LUKE HUMPHRIES wants that “special feeling” of being a multiple world darts champion by the time he hangs up his arrows.
Yet Cool Hand Luke admits he was not prepared with how to deal with the exposure and fame that comes with lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy for the first time.
Luke Humphries is aiming to defend his Ally Pally crown[/caption]
Humphries defeated Luke Littler to win last year’s title[/caption]
Just six men have won the crown more than once and only Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson have ever retained the title.
Reigning world champion Humphries is determined to join that small but illustrious list, hopefully on the third day of the new year.
The No 1 seed said: “If I walked away from this sport tomorrow I’d be very happy with what I’ve achieved.
“Because every young player wants to be world champion — and not everybody can. I’ve achieved that.
“So, if I never went on to be world champion again, I’d still be very, very proud if I retired in 20 years because that always stays with you. It’s a lifetime achievement
“Of course, I want to win more. There’s a special feeling when you’re not just a one-time world champion, you’re a two or three-time champ.
“I really want to achieve more. But you have to accept that it might not work that way.
“You’d love to do it twice because there have been a lot of one-time world champions over the years. But it’s a rare occasion to be a double world champion.”
“I’ve enjoyed the niceties you get with being world champion. People congratulate you and shake your hand. Say congratulations. Or amazing achievements.
“It’s changed my life for the good and it will stay with me forever. Something I can hold onto and be very proud about.
“It’s nice when you’re out shopping and strangers say, ‘The way you carry yourself is amazing’. They are happy for you that you’ve achieved something. It’s nice to get that attention.
“There’s no prep. You don’t get taught how to deal with it. You’ve just got to learn on the job.
“You get thrown into this environment that you’re not used to.
“Your life can change very quickly and over the last 15 months, my life has changed incredibly. I’ve achieved so much in a short period of time.
“When you sleep in a different hotel every week, you never get as good a night’s sleep as at home.
“But what do you want to do? Be a world champion or complain about the travelling?”

BARGAIN hunters are set to splash £3.73billion today — averaging £236 each.
A mammoth 22.5million Brits will join the Boxing Day sales stampede, with 14.8million of us heading to high streets.
The predicted 5.8 per cent jump in shop-goers on last year heralds the first time since 2021 that post-Christmas sales have gone up.
It also follows a 17 per cent jump on this Christmas Eve compared to last year’s figures, according to Vouchercodes.co.uk.
Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Boxing Day continues to be a crucial time for the retail sector.
“The renewed interest in in-store shopping, alongside the enduring resilience of online platforms, demonstrates a more balanced and adaptive approach from consumers. We hope this will continue into the New Year.”
She predicted that shoppers would be shifting towards “practicality”, with more hoping to bag bargains on kitchen appliances.
Anita Naik, savings expert at Vouchercodes.co.uk, said: “There’s an increase in interest as shoppers’ financial situations improve.”
Retailers started slashing prices online yesterday, with discounts of up to 70 per cent.
Many shops, including Next, will open from 6am today, although John Lewis is keeping most of its sites closed and instead relying on online purchases.
Others high street regulars including Marks & Spencer and Poundland will not open.
Consumer watchdog Which?, meanwhile, urged people to check pricing history on comparison sites to ensure “deals” are genuine.
“All of us go through some form of suffering at some stage in our life, be it mental or physical,” he said, having endured his fair share recently.
But his thoughts were for the remarkable D-Day generation, for humanitarian organisations responding to conflict and for those throughout the Commonwealth who care for others.
Charles thanked the doctors and nurses who have supported him and his family, and praised communities who came together to heal their towns after the summer riots. He is continually impressed, he said, by those who dedicate their lives to helping others.
And there are few better examples of that than himself, Princess Kate and their close family.
Island retreat
MAURITIUS’S claim to sovereignty of the Chagos Islands was always feeble, as was the United Nations’ ruling in their favour in 2019 — voted for by China, Russia, North Korea and Belarus, of course.
So Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to give them away as one of his first big foreign policy priorities never made sense, particularly with the security threat posed by Mauritius’s friend China to the strategically vital US airbase on Diego Garcia.
Predictably, new Mauritian leader Navinchandra Ramgoolam is stalling on the deal, demanding more millions from British taxpayers for the lease of Diego Garcia — even though we are already gifting the island to them.
He perhaps senses Starmer’s rush to complete the surrender deal before Donald Trump becomes US President again and can veto it.
What an unnecessary mess, not to mention a gift to China and a slap in the face for our closest ally.
Vlad tidings
RUSSIA’S Christmas Day missile blitz on Ukraine is a savage reminder that evil does not take time off for a day of peace.
It should also focus attention on Britain’s own defence which, for a decade, has seen under-investment while Russia, Iran and China have all hugely increased rearmament.
The Government must spell out urgently how defence spending will be raised above 2.5 per cent of GDP, and how the current rapid decline in Armed Forces numbers will be reversed.
Ruben Amorim has endured a difficult start to life at Man Utd[/caption]
The Red Devils endured a humbling defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday[/caption]
The Portuguese manager had pondered whether to take the Prem plunge mid-season or wait until the end of the campaign before leaving Sporting Lisbon.
Unsurprisingly, the lure of Old Trafford and turning around a suffering beast proved too great.
But Amorim needs to wave a magic wand fast or risk seeing the season unravel, with dire consequences for summer recruitment.
Amorim has a preferred 3-4-3 formation and plenty of the squad he inherited are not designed to play in such a system.
If fans did not believe that a few weeks ago, they will do now.
SunSport looks at the five players Amorim needs to build his team around, the five who must be pushed through the exit door and those whose future remains in their hands…
STAYERS —
MANUEL UGARTE
Uruguayan midfielder struggled in his early games but that might have been because everything Erik ten Hag touched had already started turning to dust.
In recent weeks, Ugarte has looked like the real deal, with a genuine ability to do that vital dirty work in the middle.
The Uruguayan has shown signs of life under Amorim[/caption]
AMAD DIALLO
Ivorian wideman has been at United for five years — but is starting to turn his promise into something concrete.
Amorim needs the wider players in his attacking trident to be able to invert and cause problems but also have the ability to attack in the outer areas of the pitch. Amad ticks all those boxes, with pace to burn.
Amad Diallo has been a bright spot in an otherwise dreary season at United[/caption]
LENY YORO
Another United youngster and plagued by injuries after his summer arrival from Lille.
Plenty for the 19-year-old to learn and assuming Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire stay, they can help him live up to the reputation he arrived with from France.
Leny Yoro arrived from France with heaps of potential[/caption]
BRUNO FERNANDES
Some still accuse the Portuguese of being a flat-track bully but he remains at the creative hub of most of the things United do well.
Of course, Amorim needs his captain to lead, not hide, and Fernandes still has games where he might go missing. But if he plays well, usually so do United.
Bruno Fernandes remains at the heart of Man Utd[/caption]
KOBBIE MAINOO
Missed the start of the Amorim era through injury and three defeats in the four matches since his return does not augur well.
Mainoo, though, is still short of match sharpness. Yes, the 19-year-old makes mistakes.
But he has the ability to make a mark in midfield and can forge a proper partnership with Ugarte, given time to work on it.
Kobbie Mainoo remains one of United’s most promising players[/caption]
LEAVERS —
MARCUS RASHFORD
Rashford’s decision to go public on his willingness to leave his boyhood club might make things easier for Amorim than if he was seen to be pushing the England man out of the door.
But it was hard to see the forward being a natural fit for the Amorim system — even before the fallout of the past two weeks.
Unlike many of the potential discards, selling Rashford makes some economic sense, too, as any transfer fee can be calculated at full book value in the club’s Profit and Sustainability Rules accounting.
