Sky TV customers need important new code that locks content from kids on popular app – how to set it up

NEW parental control features have been introduced to a popular app used by every kid that’s accessible via Sky boxes and TVs.

Parents can now add a special code to the platform to protect children from viewing content that’s not age appropriate, similar to Sky‘s own child lock that blocks certain channels during the daytime.

The new option is now available on Sky devices[/caption]

The app in question is YouTube, which introduced a new code lock feature in December.

It’s designed to prevent tech-savvy kids from watching YouTube signed out or accessing accounts belonging to older members of the household.

“We hope this change gives you added comfort in knowing kids cannot use accounts and features on your smart TV that aren’t meant for them, while also making recommendations in your profile more relevant to your interests rather than what you previously watched together as a family,” YouTube owner Google said.

The firm has been gradually rolling out the feature to the various devices you can use the video sharing platform on.

And now the YouTube app on Sky kit has the option ready to use.

But it needs to be switched on first.

When activated, a request for the parental code will appear whenever someone tries to watch YouTube signed out or if you try to go into a non-kids YouTube account.

It’ll also pop up if you try to remove YouTube accounts from the Sky Glass, Sky Stream and or Sky Q device.

How to set up parental codes on YouTube

Setting up parental codes is simple – start by opening the YouTube app on your Sky TV or box.

On the homepage, find the settings on the left.

Choose the parent code tab.

Then follow the on-screen instructions to set up your four digital code.

More ways to keep kids safe on YouTube

Setting up a YouTube Kids profile is one of the best ways to ensure young ones are watching age appropriate content on the platform.

These are separate profiles that can be created from a parent’s account.

This allows you to pick a content experience level appropriate for your child.

This ranges from:

  • Preschool (ages 4 and under)
  • Younger (ages 5–8)
  • Older (ages 9–12)
  • Approve content yourself

Performing alongside her is Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), a young comedy writer whose career took a nosedive after a controversial tweet.

After being forced to work together, the two develop a surprising bond.

Hannah has teased a ‘rollercoaster’ journey for Ava in series three, adding “she certainly comes out the other end of this season in a new place”.

Starting from Friday, February 7, all seasons of Hacks will be available as boxsets via Sky On Demand and streaming service NOW.

Jean Smart’s performance as Deborah Vance has been widely celebrated, and she was awarded her third consecutive Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for it at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

She also nabbed the Golden Globe for best performance by a female actor in a television series – musical or comedy.

In response she joked: “Never thought I’d be so happy to be called a Hack.”

Aside from its two main characters, Hacks boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Kaitlin Olson, and Christopher McDonald.

The show also features appearances by Hollywood icons like Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, and Christopher Lloyd.

We’re being forced to tear down shed over bizarre rule that means council owns our garden…now they’re taking us to COURT

A BAFFLED couple is being taken to court over a bizarre law that means the council owns a 2m slice of their garden.

Amy Bonner and husband Pete, from Surrey, moved into their dream home in Laleham Park but found themselves in hot water.

Amy Bonner and husband Pete have spent £2,500 on solicitor fees and a surveyor to tackle the issue[/caption]

A 90-year-old error in the Land Registry meant a third of the pair’s garden is owned by Spelthorne Borough Council.

The couple are now being chased after they were informed that 2m part of their property has “encroached” on council land.

A shocked Amy said the council has treated them “like criminals” when all they did was buy a house.

She added: “I’m always on edge, the stress has been horrendous.”

Now Amy “wakes up in the middle of the night” worried about whether her and her husband will have to go to court.

The pair received the letter in July 2023 explaining the issue and, adhering to the council orders, moved the fence back by about a metre.

It was later revealed, unbeknownst to Amy and Pete when they bought the property in 2020, part of their new garden also was owned by the council as well as the shed.

The previous owner had assured them with pictures that this land had always been part of the house.

Regardless, the council has claimed they owned the plot running down the right side of the property, including part of the driveway, the patio and the shed.

