THE drive to hit Net Zero by 2050 has made Britain “dangerously dependent” on China, Kemi Badenoch warned yesterday.
The Tory leader hit out at the “over-reliance” on the communist state to help make us carbon free — after she called the target an impossible fantasy.
Her move against the Net Zero deadline aligns her with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and moves her away from Sir Keir Starmer, who is sticking to the pledge.
Ms Badenoch said: “The top solar panel makers are nearly all Chinese.
“Net Zero makes us dangerously dependent on countries that don’t share our values.
“It’s time to stop pretending everything will be fine.”
She has now tasked her Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho to deliver a raft of new proposals for cheap and clean energy.
But Sam Hall, director of the Conservative Environment Network, said: “It is a mistake to have pre-empted our policy review by deciding that Net Zero by 2050 isn’t achievable.”
A YouGov poll shows 52 per cent of those who voted Tory at the last election support the 2050 Net Zero target.
