Grand National’s most shocking moments… from streakers to gangster feuds and ‘greatest disaster’ that cost bookies £75m

THOUSANDS of racing fans will be descending on Aintree for this Saturday’s Grand National – and millions more will be tuning in to watch from home.

With 30 fences to jump over the more than two mile long course, drama during the race is guaranteed.

But given the very first Grand National took place way back in 1839, there’s been plenty of shocking moments off the course as well during its 185 year-long history.

There’s the daredevil streakers who’ve given us all something to laugh at.

But there have also been the more serious moments – including terrifying bomb threats that led to a mass-evacuation.

Meanwhile, some races have come to a conclusion in a pretty strange way, including the Queen Mother’s horse performing a bellyflop, and 2001’s race which saw only four horses end up finishing.

Join us as we take a look back at the Grand National’s wildest moments over the years.

‘National that never was

The year 1993 looked set to be a Grand National like any other – but it would go down a disaster.

Just as the race was due to begin, 15 animal rights protesters invaded the course.

Though this only led to the start being delayed, it was an omen of what was to come.

An initial attempt to kick things off came to an abrupt halt when several riders became tangled in the starting tape.

At the second attempt, the same thing happened again – but this time, when starter Keith Brown attempted to wave his flag, it didn’t unfurl.

As a result, 30 of the 39 riders raced around the track, oblivious to the fact it had been declared a false start.

In the end, The Jockey Club was forced to declare the race void – leading this year to be dubbed “the National that never was”.

Racing commentator Sir Peter O’Sullevan described it as “the greatest disaster in the history of the Grand National.”

Bookies were also forced to refund an estimated £75million in bets that had been placed.

Bomb danger

In 1997, the Grand National was scheduled to be held mid-afternoon on April 5.

But just under an hour before the race was scheduled to start, a threatening call was made to Aintree University hospital saying that there was a bomb planted within the racecourse.

Two minutes later this was followed up by a similar call made to the police’s control room in nearby Bootle.

Both calls reportedly used code words associated with the IRA.

It was a threat to be taken seriously. Only a few weeks before, an IRA bomb had detonated on a railway line in Cheshire.

And just a year previous, they’d carried out the devastating truck bombing of Manchester city centre.

Police immediately evacuated the public, who had to make their way out via the course.

Meanwhile, the race itself was postponed by two days and held the following Monday instead.

Gang connections

Irish trainer Gordon Elliot trained two-time Grand National winner Tiger Roll and is considered to be one of the greats in his field.

But in 2021 a photo of the trainer leaked, which showed him sat astride a dead horse, posing to the camera.

It since emerged that the photo’s leaking might have been an act of revenge by a notorious Irish gangster[/caption]

He was heavily criticised for the stunt, with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board hitting him with a twelve-month ban.

However, later emerged that the photo – which was taken in 2019 – may in fact have been leaked by Irish gangsters in an effort to destroy Elliot’s career.

Notorious criminal John Boyland was the owner of Labaik, a horse trained by Eliiot.

But his celebrations after Labaik won a 2017 race in Cheltenham drew attention from police who determined that the racehorse had been purchased with money made from crime.

Trainer Elliot, who had no involvement in nor knowledge of Boylan’s crimes, then refused to work with him any further nor train the horses of his associates.

This then sparked a feud between the pair – reportedly leading to the leak of the shocking photo.

Royals rumbled

Talking Sport
Devon Lock lost as a result of a bizarre jump it made just yards from the finish line[/caption]

The year was 1956, and the horse Devon Loch was the talk of the town.

Not only had it already won two races that season and come third in the Cheltenham National Hunt Handicap Chase, but it was owned by the Queen Mother.

After its closest competitors fell early on, it seemed destined to win and was out in front for the final stretch.

But then, just 40 yards from the finish line, it inexplicably jumped and made a belly-flop landing – right in front of the Royal Box.

Rival E.S.B. then overtook and won, and it remains a mystery as to why it performed such a bizarre move.

Unfazed though no doubt dismayed, the Queen Mother then remarked: “Oh, that’s racing!”.

Busty displays

With the eyes of the world focused in on Aintree, why not make the most of the day and show off a bit?

At least, that’s what went through the mind of a few punters who decided to get their kit off.