This leaves the Bonners with only a patch of garden directly behind their home.

They attempted to resolve the issue with the council politely, agreeing to get a surveyor to mark the garden boundaries in January 2024.

Despite spending £2,500 on solicitor fees and a surveyor, the council demanded the couple to “vacate all encroached land” and dismantle the shed and remove the courtyard.

All the while expecting the new owners of the property to foot the bill.

After some extensive research, the Bonners found out the history of the small slice of land.

In 1932 it belonged to a man called Alfred Williams, but an error in 1934 saw the land transferred to the council.

Nearly a century later, the Bonners are still paying for the mistake, even though the previous owner had always used the land without any objections.

The council however now are claiming Amy and Pete are building extension work on the land and are “obstructing access” by putting a skip outside the front of the house.

This skip supposedly blocks off essential water supply accesses which was said to be needed at all times.

Amy and Pete have desperately refuted these claims, explaining the shed was constructed before they moved in.

The frustrated couple said they can’t remove any developments as they “can’t take down some that’s not there.”

Amy is shocked at how it appears the council has an “unlimited budget” to throw at the issue and thinks it’s a “a crazy way to spend public money.”

Amy and Pete are hoping to claim “adverse land possession” to take back the contested part of their garden, but this could take up to a year.

The issue is yet to be settled and surveyors are continuing to measure up the boundaries of each property and tracing back ownership archives.

What are your rights over a fence row?

IT'S very important to know your rights if you are embroiled in a fence row with a neighbour.

boundary feature can be a fence, wall, hedge, ditch, piece of wire, or sometimes even just the edge of a driveway.

The only way to know for certain who owns what side and to avoid any neighbour disputes, is to refer to the title plan or Land Registry

In this, the T mark is used to indicate who the boundary belongs to and therefore who is responsible for its upkeep, say pros at Jacksons Fencing.

Larger developments tend to have some indication provided by the builder, but there are no hard and fast rules

People often think they are responsible for the left (or right) hand boundary wherever they live, but there isn’t any legal basis for this.

You can check with HM Land Registry to see which boundary feature you are responsible for.

Often households can’t get hold of the paperwork but experts say they shouldn’t panic.

Homeowners can guess who owns the fence by checking where the rails are.

Pros say: “The fence is typically facing away from their property so that their neighbour gets the ‘good’ side.

“This is the most secure way of facing fencing so there are no rails for anyone to use to climb into your garden.

“This is then repeated with the neighbour on the other side to ensure that each home has both a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fence side.”

Walls and fences are often built on the land of the boundary’s owner with the edge of the wall marking the limit.

While professionals agree a glimpse at the fence can give you a hint, it’s not foolproof – so you can’t be certain.

Fines and punishment

It is recommended to always check legal documents before making changes to avoid hefty fines.

There is no law that the neighbour has to get the good side of the fence, so it’s completely up to whoever owns the fence.

Fencing pros have suggested: “It may be worth selecting a double-sided panel with no ‘bad’ side as both sides look the same and rails are concealed within the fence panel.”

If one boundary backs onto a road or footpath you can install the panels with the rails on the inside

But if it’s installed on the outside, it can provide an “easy ladder for burglars to enter your garden”.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Property Litigation Association have created a mediation service to help neighbours resolve disputes over their property boundaries without resorting to court action.

RICS also provides a list of surveyors who could assist in boundary disputes.

If a dispute continues, it is ultimately a court that makes decisions, but they do not like such disputes being put before them.

Changing a boundary

If you want to change an existing boundary, such as replacing an old fence with a new one, we always recommend discussing with your neighbour first and making sure it is all agreed.

The registered titles can help you to reach an agreement, but only if this information has been added.

In terms of decorations on a fence legal advisers recommended asking around over who actually first installed it.

But they also urged caution before getting to work on amending the fence without getting more certainty yourself – since there is a danger of actually being prosecuted for criminal damage.

How high can a garden fence be?

