World Darts Championship tiebreaker rules: When is sudden death played and how many legs do you have to win set by?
BIG time darts is back this weekend as the PDC World Championship returns to our screens.
The likes of Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen will all be vying to win the coveted Sid Waddell trophy in January.
Luke Humphries beat over Luke Littler 7-4 in last year’s final[/caption]World Darts Championship 2024/25: FULL schedule
But first they’ve got to get past a gruelling schedule, one requires SEVEN victories to lift the big one.
Unlike most of the tour calendar, in which you have to win a certain number of legs to win the match, the PDC World Darts Championship will be decided on set play.
It’s even possible that you could win more legs than your opponent, but still exit the tournament by losing more sets.
SunSport have the lowdown on all things format, tiebreaks and sudden death legs.
What is the PDC World Darts Championship format?
The first round of the World Champs is a best of five sets. To win a set you have to win a best of five legs series.
The number of sets needed to win increases as the tournament goes on until the final, where the first person to win the most sets out of 13 (first to seven) will win the entire tournament.
- First round: Best of 5 sets (first to 3)
- Second round: Best of 5 sets (first to 3)*
- Third round: Best of 7 sets (first to 4)
- Fourth round: Best of 7 sets (first to 4)
- Quarterfinals: Best of 9 sets (first to 5)
- Semifinals: Best of 11 sets (first to 6)
- Final: Best of 13 sets (first to 7)
*From this round on, the deciding set has to be won by two clear legs.
When is there a tiebreak and sudden death?
From the second round onwards, you can no longer win the final set by just one leg.
E.g. if the score is 2-2 in sets and in the final set the score is 2-2, the two players will keep on playing until the final set is won by TWO clear legs.
So the final set can be won 3-0, 3-1, 4-2 or 5-3.
If, however, the score reaches 5-5, then a sudden death leg will be played and the winner of that leg will win the final set 6-5.
There is no throw for bullseye to determine who goes first in that sudden death leg. Whoever is on throw will throw first.
Love Island’s Kady secretly dating multi millionaire reality star AGAIN just weeks after accusing him of cheating
LOVE Island star Kady McDermott has done a U-turn on her ‘cheating’ boyfriend – after claiming he had been unfaithful to her.
Brunette bombshell Kady was clocked looking cosy in her ex’s Ferarri holding boxes of pizza.
The reality star was spotted in the heir’s lavish car[/caption] Kady had accused her boyfriend of having ‘no morals’[/caption]Covering her face with the takeaway, the star was seen sat in the front seat of the unmissable motor with orange interior and his initials imprinted in.
Posting the picture on social media, the star looked smart in black trousers and a black cropped top with a dark brown jacket.
The former Towie member started dating loaded reality TV star Henry Simmons in September 2024 – but made a shock swipe at him last month after being rocked by cheating rumours.
The dating show alumni previously announced that she was very much single and that you ‘can’t change bad morals’.
The Sun was first to report the influencer’s break-up with Henry Simmons, 25.
The stunning star made her bad blood public between the pair as she posted cutting comments.
Henry – who found fame as the bad boy in ITV‘s Absolutely Ascot –was Kady‘s first public romance since she dated her Love Island co-star Ouzy See, 30.
Things soon turned sour with the heir to a wealthy property developer and she called time on their relationship.
The Love Island star – who has featured on the ITV2 dating show twice – told followers on TikTok: “I caught two girls leaving his house Saturday morning whilst he was in his boxers.
“I’m definitely not the problem.”
Kady later took a swipe at her ex on social media, telling fans: “If any of you see me with a man again just know I was held hostage cos I am honestly DONE with them all.
“No matter how good you are to someone you can’t change their bad morals unfortunately.
“Onwards and upwards.”
Kady entered Love Island for a second time last year and coupled up with Scottish footballer Ouzy in Casa Amor, but they split weeks after leaving the villa.
The bikini babe first found fame when she appeared on Love Island in the summer of 2016.
It was there she met now ex-boyfriend Scott Thomas and the pair went on to finish in third place.
After leaving the villa, they tried to make ago of it, but split not long after.
Kady’s next serious boyfriend was when she got together with Towie star Myles Barnett in 2018.
They split several times during their rocky romance, and finally confirmed that it was all over in 2021.
