From ‘permission play’ to ‘sobergasms’ – the biggest trends to follow for more and better sex in 2025

US Brits will be having sex very differently in 2025, experts predict.

You don’t need to wait until the new year though, as a quiet revolution in how we approach bonking has been gaining traction throughout this year.

Sexual tastes are evolving, particularly when it comes to Gen Zers reading erotic fiction and women of all ages ditching the razor to embrace pubic hair.

In the era of X’s (formerly Twitter) #CancelPorn movement and various university studies suggesting that Gen Z is having less sex than millennials and boomers, a shift in sexual attitudes is undeniable.

Of course, 2024 has thrown up controversial content creators like Bonnie Blue and Lily Phillips still ringing the bell on proud promiscuity and traditional porn.

But as far as experts are concerned, including Lovehoney sexpert Annabelle Knight, 2025 is set to be a year of sexual awakenings.

Interestingly, experts predict that technology will likely weave its way further into our bedrooms, as cultural taboos around orgasms and pleasure will continue to unravel.

Fabulous takes a look at the biggest sex trends in 2025, and you can probably start implementing some of them now…

Sobergasms

Sobergasms – having sex and achieving orgasm without alcohol helping you along the way – is top of the list for 2025.

“Gen Z’s love affair with sobriety is reshaping how we date and it’s making sober sex cooler than ever,” explains Annabelle.

“Think first dates that swap cocktails for yoga classes, cooking workshops or even running clubs.

“It’s all about being fully present, emotionally and physically.”

Lovehoney data backs it up: a survey from the brand found that while 64% of the UK public have had drunk sex, this number drops to just 49% of those aged 18 to 24, signalling a shift in attitudes.

And Gen Z are also the most likely age group to be teetotal, with 15% choosing to be so, further cementing mindful dating and intimacy as commonplace in 2025.

Bush is Back!

Lazy girls, this one is great news for you.

“Body hair is back and it’s sexier than ever,” says Annabelle.

“Women are ditching the razor (and outdated beauty standards) and embracing natural grooming choices.”

Sex and your body

Everything you need to know about sex and your body

Why does sex hurt?

Can you have sex while pregnant?

Can you have sex on your period?

How long should sex last?

The exact number of times you should be having sex each week

What causes premature ejaculation?

How many calories does sex burn?

What is a squirting orgasm?

The sex positions most likely to give you a UTI

Research by sex toy brand Lovehoney showed a major shift in 2024, with fewer women under the age of 24 feeling pressured to always remove pubic hair.

“It’s all about celebrating yourself as you are, every little hair included,” Annabelle adds.

Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Ashley Graham have long been leading the way on embracing pubic hair, with the former revealing in an interview with Glamour that she “has a full bush”.

Up The Duff

“Can I have sex while pregnant?” This query has been soaring throughout 2024, with tens of thousands of mums seeking specialist advice from charity National Childbirth Trust. And the answer is yes, you absolutely can.

Fleur Parker, an NCT Practitioner and antenatal educator, says: “Many people approach sex during pregnancy with caution and may experience changes in their sex drive and sex life as a pregnancy progresses.

“But the most important thing to note is that sex during pregnancy is generally safe and will not harm your baby.”

“Sex during pregnancy is generally safe and will not harm your baby,” one expert confirmed[/caption]

“While an orgasm might occasionally trigger Braxton Hicks contractions later on in pregnancy, it’s nothing to worry about as lying down and relaxing can help them go away,” Fleur continued.

“In fact, you might find that you experience more intense orgasms during pregnancy, thanks to increased blood flow and heightened sensitivity.”

She added that “comfort during sex becomes crucial” as your body adapts to pregnancy, so you’ll need to explore different positions that reduce pressure on the abdomen.

Consent is (still) Sexy

Years in the wake of the #MeToo movement, explicit consent is growing traction as a must-have in the bedroom.

And new research from Lovehoney found that it’s actually a TURN ON.

A quick, “can I do this?” or, “would you like this?” shows intention, and modern Brits are very much into it.