The height of the fence is measured from your ground level, this can have an impact when, due to slopes in the ground, your garden may be at a higher level than your neighbours‘.

garden fence can be as high as 100m but you need to get planning permission if it’s over than 2m.

However, there are some complications to this.

If you are thinking about front garden fences, restrictions state that fences alongside a driveway can be a maximum of 1m or 3ft.

You would need to get planning permission for putting a trellis on a fence of 2m.

But, if any plant that you grow on that trellis exceeds 2m, you do not need to obtain a permit for the growing plant.

Play Sun Bingo’s Highland Reels slot game ahead of this year’s Burns Night

THIS year marks the 266th birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Burns was born on 25 January 1759. Although only alive for 37 years, he had quite the impact.

While the man himself may not be up to celebrating his birthday (we’ll forgive him at his age), his Scottish kin have kept the party going for over two-and-a-half centuries.

Things may look a little different at Burns Night celebrations this year as millions of people are currently in red weather warnings due to Storm Éowyn.

However, there are some traditions for the Scottish Bard’s birthday that can be done from the safety of your home.

WANT TO STAY INSIDE AND BAKE THIS WEEKEND? CHECK OUT THESE RECIPES

Burns Night traditions

Honouring the poet with a Burns supper began in July 1801 when nine of his friends gathered to mark the fifth anniversary of his death.

The evening is said to have included a meal, performances of Burns’ poetry and speech in his honour.

Burns Night traditions include the Selkirk Grace being recited:

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit.

Next comes the supper. Of course, this includes obligatory haggis as a main.

Before the national dish of Scotland is brought out, Burns’ poem Address to a Haggis is recited.

WE HOST 40 FREE GAMES DAILY HERE AT SUN BINGO

Everyone must toast the haggis, which is then doused in a dram of whisky for good measure before being cut with a sgian-dubh (‘skee-an doo’).

This is the knife worn with traditional highland dress that is slipped into the top of the sock.

After the supper comes the fun, poetry and whisky. Various poems or songs by Burns are recited.

Notable speeches include the ‘Toast to the Lassies’ which should be a funny speech that praises women and all they do for men, particularly highlighting those in attendance (and quoting Burn’s works where possible).

PLAY DYNAMITE DIGGER TODAY

This speech can get very chaotic as there’s no set words, other than the ending: “To the Lassies!”

The women get a chance to take revenge for whatever has just been said about them in their responding speech, the ‘Reply from the Lassies’.

Anyone still able to stand does so and everyone sings Auld Lang Syne.

We were sick of rubbish pay as police officers so switched to OF – we now make so much cash AND have time for the kids

A COUPLE have revealed how they ditched their careers as police officers to make spicy content online.

Cece and Kasey met while serving in the US police force and instantly fell in love.

The pair soon switched jobs to make spicey content and now rake in thousands[/caption]

Speaking to Love Don’t Judge, Cece said: “I was working at the police department and I got told that a rookie was starting.

“Initially, I didn’t like him; he just came off as very much like a tool to me; I felt like he was full of himself.”

But that all changed when they did defense training together.

“He was on top of me and pulled me close to him while we were doing this one maneuver and it just got really hot really fast,” she explained.

Now the pair are happily married with children and co-parent Cece’s children from a previous relationship.

Cece revealed she was a police officer for four years before quitting to start Only Fans.

She added: ” I was a little bit miserable at my job, the environment was a little hostile, my kids wanted me around more so I ended up leaving and making adult content.

“Within the first couple of weeks, I made £100K.”

Kasey joined Cece on Only Fans after they had their first child and he decided he wanted to stay home more as well.

He added: “We were living paycheck to paycheck, we had no time with our kids, we were bringing work issues home it was just a no-brainer.”

The pair often film content together and are unfazed by negativity, saying ‘for all the people who judge us, it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day.’

The clip went viral on the YouTube account and people were quick to share their thoughts on their career change.

One person wrote: “They look happy. Regardless of what they do. That’s what’s important.”

Another commented: “They make a cute couple. The best part is, they have all the support they need, which is cool.”

