Ex-England star, 58, takes up completely new sport and wins promotion with fellow Three Lions ace convinced to play too
AFTER sharing the pitch with David Beckham and earning 23 caps for England, a former Three Lions player is shining in a new sport.
Former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn is now a local cricket star, winning promotion to the Yorkshire Premier League North last year.
Billed as a more-than-handy wicketkeeper, Martyn took up cricket alongside fellow former England stopper Paul Robinson at Knaresborough Club, in North Yorkshire.
Despite Robinson replacing Martyn as Leed United’s No.1 in 2002, the pair are the best of pals and returned to a different kind of pitch 20 years later.
Martyn, 58, told the England and Wales Cricket Board: “I saw him (Robinson) somewhere, and he asked what I was doing.
“I told him I was playing cricket at Knaresborough, which is where he lives. His lad, Jack, is actually in the Yorkshire setup – probably around under-12s or 13s.
“I said, ‘Look, you get the camaraderie we had in football dressing rooms, it’s good exercise, come and play a bit yourself’.
“But he has a lot of football engagements, like punditry in the Middle East.
“He’s not available much, but when he is we like to get him in. We actually played a game at Dringhouses away about two seasons ago.
“It was the first game we played together, and there were some Leeds fans in their team. They couldn’t believe it.”
FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS
Martyn came through the Football League with Bristol Rovers, before becoming the first £1million goalkeeper in British football when he signed for Crystal Palace in 1989.
He start both games in iconic 1990 FA Cup final, when Palace forced a replay after holding Sir Alex Ferguson‘s Man Utd to 3-3 draw at Old Wembley.
United would go on to win the replay 1-0 thanks to Lee Martin’s goal from left-back.
Martyn then moved to Leeds and enjoyed their most successful spell in recent memory, before moving to Everton until retirement in 2006.
And he was voted as part of Leeds United’s greatest team in 2006 and made the semi-final of the Champions League in the 2000-2001 season.
Seven years ago, Martyn played football with the current England cricket team.
In 2017, he was invited to join the team in their warm-up ahead of a Test against the West Indies by Jonny Bairstow.
He previously told the BBC: “I always preferred cricket, but I was slightly better at football.
“But I had to play outfield – though I was allowed to keep wicket for the school cricket team.
“Once I turned professional the cricket had to stop. I couldn’t risk breaking a finger. I would get into a bit of trouble if I did that.
‘It started at school. It was rugby in the winter, then football and cricket. I really enjoyed playing, at 14 joined my local club and went from there.
“You get into that changing room as a 14 year old and row up pretty quickly. There was a lot of fun to be had and we loved the competition of it.”
He has previously spoken of his hope that more players from Cornwall would go onto play for England.
I’m the coupon kid – a hidden code trick will mean you never miss out on deals at Tesco
ONE crafty customers has revealed a hidden code trick that lets shoppers to make the most out of their deals.
For those who keep an eye on supermarket offers, this sneaky hack can tell you the right time to take advantage of a bargain.
Jordon Cox, known as the Coupon Kid, explained that the code found under deals at retailers aren’t just random numbers.
In a video posted on Instagram he explains what to look for under the Clubcard prices.
He said: “This secret code at Tesco might save you money.
“The last two numbers are the day, the middle two are the month, and the first two are the year of when the deal expires.
“If it’s an item you buy regularly, you’ll now know when to stock up before the price goes up.”
Now when a Clubcard deal is especially tempting, you will know whether you can find it in store the next day.
Shoppers were thrilled with the the supermarket hack and quickly took to the comments.
One user wrote: “I stocked up with five Freddos the other week because the deal expired the next day.
“It’s got to be done.”
Another added: “Great tip, thank you.”
A third shopper commented: “Love this.”
Jordon has crowned himself “Britain’s Coupon King” and offers tips about making the most out of your cash.
Tesco’s Clubcard system allows supermarket shoppers a different price to those who aren’t signed up to a Clubcard.
Big discounts are offered regularly to Clubcard holder and the offers apply to a wide range of products.
Usually the reduced prices are shown as a big yellow sticker next to the original price.
When using the Clubcard you’re also able to save up points as you shop which can make you savings in the future.
Each time you spend £1 in a Tesco shop, either in person or online, you are allocated one Clubcard point.
One point is the equivalent to one penny, so eventually these points will tot up and turn into vouchers.
You can spend these vouchers in store or exchange them for discounts with “rewards partner.”
How to save money on your supermarket shop
THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.
You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.
If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.
Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.
Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.
This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.
Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.
For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.
If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.
Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.
Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall reveals secret ‘special treatment’ on I’m A Celeb in never-shown-on-camera moments
CORONATION Street actor Alan Halsall has admitted that he did receive special treatment from I’m A Celeb bosses in scenes that were never addressed on-camera.
The star, famed for his role as Tyrone Dobbs on the ITV soap opera, revealed that there was a huge difference for him when it came to meal times on the hit reality programme.
In news that could come as a shock to fans, Alan was actually eating entirely different food provided to him by producers during the camp’s evening meal.
Whilst his fellow celebs were all chewing down on the same meal, Alan was allowed to tuck into something wholly different.
As a result of his vegetarian status, Alan revealed on Instagram that his meal times were different to that of his jungle pals.
With the cast always provided with mean on-screen, one of Alan’s followers questioned whether he had been forced to give up his vegetarian ways.
They said: “Did you give up being veggie whilst you were in the jungle?”
Alan then clarified: “No they send a veggie equivalent.”
He then followed up to add: “Generally something very bland, plain tofu… etc.”
