Why isn’t the ‘Voice of Darts’ Russ Bray refereeing at the World Darts Championship 2025?
RUSS BRAY’S vocal prowess is synonymous with the game of darts – so much so that other referees openly imitate the inflexion of his iconic delivery.
But the “VOICE of Darts” will NOT be reffing the PDC World Darts Championship for the first time in THREE DECADES — here we take a look at why.
Russ Bray is the most famous darts caller of all-time but will not be at this years World Darts Championship[/caption] He’s presided over some of the biggest moments in the history of the sport, including 17 nine-darters[/caption]Who is Russ Bray?
Russ Bray was born on June 22, 1957, in South Ockendon, Essex.
He is the most renowned darts referee the game has ever seen, often referred to as the “Voice of Darts”.
His career in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) spanned over 28 years.
Russ became famous for his distinctive gravelly voice and trademark calls, including the classic: “Ooooonnne hundred and eight-y!”
He began refereeing in 1993, before officially joining the PDC in 1996.
Career highlights
During his illustrious career, Russ has been an integral part of some of darts’ biggest moments:
- Refereeing 17 televised nine-darters
- Calling the first televised perfect leg in the PDC, achieved by Phil Taylor in 2002
- Calling Michael van Gerwen‘s 17 perfect darts at the 2014 World Championship
- Officiating 28 PDC World Championship finals, including the highly regarded 2007 final between Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld
- Being inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame in 2024
Why isn’t Russ Bray reffing the PDC Darts Championship 2025?
Russ is not officiating at the PDC World Darts Championship 2025 because he has retired from full-time refereeing in the UK.
His decision to step down came in January 2024 as he turned 66 — coinciding with his eligibility for an old-age pension.
The now 67-year-old ref expressed that he felt it was the right time to retire, noting that there are talented young referees coming through the ranks.
His iconic voice can, however, still be heard during select World Series events.
He said: “I’ve had a magnificent career so far, and this game has given me so many opportunities and memories.
“When you’re part of the game, you’re going with the flow, with the rollercoaster, but when you look at the development of the sport since I joined the PDC in 1996, the difference is incredible.
“It’s a global game now. When you’re refereeing on the PDC Asian Tour in Mongolia, and on the World Series [stage] in Australia, you do have to pinch yourself sometimes.
“I’m an old-age pensioner now. We have some cracking youngsters [referees] coming through, so for me personally, I think it’s the right time.”
I’ve had a magnificent career

And on his career highlight, Russ added: “The most special moment for me was the 2007 World Championship final between Phil [Taylor] and Barney [Raymond van Barneveld], which is still said to be the greatest final ever.
“I was fortunate enough to call that final and that was absolutely immense.
“John Part beating Phil in 2003 was another amazing achievement, and another milestone.”
Final appearance
Russ’ last televised ranking match as a referee was at the PDC World Darts Championship final on January 3, 2024.
Russ Bray speaks with Luke Littler during his last match before retiring — the World Darts Championship 2024 final between Luke Littler and Luke Humphries[/caption]And what a match to bow out on — Luke Humphries’ remarkable 7-4 victory over teen sensation Luke Littler.
The event at Alexandra Palace marked Russ’ 28th and final World Championship behind the mic, providing a fitting end to his refereeing career at the sport’s flagship tournament.
New role
While Bray has retired from full-time refereeing, he is not leaving the darts world entirely.
As well as refereeing select matches abroad, the PDC created a new role specifically for him as an ambassador, which he took up in 2024.
This position has allowed Russ to continue contributing to the sport he loves and has been a big part of for over four decades.
He has since been seen on the likes of Sky Sports News analysing darts and speaking about his career.
All About Darts
Russ’ book titled All About Darts: The ultimate guide to the world’s greatest sport was released on November 7, 2024.
The book provides an intimate look into his remarkable 28-year career as a professional darts referee, offering behind-the-scenes insights into the sport’s most iconic moments.
Russ shares personal stories about working with legendary players, detailing his journey from a young referee to becoming the most recognisable voice in professional darts.
The autobiography chronicles his experiences, challenges and memorable matches, giving fans a comprehensive understanding of his significant contribution to the sport.

While Malik was convicted of causing or allowing her death.
The trial at the Old Bailey heard that the child died after years of horrific abuse, including being burned, bitten and beaten.
After the verdicts, police released videos showing all three defendants being arrested on the flight in September 13 last year.
The trio arrived at Gatwick after spending nearly five weeks on the run in Pakistan and were immediately taken off the plane by British cops.
The footage shows officers approaching the trio while they are still seated.
They are then cuffed and led off the plane.
Former Premier League striker now living completely new life as a hairdresser with customers not even recognising him
FORMER Premier League striker Danny Hoesen has swapped shots for scissors… by becoming a HAIRDRESSER.
The Dutch ace spent four years with Fulham after a 2008 move from Fortuna Sittard.
The former forward now works as a hairdresser[/caption]Hoesen was named as a sub for their top-flight clash with Sunderland in 2011, and loaned out to Sittard and Finns HJK.
He went on to win the Eredivisie title with Ajax in 2013, and the Dutch FA Cup with Groningen two years later.
The frontman moved on to US clubs San Jose Earthquakes and Austin FC, and retired after a spell with Dutch side Emmen last year.
Hoesen, 33, has now begun a new career in Utrecht barbershop Maesons.
He told Voetbal International: “It’s not every day that a former professional footballer goes to work in a hairdresser’s.
“But I have never had such a big ego that I think I’m too big to do anything different.
“Why should I feel superior just because by chance I can kick a ball well?
“I lived in a bubble all the time while I was a footballer. Players would buy designer clothes just to show they could afford them.