What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is a subscription content service based in London.

As of 2023, it is thought to have more than 220million registered users and over three million content creators.

Sex workers charge monthly fees for access to pictures, videos and more.

While popular for porn, the site isn’t exclusively designed with that in mind – anyone who wants to build up a fan base and charge them for it can set one up.

Celebs like Katie Price and Kerry Katona are popular personalities on the platform.

“Whether you’re uploading tutorials, tips, behind-the-scenes footage or just endless selfies, a lot of your followers would be willing to pay for them,” the company states.

For every subscription that’s sold to a viewer, performers get 80 per cent of the cash while OnlyFans gets the rest.

It isn’t limited to adult content, as it has become popular with physical fitness experts and musicians.

“Good for them. Being a cop is no joke,” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “People are going for the fast money.”

Someone else added: “Why not? They are both attractive and seem nice and grounded. And the money is so good.”

Iconic £1.75 beer sold in Aldi & Tesco urgently recalled over fears shoppers could be drinking GLASS

A POPULAR brewery has recalled a £1.75 beer over fears drinkers could break glass when opening.

Brewer Heineken UK has pulled their 550ml glass bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale, which are sold at major supermarkets including Aldi and Tesco off shelves.

Newcastle Brown Ale bottles.
The affected batch numbers are: L4321, L4322, L4323, L4324, L4325 and L4326
Rex Features

It was discovered that glass smashed when opening the beverages.

The manufacturing issue is limited to certain Newcastle Brown Ale 550ml glass bottles only with Best Before Date of 30.11.2025.

The affected batch numbers are: L4321, L4322, L4323, L4324, L4325 and L4326.

Heineken UK said: “Safety is our top priority, and on the basis that a small number of bottles are impacted by this potential safety issue, we are recalling this run of glass bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale as a precaution.

“We urge those consumers in possession of the product not to drink it, but to return the unopened bottles to where they purchased them for a refund.

“We ask any customers to immediately halt the sale of any stock they hold with these batch numbers.

“We are providing customers guidance on how to register and return affected stock and ask them to contact our Customer Care team with any additional queries.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working with the regulatory authorities after alerting them of the matter.”

Your product recall rights

Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know.

Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.

But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.

If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.

When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.

If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.

They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.

In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.

You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item

JFK’s grandson gives shock reaction to Trump’s order RELEASING assassination files & says ‘truth is sadder than myth’

THE grandson of former US president John F Kennedy has blasted Donald Trump’s official order to release the secret assassination files.

Thousands of classified files around the shock 1963 murder of JFK are now due to be opened up and made public – causing grandson Jack Schlossberg to respond “the truth is sadder than myth”.

A photo taken minutes before JFK was shot dead in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963

Speculation and wild conspiracy theories around the assassination have constantly raged on in the decades since the tragedy.

JFK was shot in the head and neck by a 24-year-old killer whilst travelling in an open-top car parade in Dallas, Texas.

Lee Harvey Oswald, 24, was later confirmed by officials as the shooter before he himself was gunned down by Jack Ruby.

Details and images around the event were all released in the years following however some top secret files remained locked away.

Conspiracy theorists saw the hidden information as a so-called cover up and started to speculate over what may be revealed in the documents.

The prospect of any new information will excite amateur sleuths with a leading theory claiming there may have been more than just a single gunman.

Trump signed an executive order instructing his Director of National Intelligence to put together a plan for the full release of documents about the JFK assassination within 15 days from Thursday.

He simultaneously ordered the release of all documents relating to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy – JFK’s brother – and Martin Luther King as well.

Officials have 45 days to offer a plan to Trump for the RFK and MLK paperwork.

A statement alongside the order spoke about how opening the files is being done for the families of the victims and the American people “who deserve transparency and truth”.

JFK’s grandson Schlossberg, 32, has since reacted to the news but says he doesn’t agree with the order.

He posted on X after plans were announced and directly spoke to those creating the cover up narrative: “JFK conspiracy theories.

