Six amazing knockout matches new Champions League format could serve up including Liverpool nightmare and El Clasico

THE exciting new Champions League format has the potential to serve up some cracking knockout sides.

It is all to play for heading into the final matchday next Wednesday when there is 18 matches on at the same time.

The Champions League tournament tree

Manchester City are in danger of crashing out and need to beat Club Brugge and hope other results go in their favour.

Aston Villa will aim to see off Celtic and land a spot in the all-important top eight of the table.

European giants like PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus all have their positions hanging in the balance.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are guaranteed to get a bye from the play-offs and go into the last-16 as a seed.

And it would take several surprise results to see Arsenal not in the top eight.

Once the league phase comes to an end next Wednesday, the bottom 12 teams are eliminated from the competition and there is no dropping down to the Europa League.

The top eight sides go straight into the last-16 as the seeded teams in a tennis-style draw.

Sides that finish from 9th to 24th go into a play-off round to join them, with the top eight of this middle section seeded.

JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS

They are then put in pairs, for example, 9th and 10th together, 11th and 12th together, and so on.

The duos are then put into fours based on their league finishes and there is then a draw to decide the match-ups from the quartets.

For example, 9th and 10th will play worst qualifiers either 23rd or 24th; 11th or 12th will be drawn against either 21st or 22nd, and so on.

If you have managed to wrap your head around that – here are some eye-catching ties that could come our way in the play-off and last-16 rounds.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid – last-16

There are no rules preventing teams from the same nation going head-to-had after the league phase.

And there is a real chance El Clasico could be a thrilling last-16 contest.

Barcelona have cruised through the first phase of the tournament, including an incredible 5-4 comeback win over Benfica.

As for Real Madrid, they suffered defeat to Lille, AC Milan and Liverpool and they are in danger of not finishing in the top eight.

As things currently stand, Los Blancos are 16th and Barca are 2nd, meaning a last-16 clash is possible.

Liverpool vs Celtic – last 16

A battle of Britain could await Liverpool after their bye from the play-off round.

Celtic currently find themselves 18th and would therefore be in a quartet set to play either Barca or Liverpool should they come through the play-off round.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich – last 16

If the table after seven games was final, we would have a 25 per cent chance of seeing Liverpool vs Bayern.

But for Harry Kane to get his comeback to England, the German giants may have to come through a play-off clash.

Bayern will be facing their chances of coming in the top eight as they have Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday and the Slovaks are second-bottom without a point to their name.

But defeats earlier in the campaign to Feyenoord, Barca and Villa means it is out of their hands.

Man City vs Aston Villa – play-off round

City are on the brink of elimination after throwing away their two-goal lead to PSG last night.

Pep Guardiola’s side need to beat Club Brugge next Wednesday to sneak into the top 24.

Three points will only take them to the bottom end of the qualifying teams, meaning they will face one of the unlucky clubs narrowly missing out on the bye.

Villa could easily be one of them as they are currently out the top eight on goal difference.

A draw against Celtic could see them be in opposing pairs for the play-offs.

Man City/Aston Villa vs Arsenal – last 16

City and Villa may not be needing their passports for some time.

They could get paired together and then face Arsenal, who look extremely likely to be a seed in the last-16 draw.

The Gunners are currently third in the standings and if results fell a certain way, including a City win and a Villa draw, there is a real chance of an all-Premier League battle to the quarter-final.

Man City vs Real Madrid – play-off

Real Madrid and City have faced each other in the last three seasons in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

And whoever has won the tie has gone on to lift the trophy.

The current holders are currently a point off the magic eight – but there is seven teams between them and the last remaining spot.

A blockbuster play-off clash is a possibility.

Ben Chilwell thrown career lifeline as Borussia Dortmund interested in offering him a Chelsea escape route

BEN CHILWELL could be offered an escape route from Chelsea by Borussia Dortmund.

TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: STAY UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST MOVES FROM THE JANUARY WINDOW

Veiga was being targeted by the Bundesliga club but has opted for Italians Juventus instead on a deal until the end of the season.

