Moment drink-driver who downed 10 pints makes up bizarre story about crash that left woman needing her arm amputated
THIS is the shocking moment a drink-driver puts on a clueless act when quizzed by cops after causing a horrific crash that left a woman needing her arm amputated.
Leigh Brean, 43, downed 10 pints in five hours before smashing his Volkswagen Tiguan into a Fiat 500 travelling in the opposite direction of the A38 near Bristol Airport.
He had two passengers in the car at the time on October 28, 2023.
Footage from the scene shows cops quizzing Brean who refuses to participate while casually smoking a cigarette.
A cop can be heard asking: “Who’s vehicle is this? Who was in the vehicle?”
To which Brean replies: “I was.”
He then tells them that “the driver has gone”.
The 43-year-old continued to plead his innocence, insisting he was not the driver and then refused to complete a roadside test, MailOnline reports.
Brean had been overtaking two bendy buses in a no overtaking zone when he crashed into his victims driving a Fiat 500.
One of the victims, who has been described as a “business woman” was put into an induced coma for two months following the incident.
Her arm was amputated to her elbow but she later died due to sustaining such traumatic injuries also to her leg and brain.
The second victim suffered extensive internal bleeding and bruising after the crash.
Brean was jailed for three years and two months and banned from driving for 11 years and seven months.
The sentence comes after he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by driving and for failing to provide a specimen.
The family of one of the victims said: “The best part of this sentence was the length of the driving ban.
“We are aware of how many careless drivers there are on the road and the fact that there is one less on the road is a very welcome prospect.
“We hope that other judges in the future may make note of this aspect of Brean’s sentence.”
At the sentencing Judge Martin Picton said: “Your decision to drive when drunk has resulted in the infliction of unimaginable harm to (your victim).
“She was someone full of energy and enthusiasm for life and a successful businesswoman. She was physically very active both at work and at leisure.
“As a result of your actions, her life is now a shadow of that which it once was and she will never recover from the harm you caused when you chose to drive dangerously and when heavily intoxicated.
“Your remorse will provide no comfort to the female victim, her family or her partner who has also suffered harm as a result of being in the car at the time of the collision.”
Officer in the case, DC Victoria Anderson, said she hoped Brean’s conviction will “serve as a strong deterrent” to anyone considering getting behind the wheel of a car when they are under the influence.
She added: “This case has shown how the impact of one decision can have a life-long impact on all those involved.
“The victims and their families have shown incredible strength and resilience in the face of such adversity and their patience as they waited for justice to be served has been rewarded.
“But they now have to live with the impact of one individual’s complete recklessness.”
Who was Shafilea Ahmed? British-Pakistani girl murdered by parents Iftikhar and Farzana in an honour killing
SHAFILEA Ahmed was a British-Pakistani girl who was murdered by her parents, Iftikhar and Farzana, as they believed that she wanted to live a “western” life.
Her disappearance and death, which followed years of tragic abuse, will be examined in the ITV documentary Murder Without Honour.
Shafilea’s family life
Shafilea’s father Iftikhar Ahmed, was born in Pakistan but moved to the UK when he was 10 years old.
During a visit to Denmark, he met a woman named Vivi Lone Andersen who he later married in 1980.
The pair had a son together, named Tony, but Ahmed’s family disapproved of the union because Vivi had chosen to remain a Christian.
Eventually, Ahmed returned to Pakistan where he was forced into an arranged marriage with his cousin Farzana Ahmed in 1985.
After the ceremony, Ahmed persuaded Vivi to move to the UK with him but didn’t mention that he was already married.
Vivi filed for divorce and the pair lost contact until Ahmed phoned her to say that his second wife had given birth to a girl named Shalifea who was born on July 14, 1986.
Troubled upbringing
During her childhood, Shafilea suffered from child abuse.
One of her teachers spotted a bruise on her arm, which she said was from a “beating” by her parents.
In 2003, she ran away from home and told the council that “one parent would hold me whilst the other hit me”.
Shafilea also feared being taken to Pakistan and forced into a child marriage.
During a trip to her father’s home country in February that same year, Shafilea attempted suicide.
According to media reports at the time, she also turned down a suitor in a forced marriage during the trip.
Shafilea’s disappearance
Shafilea disappeared on September 11, 2003, and was missing for a week before her teachers informed the police.
Her remains were eventually found in February 2004, in the River Kent in Cumbria.
The police soon began to suspect that she may have been murdered by her parents, as part of an honour killing related to her rejecting the suitor in Pakistan.
Shafilea‘s parents are exposed
Shafilea’s killers were discovered after her younger sister Alesha orchestrated a robbery targeting her parent’s house on August 25, 2010.
Alesha let the robbers into her family home, but didn’t realise that they were armed.