“The truth is a lot sadder than the myth – a tragedy that didn’t need to happen.

“Not part of an inevitable grand scheme.

“Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back.

“There’s nothing heroic about it.”

Schlossberg later responded to people commenting on the situation and said he and his family already “know everything”.

Millions of pages of JFK documents have already been released with only a few thousand kept in the archives.

In total, around three per cent – over 3,600 – are said to be left unseen.

JFK’s nephew, Robert F Kennedy Jr said he is yet to be convinced only one man was behind his uncle’s murder[/caption]

Experts doubt there are any major revelations lurking in the archives that would change the accepted version of events.

The most recent releases included CIA cable and memos recording visits by Oswald to the Cuban and Soviet embassies in Mexico City weeks before the assassination.

The idea of a second potential shooter has been fuelled in recent years after JFK’s nephew, Robert F Kennedy Jr said he is yet to be convinced only one man was behind his uncle’s murder.

RFK Jr has grown close to Trump in recent months and became part of his new cabinet as health secretary.

Trump said the pen should’ve been given to RFK Jr when he signed the order.

Trump made promises to open up the documents during his election campaign and has now made good on his pledge.

He made a similar promises in his first term, but was persuaded by the CIA and FBI that some documents should remain private.

It was to avoid the possibility of revealing national security secrets, Trump said.

JFK assassination explained

JFK's was assassinated as he sat inside a motorcade as it traveled through downtown Dallas on November 22, 1963.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was sat next to her husband at the time as the limousine turned off Main Street at Dealey Plaza around 12:30 pm.

As they passed the Texas School Book Depository, gunfire suddenly reverberated in the plaza.

Bullets struck the president’s neck and head as he slumped over toward Mrs. Kennedy.

The atrocity was caught on film which was only recovered some time after the death.

JFK’s killer was announced as Lee Harvey Oswald.

Oswald is believed to have fired three bullets – the first missed, while the third delivered the fatal blow to the President’s head.

The second bullet has been at the centre of theories of another shooter — possibly hiding on the grassy knoll that the motorcade passed.

The Warren Commission concluded this bullet hit Kennedy at the back of his neck, passed through his throat and went on to hit Texas governor John Connally, who was sitting in the front of the car.

It then passed through Connally’s chest to hit his wrist and thigh.

Cops arrested Oswald just an hour later and took him to a local police station.

Another officer, Patrolman J. D. Tippit, was also killed by Oswald.

On Sunday November 24, Oswald was scheduled to be transferred from police headquarters to a county jail.

Viewers tuned in all across America to watch a live television of the event buy suddenly a man shot Oswald at point blank range with a pistol.

He was identified as Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner.

Amazon recalls popular massage product over fears it could EXPLODE as shoppers urged to return item immediately

AMAZON has recalled a popular massage product over fears one of its parts could explode – and shoppers have been urged to return the item immediately.

Brits have been warned that the three pin adaptor which connects to the popular neck massage tool could pose a serious risk of fire or electric shock.

Amazon has recalled a popular massage product over fears it could explode, as shoppers are urged to return the item immediately[/caption]

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) recalled the item because it lacks “proper safety features.”

Invospar’s Massagers have proven a popular choice among shoppers looking for a cheap alternative to a day at the spa.

In a report, OPSS said the 3-pin adaptor should be returned over concerns of “poor quality” connections.

This could cause the wire to short circuit, resulting in the gadget catching fire, electrocuting someone, or even exploding.

The affected products were made in China and sold between 2017 and 2021.

Invospar Massagers are sold on Amazon anywhere between £30 and £45.

It’s been confirmed that the massage part of the tool is unaffected.

Anyone with a faulty device should contact support@invospa.com to nab a free replacement power supply.

They will need to provide an order ID or photos of the adaptor.

The Sun has approached Amazon for comment.

This comes after an urgent warning was issued by the supplier just a few days ago over concerns a heater posed a “high risk of fire”.