And that has thrown up a way out of Stamford Bridge for Chilwell, 28, who has been told he has no future at Chelsea by boss Enzo Maresca.

Chilwell’s wages of around £190K a week are an obstacle to him leaving this month whether on loan or permanently.

But Chelsea may end up having to subsidise his wages as they are doing with Raheem Sterling who is currently with London rivals Arsenal.

Portuguese Veiga has only been with Chelsea for six months but wanted more first-team football.

He is already eyeing next summer’s World Cup finals in north America as part of his plan.

Boss Maresca pointed out that the player became a full Portugal international after joining him last summer.

Juventus will pay around £4million in loan fees and there is no obligation to buy at the end of the campaign.

Chilwell has played just 45 minutes of first-team football this season and was part of the infamous “bomb squad” asked to train separately from the first team this season.

Sources say he would prefer to stay in England and in the Premier League but the possibility of a move to last season’s Champions League finalists could be tempting.

The Dortmund target has amassed a total of nine goals and 12 assists in 107 appearances with Chelsea since his arrival from Leicester in 2020.

Emmerdale star Sammy Winward’s daughter reveals OnlyFans feud has escalated after footballer dad ‘called her a w***e’

THE bitter feud between Mia Winward-Dunn and her estranged parents Sammy Winward and David Dunn has reached devastating new heights.

The OnlyFans model has revealed that both the Emmerdale actress and football manager refused her recent olive branch and have now completely cut her off from the family.

Things have got so bad between the star, 19, and her parents that she believes there is no going back after she says her father cruelly branded her a ‘w***e’ and slammed the phone down on her.

Speaking from Mexico, where she is currently staying, Mia told us: “I tried to reconnect with my dad and he called me a w***e on the phone.

“I’m completely fully cut off and they want any sort of contact, which is really big shame because I thought I’d be the bigger person in the whole situation.

“I  text them I’m saying I was really sorry, I didn’t want anything bad to come of it, and it doesn’t mean I’m a bad person because I do OnlyFans.”

David Dunn is a former pro footballer who spent much of his career playing for Blackburn Rovers, before going on to be a manager.

He had daughter Mia with actress Sammy, who he was engaged to, in 2005 but they split later that year.

The upset star added: “I love my parents.  They might not reciprocate that, but I love them to pieces.

“It’s really just not OK to cut off a family member because they do OnlyFans and call them a w***e on the phone and then block you because at the end of the day, I am their 19 year old daughter that has gone out on their own.

“I moved out at 16, I moved to Manchester by myself. I’ve done everything very independently.

“I think that’s absolutely disgusting.”

Upset Mia, continued: “I think it’s crazy to have such anger towards me when I am in fact at the end of the day their daughter.

“I do totally get the fact that they don’t love what I do, but at the same time, I am, I’m a human being and especially – I am the human being that came out of my mother.”

Asked if she thinks things will ever go back to normal, she replied: “I’ve lost all hope now.”

Mia has made some serious cash selling racy snaps online and is currently living in Mexico making content.

She is planning to invest in property in Tulum and is launching her own business, selling off her underwear to her legion of fans.

Sammy and David have been contacted for comment.

Star of ‘biggest TV thriller’ apologises to ‘disappointed’ fans over major series two changes

A STAR of the ‘biggest TV thriller’ apologises to his ‘disappointed’ fans over major changes to series 2.

The second season of the hit Netflix thriller broke viewing records after an agonising three-year wait.

One of the terrifying and most deadly of games from the show[/caption]

Squid Game actor Wi Ha-joon has reassured fans that there is more to come for his character after complaints of a greatly reduced season two arc.

The show started with Seong Gi-Hun known as Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae) searching everywhere to find members of the evil game.

His only goal was to re-join the deadly Squid Game arena in order to stop the brutal game creators once and for all.

Once in, he was up against hundreds of other contestants to be in with a chance to win a life-changing amount of money.

But despite everything he did to protect players, contestants continued to die.

