Dame Deborah James’ fund donates £1million for cutting-edge X-ray scanner at cancer hospital
DAME Deborah James’ fund donated £1million for a cutting-edge X-ray scanner at a cancer hospital.
The gift ensures the campaigning Sun columnist’s legacy lives on — two years after her death from bowel cancer.
The state-of-the-art interventional radiology machine arrived at the Royal Marsden Hospital in West London for Christmas.
There to see it were Dame Debs’ mum Heather, dad Alistair and husband Sebastien Bowen.
Alistair said his daughter, who launched the Bowelbabe Fund weeks before her death at 40 in 2022, would be thrilled.
He told The Sun: “It was brilliant to see something so modern and cutting-edge in place, ready to help others.
“It’s concrete proof of what the Bowelbabe Fund can achieve.”
The machine uses imaging techniques — championed by Dame Debs — to diagnose and treat cancer in a minimally invasive way, often instead of surgery.
Heather said: “Deborah wanted to fund research to help find better ways of treating cancer, so this is a really fitting way in which her legacy will continue on.”
The mum of two’s fund has raised £16million-plus. This Christmas was the family’s third without her.
Alistair added: “We all miss her terribly but Deborah loved Christmas and she’d be devastated if we let our grief ruin this special time.”

She wrote: “What a special day. Christmas is so much better now with babies, but yes, I collapsed on the bed last night with exhaustion.”
But she added: “I wouldn’t have it any other way. Look at the spread my mum cooked! Wow. I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.”
The former TOWIE star gave birth to her son Landon in October, and three months of motherhood have taken their toll on her.
The young family is now based in Germany, where Oliver plays for Werder Bremen.
However, they are back in the UK for Christmas, visiting family and friends, and Megan’s mum hosted.
In 2009, Megan and her band Harmony reached the semi-finals of the third series of Britain’s Got Talent.
Ten years later, she joined The X Factor Celebrity.
Many fans remember her rise to fame on The Only Way Is Essex, and she formerly dated Pete Wicks.
This led to an appearance on Ex On The Beach and, later, Celebrity Big Brother.
She has appeared on various TV programmes, including Celebrity MasterChef and Celebs Go Dating.
As a parent, she spends her days documenting her role.
Other posts on her Instagram feed show her parenting journey and her new life in Germany.

Who is Dua Lipa’s fiancé Callum Turner?
CALLUM Turner is a world-famous actor who is newly engaged to one of the biggest pop stars of the century.
Pals of the pair told the Sun Callum proposed to girlfriend Dua Lipa during the 2024 festive period and plans to celebrate with friends and family in London on New Year’s Eve.
London beginnings
Callum was born on February 15, 1990, in Hammersmith but grew up in Chelsea.
He was raised by his single mom, Rose, and would often spend his evenings playing football.
Talking about his childhood, Callum said: “The thing I always find interesting in my childhood was, yeah, I was growing up on an estate, single mum, working-class, but then I also had all these colourful characters around.
“It wasn’t about navigating two worlds.
“There were three, four, five more.”
However, Callum has said that, although his upbringing was “tough”, it was also “brilliant” and “beautiful”.
Callum’s big break
He launched his career in 2010, when he started modelling for high-street brands including Next and Reebok.
After a string of small parts, he finally landed a lead role in John Boorman’s film Queen and Country which debuted at Cannes in 2014.
He also starred in E4’s Gluye as Eli which led the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to name him as a Breakthrough Brit.
Most fans will recognise him as Eddie Redmayne’s on-screen brother Theseus Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts series.
Fantastic Beasts is a spin-off of the Harry Potter film franchise.
During this time, he dated Vanessa Kirby who rocketed to fame with her portrayal of a young Princess Margaret in Netflix’s The Crown.
Vanessa and Callum then broke up in 2019.
Superstar romance
Callum started dating pop superstar Dua Lipa in 2024.
On January 10, 2024, TMZ released a video of Callum slow dancing with the singer at the Masters of the Air premiere.
Just a week later, they went public with their relationship after being seen kissing outside a restaurant in Los Angeles.
A source told TMZ: “Dua and Callum spend almost all their time together and are nearly inseparable.
“They travel together, they’ve met each other’s families, and they’re very serious about one another.”
The sourced added that Dua is an “independent woman” and that she “couldn’t be happier than she is with Callum”.
Dua Lipa will be the star of An Evening with Dua Lipa on December 8, 2024.