Marcus Rashford has signalled his desire to leave United[/caption]
ANTONY
Plenty of Stretford End regulars saw through the Brazilian after a couple of months when he joined in the summer of 2022.
Nearly 2-and-a-half years later, the rest of the United supporters have caught up.
Winger Antony represents the worst of Ten Hag’s scoop-up of Eredivisie players that he knew from his Ajax days.
The £85.5million flop offers nothing. Getting rid, even at a massive loss, is the only option.
Antony is producing another dreadful season[/caption]
CASEMIRO
The Brazilian’s arrival from Real Madrid might have made sense at the time and he did score in the Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle in 2023.
Yet United are now forking out a fortune for a midfielder who can barely rumble, let alone run, and who has been overtaken by the harshest enemy of all — time.
Casemiro’s best days in football appear to be behind him[/caption]
LISANDRO MARTINEZ
Another Ten Hag project who appears to be dialling it in over recent weeks — and making far too many mistakes.
The Argentine defender has never been that physically imposing but he keeps shrinking from battle.
He looks like a player who does not want to be there.
Lisandro Martinez has not delivered this season[/caption]
LUKE SHAW
Harsh to blame the England left-back — but his body is letting him down so much that Amorim cannot rely on him ever being fit.
Shaw would have been ideal as the left-sided wing-back for the next two years if he could guarantee availability. But he simply cannot.
Luke Shaw has suffered desperately with injuries[/caption]
LOTS TO PROVE —
MASON MOUNT
Another whose issues are physical but just nine Prem starts in 18 months since his move from Chelsea tell you everything about the England midfielder.
Mount, if fit, could definitely have a role, even if off the bench. Yet what are the chances of him staying available for long enough?
Mason Mount was forced off early against Man City[/caption]
RASMUS HOJLUND
United thought enough of the Dane’s potential to pay £64m up front to land him from Atalanta — and he will probably get the chance to be first-choice No 9.
Hojlund, though, has yet to convince that he is the natural predator United hoped they were signing.
He remains very much a work in progress.
Rasmus Hojlund has shown flashes of promise[/caption]
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO
Dropped for the 2-1 derby win over City and in the line of fire by some as United’s mole hunt continues, the winger made the right response in training.
Three Prem goals this season, though, is a poor return and that Puskas Award for his bicycle-kick stunner at Everton last term will mean little to the new manager.
Alejandro Garnacho has flattered to deceive this season[/caption]
JOSHUA ZIRKZEE
Precious little, so far, to suggest the Dutch striker can have a long-term Old Trafford future.
However, it makes little sense to ditch him after just a few months at the club.
Zirkzee has to demonstrate he is mobile and dangerous — to make things happen rather than wait for opportunities to fall at his feet.
Joshua Zirkzee has not yet delivered since joining from Bologna[/caption]
NOUSSAIR MAZRAOUI
Versatility and the ability to play in a number of roles at the back may help the Moroccan.
Yet he has done little so far to indicate he will be a part of the furniture for too long.
Hard to see him operating as a wing-back other than when injuries kick in and does he have the defensive resilience to be trusted in a back three? Up to him to provide the answer.
Noussair Mazraoui arrived from Bayern in the summer[/caption]

Meek’s professional acting credits date back to 2014, when he starred in the television movie The Santa Con, starring Melissa Joan Hart and Jaleel White, says IMDb.
Meek also appeared in the 2017 Edgar Wright-directed Baby Driver, portraying the younger version of the film’s main character Baby, played by Ansel Elgort.

They played on the same team in the annual match between the Sandringham estate workers and neighbouring villagers.
Wills, 42, is a keen Aston Villa fan and has taken George, 11, to Villa Park and also to cheer on England at Wembley.
In previous years, Prince Harry has joined William for the friendly match — but the last time the brothers took to the field is believed to be in 2016.
Wills and George were in the team wearing blue, with Wills having number 18 on his shirt, spectators said.