Kady then enjoyed a brief romance with footballer Matty Cash but they also ended up going their separate ways.
Kady then went on to date Londoner Liam Greer for more than a year before returning to Love Island.

The Manchester United legend said he ‘nearly fainted’ parting with the cash – but already it has started paying dividends.

Sir Alex has taken his love of racing to new levels since retiring more than ten years ago.
Along with pals Ged Mason, Peter Done and John Hales (who made his fortune with the Teletubbies) he has enjoyed stratospheric success over the jumps and on the Flat.
Just last weekend his big Cheltenham Festival Arkle hope L’Eau Du Sud won his owners £57,000 with victory in a Grade 1 novice chase at Sandown.
That came hours before Sir Alex’s horse Spirit Dancer – who has made his owners almost £2million – ran in the Hong Kong Cup.
It wasn’t to be for him there, with the £2.25m first-place prize going to Romantic Warrior, but there’s no doubt the Richard Fahey-trained runner has turned into a walking cash machine.
And the same could happen to the hugely exciting Caldwell Potter.
Sir Alex and chums went to then-record lengths to buy the horse at a dispersal sale last February.
Already a Grade 1 novice hurdler for former trainer and owners Gordon Elliott and Caldwell Construction, he was sent to Paul Nicholls after the sale.
The master trainer unleashed the six-year-old at Carlisle earlier this month and he won by five lengths on his chasing debut.
With the win worth a shade over £8,000, it hardly made a dent in the horse’s purchase price.
But much, much bigger things are expected – even if Sir Alex is still coming to terms with having to part with so much cash.
Speaking to At The Races about the horse, Sir Alex said: “This year we have some really good horses.
“Caldwell Potter is the one who really took my breath away.
“He was up for sale in Ireland and John said ‘we may have to go to 600,000 euros’ and at that point I fainted.
“Then he says ‘it’s gone to 700,000’ and he asked if I wanted to stay in. I said, ‘John, you’ve taken us this bloody far, carry on!”
“Gordon Elliott was very kind and he wrote me a nice letter after, he was desperate to keep the horse.
“He tried hard, going round all the sources he had, but fortunately we got it.
“And he won his first race last week. I’m hopeful.”
Asked if he is the one who really has Sir Alex dreaming of big things, he replied, without missing a beat: “At that price, he better be!”
Incredibly, Sir Alex and friends would later smash their own record buy with the £660,000 deal for the unbeaten Regent’s Stroll.
He, along with Caldwell Potter, L’Eau Du Sud, Protektorat and Il Ridoto, among others, head up the footie legends awesome squad for this jumps season.

Inside Gino D’Acampo’s bizarre marriage… from enjoying ‘single life’ abroad to speaking just ’20 mins a week’ while away
HE’S been one of ITV’s biggest stars ever since winning the nation over with his Italian charm on I’m A Celebrity.
But TV chef Gino D’Acampo is now being slowly sidelined by ITV bosses amid a string of claims about inappropriate behaviour.
Fred Sirieix and Gino D’ACampo strip TOTALLY naked while filming a show[/caption]Gino has been accused of inappropriate behaviour by a woman he worked with between 2006 and 2011 on flagship show This Morning, where he was resident chef, and on Saturday Cooks.
It is understood she decided to speak out as a raft of allegations against the BBC’s MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace came to light.
Gino is accused of jokingly flashing — with crew members on Emission Impossible, his show with Fred Sirieix, offered counselling afterwards.
Gino has now been edged out of Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip after refusing to sign a morality contract clause, and been put on a language and behavioural course by concerned executives.
The loss of work is sure to be a blow not only to Gino, but also his wife of 22 years, Jess D’Acampo, who has stuck by him through thick and thin – quitting her job to look after their three children when he first hit the big time.
She even stayed with him during his two-year prison stint and the pair have an unconventional relationship, with Gino admitting he still enjoys his “single life” and only calls his wife for 20 minutes a week while away.
Gino met his “first love” Jess – who is half-Italian, half-British – when he was 18, working at Sylvester Stallone’s Mambo King restaurant in Marbella.
He once said of her: “My wife is a clever woman, she knows when to say something and when to bite her tongue.”
2 years in prison
It was rocky at first, and they broke up for a year, but the time they spent apart made their bond stronger and after reconciling, they moved to the UK together in 1995.