The pair were fined £80 each[/caption]

Back in 2011, thousands were stunned when pals Gemma Porter and Louise Van-Marle stripped bare, then dodged stewards and made their way on to the track.

Both unfortunately ended up with £80 fines.

Then in 2016, another man thought he’d repeat the trick – but an attempt to make the first jump left him faceplanted in the mud.

Leave it to the professionals!

Virtually the same

Sometimes it isn’t a world war that disrupts racing, but a global pandemic – as was the case in 2020 when Covid hit, which saw the race cancelled.

In its place? A virtual race produced using CGI.

But it wasn’t just some naff recreation. The race used algorithms to model the behaviour of the 40 horses who were considered most likely to have competed.

In the end, Potters Corner was victorious – winner of the 2019 Welsh Grand National.

And despite being virtual, the race was still full of drama, with long-time frontrunner Aso falling towards the end.

It even featured virtual ambulances following the riders around the course, just like the real thing.

A virtual race of previous champions was also televised shortly before, which was won by Red Rum.

Bookmakers’ profits went to NHS Charities Together.

Wartime woes

For three years during World War One, Aintree was taken over by the War Office – so the races were held at Gatwick instead.

It wasn’t an airport back then, though, with today’s modern runway built on top of what was a racecourse.

The first of these races was held in 1916 and called the Racecourse Association Steeplechase, while the races in the following two years were called the War National Steeplechase.

However, these days the races that were held at Gatwick are often not recognised as official “Grand Nationals”, and the results from these years tend to be left off winners’ lists.

Facts about the Grand National

EVERY year the Grand National sees millions of racing fans tune in to soak up the action.

  • The first Grand National took place in 1839, with a horse named Lottery winning the race.
  • Obstacles like Becher’s Brook, The Chair, and the Canal Turn are renowned for their difficulty and have become iconic in the racing world.
  • Red Rum is celebrated for winning the Grand National three times (1973, 1974, 1977) and finishing second twice (1975, 1976).
  • In 1977, Charlotte Brew became the first woman to ride in the Grand National, breaking gender barriers in the sport.
  • Rachael Blackmore made history in 2021 as the first female jockey to win the Grand National, riding Minella Times to victory.
  • An estimated 500 to 600million viewers watch the race worldwide.
  • The race covers about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs, with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps.

Elton John reveals he ‘can’t watch TV, read or see his sons playing sports’ in heartbreaking health update

ELTON John has revealed the “distressing” impact of his battle with blindness as he admitted he “can’t read” or see his kids play.

It came just days after The Sun exclusively reported how the ailing star, 78, can no longer sign autographs.

Pop legend Elton lost vision in his right eye in July after contracting an infection on holiday in the South of France, and at the time admitted his left eye is “not the greatest.”

Now the Tiny Dancer hitmaker has told of the impact of his condition, and told an interviewer from The Times: “I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read.

“I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”

Elton and husband David Furnish, 62, share sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, aged 12.

Too Low For Zero singer Elton added of his blindness: “It’s distressing. You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have.

“I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here [his left eye.]

“So you say to yourself, just get on with it.”

ONGOING BATTLE

In December, Elton said he was unable to watch his new musical version of The Devil Wears Prada.

At the time, he said: “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.

“But I love to hear it.”

And interviewed on Good Morning America he added of his condition: “It kind of floored me, and I can’t see anything.

I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”

“I can do something like this [interview] but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for start.”

GO SLOW

Pals have now urged him to “slow down” amid further fears for his wellbeing.

Previously, Elton joked how there is “not much left” of him following joint replacement surgeries and the removal of his tonsils, appendix and prostate.

The legendary singer — who has also been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and has had one hip and two knees replaced — was supposed to take it easy after his stamina- defying, 330-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which ended in 2023.

He recently expressed fears he will not live long enough to see his boys Zachary and Elijah marry.

Insiders reckon he needs to ease up if he is going to survive to witness those happy events.

A source told The Sun: “Elton’s friends are seriously concerned about how much he has taken on and believe it is having a major impact on his health.

“Quite a few people who he is close to have now encouraged him to slow down because he has been busier than ever this year.”

Elton always had an incredible work ethic, releasing 13 albums between 1970 and 1975.

He struggled a bit last time out, finishing second to McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri at the Chinese Grand Prix.

