3 weeks agoLatest NewsComments Off on Mazda CX-80 is 7-seat SUV with peachy engine & top notch cabin – but price means it may be best to wait
WE gave the Mazda CX-60 a love bomb. Now the bigger CX-80 has just turned up – and it’s every bit as good, if not better.
Here are seven things you need to know.
1.Take a CX-60, stretch it, add a third row of seats to make it a seven-seater and, ta-dah, that’s the CX-80.
2. Same engines as a CX-60 – the best one being a peachy 3.3-litre straight-six diesel with 254hp. Buckets of low-down torque. Ultra-clean. London to Inverness in one go.
3.Mazda also has a 2.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid which is 327hp and can do up to 38 miles as an EV. Both have the added assurance of all-wheel drive.
4. Top-notch cabin. Lots of luxury. Lots of kit. Big lettering on the infotainment screen. People of a certain age will appreciate that.
Proper controls for things we use most. Head-up display. Skinny steering wheel. Squishy elbow rests.
Rear doors open almost 90 degrees with easy access to the third row.
Drink holders and charging ports galore. All things that please.
5. Even more luxurious is the six-seat version with two captain’s chairs in the middle.
6. Not only does the longer wheelbase increase cabin space, it also improves ride quality.
Stick with the standard 18in wheels. Big wheels look nice but smaller wheels ride better on our lumpy roads.
7. Finally, price. £49k for the hybrid, £51k for the diesel, a £3,500 jump from the equivalent CX-60.
We really like the CX-80 but we’ll like it even more when it’s three years old and half the price.

The bonnet bulges like Santa’s sack because it houses a blockbuster 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 that thumps out 830 horses and revs to 9,500rpm[/caption]
When Lewis clocked in at Ferrari on Monday morning, I’d like to think he was straight on the blower for one of these.
Naked V12. Wrapped in a polarising designer suit. Right up his street.
Now the Italians pronounce 12Cilindri as Dodici Cilindri. Doe-dee-chee. Or don’t-ditch-it.
Thankfully, I didn’t. But I did give it a damned good thrashing at Goodyear’s private test track.
The bonnet bulges like Santa’s sack because it houses a blockbuster 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 that thumps out 830 horses and revs to 9,500rpm.
Eighty per cent of torque is available from 2,500rpm. You can imagine the noise.
You can imagine the speed.
You can imagine the smell of everything getting hot.
Ten out of ten. No notes. Actually, scratch that, dodici out of 10. No notes. The late great Enzo Ferrari once said: “When you buy a Ferrari, you pay for the engine and I will give the rest of the car free.”
He’d like 12Cilindri.
It’s the only car in the world that looks as good with its bonnet open as it does closed.
Brakes are like anchors
Take a moment to drink in its beauty.
As you would expect from Ferrari, there’s all sorts of trick aero and F1 wizardry going on here to keep things shiny side up.
Yet the silhouette of this two-seat berlinetta is simple and sophisticated. Basically, 12Cilindri succeeds the 812 Superfast. But it’s better.
The aluminium spaceframe chassis is stiffer. The wheelbase is a smidge shorter. Gear shifts are quicker.
The brakes are like anchors. It needs them.
You could pay extra for a Burmester sound system. But that would be silly. That howling V12 is the only music you need.
It has four-wheel steering and something very Ferrari called Slide Slip Control 8.0 which measures grip levels, even on snotty roads in normal use — and not just on the limit.
Now you’re probably thinking race-bred driving thrills equals chiropractor on speed dial.
Actually, no. The cockpit is surprisingly comfy with massaging and ventilated seats to soothe your bones.
The big glass roof adds to the feeling of space.
Three digital screens carry loads of technology including a letterbox-shaped co-driver’s display.

When Lewis Hamilton clocked in at Ferrari on Monday morning for his new F1 job, I’d like to think he was straight on the blower for one of these[/caption]
But there’s more fun to be had behind the tiller. We like the chunky gearshift paddles. We like the glow-up rev lights on the steering wheel. We like the red F1-style switch to adjust the suspension and attack mode settings.
You could pay extra for a Burmester sound system. But that would be silly. That howling V12 is the only music you need.
To conclude, then. The £336k Ferrari 12Cilindri is Ferrari at its brilliant best.

ARSENAL defeated Monaco 3-0 in a one-sided clash as the Gunners leapt up to third in the Champions League table.
Bukayo Saka fired the Gunners ahead after a stunning move which was kicked off by 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly, who started at left-back.
Saka then doubled Arsenal’s lead with 15 minutes to play, capitalising on a horror Monaco defensive error in their own box.
Kai Havertz appeared to knock home the Gunners’ third after connecting with Saka’s shot to put the game out of the French side’s reach – but it was later ruled as a Thilo Kehrer own goal with the defender having the final touch.

STAR actor Paul Mescal is selling his custom-made designer clothes on a second-hand fashion website.
The Aftersun actor has teamed up with Vinted to sell some high-end pieces from his closet that he wore during his recent Gladiator II promotions.