The coming year is one of enthusiastic, confident and oh-so-sexy consent taking centre stage

Annabelle Knightsexpert

“In the new year consent isn’t just necessary – it’s hot,” says Annabelle.

“Explicit consent is becoming a sexy must-have, with ‘permission play’ putting a playful spin on the process.

“The coming year is one of enthusiastic, confident and oh-so-sexy consent taking centre stage.”

Let’s Get Fluid

Sexual tastes are evolving, especially when it comes to ethical non-monogamy.

This was tipped in data from Google at the end of 2023, which found that younger generations growing up in a digital world are turning their back on conventional romances and seeking something more open and free.

And following boxer David Haye, model Sian Osbourne and Saturdays singer Una Healy proudly showcasing their throuple, the practice only going to get bigger in 2025, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Saturdays singer Una Healy, boxer David Haye and model Sian Osbourne were once of the first celebrity throuples of a generation[/caption]

“Ethical non-monogamy and flexible dynamics are becoming the new norm,” says Annabelle.

“From polyamory to open relationships, it’s all about clear communication and respecting boundaries.

“In 2025, more people will explore love and relationships in ways that work for them.”

Erotic Reads

If you haven’t been living under a rock this year, you’ll have seen everyone from nurses and shop assistants to influencers and celebs reading Sarah J Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) book series on their work breaks.

It may have been published back in 2015, but thanks to BookTok, it’s become a cultural phenomenon.

According to Annabelle, 2024 was the year of the ‘romantasy’ genre, and plenty of British are now using steamy literature to get their sexual kicks.

A Court of Thorns and Roses boxed set by Sarah J. Maas.
Amazon
Sarah J Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) book series is giving erotic fiction a new lease of life[/caption]

Lovehoney research found that searches for ‘smut books’ skyrocketed by 78% between May 2023 and May 2024, with ACOTAR leading the charge

Another Lovehoney survey revealed that 34% of 25 to 34-year-olds and 23% of 18 to 24-year-olds enjoy erotica during their solo sessions.

So, it’s clear that romantasy and spicy reads aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. This might just be the new era of Fifty Shades of Grey

Friendship First

In 2024, single people became exhausted with meeting someone attractive only for it to fizzle out pretty quickly.

As a result, they’re going to slow things down in 2025 and form friendships as prerequisites to romance, according to the experts at dating app Happn.

Research from the app found that 88% of UK Singles think friendship is equally or more important than love in a relationship.

Meanwhile, 81% believe that being friends first creates a solid foundation for a long-lasting romance

“The friendzone can truly be the springboard for true romance,” says dating expert Claire Renier.

“This desire for stability is driving singles to view dating from a fresh perspective with shared values, honesty and transparency, building on the friendship within a relationship, and fostering deeper connections.”

I kissed my wife goodnight on Boxing Day then my world fell apart – she died on our lawn trying to protect our daughters

EMMA Lovell had just enjoyed a magical Boxing Day with her kids – but little did the family know that their life would turn upside down and this would be their last Christmas together.

After a wholesome Christmas, Emma and her husband, Lee, spent the evening of December 26, 2022, in the comfort of their own Brisbane-area home in Australia.

Lee, who’s left alone with their daughters Kassie and Scarlett, described his late wife as the ‘glue’ in their family[/caption]

By 11.30pm the pair was asleep and so were their two teenage daughters, Kassie and Scarlett, 14 and 15.

They thought they were safe and the family could’ve never predicted what was about to happen, as two boys, both 17, approached their residence that fateful night.

One of them checked whether the door was unlocked – and it was.

The thug gave a thumbs up to his accomplice who quickly joined him – whilst holding a knife close to his chest.

It was at this point that the couple, who had relocated to Australia in 2011 after first visiting the country in 2002, heard a noise from their bedroom.

Terrified, Emma and Lee approached the two 17-year-olds, before pushing them out onto their front lawn in a desperate attempt to protect their home and more importantly – their daughters.

