‘A bit embarrassing’ – Andy Murray breaks silence on future as Novak Djokovic’s coach after Australian Open exit

ANDY Murray says he will speak to Novak Djokovic in the coming days to discuss whether he will continue as his coach.

Djokovic’s Australian Open hopes ended in disappointment as he withdrew after losing the first set against Alexander Zverev due to the hamstring injury he suffered in the previous round against Carlos Alcaraz.

Murray said: “Me and Novak agreed that after the tournament we would speak. We’ll do that.”

Murray said he had enjoyed every moment of his time with Djokovic, having been asked in November if he would join his team.

He said: “At times it feels a little bit embarrassing that because of my relationship with Novak, how much people talk about that or when there’s a good result or a good performance that it’s because I’ve helped him.

“I’m fully aware that the team that is with him has done an incredible job over many, many years to allow him to still be competing at this level, at the age that he’s at.

“They’ve all been really, really helpful to me. They really welcomed me into the team. It’s been great to be a part of.

“I got to witness some amazing tennis, and one of the best matches that I’ve seen live against Alcaraz.”

Murray said he had learned a lot from his short time with Djokovic, but admitted he is only just beginning to understand what’s required of a top-level coach.

The Scot revealed: “It’s a steep learning curve for me as well. Obviously there’s a lot of things that as a player, you know things are different when you’re coaching.

“There’s a lot more that you need to help with in terms of communication around the team.

“You’re not just thinking about yourself like you are when you’re a player.

“I’ve certainly learned a lot but there’s a lot more still for me to learn, that’s for sure.”

And Murray said he had found it hard to watch Djokovic, knowing that he was suffering in pain.

He said: “When you get to that stage of the tournament, you feel like you’re getting very close to something very special, and it’s unfortunate if the body’s not responding in the way that you would like.

“With Novak there’s always hope with him because of how great a player he is and has found ways out of difficult situations before. It just wasn’t to be this time.”

Djokovic said he and Murray would discuss things in greater depth when the disappointment of withdrawing has subsided.

Murray added: “We both were disappointed with what just happened, so we didn’t talk about the future steps. We are so fresh off the court.

“I’ll definitely have a chat with Andy and thank him for being here with me. You know, give him my feedback, which is, of course, positive, and see how he feels and we make the next step.

“We are still hot-headed and disappointed, so it’s kind of hard to switch the page and start talking about what the next steps are.

“You know, I think we both need to cool off a little bit and then we’ll have a chat.”

Djokovic’s next scheduled event is in Doha, from 17-22 Feb, but the Serbian says he does not know how long he will be out.

Disabled girl, 13, with mental age of a toddler abused to death after being forced to live in foul makeshift caged bed

A DISABLED teenager, with the mental age of a three-year-old, was abused to death after her grandmother made her live in a horrifying makeshift cage.

Police said they found Melanie, 13, covered in bruises at her grandmother Virginia Lujan’s home in Tempe, Arizona.

Lujan, 55, has been accused of abusing her disabled granddaughter by keeping her in a cage covered in dirt and feces.

The teenager had been kept in a bunk bed where the bottom bed had been removed.

That lower section was then covered in bars and surrounded by baby cages.

Melanie’s horrifying condition was revealed to cops when they received a call on Tuesday night about the disabled teenager not breathing.

Her grandmother reportedly told cops that she had fallen down the stairs a few days ago but seemed fine.

Therefore, she reportedly did not give the girl medical aid at the time, according to AZ Family.

The 13-year-old was rushed to hospital on Tuesday night but tragically died on Wednesday morning.

Melanie’s mother, Jami Hodges, 33, claimed she did not know about the fall but said she was temporarily staying with her mom.

Four of Hodges’ five children had been in their grandmother’s care and reportedly were not attending school.

These children, aged between two and 15 were removed from the home, just off of Route 60.

Melanie’s mother and grandmother admitted to keeping the disabled girl in a cage, according to AZ Family.

It is unclear how long the girl had been kept in the cage but police said it could have been months or even years.

The pair were taken into custody on child abuse charges but Hodges was later released for further investigations.

Cops revealed additional charges could be filed against the pair.

“The tragic loss of a child is a profound reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the most vulnerable in our community,” Police Chief Kenneth McCoy said.

“Investigations like this demand meticulous attention to detail and sensitivity to the emotional toll it takes on everyone involved.”

Lujan’s neighbor Ciara Lessard revealed something strange she noticed while living next door.

“The kids just seemed a little different . A little scared, maybe,” Lessard said.

“Lots of kids are loud like mine, these kids were standoff-ish something was going on I can see it now looking back.

“I have a 13-year old special needs child that I lost a few years ago I can’t even imagine. I would never. I hope she rots in prison.”

Wrexham’s European dreams shattered by FA as Ryan Reynolds’ club BLOCKED from entering new competition

WREXHAM’s hopes of competing in Europe have been dashed.

It comes after the Football Association blocked attempts to allow clubs playing in the English leagues to participate in the Welsh League Cup.

The new-look Welsh League Cup has been granted a Conference League qualification spot by UEFA.

And the Football Association of Wales (FAW) had wanted the EFL‘s Welsh clubs – Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport – to participate.

However, the English FA board has rejected the proposal on the grounds it does not provide equal opportunity to other clubs in the English football pyramid.

A statement from the FA said: “The FA board has considered a request made by four Welsh clubs to take part in a restructured version of the FAW League Cup which would provide an opportunity to qualify for UEFA competition.

“As part of the request, the Welsh clubs would forfeit their existing right to qualify for UEFA club competitions through the English system whilst they remained members of the EFL.

“The Welsh clubs would then seek to qualify for UEFA competition via the English system should they be promoted to the Premier League.

“As a result of the request, the FA undertook a thorough consultation with stakeholders and invited submissions from the Welsh clubs.

“Following careful consideration, taking into account various factors including equal opportunity for clubs to participate in the same competitions, for the same rewards on an equal basis; concerns raised by stakeholders regarding competition integrity, fixture congestion and player welfare, and the impact on the standing of existing competitions, the FA board has rejected the request.

“It was noted that it is open to the Welsh clubs to choose whether or not to participate in the English or Welsh system based on their own assessment of the relative merits of participation in each system, but if they choose to participate in the English system they must do so on the same basis as the English clubs which participate in that system.”

If accepted the move would have handed the likes of Wrexham an additional revenue stream not accessible by their English EFL rivals.

The Red Dragons were the last Welsh EFL side to play in Europe via a Welsh competition, coming in 1995/96 through the Welsh Cup.

Since then, only Swansea have competed on the continent after winning the English League Cup in 2013.
