affordable splashback trick can transform your kitchen into a designer dream.

And the DIY gurus say the tiling upgrade can instantly make your space look more high-end, costing as little as £20.

Abbas Youssefi, from Porcelain Superstore, said: “A tiled splashback is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to give your kitchen a premium feel.

Even upgrading a small area – like behind the hob or sink – can make a huge impact.”

And posh people love them, according to the experts.

From Soho Farmhouse-style rustic kitchens to sleek, high-end city apartments, a beautifully tiled splashback instantly elevates a space, making it look more expensive than it really is, says Abbas

He explained: “You can buy beautiful ceramic or metro-style tiles for around £20 per square metre.

A small, tiled splashback in a standout colour or pattern creates a focal point that looks far more high-end than a plain painted wall.”

And the best part? You can do it yourself.

Installing a tile splashback is a manageable DIY project that can be completed over a weekend.

With basic tools like a tile cutter, spacers, adhesive and grout, even those with minimal DIY experience can achieve professional-looking results.

If you want to copy the posh kitchen trend, it’s all about choosing the right tile.

Abbas said: “Glossy metro tiles, natural stone finishes or handmade-style zellige tiles are all big in high-end kitchens.

They add texture and depth, creating that expensive designer look.”

Meanwhile, herringbone and chevron patterns are hugely popular in celebrity homes and luxury interiors.

Abbas explained: “Laying tiles in a herringbone or vertical stack formation makes a space look taller and more stylish.

“It’s a small design tweak that gives a classy effect without any extra cost.”

To really nail the posh kitchen look, it’s all in the details.

Abbas said: “Choose a grout colour that complements your tiles.

“White grout with white tiles can look cheap, but opting for a soft grey or taupe grout gives a much more expensive finish.”

He also recommended good lighting.

The pro said: “Under-cabinet lighting bouncing off a glossy tile creates that show-home glow.”

For those on an even tighter budget or looking for a temporary solution, peel-and-stick tiles offer an affordable and hassle-free alternative.

These self-adhesive tiles can be applied directly over existing surfaces without the need for grout or special tools.

Prices for peel-and-stick tiles vary, with options available for as low as £2.25 per pack.

Kylie Jenner grabs Timothee Chalamet for an awkward kiss as he attempts to watch tennis match at the Indian Wells Open

FANS of Kylie Jenner are feeling rather cringed out after she grabbed Timothee Chalamet for an awkward kiss as he tried to concentrate on the tennis match they were at.

Attending the Indian Wells Open together, Kylie and Timothee could be seen sitting in the tennis court as they watched the match play out.

As the Wonka actor, 29, attempted to watch the match, Kylie, 27, couldn’t keep her hands off of her boyfriend.

Grabbing his face and kissing him, Kylie’s full attention was fixated on Timothee – but his mind was seemingly elsewhere.

As his girlfriend grabbed his face for a smooch, Timothee kept his eyes open and tried to turn his head away from her despite her attempts to kiss him.

Later in the clip, Kylie could be seen rubbing Timothee’s stomach and smiling at him as he attempted to concentrate on the match.

“I’m convinced he hates her lol,” said a Redditor who shared a video of the awkward moment on the social media platform.

“Notice how she spotted the camera right as the video starts. It’s all a show for her,” commented one person.

Another said: “Oh my goddd this was painful.”

“She does it all for the camera, he actually rolled his eye up into his head,” said a third.