After a struggle, one of the thugs who was carrying a knife decided to use it, first stabbing Lee in the back and then attacking 41-year-old Emma in the chest. The force was so brutal and vicious that the blade snapped.

By the time police and ambulance arrived, the daughters were standing over their mother, sobbing.

Despite the paramedics performing an open-heart surgery on the front lawn in an attempt to save Emma’s life, she died from the fatal stab wound.

‘Released immediately’

A few months later, in May, the attacker who delivered the fatal blow admitted to the murder and received a 14-year prison sentence.

His accomplice, however, was acquitted of murder and instead found guilty of burglary and assault causing bodily harm in company during a judge-only trial in October.

The now-19-year-old, whose identity remains protected due to legal reasons, was also charged with several other crimes in the months prior to the home invasion, including burglaries at other properties.

Justice Michael Copley sentenced him to 18 months in detention, but as he had already spent nearly two years in custody awaiting trial, he was released immediately following the sentencing.

Mr Lovell told Channel Nine’s A Current Affair that the court decision was a heavy blow for his family.

He said: “I wanted justice for Emma and I wanted justice for us and I just don’t feel that we’ve got that.

“Until things start to change for the court system and the laws are implemented, then how is this ever going to change for us or for anyone going forward?”

‘Took away our sense of safety’

Reading his victim impact statement in person, devastated and heartbroken Lee said: “A night of unimaginable tragedy started when you decided to enter my home.

“We made our home a place of love and protection … the actions of you and your co-offender took away our sense of safety,” he said.

“I still wake up at night fearing that someone is in our house again, constantly checking the cameras to make sure.

Sleep is a problem. I wake up thinking someone is inside my home.”

Outside court, Lee said the sentence was hard to take.

“It doesn’t feel like we have much of a justice system at all,” he said.

Lee also expressed frustration over what he viewed as a lenient punishment for the teenager.

The distraught husband argued that he should have received the same sentence as his co-offender.

The dad-of-two said in court: “Australia was supposed to be our dream come to life, but I can’t help feeling completely let down and broken.”

Lee shared that his daughters’ lives would never be the same and revealed he is now considering moving the family back to the UK.

“I feel like Boxing Day 2022 was like a sliding door moment for us,” he said while addressing the merciless teenage thug in court.

“Our life should have been going in one direction, and yet, here I am, because of the actions of you and your co-offender taking away my family’s right to expect peace, security, and safety within our family home.

“Now I am forced to play a role: the role of a grieving husband, a victim of assault, and a father, trying to make his family feel safe in our home again.”

The teenager’s defence barrister argued that he had shown “remorse and concern about the consequences of the break-in at the Lovell residence” and was making efforts to reform his life.

The judge acknowledged the offender’s troubled and problematic upbringing in a home that was plagued by drug abuse, domestic violence, and a father spending a lot of time behind bars.

“None of this excuses your offending, but it puts it into a broader context,” Justice Copley said.

During the trial, Justice Copley revealed that CCTV audio had captured chilling phrases like “I’ll kill you” and “stop” during the fatal attack, with the word “stop” being shouted numerous times.

‘Glue in our family’

Speaking of his late wife, Lee said she was “beautiful, amazing” and the “glue in our family,” adding that he often breaks down in tears over her loss.

“Emma was funny, smart, so caring, and would do anything for anyone,” he said.

“She died trying to protect me and our family.”

In a Facebook post on Christmas Day, shared just hours before the tragedy, Emma wrote: “So for the first time in 11 years we spent Christmas day on the beach and even managed to cook up some bacon and eggs!

“Hope everyone has a great Christmas Day with loved ones and friends.”

Gavin and Stacey star Mat Horne reveals next gig after finale – and it’s just days away

GAVIN And Stacey star Mat Horne has revealed his next acting gig after the epic BBC finale wrapped.

The Nottinghamshire-born TV favourite plays protagonist Gavin Shipman in the much-loved show – which saw more than 12 million Brits tune in on Christmas Day.