The High Efficiency Fan Heater was previously sold on Amazon and would likely have been picked up by those looking for cost effective ways to stay warm.

As temperatures have dropped in recent months, many have focused their attention on cheap and efficient tech to heat their homes.

A report issued last week by the Office for Product Safety and Standards revealed the heater presented a “high risk” if inadequately earthed.

Not only was the product rejected at the border, the online marketplace removed the listing.

Traitors fans shocked by clip of original BBC show – 18 years before Claudia took charge – but do you remember it?

FANS of The Traitors have been stunned to realise that the BBC first aired a version of the programme 18 years before the current Claudia Winkleman-fronted show.

Beeb bosses attempted a version of the cunning game show back in 2004 but it looked drastically different to its modern-day counterpart and it’s now back in the spotlight after Greg James featured the show on his BBC Sounds podcast, Rewinder.

The unearthed footage showcased nine participants sat facing one another in chairs with two of the nine of them the “traitor” who is aiming to steal the £5,000 on offer through deception.

The series first aired in February 2004 over five nights on BBC Two was hosted by Tony Livesey but it made little to no impact.

It’s understood that some older pilot episodes fronted by Paul Kaye were created but never aired.

Each episode of the 2004 run contained a brand new set of players.

But now as the current series becomes one of TV’s most watched ever, fans are re-discovering the original programme which failed to impress.

Its premise saw the contestants telling each other about their lives and their backstory with whoever has been chosen to be the Traitor making it all up as they go along.

During the episode, which is essentially one long round table, the Faithfuls, who were actually known as the Citizens, can choose to call a vote if they think they have identified a Traitor.

If voted out, as is with the current run, they must reveal their identity.

If the Citizens managed to successfully vote out the Traitors then they shared the pot of £5,000 but if it became the same amount of Traitors and the same amount of Citizens, as in two out of the final four were Traitors, then the Traitors automatically win the money.

In another difference to the current run, the viewers at home can choose to play along as host Tony told fans to turn away if they did not want to be selected.

It was then never clarified on-screen again who was who until the reveal.

One of the show’s contestants was actress Ruth Wilson before she found success with her acting career.

Ruth was described as a drama student and a teen magazine cover girl during her stint on the programme.

Two years later, she managed to achieve fame thanks to her role in the TV adaptation of Jane Eyre.

Since then, she has held starring roles in Luther, His Dark Materials and Mrs Wilson.

BBC Radio 1 host Greg re-shared the clips of Ruth on the show as part of his podcast in which he re-visits forgotten media in the BBC archives.

In his clip, Greg was quick to pick up on some of the show’s differences as he highlighted the show’s “budget” as being the most obvious one.

There was no dramatic Scottish castle for the first edition with players instead confined to just one simple chair in a dimly-lit TV studio.

How does The Traitors work and who hosts it?

The Traitors first launched in the UK in 2022, after the Dutch format was acquired by the BBC.

Claudia Winkleman is the show’s host, and has now hosted all three series to date.

How does it work?

It is a reality game show that involves 22 contestants, and some of them are chosen to be The Traitors.

The Traitors sees a group of contestants taking part in “the ultimate game of truth and deception”.

The group of contestants are competing for the chance to walk away with a huge cash prize.

While navigating through a series of challenges, the team are also tasked with figuring out who the Traitors are in the group (usually three contestants).

Each night, the Traitors gather to “eliminate” one of the Faithful, removing them from the competition

Meanwhile, the traitors can be “banished” if they’re successfully outed as a traitor by a faithful.

The winners of the show are either the Traitor who remains undetected or the Faithfuls if they successfully eliminate all the Traitors.

The prize sees the winner could get £120K.

Warning as spike of ‘highly infectious’ disease detected in the UK – 6 of the first signs to appear

A ‘CONCERNING’ rise in measles cases has been detected in the UK.

At least 21 people in Bristol have been confirmed as having the highly infectious disease since 16 December, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said.