Her family was tied up and her sister was hit in the shoulder with a hammer.
Alesha had built up debt while studying to become a law student, shortly before the robbery took place.
Studying had put her at odds with her parents, making it almost impossible for her to turn to them for help.
She was arrested for her role in the robbery and made no effort to hide her involvement from her family.
Later in court, the judge said: “You actively helped the robbers.
“Your wrists were never taped.
“You told your family to do exactly what the robbers said.
“You had a mobile phone, but of course did not call the police.
“You had texted the robbers with instructions.
“You told the robbers how to get to the money and the jewellery that was taken, which your parents claim was of considerable value – £10,000, and then £30,000.
“The police are sceptical of those claims.”
The judge gave Alesha a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, as she eventually proved to be vital in catching the people behind Shafilea death: her parents.
He said that the lenient sentence was given in light of Alesha providing this evidence with no intention of easing her sentence.
He also described her case as “extraordinary”.
Alesha admitted that she saw her own parents murder Shafilea by suffocating her with a carrier bag.
She said that she was told “we all know what happens to disobedient girls” by her parents, after they murdered her sister.
Speaking in court, the judge recalled the information that Alesha had provided, which explained her parents’ sinister motives.
He said: “Your mother and father had justified what they had done, on the grounds that your sister Shafilea had western friends and wanted to live a western life, did not want an arranged marriage.
“After the killing, your brother quickly told you and your sisters that Shafilea had deserved it.”
He added that Alesha was forced to “carry this darkest of secrets” and was even “drawn into protecting them”.
Shafilea’s parents were convicted of murdering their daughter, thanks to the evidence given by Alesha.
In court, Farzana turned against Iftikhar and tried to blame him for the murder but was found to have played an equal part in the killing.
The pair were eventually found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years on August 3, 2012.
A Murder Without Honour
Shafilea’s tragic murder will be examined in ITV’s A Murder Without Honour.
The hour-long episode will air on January 28, 2025.
Viewers who miss the show being broadcast can catch up on ITV’s streaming service ITVX.

And now their famous mum has set the record straight on how they ended up securing the gigs.
Taking to her Stories, she said in a video today: “So many are you messaging me saying, ‘Was that Zach and Leighton I saw in Hollyoaks?’ I know it’s so random but it was!
“It’s the funniest story. So when me and Zach went to the NTAs, we ended up meeting, on the red carpet, the exec of Hollyoaks and Zach is the biggest Hollyoaks fan. He’s obsessed.
“When he was little he used to get so excited for Sundays to watch the Hollyoaks Omnibus.
“And he was like, ‘Oh my God, I love Hollyoaks!’ and he was talking to her and she was like, ‘Why don’t you come down and see the set?’
“He was just over the moon and so excited. Zach wants to be a mechanic when he’s older, there’s no interesting in acting.
“Neither Zach or Leighton want to do anything in that industry but he was just so excited to go and see the set.”
Stacey added: “So the lovely lady from Hollyoaks invited them down and said, ‘If you want, you can be a little extra in a scene!’
“Leighton caught wind and was like, ‘I want to go to the Hollyoaks set.’
“So me, Zach and Leighton went up there and they just loved it. They were so nervous to be extras.
“They loved every second of it and the people at Hollyoaks were just so lovely and so kind and so nice to us and they just had the best day ever.”
Stacey then reposted an image of them with show stars Chalie Wernham and Charlie Clapham, writing: “My boys. For anyone who is raising teenagers I don’t know if it’s the same for you but it’s a rare moment with mine to see them really excited about something.
“So I can honestly say, watching how happy and excited they were this day made my heart so happy.”
A video clip shared by Hollyoaks saw Zachary, dressed as a Parcel Patrons worker, bumping into Mercedes, played by Jennifer Metcalfe, while delivering a package.
Meanwhile, Leighton appeared as a paperboy, arriving late to collect his papers, earning a stern telling-off from Price Slice employee Pearl Anderson, played by Dawn Hope.
She fumed, “Oh Leighton, what time do you call this to be collecting papers? I’ll be having a word with your mother. Go on.”
While it’s unclear whether their appearance is a one-off or marks the start of recurring roles, Zachary and Leighton’s surprise appearance has certainly delighted fans of Stacey and the soap.
One wrote in the comments section: “Aww Stacey’s kids so lovely to see them on my favourite show.”
Another added: “Welcome to Hollyokas family,” while a third person said: “Omg it’s @staceysolomon pickles.”
One more wrote: “I wasn’t expecting Stacey Solomon’s kids on here.”
Zachary is Stacey’s son with her ex-boyfriend Dean Cox, while Leighton is from her relationship with her ex-fiancé Aaron Barnham.
It’s not the only telly gig the boys have bagged recently, with the family set to star in a new TV documentary series.