It could have almost been over for good in 1998, when Gino was sentenced to two years in prison for burgling singer Paul Young’s home.
Gino stole £4,000 worth of guitars, a platinum record, cash and jewellery from Young’s mansion, and was arrested after his DNA was found on a discarded cigarette butt.
While he was locked up, Gino decided he wanted to start a new page when he was released.
“I was a boy, so I decided to get married and then I will be a man,” he said.
So he and Jess got married in 2002, and they had their first son Luciano, now 22, soon after.
It wasn’t until 2009 that things changed for Gino and Jess.
He was one of the lesser-known campmates when he entered the I’m A Celebrity jungle, alongside the likes of Katie Price and Kim Woodburn.
But Gino won – and, soon after, Jess quit her HR manager job to become a “lady of leisure,” as Gino puts it, and look after their sons, Luciano and Rocci, now 19.
“I clean her car every week. I charge her toothbrush every time the battery is low, and I always bring her a bottle of cold water just in case she’s thirsty at night,” he added.
They also had a third child, Mia, now 10, in 2014.
‘Single life’
Gino and Jess in 2009[/caption]Gino has said he and Jess have “a traditional marriage,” although part of the reason they work is the lack of time they’re in each other’s company.
He told Love Sunday: “Jessica and I don’t really spend any time together.
“I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve lasted for 20 years.
“It’s a good thing, I don’t really want to know everything my wife does, because otherwise she will be boring to me.”
My wife goes for dinner with male friends and I go for dinner with female friends or business friends. We are very relaxed.
Gino D'Acampo
Gino has also confessed he enjoys “the single life” while he’s away travelling for work, only speaking to his wife 20 minutes a week.
“You need to balance your married life with your ‘single life’,” he previously said.
“There is a time where the family is together, when I’m with my wife and everybody to celebrate holidays and everything like that.
“But there has to also be a time when I do things by myself and when she does things by herself.
“I can be away for a month and I will talk to my wife once a week for about 20 minutes. Then, when I come back, we can talk about it all.
“Some of my friends talk with their wives for an hour and I’m thinking, ‘What the hell are you going to say to your wife every day for an hour that you can’t say when you’re in person?'”
Gino also says he spends time with other females alone – taking them out for dinner and drinks.
He added: “Do you think that if I wanted to be unfaithful to my wife, I’d need to organise a holiday?
“I can do it anytime and anywhere. So once you get that out of your head, going on holiday alone doesn’t matter.”
‘Jess gives me freedom’
Gino has also insisted he and Jess have total trust in each other, and she’s not “jealous” of him being “surrounded by women”.
Speaking to Weekend magazine, Gino said: “When I met my wife I realised she was an extremely generous, clever woman.
“My friends’ girlfriends stopped them doing things, but from day one Jessica gave me a lot of freedom.
“If you try to cage men it won’t work. I can do pretty much what I want. If I say, ‘I’m taking friends out’ she doesn’t say, ‘But you’ve been away for the past week’.
“There’s no point having a man around if he doesn’t want to be there.”
He added to Daily Star: “We allow each other to have our own lives, that means going on holiday with our friends.
“My wife goes for dinner with male friends and I go for dinner with female friends or business friends. We are very relaxed.”
TV vow renewal
Gino and Jess renewed their vows on their 20th anniversary[/caption] He surprised her over dinner on his TV show[/caption] He revealed the waitress was actually going to marry them[/caption]In 2021, for their 20th wedding anniversary, Gino surprised Jess with a wedding vow renewal in Puglia, on his TV show, Gino’s Italian Family Adventure.
While they were sitting having dinner together in a restaurant, Gino pointed at the waitress, and said: “So the Bella, she’s not really a waiter, she’s going to marry us again.”
Shocked, Jessica replied: “Are you being serious?”
Dressed in a white shirt and tie, Gino then handed her a bouquet of flowers, and said: “Yes, this is for you.”
Gino then showed Jessica a tablet screen to reveal their children on a video call.
Mia said: “Mummy you look beautiful, I wish I was there!”
Seeing his tearful mum, Luciano said: “Mum stop crying. It’s a happy day.”
Strictly’s Shirley Ballas accused of ‘blatant favouritism’ as fans threaten to switch off
STRICTLY’S Shirley Ballas has been accused of ‘blatant favouritism’ by fans threatening to switch off.