Figures show the south-west makes up for nearly half of all cases in the country, with 26 out of a total of 57.

Health chiefs are pleading with parents to get their children vaccinated, with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), jab.

“Measles is highly infectious, and it can cause serious disease or even death in some rare cases,” said Dr Alasdair Wood, from the UKHSA.

Leeds, was the next city to have the most cases, reporting 13 infections within the same time period.

The rise comes as vaccination rates for two doses of MMR have fallen below 90 per cent, which could lead to more outbreaks, the UKHSA has warned.

Dr Wood said measles had been “circulating across the country” over the last 12 months, with the majority of cases in the south west confirmed in November and December.

“This more rapid rise in cases within the region is concerning,” he added.

Last year, the majority of cases originated from the West Midlands, particularly Birmingham, which experienced the worst outbreak the region had seen since 1996.

Measles can spread very easily among those who are unvaccinated, especially in nurseries and schools

In some children, measles can be very serious, lead to hospitalisation lifelong complications, and even death.

Early symptoms include:

  1. A runny nose
  2. A red rash
  3. Tiredness
  4. Sore, red eyes
  5. Fever
  6. Small greyish white spots in mouth

While many sufferers recover quickly, it can lead to lifelong disabilities and even death.

When it spreads, measles can affect the lungs and brain and cause pneumoniameningitis, blindness, seizures, and encephalitis.

Getting vaccinated offers protection and helps prevent the spread of the disease in those more vulnerable.

In January UKHSA declared a national incident and warned that uptake of the MMR jab was at its lowest level in more than a decade.

The population coverage for two doses below the 95 per cent threshold that would prevent measles from spreading.

Efforts to boost uptake have included the national catchup campaign for MMR that was launched in November last year and ramped up in the following months.

Expert answers MMR questions

TO help deal with parental concerns, Professor Helen Bedford, a specialist in child public health at University College London, tells you all you need to know about the MMR vaccine.

When is the vaccine given?

The MMR vaccine is part of the NHS Routine Childhood Immunisation Programme.

It’s typically given via a single shot into the muscle of the thigh or the upper arm.

The first dose is offered to children at the age of one (babies younger than this may have some protection from antibodies passed on from their mother, which start to wear off at about 12 months.)

The second dose is then offered to children aged three years and four months before they start school.

To check to see if you or your child have had the recommended two doses of MMR, you can look at their/your Personal Child Health Record, also known as the red book.

If you can’t find the red book, call your GP and ask them for your vaccine records.

You are never too old to catch up with your MMR vaccine.

If you see from your vaccination records that you did not receive two doses as a child, you can book a vaccination appointment.

Is the vaccine safe?

The MMR vaccine is safe and effective at preventing measles, mumps and rubella.

In the UK, we started using the jab in 1988, so we have decades of experience using it.

The jab is made from much-weakened live versions of the three viruses.

This triggers the immune system to produce antibodies that are protective in the face of future exposure.

It takes up to three weeks after having the vaccine to be fully protected.

Like any vaccine, the MMR jab can cause side-effects, which are usually mild and go away very quickly.

This includes rash, high temperature, loss of appetite and a general feeling of being unwell for about two or three days.

There is also a very small chance children can have a severe allergic reaction.

But compared to the complications of measles, there is no contest that vaccination is by far the safest and most effective route to take.

Why was it linked with autism?

In 1998, Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues published a now-discredited paper in medical journal The Lancet.

The paper suggested that the MMR vaccine might be associated with autism and a form of bowel disease.

It led to a sharp decline in vaccination rates.

Even at the time, the research was considered poor.

The Lancet retracted the story in 2010 after Wakefield’s article was found “dishonest” by the General Medical Council.

He was later struck off and subsequently, in 2011, the British Medical Journal declared the story fraudulent.

Does it contain ingredients from pigs?

There are two types of MMR jabs: One with gelatin (animal/pig collagen), and one without it.

For some religious groups, the inclusion of pig products is not acceptable.

Those people should ask for the vaccine without gelatin.