Paul Mescal’s Hades wool cardigan is up for grabs[/caption]
Fans have the option to choose from his knitwear items, vintage T-shirt and a pair of high-end Jimmy Choo boots.
And the money raised from the collection – valued at more than £3,000 – will be donated to an Irish charity called Pieta.
Items include a Hades wool cardigan for £285, a custom hand-painted silk knit jumper by the Scottish knitwear and some demin jeans from ELV.
A blue-and-white vintage T-shirt will also be included in the collection
And for £800, fans can buy a Jimmy Choo black leather boots that Mescal was seen wearing during the promotions.
However, it is unclear if the cloths have been washed after the actor wore them.
Felicity Kay, Mescal’s stylist, told Mail Online: “Paul has always had a strong connection to vintage and pre-loved fashion. He’s often eager to rewear pieces we’ve styled before or items from his own wardrobe.
“Partnering with Vinted for Paul’s Gladiator II promotion tour made perfect sense as it allowed us to delve deep into his love for second-hand clothes.
“But we were equally both excited about finding a way to give the clothes he wore during his tour a second life, so selling them on Vinted felt like the perfect fit, especially with the added bonus of supporting a good cause.”
The items will be available to purchase from 16 December for Vinted members in the UK.
The star and her dancers wore them last year at rehearsals in Manchester, then donated them to a Children’s Air Ambulance shop.
Fan Alex Fisher said: “I had to get a boa and the skirt.
“The skirt feels so expensive because of all of the details with the safety pins, I’ve never seen anything like it in a charity shop.
“I just stumbled upon the rack and thought it was so cool.
“I am a big music fan and it felt bizarre to see clothes from Madonna’s tour in a Salford charity shop.
“A member of staff told me that they had some more and even weirder items from the tour in the back which they had yet to put out, and there are videos of Madonna herself wearing some of the pieces.”
He is best known for his work on her 2005 smash hit album Confessions On A Dance Floor, which featured the No1 hit Hung Up.
They reconnected last year when he worked as the musical director on her critically acclaimed Celebration Tour.

SHAUN GOATER has taken charge of Aston Villa’s women’s side following the sacking of Robert de Pauw.
The Manchester City legend, 54, is managing the team in the interim following the departure of the Holland-born coach.
Shaun Goater was a Man City player and coach, now he’s been promoted to interim women’s boss at Villa after being assistant head coach[/caption]
Dutchman Robert de Pauw has been sacked by Aston Villa[/caption]
And the former striker, who scored more than a hundred times for the Cityzens, oversaw his first game at the helm when Villa hosted Charlton in the Women’s League Cup on Wednesday night.
De Pauw‘s exit, announced by the club yesterday, came three days after the Villans fell to a fifth loss in nine top-flight games.
The Dutchman is alleged to have made unprofessional remarks to players, including comments about their appearance.
According to The Guardian concerns were raised in-house about the claims which the club are reported to have looked into.
The Sun has contacted Villa for comment on those claims.
The Dutch coach left the club “with immediate effect” after just six months at the helm.
Just 24 hours earlier the ex-Bayer Leverkusen chief posted what many regarded as a cryptic message on LinkedIn.
De Pauw wrote: “Finding the balance between the short term and long term in the best interest for the team and club is not an easy thing. It comes with big sacrifices.”
“You need the backing of the club if you want the team to go from average, to good, to better, to top.
“This reselecting and developing of a team is a necessary thing to do to make these steps. I did this in Leverkusen the past two seasons selecting on football, behaviour and characteristics of the players.
“I never shy away from difficult decisions and I will certainly not win the popularity contests. Because you can never satisfy everyone.
“But always keeping standards high to get the best out of the team and each other.”
Following a promising pre-season that included a friendly win against Man City, the Villans have endured a poor start to this season.
The team were trounced 4-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday and have notched just ONE win in the WSL so far this term.
Their dismal run has left them fourth from bottom and just one point above bottom-placed Crystal Palace before their final WSL game this year on Sunday.
The team are due to host West Ham who are ninth with eight points and also battling to avoid the drop.
De Pauw’s departure was announced in a brief written statement published on their web site.
They say Goater will be in charge of their women’s squad “until a new manager is appointed and will be supported by the wider coaching team”.
The former Bermuda international joined Villa as assistant women’s team head coach in August.
Before then Goater had worked as an assistant to Cityzens women’s side gaffer Gareth Taylor from April last year to June until this summer.
3 weeks agoLatest NewsComments Off on Three ways to cut down on Christmas costs with DIY greeting cards
GREETING cards are a lovely gesture at Christmas – and they’re even better with a personal touch.
If you want to send a special note this festive season, here’s how to keep costs down . . .
GET PERSONAL: Many retailers have bulk offers on personalised cards, where you can add a photo and write a tailored message.
A5 cards start at £2.99 each on cardfactory.co.uk, but you get 50 per cent off when buying four or more, which works out at £5.98 for four. Note that you’ll also need to pay postage (£2.70 for four).
At vistaprint.co.uk, you can add your own photo to basic designs, plus a personalised message, for as little as 60p per card.
Alternatively, if you bulk buy up to 50, the cost is 56p each. Postage for standard delivery is £5.50 if you are spending less than £40.
DIY DESIGNS: Craft your own cards and indulge in some creativity. A pack of 50 plain white cards with envelopes is £7.50 from Hobbycraft, or buy two packs and get 100 cards for £10.
Keep it simple if you’re planning on making a lot. Look for spare materials you have at home, such as ribbon or coloured paper. Two buttons, for example, can be stacked with a scarf and hat to give the impression of a snowman.
KID CRAFTS: If you’ve got little ones, making Christmas cards using their foot or hand prints is a very sweet send. Plus you’ll always have the memory of how little they once were.
A small footprint in brown paint can be the basis of a reindeer head — just draw antlers out the top and a big red nose on the bottom. There are loads more ideas on social media.
Or keep the kids entertained by getting them to make up some cards for you.
Draw a simple outline of a Christmas tree in black marker and they can decorate it as they like, perhaps by dipping their fingers in paint to create baubles.