Mat also works as a DJ and will be behind the decks in London on December 31[/caption]

The last-ever episode of the treasured series spelled the end of Ruth Jones and James Corden‘s programme forever – 17 years after it was first created.

Fans watched Mat’s character play a key role in intervening in Smithy’s wedding – flagging his view on the unsuitability of his partnership with Sonia – before James’ character went on to propose to Nessa in tear-jerking scenes.

The one-off episode, which aired at 9pm on Christmas Day, was confirmed as the final instalment of the drama, which first screened in May 2007, after three series and three Christmas specials.

Yet The Sun was first to report how BBC bosses “live in hope” of a spin-off.

Yet while speculation of a follow-up mounts, Mat has secured his next work before 2024 is out.

He will be DJ-ing at Propeganda’s “alternative and indie party” in London on New Year’s Eve.

A poster for the event on December 31 at Camden’s Electric Ballroom advertises his DJ set as well as that of DJ Dan, who is an Oasis Aftershow DJ.

Organisers promise the event will be full of tunes from the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, The Killers and Wet Leg.

They added: “The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special may be the only thing on our wish list this year, but we promise this will be THE night to remember!

“Mathew Horne (Gavin) and DJ Dan (Oasis Aftershow DJ) will be bringing the bangers and vibes to ring in the new year and make you feel like you’re in the best party in Barry Island! Crackin’.”

They added: “You know what would be well lush? Grab your mates, binge some Gavin and Stacey, and sort your tickets for the best indie night of the year in London!

“Buy your tickets now to secure your spot! Tidy!”

Tickets for the event are priced from £15.

Gavin and Stacey's Best Moments

With the news that the show is set to make an exciting return to screens, let's take a look at some of the comedy programme's biggest and best moments...

  • Smithy and Rudi’s American Boy rap – No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith rapped perfectly word for word the Kanye West and Estelle hit American Boy as they walked across the car park on the phone to Gavin.
  • Pam’s Vegetarian faux pas – Despite loving a cheesburger, Pam found herself caught up in a web of unexpected lies when she claimed to be Vegetarian. She is forced to keep up the secret throughout the entire show and uses hubby Mick to help her scoff meat. She is later rumbled when Stacey catches her in the act as she scoffs ham in the kitchen. Stacey says to her: “Is that ham, Pam!?… “I’ve seen you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, putting those regular sausages into the Linda McCartney box”.
  • THAT fishing trip – It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history as to just exactly what did happen on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn appears to be hiding a secret as to an occurance between him and his nephew Jason which has left relations fractures. Ness’ on-off boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person to know the whole truth. Bryn did appear to allude to him and Jason lying together naked to keep warm as he said to Dave: “We’re going to have this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened, David, but you don’t know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you are that cold…”
  • Islands in the Stream – No one can ever forget the classic Karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the track in front of all their nearest and dearest. It saw the whole pub burst into some line-dancing as they enjoyed a boozy night out.
  • The Xmas special proposal – In 2019, fans were left overjoyed when the show made a comeback but it ended on the ultimate cliffhanger. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him as she finally laid bare her feelings for him. Fans were gutted as the show then cut straight to the credits as they never found out just how Smithy answered. Will all be revealed in the brand new episode?

Although Mat is best known for Gavin And Stacey, he appeared in numerous other shows, including comedy programmes such as The Catherine Tate Show, Teachers and Horne And Corden.

NEXT CHAPTER?

Insiders have told The Sun how TV execs are keen to coax more Gavin and Stacey-related material from co-writers James and Ruth.

A source said: “It would be madness to close the door on such a hit.”

The spin-off could come in the form of a sitcom following warring couple Dawn and Pete, insiders said.

A TV source said: “James and Ruth are adamant this is the last of Gavin & Stacey. But, when a programme achieves such results, execs will always hope for more.

“At the end of the day, ratings talk and it would be madness to close the door on such a hit forever when fans loved it so much.

“Bosses have had casual discussions about whether options like a Pete and Dawn spin-off could work.

“They were always more separate to the main group and a new universe could be developed which didn’t involve any of the core cast, so James and Ruth’s involvement could be a little different.”