“These days I’ll maybe chat with an airline pilot, then a lawyer, and then someone who’s travelled the world. Not bad, eh?
“Customers always want to ask about players I appeared alongside, and talk about my goal for Ajax against Barcelona in the Champions League.
“That makes me a bit uncomfortable – everyone made such a big deal of it.
“But sometimes I’ll have a good conversation with someone, and can tell they have no idea who I am. That is fine too.”
Hoesen also insisted his new employers could give Erik ten Hag a boost in his search for a new job after being sacked by Manchester United.
He told De Telegraaf: “We could give Ten Hag a smart beard.”

C0RONATION Street has significantly changed an iconic scene that has left fans stunned.
It went down as one of the ITV soap’s greatest moments when evil killer Richard Hillman, played by Brian Capron, maniacally drove his car into a canal in a suicide bid – with the Platts inside.
Brian Capron played the villainous Richard Hillman, aka ‘Tricky Dicky’, from Coronation Street.[/caption] Richard Hillman confesses all to a terrified Gail[/caption] Serial killer Richard Hillman drove the a car with Gail and her children bound and gagged into the canal.[/caption]But instead of killing his wife, Gail (Helen Worth), Richard himself met an untimely death 21 years ago, and the Platts were spared.
However, on the soap grapevine, rumours are circulating that fans will be in for a treat this Christmas, as his ghost is back to haunt Gail before she exits, too.
The news prompted eagle-eyed fans to revisit the iconic scenes available to stream in the digital age.
But many who watched the first time around were stunned to find that instead of the Wannadies song, the clip has the backing track of another noughties classic, You’re Gorgeous, by Babybird.
This caused an outrage on X, with fans saying: “What the heck is this? ITVX version of Hillman’s final episode has changed the music that plays as they’re driving towards the canal!
“The You And Me song is one of the things that makes this moment so iconic!”
A second viewer chimed in with: “Yeah, that was really strange. They cut out Gail using the word ‘pervert’ and then a small section of the fight because of it.
“But over the last 3 weeks we’ve had Danny Baldwin’s ex-wife Carol calling him a ‘b****d’ on at least three occasions, and that’s aired unedited at 3pm.”
Another added: “I’ve noticed a few things that have been edited or changed; they cut dialogue from the infamous scrap between Gail & Eileen, for instance, when it aired on Classic Corrie earlier this year.”
Richard was a criminal posing as an entrepreneur who conned residents out of their savings, selling dodgy shares.
He turned into “Norman Bates with a suitcase” when Gail sussed him out, as he kidnapped her and tried to kill her, her son David and daughter Sarah.
Gail has always been unlucky in love, and now, after 50 years on the cobbles, actress Helen Worth is retiring from Corrie – just as Gail is about to marry for the seventh and final time.
The Sun Online revealed that she would finally bid farewell to the soap on Christmas Day.
She has been ill in hospital and her children have been planning on how to spend Jesse’s secret stash of cash.
When she finds out about their plotting she becomes upset and drifts in and out of sleep.
Until an unexpected visitor arrives.
Gail's biggest Corrie storylines
Over the years the character of Gail Platt has been the centre of several major plots.
Here we take a look back over actress Helen Worth’s biggest storylines:
Teenage daughter’s pregnancy
One of Gail’s most controversial storylines was in 1999.
It came when her 13-year-old daughter Sarah became pregnant.
Multiple marriages
Gail holds the record for the series’ most married female character.
She has been wed a whopping six times, each one worse the last.
Married to a serial killer
One of Gail’s multiple marriages saw her wed Richard Hillman, who turned out to be a serial killer.
At the climax of the storyline, 19 million fans tuned in to watch Hillman drive his wife and her family into a canal.
Scrapping on The Street
Gail has proved over the years she can’t resist a good scrap.
Her most memorable bust-up saw her attack Eileen Grimshaw on the cobbles in 2004 while in her dressing gown.
Jail bird
In 2010, Gail found herself wrongly banged up in jail.
She was wrongfully arrested for murdering her 4th husband Joe McIntyre.
Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
My parents were both paedophiles, my mum’s partner said I couldn’t ‘grow up frigid’ so made us watch them have sex
A WOMAN has revealed the horrific abuse she went through as a child, claiming her parents knew about it the whole time.
Lisa Plumb, from Phoenix, Arizona, bravely opens up about the traumatic events and how she healed.
Lisa was a victim of sexual abuse for as long as she can remember[/caption] She opened up about her childhood being surrounded by paedophiles[/caption]She sat down to discuss how she was regularly passed around to older men from at the least the age of five and was even forced to watch her mum have sex.
Lisa says her parents looked like something from a 1950s magazine, put together, innocent and safe but they were anything but.
At the age of five, she recalls her mum attempted suicide as she and her dad divorced.
For a while, Lisa’s grandmother looked after the children while her mum went away, but when she came back she was a single woman ready to party.
“A single mother with issues is a paedophile magnet. And that’s exactly what my mother was,” she said.
She recalled the first time it happened was when a man had offered to help her mum out by looking after her and her siblings while she was at work.
During that time he began to molest Lisa and told her that her mum would die if she told anyone.
Being just five, Lisa didn’t even have the vocabulary to discuss what he was doing to her or understand it – but when her sister walked in on the abuse she was quick to tell their father.
Unfortunately, it seemed he couldn’t care less as Lisa recalls: “When my father came over, he said, Lisa, ‘I understand that **** molested you. And just don’t make a big deal about it.'”
Once her mum called it off, she got a new boyfriend who began to assault Lisa as well.
“He felt that it was his moral obligation to raise us girls to not be frigid when we grew up,” she adds.
“I remember him telling me that, like, you know, I don’t want you to be frigid when you get older.”
He first started by taking the whole family to nudist camps and beaches which Lisa called a ‘paedophile magnet.’
Horrifically, he decided that wasn’t enough and decided to bring Lisa into the bedroom to watch him and her mother have sex.
She was thankful when the relationship finally ended, but it wasn’t the end of Lisa’s abuse[/caption]Sexual abuse in numbers
669,000 adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales every year
- 1 in 5 women (8m) in the UK have been sexually abused
- 1 in 6 men (5m) in the UK have been sexually abused
- 1 in 20 children in the UK have been sexually abused
Sexual abuse has been attributed to:
- 15% of all suicides in the UK
- 11% of all common mental health disorders in the UK
- 7% of alcohol dependence disorders
- 10% of drug dependence disorders
- 15% of eating disorders
- 17% of post-traumatic stress disorders

