AHEAD of the hit comedy’s final ever episode, Ruth Jones reveals how a popular Gavin and Stacey character was only supposed to be in one episode.
Ruth who plays the formidable Nessa has also been talking about her first memory on the show prior to the much anticipated Christmas special which airs soon.
Recalling her first memory Ruth said: “Day one filming in London on Dave’s coach with Jo Page.
“It was so exciting that this show me and James had been working on for all this time was finally coming to life.
“Being in Leicester Square dressed as Nessa and handing Smithy a piece of pizza and both our characters taking such an instant dislike to one another,
“Who’d have thought those two characters would go on the journey they’ve so far gone on!”
The last Gavin and Stacey Christmas special in 2019 was the most-watched scripted TV show of the 2010s, with 17.1 million viewers in its first week.
And as fans get ready to bid a teary farewell to their favourite characters, Ruth reveals that one of them was only ever meant to be in one episode.
“Characters in the show have developed along the way.” she explains.
“For example, Dave Coaches was only ever meant to be in one episode for the trip to London.
“But Steffan is such a great actor and he brought the character so brilliantly to life, we ended up writing him in pretty much all the episodes!”
Steffan Rhodri who plays Dave Coaches is certainly happy about that because he recognized how great the show was in the first ever episode.
He said: “After the first episode aired a comedian I knew in Cardiff came up to me in the street and said how much he’d loved it.
“He quoted back to me Dave’s line about “fags and weed…etc” and I remember thinking that if people are already quoting catchphrases after one episode then this seems to be striking something special.”
“I had to convince my agent that it was worth doing what she considered a small part.
“I sensed it was a hit and had no doubt about doing it.”

When asked about his favourite scene, Steffan replied: “I think the wedding from the final episode of series 3 is my favourite.

A BRITISH woman has died after her car crashed and ended up in a canal in Italy.
Police spotted the vehicle in the water half-hidden among vegetation during a routine patrol and raised the alarm.
Firefighters managed to reach the car and open it using specialist equipment and discovered the 44-year-old victim’s body inside.
After attempts to revive her, the woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Local reports said that CCTV footage of the tragic accident was obtained by police, showing the unnamed woman crashing after hitting a pothole on a wet road.

The Sun were the first to reveal the full line-up for the exciting new show earlier this year.
Strictly head judge Shirley Ballas will also be put through her paces by Bear on the programme as will rugby hunk Danny Cipriani and actor Kola Bikinni.
Chef and grime star Big Zuu rounds-out the line-up alongside models Lottie Moss and Leomie Anderson as well as Changing Rooms presenter Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen.
GUNS N’ ROSES have announced two UK dates next year as part of their European and Middle East tour.
The band will play Birmingham Villa Park on June 23 and London Wembley Stadium on June 26.
Fans can sign up for access to the pre-sale, which starts at 9am, today, via the official Guns N’ Roses website, while the general sale will start this Friday at 9am.
The UK dates mark their return to these shores for the first time since their show at British Summer Time (BST) Festival in 2023.
The BST show followed their headline set at Glastonbury Festival the same month, where they topped the bill on the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday night of the event, with Elton John and Arctic Monkeys performing the other two headline slots.

THOMAS FRANK amazed fans with his brilliant speech following Brentford’s win over Newcastle last weekend.
The Bees boss was thrilled with his side after they beat the Toon 4-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, Nathan Collins and Kevin Schade were on the scoresheet for the home side, who climbed to the ninth in the table.
In brilliant dressing room footage posted by Brentford‘s social media team, Frank heaped praise upon his team.
The passionate boss, 51, began: “Just wow. Honestly, wow. It’s a good team. They are a good team with good players.
“And you, totally fair, honestly completely well deserved win. Well done.”
Frank then picked out some of his players for specific praise, and didn’t just refer to his star men.
He continued: “A couple of things… 100 Premier League games for (Christian) Norgaard.
“Two hundred games for Brentford, Ethan Pinnock.
“As you know, it’s a full squad. We need everyone to be available, everyone ready.

“But Fabio (Carvalho) and Igor (Thiago), doing very well just coming in.

After huge applause for the Ukrainian midfielder, Frank concluded: “Let’s get that music going boys!”
Fans adored Frank’s brilliant post-match speech.

ROCKETMAN actor Taron Egerton has been spotted getting rather close to his new love interest.
The 35-year-old Welsh actor was spotted strolling around New York City on Sunday, with him accompanied by stunning American actress Chloe Bennet, 32. The pair even packed on the PDA, seemingly confirming their relationship.
Taron, who played Elton John in the epic biopic Rocketman, could be seen with his hair buzzed while donning a green puffer jacket, and his face looking stoic as he walked around the Big Apple.
With his puffer jacket, Taron wore some blue jeans with some brown shoes. He also rocked some sunglasses to shield his eyes from the winter sun.
Meanwhile, Chloe rocked a long grey coat and scarf, with the brunette beauty keeping her makeup natural with a nude lip and bold brows.

LUIGI Mangione emerged as the primary suspect in the high-profile murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
He was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania five days after the assassination in New York City on December 4, 2024, which sparked a nationwide manhunt.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was born and raised in Maryland, with his last known residence in Honolulu, Hawaii.
He attended the Gilman School, an elite $40,000-a-year Baltimore prep school, graduating as valedictorian in 2016.
One former student from the Gilman School told The U.S. Sun Mangione was “popular” and had a “big circle of friends.”
The former student, who asked not to be identified, said: “We went to the same school but didn’t really have the same friends. I’m really shocked by this whole thing.
“I think he played soccer, it was an all-boys school, so being a good athlete got you social currency for sure.”
They added: “It’s not uncommon that people have their gripes with CEOs, especially with CEOs of healthcare in this country, but to assassinate someone?”
“That sounds very, very insane to me. The world is a crazy a** place.”
In 2020, Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer, and Information Science, per his LinkedIn profile.
Mangione was actively involved in campus life, reportedly working as a teaching assistant and founding a video game development club.
He also served as a head counselor for a pre-collegiate studies program at Stanford University during the summer of 2019.
The suspect’s great-grandfather, Nicholas Mangione, was a first-generation American who built a real estate empire in Maryland and owned the Turf Valley Resort, Hayfields Country Club and the WCBM-AM radio station. He also founded the Lorien Health Services nursing home.
Mangione is the cousin of Republican Maryland House of Delegates member Nino Mangione.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Mangione was a data engineer at TrueCar, an online platform for buying and selling vehicles.
However, a spokesperson for TrueCar told The U.S. Sun: “While we generally don’t comment on personnel matters, we can confirm that Luigi Mangione has not been an employee of our company since 2023.”

On December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside the Hilton Midtown Hotel in Manhattan, New York.
The attack appeared to be premeditated, with the gunman seemingly waiting for Thompson before shooting him in the chest.
The execution was caught on surveillance, and the suspect was seen escaping toward Central Park on a bike, sparking a citywide search for the assassin.
Following an extensive week-long search, Mangione was apprehended on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
A McDonald’s employee called the cops on the suspect, who was “sitting there eating,” New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press conference on Monday, December 9.
Upon his arrest, Mangione was found in possession of several incriminating items:
Initially charged with firearms offenses in Pennsylvania, Mangione was later charged with murder in New York City.
While the exact motive remains unclear, authorities have noted that Mangione’s handwritten document revealed his “motivation and mindset”.