But wasted no time in removing Christmas from her home

Charlotte took to Instagram to share a post showing her taking down the tree in her huge hallway.

She told fans: “Decorations down.

“Decluttered 3 diff rooms and spaces in the house.”

She had previously shown off the stunning decorations at the home she shares with fiance Jake Ankers and their daughter Alba, two.

The couple are expecting their second child and – while revealing her decoations this year – Charlotte told fans “Last Christmas as a 3.

“We are so ready to meet you now baby girl. not long now.”

Earlier this month Charlotte shared her heartbreak after a family member was hospitalised just days before Christmas.

Charlotte’s dad Gary took to social media to share the news with his followers.

Posting a snap of his grandaughter, he said: “Been struggling lately with my Mam in hospital poorly, but this little one makes me smile so much.”

Charlotte, replied to his dad’s emotional post with a number of red love hearts.

It came just weeks after her home was burgled which left the TV star terrified.

The frightening ordeal occurred last month when Charlotte was upstairs with Alba in their £1 million Sunderland home.

Jake, 33, revealed on social media that a gang of masked robbers armed with machetes stormed inside their stunning mansion.

The Sun later told how the pair have taken extra measures to make sure that they are free from danger.

A source said: “It’s been a horrible week for them.

“What happened really shook them up and Charlotte doesn’t feel safe at home.

“They’ve hired close protection security for the house.

“Charlotte’s pregnant so keeping her, the baby and their daughter safe is the priority.”

CORONATION Street legend Kevin Webster will battle cancer in a harrowing new storyline on the soap.

The mechanic – who is played by actor Michael Le Vell in the ITV soap – has been a mainstay on the cobbles for 41 years but next year he will face hi toughest battle yet.

And it’s going to hit his wife Abi hard too as she struggles with her own ordeal.

New producer Kate Brooks told The Sun: “As we go into the new year, Kevin will discover that he’s got testicular cancer, which causes a massive strain on his relationship.

“Abi is a really strong character, but she’s going through her own turmoil at the same time.

“We want to tell this really truthfully. We’ve been working closely with Macmillan to make sure that we tell the story right.

“Ultimately, it’s about their relationship and testing that relationship.”

Working with Macmillan has meant Corrie is keen to raise awareness of the disease – and have Kevin speak frankly about what he’s going through.

“It was really important that we don’t show Kevin being embarrassed or being reticent to talk to his friends about it,” Kate added.

“He’s quite open about it, which I thought was quite refreshing.

“He talks to Tim and Steve about it, and they all have their own way of handling it, but ultimately it’s about his relationship with Abi, and that is going to be truly tested.

“As I alluded to, Abi is going through her own situation as she struggles with the aftermath of a big event that happens in January.

“She loves Kevin and he loves her, but temptation comes Abi’s way…”

Meanwhile with a cancer battle and a wandering wife, Kevin and sister Debbie will come face to face with their long-lost brother Carl when he makes his debut in Weatherfield.

Symptoms of testicular cancer

The most common sign is a lump or swelling on one of your testicles, which is normally about the size of a pea.

Not all testicular lumps are cancerous, while only four per cent of scrotal lumps are, but you should still always get your GP to take a look.

Here are the signs to look out for:

  • A lump or swelling in the testicle
  • A heavy scrotum
  • A dull ache or sharp pain in the testicles and scrotum
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • A difference in the texture or increase in firmness of the testicle
  • A difference between one testicle and the other

To know if you have any signs of changes in your testicles, it’s important to know what feels normal.

It’s a good idea to have a hot shower before checking them, then gently roll your testicle between your thumb and finger.

Then repeat for the other testicle.

Repeat this every week so you get a feel for their shape and siz

Kate revealed: “We’ve got Carl Webster coming into the show, who is Debbie and Kevin’s brother, to build up that Webster clan.

“We’ve got big stories coming up for Debbie and Kevin. It’s about building that clan up. For me, the Websters, Barlows and Platts are the big clans.”