Last month, Shirley, 64, was forced to hit back back after online trolls launched a petition to get her kicked off the show.
It followed her decision to vote off singer Shayne Ward – which also led to abuse on social media.
But it appears BBC viewers have come for her again, ranting on Reddit that they won’t tune in to the next series if she returns.
In a forum titled, “If Shirley is still Head Judge next year, I probably won’t watch,” one wrote: “As Head Judge, they have the deciding vote so they MUST be impartial. Her blatant favouritism puts the integrity of the entire competition into disrepute and I cannot see how her position is anything other than untenable.”
Another added: “Shirley’s inconsistent with her making, and her comments to Chris [McCausland] are so patronising, as well. She’s an uncomfortable watch, at best.”
Someone else said: “Shirley I liked when she first started but she has got worse over time and it’s clear when she has favourites (e.g. Pete [Wicks]).”
Shirley, who joined the BBC One series seven years ago, got a barrage of stick after November’s shock dance-off between Coronation Street actor Shayne and Wynne Evans.
It resulted in the judges saving the opera singer.
Some people started a petition calling for Shirley to be sacked from her role.
She later hit out at the “vitriol” and pledged her future to the show.
Asked if she is going to be part of the line-up next year, Shirley said: “You know, I’m not going anywhere as long as the BBC would like to have me.”
She added firmly: “I judge without fear or favour.
“I’m just someone who sits in that chair as head judge to stay in my lane and judge the dancing — legs, feet, body co-ordination, synchronisation and chemistry between the leader and the follower.”
Fans also claimed the show was ‘so fixed’ after Towie star Pete Wicks and Jowita Przystał took to the dance floor.
Addressing the pair afterwards, Shirley said: “A very masculine approach to the Rumba, I like that. With a very feminine lady on the end of your arm.
“I loved all the lifts. There probably shouldn’t have been lifts, should’ve been keeping your feet on the floor.
“But I’m going to let them slide. You picked up – they were excellent in what you did.”
She added: “You isolated the upper-half of your body and you rolled those hips in the figure eight… I was mesmerised.
“I just need a little bit more of that figure of eight everywhere and you would have delighted me.
“That isolation, I’ll be thinking about that for a week!”
Some viewers, however were left unimpressed by Shirley’s assessment.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one wrote: “Still can’t believe how brutal the judges were on Sam.
“Yet afterwards Shirley says she’ll ignore Pete’s faults & illegal lifts cause she was turned on by ONE hip movement… HOW IS SHE EMPLOYED?!
“The gender bias is infuriating, every year!”
Another added: “Shirley is meant to be Head judge!!
“She shouldn’t be allowed to let things like lifts or bad footwork slide just because someone smiles & wiggles their bum.”
While a third wrote: “i love pete but shirley choosing to ignore the lifts is hilarious considering if that was a female celeb she would have eaten them alive.”
Strictly stars at risk of the axe in 2025
Gorka Marquez joined Strictly Come Dancing as a professional dancer in 2016 when he was partnered with EastEnders actress Tameka Empson. The following year he was partnered with singer Alexandra Burke. They reached the final and finished as one of the runners-up.
In 2020, he was partnered with actress Maisie Smith. Again, he made it to the final and finished as a runner-up.
He failed to make it third time lucky in 2022, finishing runner-up again with Helen Skelton.
Nadiya Bychkova joined the show in 2017 with EastEnders actor Davood Ghadami. The pair reached Week 11, finishing in 6th place.
Her best performance to date came in 2021 when she finished fifth with Dan Walker.
Neil Jones has been without a celebrity partner more times than he’s had one since joining in 2016.
His best finish was with ex-footballer Alex Scott in 2019, finishing in fifth.
Katya Jones was another 2016 addition and made an instant impression with politician Ed Balls. Their Gangnam Style routine is still a favourite to this day.
In 2017 she lifted the Glitterball with Joe McFadden.
The following year she was at the heart of a show scandal after snogging her dance partner, the comedian Seann Walsh.
Karen Hauer has been an ever-present since 2012.
Despite her lengthy association with the show, she’s never lifted the Glitterball. The closest she came was in 2020 when she finished runner-up with Jamie Laing.