However he made a friend in Player 001 who was actually The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) in disguise.

The pair, alongside other contestants decided to take over the game and they went into battle together.

But Player 001’s betrayal was devastating and it had dire consequences for all those involved in the end.

However, fans noticed that a key season one character seemed to be forgotten about.

In the first season, Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Ha-joon) infiltrates the games in order to find his missing brother Hwang In-ho.

But in a brilliant twist, he shockingly discovers that his brother is The Front Man orchestrating the games.

Hwang is shot by the Front Man’s guards and plummets off a cliff and barely survives the ordeal.

In the second season, Jun-ho desperately tried to rediscover the island where the game is hosted so that he could return.

But his character very quickly faded into the background.

‘I do understand that, from the audience’s point of view, it might have been disappointing,’ Ha-joon told Radio Times.

Ha-joon continued: ‘But from my perspective, I know this is part of the longer and bigger story, so I wasn’t disappointed at all.’

The South Korean star shared that “a lot of Jun-ho’s stories will be dealt with in depth” and that ‘different aspects’ of his personality will be shown in the third season

So does that mean he might join his brother and protect him from his enemies?

Asked whether this could happen, Ha-joon was cryptic ensuring that he didn’t give away spoilers from season 3.

‘I’m curious about what Jun-ho will do if that kind of situation arises,’ Ha-joon said.

He added: “I have no clue because even if you make a determination of what you might do in a [hypothetical] situation, when the situation really arises, then you actually don’t know what you will do.

Whatever path he takes, viewers can be assured it will be as exciting as before.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teased in an announcement: ‘The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3.”

Squid Game season 3 has no confirmed release date at the time of writing, but Netflix has confirmed it will premiere sometime in 2025,

The band released the statement today[/caption]

They have now decided to continue as a trio and not replace Chris, 55, as he concentrates on his health.

A statement on Bowling For Soup’s Instagram read: “To All Our Amazing Bowling For Soup Fans…

“It is with a heavy heart we announce that Chris Burney has made the decision to retire from his stage-right post in the band he co-founded in 1994.

“Some recent medical developments, 30 years of rocking balls and touring non-stop have made it difficult to continue. We are bummed to not have Chris by our sides, but absolutely support his decision.

“The three of us will carry on, with Chris’ Blessing, and continue to build the legacy of this band we all love so much. We will not be replacing Chris or touring with a touring guitarist. You cannot replace a legend. We were brothers when we started this journey…and brothers we remain.

“See you at the shows and in your ears.”

Speaking about the decision, frontman Jaret Reddick told K!: “He and I started this band 30 years ago, almost 31 now, and at one point, he was kind of the face of the band.

“I can’t say it enough: we wouldn’t be us, or where we are, without him.”

Bowling For Soup are set to play in the UK next month alongside Wheatus and Magnolia Park.

They’ve kicking off their tour in Blackpool on February 5, and Jaret previously told us he had one of the worst hangovers of his life in the seaside town.

“Blackpool is the only place I’ve ever been wheeled back to the tour bus,” Jaret said.

“We had a day off there and I was put onto a rolling dumpster to get me back.

“If you ask if I am going to a pub after the show, the answer is no. I know what you guys do.

“I fought to go back to Blackpool, that audience is amazing.”

Watch the grisly moment Anthony Fox in Emmerdale is murdered in cold blood – and another villager covers it up

ANTHONY Fox was murdered in cold blood on Emmerdale with his attacker finally unmasked after being teased all week.

The grisly scenes saw the village monster beat to death on the depot floor by one enraged character.

Fans of the ITV soap opera discovered that Aaron Dingle was the one who killed him after he figured out the truth about what Anthony had done to Ruby as a child.

Anthony is Steph’s real father, having abused Ruby in her teenage years, despite everyone having believed he was her grandfather.

It had been teased all week that either Chas, Nicola, Laurel, Caleb, Ruby, Aaron or Cain would be the one to deliver the final blow.

All seven of them had run-ins with Anthony and all discovered to an extent the truth of what he was really like.