The relationship didn’t last, and Lisa was grateful he was out of their lives.
Life seemed to get better from the age of nine when her step-dad came onto the scene, she said he was the only parent to really care about her before he and her mum split when she was 12.
But not long after, her mum decided to send her and her siblings away for the weekend – with a couple she barely knew.
The couple were members of the same nudist camp she went to as a child, and Lisa was adamant she didn’t want to go.
Despite this, her mum made her and she was put through hell again.
The couple plied Lisa with cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana in an attempt to get Lisa to sleep with them.
While she recalls sexual abuse taking place, she says they didn’t have sex as he wanted Lisa to ask for it, something she never wanted to do.
Years later, while at school, Lisa was interviewed by police about the couple and she confirmed the two were paedophiles.
She was then moved to sheltered living for a few months before being placed back in her mum’s care.
She recalled her mum calling her a ‘s**t’ and said her dad looked down on her for getting someone arrested for sexual abuse.
Lisa explained: “If you want to have sex with a man, a woman, a child, that’s fine, that’s like the religion that he lived in. That I might be responsible for somebody getting busted for that, definitely made him look down on me more.”
Eventually, Lisa was able to get away, she found religion, got sober and met her husband and had children.
But when the police called her up years later to testify against one of her abusers, the bottled-up emotions poured out of Lisa.
She decided the hurt was no longer hers to carry and decided to confront each abuser – including her dad.
When he came over she told him about the horrific abuse she had endured and his response was shocking.
“He’s like, wow, Lisa, you had quite an extensive sex life. And I was offended and hurt,” she recalled
“And then before I had a chance to say anything, he said, and children under the age of three don’t remember anything.”
She later revealed that her father was a teacher and she knew he had molested young boys as a victim came forward to speak to her.
Asked if she thought her parents were both paedophiles, Lisa quickly responded ‘yes.’
Now, Lisa has focused on her own family with her husband as she navigates the trauma she has been through.
She is also a therapist specialising in children and marriages to help others.
The interview conducted by Soft White Underbelly went viral with over 4.9 million views.
People were quick to praise Lisa’s bravery in the comments section.
One person wrote: “Imagine being treated this way your entire life. It is a miracle she grew up to be so kind and dignified.”
Another commented: “This woman is incredibly strong. I can’t imagine describing all those horrific events with a calm tone.”
“Never in this life did I envision this level of child sexual abuse in the presence of their parent. Extremely disturbing! Lisa, I applaud your courage and resilience,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “It’s insane how she was just surrounded by monsters. Not a single responsible and compassionate adult in her life for so many years. Heartbreaking. I hope she can find peace.”