Fans can catch the show, which will feature hits including Levitating and Houdini, live when it airs at 8pm.
A festive proposal
Dua took a break from her massive stadium tour to spend Christmas with Callum and family back in the UK.
After a whole year together, sources have told The Sun Callum proposed to the Houdini singer and “they couldn’t be happier”.
“Dua has had one of the best years of her career professionally and this is the cherry on the cake.
“Callum is such a solid support for Dua and they make such a wonderful couple. Their family and friends are so happy. It’s been an amazing Christmas for them.”
And the timing coudn’t be better, with The Sun last week revealing the pair were planning to host family and friends for a huge New Year’s Eve bash in London.
Outnumbered fans in tears as Brockman family hit with tragic cancer shock as show returns for Xmas special after 8 years
OUTNUMBERED fans were left in tears as the Brockman family were hit by some terrible cancer news as the family finally made an on-screen comeback after eight years.
Viewers have been waiting for years in order to see the Brockman’s back in action but were left rocked when it was revealed that Pete was suffering from prostate cancer.
Outnumbered returned for the first time in eight years[/caption] Dad Pete was hit by some terrible cancer news[/caption]As the Christmas special episode kicked off, fans saw how Sue and Pete had been living in a brand new much smaller house since Jake, Ben and Karen had all flown the next.
But it wasn’t just those two living there – with the infamous Jane having spent a total of NINE weeks lodging alongside the couple – much to their obvious chagrin.
As the three kids eventually made their way to the house one-by-one, it was clear that Pete had some news that he needed to get off his chest.
He and Sue had been seen chatting about his ‘secret’ which was eventually revealed to be a heartbreaking health diagnosis – prostate cancer.
As Pete struggled to find the right time to tell his children, the news came tumbling out with Jake and Karen sat on the sofa and Ben via FaceTime with a very dodgy connection.
With Ben on the line, Karen said: “Mum and Dad have something they need to tell us.”
Ben quipped back: “Are they going to stop paying for our mobile phones?”
As Pete brushed off the comment, he went on to confess: “So the good news is that they’ve caught it early and I’m very likely to be fine But I’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer.”
In typical Outnumbered-style, Ben was left causing chaos in the moment when he admitted that the line had cut off after “so”.
Ben said: “Sorry I missed that, you broke up after so!”
As Pete said he had cancer a number of times, either Ben’s connection broke-up or the nightmare neighbours from next door were left causing a whole lot of noise.
Amid the laughs, fans took to X to express their shock at Pete being diagnosed with the terrible illness.
One fan said online: “Turned on #Outnumbered to have a laugh. Sitting on my own after losing my husband to prostate cancer and had to turn it off. Who the hell thought that this was a good subject for a comedy? Just NO!!”
Another added: “It’s Christmas; why must everything be sad and depressing?? Whoever wrote this: WHY did you make the CHRISTMAS episode based around cancer? What’s your problem?”
As a third said: “Pete with cancer. It’s not funny anymore.”
Before a fourth wrote: “random cancer storyline that wasnt resolved – happy christmas?”
Elsewhere in the episode, fans got to meet the next generation of Brockman’s for the first time thanks to Jake’s enthusiastic daughter, Zara.
The youngster had fans in stitches thanks to her roleplaying as a hyena throughout her time at grandma Sue and granddad Pete’s house.
Her dinosaur impressions with Pete and Sue also had the family in fits of laughter during the closing moments of the episode.
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer affects a small, walnut shaped gland that sits underneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra – the tube carrying pee outside the body.
It usually grows bigger as you get older.
The prostate’s main job is to help make semen – the fluid that carries sperm.
Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any signs or symptoms – that’s why it’s important to know about your risk.
Possible symptoms include:
- Difficulty starting to urinate or emptying your bladder
- A weak flow when you urinate
- A feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied properly
- Dribbling urine after you finish urinating
- Needing to urinate more often than usual, especially at night
- A sudden need to urinate – you may sometimes leak urine before you get to the toilet
If you do notice changes in the way you urinate, this is more likely to be a sign of an enlarged prostate, which is very common and non-cancerous.
But it’s still a good idea to get it checked out.
In the UK, about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Some factors may mean you’re more likely to get it.
This includes:
- Getting older – it mainly affects men aged 50 or over
- Having a family history of prostate cancer
- Being Black
If you have any of these risk factors or if you have any symptoms, speak to your GP.
They can talk to you about your risk, and about the tests that are used to diagnose prostate cancer.