The Prince of Wales almost scored a goal as George was hailed by onlookers for energetically running around the pitch.
An insider said: “It just looked like healthy father-and-son bonding time.
“There were other children playing and it was all good fun and light-hearted.
“It is nice that they have returned to take part in the traditional game as they haven’t done so for years.
“But it was interesting to see that Harry has now been substituted for Prince George.”
Wills and George were watched from the sidelines by the Princess of Wales, 42, who was wearing a dark purple polo neck, long light purple waistcoat, beige trousers and a green peaked cap.
She had her long brown hair tied back in a plait and was holding a pair of black leather gloves.
Prince Louis, six, and Princess Charlotte, nine, were also there to cheer on their dad and brother and stood alongside their mum.
Louis, dressed in navy blue shorts, a light blue top and navy blue trainers, was even spotted taking part in a kickabout with mum Kate.
On the That Peter Crouch Podcast in 2020, Wills — once President of the FA and now its Patron — insisted George is free to support whichever team he likes.
He said: “I’m trying not to persuade him to be a Villa fan, I’m letting him choose his own way. It’s about finding what fits for him.”
But Wills revealed he had “concerns” about George leaning towards Chelsea when he was younger.
Chelsea take on Fulham at home in the Premier League today, while Villa are away at Newcastle United.

“Everyone’s happy. My mother’s had her hair and make-up done.”
Realising she had made a mistake with what meat the Collins clan and the twins would be tucking in to, Gemma then said: “Getting the gammon going. Oh it’s beef, sorry.

3 days agoLatest NewsComments Off on Major store recalls popular Christmas present for kids over ‘contamination’ – is your gift affected?
A MAJOR store has recalled a popular Christmas present for kids after reports of “contamination”.
The Orchard Toys Fun Food Bingo game was pulled off the shelves at Argos following official government guidance.
Shoppers who purchased Fun Food Bingo between September 1 and December 23 have been told to return it to their local Argos store.
The food-themed kids game was recalled having been deemed to present a microbiological risk to health.
Orchard Toys are offering affected consumers either a cash refund of £12, or a £20 voucher, with free delivery to use on the Orchard Toys website.
The Office for Product Safety and Standard said there may be a small amount of mildew on the cotton bag included in the game.
Mildew may pose a health risk to individuals with compromised immune systems, damaged lungs or an allergy to mildew.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards said that the affected products do not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
However, the risk level of the contamination is said to be low.
One woman posted on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains Group on Facebook alerting other people who didn’t know til the news.
She wrote: “Thought id post in case anyone has brought this for a Christmas present like us.”
It comes after Matalan issued an urgent recall of a Christmas decoration after it was found to pose a choking hazard.
The retailer is asking shoppers to bring back the festive-themed ornament immediately for a full refund.
Customers won’t need to provide a receipt to get their money back.
The Christmas Stripe tree decoration was on sale between August 5 and October 21 this year but may come apart and produce small parts which someone could choke on.
In a product recall notice, Matalan said: “If you have bought (the product) for someone else or know someone who has one then please let them know immediately about this notice.
“We pride ourselves on delivering great quality at great prices and we’re really sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
The product’s model is M207676 and the barcode should read 6207676000004.
You should be able to find both of these numbers on the product.
OTHER PRODUCT RECALLS
Product recalls are common practice among retailers with items pulled from shelves for a host of different reasons.
In most cases, products are pulled because there is a safety risk to customers.
You can read more about your rights concerning a recalled product in our guide.
John Lewis has been forced by safety officials to recall its latest Quality Street Sweet Glass Baubles due to their resemblance to the chocolates.
Officials warned that people risked being left with cuts to their mouth or hand if they tried to take a bite of the bauble.
The baubles were sold at John Lewis from September 1 to October 17.
Your product recall rights
Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know.
Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.
As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.
But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.
If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.
When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.
If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.
They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.
In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.
You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item.