None of Alan’s veggie meals were seen on-screen with his eating habits unaddressed on the programme.
Following his exit from the jungle, Alan appeared to hint at a feud with his co-star Dean McCullough as he appeared to suggest he was “performing” for the cameras.
During an interview on ITV2 spin-off show, Unpacked, host Sam Thompson asked Alan if there were any “performers” in the camp.
Hinting at a feud, the Coronation Street star said: “Dean! He’s got a story written all over his face.
“It’s ridiculous!”
During their time in camp, Dean was seen snapping at Alan.
It came after the soap star woke up the DJ to ask him to help with chores.

Stunning newly single Love Islander lined up for All Stars after heartbreaking split from long-term boyfriend
NEWLY-SINGLE Love Island star Tanya Manhenga is being lined up for All Stars after her shock split from Shaq Muhammad.
The pair, who met on the ITV2 dating show in 2023, decided to call it quits in August after a year together.
The Love Island beauty split from co-star boyfriend Shaq Muhammad in August[/caption]But it looks like Tanya, 24, is ready to put her split behind her and return to the villa for a second chance at finding love.
A source told The Sun: “It’s very early talks but Tanya is being lined up for a return to the villa.
“She genuinely wants to find love and if she can do it once, she can do it twice.”
The Sun have approached ITV for comment.
Tanya looks like she’s already moved on with a string of glamourous snaps and holiday photos on Instagram.
During the summer, the pair released a joint statement which read: “Hi guys, just want to say unfortunately me and Shaq are no longer together and have parted ways.
“We wish each other the best and can’t thank you enough for loving us together until now! Thank you.”
In July fans spotted that Tanya had deleted most of the pictures of Shaq from her Instagram and the pair later unfollowed each other.
Rumours started to swirl that the couple, who met on the show in 2023, had split but an insider told us they were working hard to salvage things.
The source said at the time: “Tanya has made it clear to her friends that she is still with Shaq.
“Yes, she has unfollowed him and the pair did have a huge argument, but it’s nothing they can’t fix.”
However, their issues were too much to overcome.
Tanya’s decision to unfollow Shaq came after he jetted off on a lads’ holiday with fellow Love Island star Dami Hope.
“Tanya was not happy about some of Shaq’s behaviour on holiday. His communication really wasn’t what it should have been,” the insider said.
“He was seen looking very close to another girl – nothing was going on it but it looked bad.
“She blames Dami for egging him on to be a bit silly and for also sharing the picture.
“It’s pretty much forgiven now and Shaq even spent the weekend with Tanya’s family.”
Shaq also made his feelings clear on the situation with a post on Instagram that read: “Wife. Full stop.”
The pair met on the winter edition of Love Island last year, and came in fourth place.
Despite claiming to be in love with Shaq, who she’d been coupled up with from the start, Tanya had a fling with Casa bombshell Martin Akinola, and brought him back to the villa.
Tanya later said she was shocked by the public’s reaction, but didn’t regret straying – claiming it made her realise it was Shaq she wanted.
She said: “It’s actually a good thing I did because when we came back I realised no, this is not for me.
“I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal outside. I was more worried about the inside.
“I was like, ‘Are these people going to hate me when I get back?’ But I had to own it. Not everyone is going to like everything you’re going to choose.
“But I thought, I’m sorry but how can you afford to go to Casa Amor and not bring him back, because now I’m just going to be thinking, what if?
“In my head I thought, I’ll take Martin back and see if it goes anywhere, but still get to know Shaq. But with people’s feelings, that’s not how it works.”
After leaving the villa, Shaq defended his girl and insisted she was given a villain edit.
Earlier this year they even sparked rumours they were engaged after a video showed the hunk getting down on one knee.
Meta DOWN – platform hit by global outage as thousands of users report Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp issues
META is currently experiencing a major global outage with thousands of users reporting Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp issues.
As noted by Downdetector, there has been a sharp increase in reported outages from users of these various services.
Meta is experiencing a global outage[/caption]The UK and parts of Europe, the US, Asia, Australia and South America are experiencing glitches.
Users complained about having issues with Instagram with 11,891 being registered by Downdetector since 6pm.
Facebook users are also complaining of outages, with issues and reports over much of the Eastern and Pacific coasts in the US.
According to Downdetector, Facebook outages were first reported at about 6pm today and have reached more than 100,000 complaints of an issue.
WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, saw numerous reported disruptions around the same time frame today.
The Downdetector website is reporting that there were more than 9,600 outage reports since 6pm.
Many users in the US were among those who made complaints, although the issue appears to have affected others around the globe.
Meta has not yet released an update or comment on the outage.
Users who try to load these services are encountering a variety of issues, both on the web and in their respective apps.
Problems being encountered include not being able to use the service’s app or website at all.
Users have also encountered not being able to post content on the service or seeing errors like all Facebook posts showing zero comments.
Others have managed to load the service but are finding it extremely slow and laggy.
There have been numerous instances of Meta and other social media apps having issues and reporting outages.
Earlier this year Facebook users suffered an outage after they were met with log in errors.
Mark Zuckerberg previously apologised after Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram went down for nearly six hours in October 2021.
During the outage, potentially billions of people were left without access to the social media tools they heavily relied on for communication with friends and family.
The repercussions also extended to Mark Zuckerberg at the time, with an estimated $6 billion (£4.4 billion) loss in his personal fortune as Facebook shares experienced a sharp decline.
Zuckerberg wrote in a post at the time: “Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are coming back online now.
“Sorry for the disruption today — I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about.”