‘He’s done’: Mike Tyson’s wife bans boxing legend from fighting again after losing to Jake Paul
MIKE TYSON’s hopes of returning to the ring have been brutally KO’d – by his wife.
The former undisputed heavyweight champion returned to the ring last month for a shock showdown with YouTube sensation Jake Paul.
Mike Tyson returned to the ring last month for a shock showdown with Jake Paul[/caption] The boxing legend suffered a decision defeat in the eight-rounder but refused to rule out fighting again[/caption]Tyson looked every bit his 58 years as he suffered a unanimous decision defeat in his first pro fight in nearly 20 YEARS but refused to rule out another ring return.
But wife Lakiha Spicer has made it crystal clear to the boxing legend that he WON’T be lacing up his gloves again.
Tyson’s son, Amir, told SecondsOut: “I think he’s done.
“My stepmom, she’s saying he’s done and they’re a team. That’s husband-and-wife stuff.”
Amir would love to tell his old man to call it a day but insists his heartfelt pleas would fall on deaf ears.
In an exclusive interview with SunSport, he said: “That chat would be a waste of time! He is his own man.
“If I say too much he’d only tell me to shut up and remind me I’m not his dad.
“I can say my part but he is the grown-up and he will do whatever he wants.

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson round-by-round
MIKE TYSON's long-awaited return to the ring didn't have the fairytale ending fight fans dreamed of.
SunSport’s boxing expert Wally Downes Jr recaps one of the drabbest and most forgettable nights in boxing history.
And he didn’t hold back, issuing a scathing assessment of social media sensation Jake Paul.
Round One
Paul says “I love you, Mike” just before the opening bell sounds. He quickly runs away and holds the boxing legend.
Tyson draws a big reaction from the crowd as he lands a jab and a good right hand.
Verdict: 10-9 Tyson
Round Two
Paul ran away in the opener and held – just like we thought he would.
Tommy Fury had it first and now Mike Tyson. It’s clever because Tyson will tire. Paul tags Tyson’s body with a straight right.
Tyson looks spent now. 180 seconds in and the fight looks over.
Verdict: 10-9 Tyson
Round Three
The legend cannot even keep his gumshield in. As expected it’s a waste of time. Paul has run away until the 58-year-old has tired.
Shooting ducks in a barrel now. Tyson might get hurt here. Paul lands a couple of clumsy shots and Tyson wobbles backwards.
Tragic after three.
Verdict: 10-9 Paul
Round Four
This is proper rubbish. The crowd are bored and boos are being heard.
This is just two tired big lumps going at it. One a legend, one a promoter.
Verdict 10-9 Paul
Round Five
Paul jabs the body and aims right for the head and another one-two clips the icon.
Tyson cannot keep his mouthpiece in, he is gasping for air. Paul lands a left hook but then so does Tyson.
Verdict 10-9 Paul
Round Six
Thank God these weren’t three-minute rounds. We are getting about four punches per round.
Tyson is gasping in the air but replays show a left hook did graze Paul’s beard.
Verdict 10-9 Paul
Round Seven
Tyson slips a jab and tries an uppercut. The commentator admits it has been a “sad” spectacle.
The AT&T stadium has been utterly stunk out. Paul is looking just as tired as Tyson.
Verdict 10-9 Paul
Round Eight
Go back to YouTube, Jake. You’re an excellent conman. But you’ve never been a boxer.
The Judges decide: 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73. I’m glad Tyson gets paid and has stayed safe.
But what a laughable performance from Paul to add to his stinker with Tommy Fury.
Verdict 10-9 Paul
SunSport’s final scorecard – 78-74 for Jake Paul

“I’ll chip in and say, ‘That was a great LAST fight, leave it at that.’
“But if he wants to do it then nobody is going to stop him, because he loves it.”
Amir was proud as punch to see his old man get back in the ring, despite having serious fears for his safety.
“I was very proud,” he said. “But yes of course I was worried.
“I knew he wasn’t going to get knocked down or out because he can take those punches.
“But, at the same, Jake is younger, faster and bigger – when you get older your cardio diminishes.
“But he did it better than any 58-year-old, he went the distance and I am proud as hell of what he did. It was like a Rocky XI moment.
“Most athletes finish and retire into the sunset, but for him to remain this relevant, for so many generations, it shows you everything.
“I am very proud.”