Earlier in the week, Aaron had witnessed a tense interaction between Ruby and her father which left him deeply troubled.

He confronted Ruby about what went on after recognising “that look” in her eye and seeing just how fearful and traumatised she was to be around her father.

Aaron was sexually abused as a child by his father, Gordon, and eventually saw his father sent down for his crimes before he killed himself in prison.

Although Ruby did not divulge any details to Aaron, he took it upon himself to speak to Anthony and confronted him about it at the depot.

A struggling Anthony denied what Aaron was saying as things began to turn sinister and violent between the pair.

Anthony begged for Aaron not to attack him as he continually roughed him up before he told him that he would be taking him straight down to the police station to confess to raping his own daughter.

As tensions reached an all-time high, Anthony snapped back with vile words to Aaron.

The deeply evil man said: “She [Ruby] never tried to stop me!

“She enjoyed it as much as I did.

“Did you really try to stop your father?”

Seeing red, Aaron screamed as he charged at Anthony before throwing him to the ground and beating him with his bare hands.

Anthony laid on the floor in a semi-conscious state as he spat a knocked out tooth across the depot floor.

Aaron chose to walk away from the half-lifeless man as he returned home and confessed all about his crimes to boyfriend, John Sugden.

Sticking by him, John told Aaron they should return to the depot and assess the situation and “not leave him to die”.

As the couple arrived, it was confirmed instantly that Anthony was in fact dead and that Aaron had killed him.

Not being able to risk going to prison for the murder, John opted to help Aaron as he confirmed he would take care of disposing of the body.

Admitting he had to do similar in the army, he soon cleaned up the entire floor before putting Anthony inside a bag to conceal his body.

John then dragged him out and later told Aaron he had disposed of the body “where no one would find it” but declined to tell him where.

Before telling Aaron he had sorted it, John had a run-in with Ross and Steph where Ross rooted around in the back of his van.

John appeared visibly on-edge with his van likely having been used to move, or house, Anthony’s body.

Fans will remember seeing a body dumped in a river during the show’s New Year flashforwards but viewers will have to stay tuned to see if this was the fate of Anthony.

I’m going to Bali with free money from the government – my friends got £2k, it all depends on when you were born

A YOUNG woman was racing out the door to grab free money from the government.

Erin Griffiths, from the UK, took to social media with the hopes she would walk away with £2,000 to pay for her trip to Bali.

Sunset at Kuta Beach, Bali, with colorful umbrellas and beanbag seating.

Erin was thrilled her holiday to Bali was paid for[/caption]
Woman reacting with surprise while filing her nails.
tiktok/@erin.griffithsxox
Her cash payout was all thanks to the year she was born in[/caption]

And it turns out there are billions of pounds waiting to be claimed.

Why? The UK government started the Child Trust Fund scheme and those born between September 2002 and January 2011 were given money by the government to save and invest.

She said: “Get ready for me to be two grand richer because the government loves me.

“Babe, my mum called me yesterday, she was like, you got £2,000.”

Erin realised she might have had cash waiting for her when her friends started getting their money out and Erin was quick to ask her mum about it.

She went on: “I wouldn’t have had to go to work and spend my whole work’s wages on my driving lessons. As soon as I turned 16, I saved all my money for driving lessons.

“On the upside, I guess the government has paid for my trip to Bali because I have finally been granted permission to go to Bali by myself.”

“I’m even more excited now I know it’s free,” Erin said as she headed out to get her paycheck.

Over the course of the scheme, over 6 million trust funds were opened with the government putting in £2 billion.

Many of the trust funds grew interest leading some to get thousands of pounds, but it’s not guaranteed.

Citizen Advice has urged people to check if they have a trust fund if born within those years for a cash payout as £1.4 billion is still unclaimed.

The reason many have not been collected is because HMRC opened the trust funds without parents’ knowledge – so people are unaware they are sitting on cash.

Thankfully, Erin and millions of others are still able to claim.

Her video posted to her TikTok account @erin.griffithsxox went viral and people were quick to check for themselves, which you can do here.

