Four tips to help curb the cost of running essential appliances and keep bills down

THE cost of household bills has jumped this month as price rises hit across the board.

However, a few steps can help curb the cost of running essential appliances.

Here are our cash-saving apps to help you budget and keep track of your finances[/caption]

Follow these tips to save on energy and water bills . . .

STAND-OFF: Laptops, TVs and games consoles account for around six per cent of energy bills, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Simply switching devices off standby can save around £45 each year.

PUSH THE BUTTON: Washing machines, dishwashers and tumble driers are typically the most energy-hungry appliances.

Heading into summer you can dry more clothes outside.

On dishwasher and washing machines use the eco setting (normally at 30C), using less energy and water.

Helind Morais, of LG Electronics, said: “What some people don’t realise is that most items can be washed on an eco-cycle setting.

“Hot washes can be saved for items such as bedding, towels and sportswear, as these are most likely to host more bacteria. ”

HAVE YOUR FILL: Make sure that you wait to run both the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads rather than turning them on half full.

This should help cut down on the amount of cycles you are doing and therefore curb bills.

But be careful not to overload as this can mean clothes or crockery are not properly cleaned.

In a washing machine make sure there is space between the top of the load and the top of the drum — you should be able to fit a hand between.

FOOD PREP: Try to avoid overfilling your kettle, so you only use the water — and energy to heat it — you need.

An easy way to do this is to fill your cup with water and tip into the kettle before boiling.

Microwaves are more efficient than ovens for heating food up, while air fryers use less energy to cook meals.

‘Didn’t see it coming’ – Liam Lawson breaks silence on brutal Red Bull axe as replacement says ‘friendship has changed’

LIAM LAWSON says his brutal Red Bull axing after just two races came as a total shock.

The Kiwi driver, 23, was sacked by the team after a woeful start to the season which saw him knocked out at the first stage of all three qualifying sessions, failing to pick up a single point.

Lawson returned to Red Bull’s sister team Racing Bulls in a swap with 24-year-old Yuki Tsunoda ahead of this weekend’s Japanese GP.

He told Sky Sports: “It was definitely a shock, honestly. It’s not something that I saw coming,

“The discussions we were having weren’t really leaning in this direction, so it was definitely not something that I expected.”

Red Bull chose to promote Lawson from their junior squad Racing Bulls after just 11 Grand Prix appearances in two short spells across 2023 and 2024, despite Tsunoda having more experience.

Lawson added: “Obviously, I would have loved more time,

“We had a rocky testing. We had a rocky first weekend in Melbourne with practice. And then obviously China was a sprint.

“But obviously, it’s not my decision, so I’m here to make the most of this one.”

The team’s motorsport adviser Helmut Marko has since come out and said they “made a mistake” signing Lawson over Tsunoda.

Ahead of his Red Bull debut in Japan this weekend, Tsunoda has also opened up on the switch.

He admitted to the BBC: “We didn’t talk yet (Tsunoda and Lawson). I’m sure we’re going to be around anyway in Tokyo with the events so let’s see how it goes.

“Hopefully as a friendship we won’t make anything ruined or get damaged.

“I think I’ve felt it a little bit in the first half of the season this year, so probably we don’t have the friendship we used to have from when we were fighting in junior categories, but I think that’s natural, fighting for the seat and everything.

“I know he is a funny guy and I know how to make our relationship good but let’s see how it goes, it’s not easy.”

On how the move came about following the Chinese Grand Prix, Tsunoda added: “First call I got was from Christian (Horner), I heard expectations from him and also what kind of team dynamics they’re having. He said welcome to Red Bull Racing and he was excited.

“Be as close as possible to Max. Red Bull Racing are focused on Max scoring a Drivers’ Championship.

“He proved that he can be a world champion even though Red Bull is struggling.

“He also promised me in some situations that if I’m able to be in front of Max that he wouldn’t necessarily ask me to swap positions and make Max win.

“I’m sure it wouldn’t be easy anyway to beat Max straight away. I have to get used to the car. I’m very excited.”

Mystery as popular UK fun park suddenly closes after just two months over ‘unforeseen circumstances’

A POPULAR amusement park has mysteriously shut after just two months.

The shocking announcement blamed “unforeseen circumstances” for the closure.

Dingles Fun Park opened just off the A30 near Lifton in February this year.

But the family-friendly park will now permanently close, with its Pop Fest tribute festival also being cancelled.

Dingles was an exciting new addition for Devon when the park took over from Dingles Fairground Museum.

Ticket-holders will receive full refunds for what was expected to be a joyous event.

Known for its free entry, the park had plans to expand its token-based rides.

It is thought soft play areas were expected to be introduced alongside shows, festivals and tribute acts.

Locals have been left in the dark with one commenting on social media: “Wow, can’t believe this is closed already.”

Another put: “I had the best time there, the twister was great.”

Someone previously wrote: “I visited Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre in Devon today.

“Very interesting, informative and fun rides to go on!”

Regulars to the site will have been able to test out the variety of classic rides.

These include the Waltzer, Dodgems, Crazy Shake Miami and Twister.

The Fun House, Chair-o-Planes, trampolines, Helter Skelter, Teacups and Hook a Duck will likely be missed too.

Park manager Tom Ellis, an experienced showman who has helped run two amusement parks, previously told DevonLive: “It’s good to bring something back to the area after the loss of Flambards and Dairyland Farm Park in Cornwall”.

The statement released stated: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dingles Fun Park is now closed, the Pop Fest tribute festival will also be cancelled due to the park closure.

“All festival tickets will be refunded via ticket sailor.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

The post has gained more than 100 reactions and 45 shares so far.

It comes after the Fairground Museum announced last November that it was set to close for good.

After serving the community for more than 20 years, Dingles was “gutted” to be closing.

The venue, which had plans to expand its token-based rides, thanked visitors and friends for their support over the years.