This season looked to be a thriller before the action even started, and with the top four split by just 10 points after three races, F1 looks to be living up to its billing in 2025.

Verstappen, George Russell and Piastri sit second, third and fourth respectively, with rookie driver Kimi Antonelli in fifth.

New Ferrari star Lewis Hamilton converted a pole to a win in the Chinese Sprint Race but was then DISQUALIFIED from the main race.

That left him lingering down in ninth, one point above Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.

The Ferrari pair will be looking to put some more points on the board as they travel to Suzuka to take on the Japanese Grand Prix.

Noughties TV star, 48 has barely aged a day 22 years after hit show, four kids and new career

SHE was a very recognisable face on TV back in the nineties and noughties thanks to a string of successful roles.

And it seems she is just as recognisable now as she’s barely aged a day since appearing on Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

Soleil Moon Frye, now 48, is still in the industry but is better known for her directing work these days.

She does however look almost exactly the same to her days of playing Roxie King, Sabrina Spellman’s roommate and close friend.

Soleil landed her role in Sabrina alongside Melissa Joan Hart in 2000 and stayed on it until the series came to an end in 2003.

Before that she was a well-loved child actress and when she was just seven she landed the role of Penelope “Punky” Brewster in the NBC sitcom Punky Brewster.

She actually beat Melissa Joan Hart to the role, before she ended up working with her.

Soleil was married to producer Jason Goldberg from 1998 – to 2022 and the pair had four children.

She launched her own kids clothing line and even a book about her parenting journey.

Last year she delighted fans when she reunited with her Sabrina co-stars, including Elisa Donovan and Nate Richert.

In 2021 she reprised her role as Punky – who  is now an independent, divorced mum of three kids.

Nearly four decades after its small-screen debut, the show explored Punky’s complex relationship with ex-husband Travis, played by 90s hunk Freddie Prinze Jr.

Soleil hit headlines that same year when she revealed in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, that her “first consensual sexual experience was with Charlie Sheen.”

She had just turned 18 at the time, while the Two And A Half Men star was 29.

Despite their age gap, the Saved By The Bell alum said Charlie, 55, was “so kind and loving.”

She added the two have maintained a friendship in the years since.

‘Being released wasn’t easy’ – Former Arsenal starlet who played with Bukayo Saka now in Championship relegation scrap

OLLIE TANNER used to play alongside Arsenal star Bukayo Saka but ended up in non-league before being snapped up by Cardiff.

And now the 22-year-old winger is hoping to repay the Bluebirds’ faith by helping them avoid relegation into League One.

Cardiff travel to QPR this afternoon sitting third from bottom after Derby beat Preston on Wednesday night to dump the Welsh side into the drop zone.

Tanner is enjoying his second full season playing Championship football. And he is in no mood to fall back down a division.

He said: “We shouldn’t be in this position but we must get ourselves out of it. Cardiff should be a club challenging for promotion to the Premier League where it belongs — not fighting relegation.

“Some games this season, we’ve been unlucky. But other times we’ve not been good enough.

“Conceding poor goals has been a problem a lot of the time and it’s our own doing.

“We work so hard to create and score goals then concede easy ones.

“It’s the most frustrating thing. We are where we are and we must correct that, stop letting them in and score more. It’s the basics.”

Tanner is mentally tough for the fight ahead.

He experienced the glamour of being at Arsenal and the hard yards of slugging it out in non-league with the likes of Bromley, Folkestone and Lewes.

The winger played alongside Saka in the Gunners’ youth team during his six years with the North Londoners.

He said: “Saka was unbelievable — right from the first game I played with him.

“He was always the one that was going to the top. It was a great education at Arsenal but being released by them wasn’t easy.

“I ended up in non-league and that taught me a lot. It’s so easy to lose your way.

“You either sink or swim. Thankfully, I swam.

“I found a club in Lewes, who were playing in the Isthmian Premier, and a manager in Tony Russell and his assistant Joe Vines who helped me massively.

“They are a big reason I’m now playing in the Championship.”

Tanner signed from Lewes three years ago and had a tough first season where he had to not only adapt to training full-time rather than part-time but also cope with a five-division leap.

He added: “There were lots of things where I had to sharpen up but I’ve got there now.

“It’s a hard division but I’ve got lots of games under my belt.

“All focus now is on staying up.”