What is the Child Trust Fund

Children born from September 2002 to January 2011 were given vouchers by the government to invest for the future, with the money only accessible at the age of 18.

Child Trust Funds were set up by the Labour government in the UK to encourage parents to save for their children’s future.

Children would get access to the payments when they reached 18 to assist with the cost of living.

The government initially put £250 into the tax-free account during a child’s first year, then added another £250 when they reached the age of seven.

For lower-income families, the payment was £500.

Parents, family and friends could also contribute to the account, up to set limits.

The scheme was watered down, then scrapped entirely by the coalition government in January 2011.

One person wrote: “Wait you need to tell us how we claim this money.”

Another commented: “I got £300 and some loose change i don’t know about a whole 2K.”

“My son has one but it’s not £2000 is about £800 am I missing something here,” penned a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “Mine was £2195, my parents added nothing to it over the years, it was with Foresters Financial.”

“I got £650, I’m fuming!” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “Nahhh stop what.”

Crucial motorway used by 180,000 drivers a day to close for TWO WEEKS next month – check if your route is affected

DRIVERS have been warned that a crucial motorway will be shut for two weeks next month as part of a £1 million project.

The M60 motorway will be completely closed in both directions for 13 consecutive nights from Monday, 17 February, through to Sunday, 2 March, although the closure will only take place overnight, between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am.

But it is due to close for a two-week period next month to complete work on the Stockport viaduct[/caption]
Traffic on the M60 motorway in Stockport, UK, with a train crossing a viaduct in the background.
Getty
So far, 23 of the 26 arches have been worked on, with only the three that pass over the motorway remaining[/caption]

The move comes as the Victorian-era viaduct that rises over the M60 in Stockport is to be restored by workers.

The 185-year-old structure, which is Grade II listed, has been worked on by Network Rail since last year and has so far seen workers remove vegetation and graffiti from the structure, as well as repair numerous bricks on 23 of its 26 arches.

However, with the M60 motorway passing underneath the remaining arches, this means the motorway will need to be closed for the work to be completed.

This includes workers being suspended from the viaduct above the carriageways.

Motorists looking to use the motorway have been advised to follow the diversion signs during the closure period, which will impact between Junction 27 and Junction 1.

Rob Stephens, principal route engineer for the North West route, said: “Stockport Viaduct is an important piece of cultural heritage for the railway and the Stockport community. We are proud to be responsible for its upkeep.

“The final stage of the project will take place this February, as we want to make sure the night-time road closure causes as little inconvenience as possible for the people of Stockport.

“The recent work means the overall appearance of the viaduct is much improved, but it also reduces the risk of damage caused by overgrown vegetation and graffiti.

“Managing plant growth on viaducts such as this is important in maintaining train performance as trees and shrubs can obscure signals and interfere with the overhead lines that power trains.”

Currently, the viaduct, which is 34 metres tall and 550 metres wide, carries 398 trains over it each day.

The M60 motorway, also known as the Manchester Ring Motorway or Manchester Outer Ring Road, passes through all of Greater Manchester’s metropolitan boroughs except for Wigan and Bolton.

According to Highways England, some 180,000 drivers use the M60, as well as the M62, each day.

The two motorways are known for sharing a section of their route around Manchester, with the M62 merging into the M60 at Junction 18, also known as Simister Island Interchange.

This comes as drivers who plan to use three major motorways have been issued a urgent alert ahead of Storm Eowyn.

The Met Office has issued amber warnings for “danger to life” as 90mph gales look set to batter the UK in the coming days – with the worst of the weather predicted for Friday.

Residents across the country are being cautioned over “very strong winds” which could spell potential disruption to road, rail, airports and ferry services.

London, Oxford, Peterborough, and Norwich just managed to avoid a weather warning, but the rest of the UK has been told to prepare for turbulent conditions.

This includes a yellow alert for fog has now come into force that covers major roads including the M6, M65 and M61 – with forecasters warning fog patches “may cause some travel disruption”.
