Labour’s Sadiq Khan accused of hypocrisy over zero hour contracts

SIR Sadiq Khan was last night accused of “rank hypocrisy” as it emerged his City Hall employs workers on zero hour contracts – despite Labour plans to ban them.

The Labour London Mayor has attacked zero hour contracts in the past, saying they fuel instability and insecurity.

But shocking new figures reveal his City Hall hired 32 youngsters on zero hour contracts in 2023-2024.

They are Peer Outreach Workers – employees aged 15 to 25 that engage with the public to help inform the Mayor’s policies.

Tory ex-Mayoral candidate Susan Hall – who discovered the figures – fumed: “Sadly, this is the type of rank hypocrisy that we have come to expect of the Mayor.”

She said if the contracts are “good enough for the Mayor, they should be good enough for all of us.”

Zero-hour contracts let bosses hire staff without being required to provide a minimum number of hours to the employee.

Businesses say this lets them hire more staff and also gives employees flexibility to pick and choose their hours.

But critics say they are exploitative because workers are not guaranteed a basic salary.

Sir Keir Starmer’s government plans to ban “exploitative zero hour contracts” in their controversial new workers rights bill.

Although details of what the ban means in practice have been delayed for consultation.

Business chiefs have slammed the Bill, while the government’s own analysis has warned it will cost UK plc a whopping £5billion.

Some Cabinet ministers are pushing for the Bill to be watered down to save businesses.

But Mr Khan has told the PM to ignore the “siren voices” and “oppose any effort to water down this legislation from the same siren voices who opposed the minimum wage”.

A spokesman for the Greater London Authority said: “Peer Outreach Workers are a group of young Londoners who volunteer to engage and gather the opinions of other young people in the capital.

“This is a voluntary role and is not intended as employment. The GLA recognises and values the time that these young people give, and they are therefore reimbursed for it.

“It is for administrative purposes that their contracts are set up as such and this is longstanding practice that was also in place under the previous Mayor.”

I’m dubbed ‘the most irritating man in the Premier League’… I don’t give a s*** what you think

JASON TINDALL has opened up on his title as the Premier League’s “most irritating man”.

Tindall, 47, was in the dugout alongside Eddie Howe as Newcastle won their first major domestic trophy in the Carabao Cup for 70 years against Liverpool.

He has a brash attitude which means many rival fans do not like him[/caption]

Howe’s No.2 has been a loyal companion to the ex-Bournemouth manager for 17 years, a quality many bemoan has been lost in modern football.

They were thrown into management together when Bournemouth faced relegation from League Two, “because there was nobody else who would do it”.

The pair were nothing more than team-mates at Bournemouth, with neither having the same friendship circle during their playing days at the Cherries.

Yet Tindall says they have worked together every day sharing the same office from 8am to 6pm, meaning, in Tindall’s words, he has “spent more time with Eddie than anyone else in my life,” including their wives.

However, there are few assistant managers in the country, maybe even in world football, who seem to get under the skin of rival supporters more than Tindall.

He has an unapologetically brash and confrontational attitude when on the touchline, earning him the nickname, “Mad Dog”.

It often ends up with him being highlighted whenever something happens pitchside, whether he was the original centre of attention or not.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Tindall has revealed he actually loves his role as one of football’s best wind-up merchants.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

He said: “I don’t exactly know what that Mad Dog thing is or why it came about. It’s probably to do with the way I am on the sidelines.

“I’m very, very passionate, I’ll do anything to win and that’s probably a good thing. Eddie isn’t very emotional on the touchline and I think it is important that I am the way I am.

“If I wasn’t, that is something he would probably have to be and there is so much other stuff that is important on a match day that he needs to focus on. I take that side of things away.

“When he was younger Eddie used to get much more involved in those arguments, but it has happened naturally, it’s me who does it.

“I very rarely think I’ve crossed the line. I will vent my frustration if I’m not happy with certain things. I don’t think I’m disrespectful.

“Obviously, the opposition want to win too and sometimes they will say things that I don’t agree with. I will let that be known. If I’m there to be that person to have an argument, that is what I’m going to do.”

Tindall is the coach responsible for the Magpies’ defensive shape, training and designing set pieces this season.

Only six teams — Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Everton — have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle in the league.

Asked about his perception outside of the Newcastle faithful where he is not the most liked person, Tindall is actually more than happy to “upset” people, declaring: “I do not give a s*** what people think.”

He said: “It’s not my intention to attract attention if that makes sense.

“People say I’ve got too high a profile for an assistant manager, how that has come about, but again, I don’t take any notice of it or think I’m going to do this to gain more attention.

“The outside world can say what they say, but it’s just me. I just go about my business.

“This isn’t new and Ed will say the same, the way I am at Newcastle is exactly the same as I was at Bournemouth.

“It’s part of my character, I don’t care what people think [including opposition managers].

“I know who I am, the job I do and the influence I have over a lot of things. And the only thing I care about is doing my job the best I can for Newcastle United.

“I don’t care if I’m upsetting people along the way. People will probably judge the way I look, what I wear and how I behave. None of this is new to me.

“The reality is I do not give a s*** what people think and what people say because I’m confident in my own skin, I’m confident in what I do.

“If you don’t know me, what you think doesn’t matter in the slightest.”

On his relationship with Howe, Tindall added: “We are different personalities, completely different characters.

“He’s an introvert, I’m the extrovert, that’s obvious, but we have an excellent working relationship. We are totally honest with each other.

“We have different opinions, we disagree, but I will always respect that he has the final say.

“Whatever arguments we have, it stays behind closed doors and when we step out of the office, we speak as one. I will always back his decision. That’s important.

“That is the loyalty I have to him and have had for many, many years. He trusts me, we trust each other implicitly. I’m incredibly loyal to Eddie, he gets the best out of me and I hope I bring the best out of him.

“We see football the same way, we want to play the same way. We instinctively know what the other person wants, what they are thinking. Our principles are the same.

“As a football brain we think the same. We know what a top manager Eddie is, but there is a lot of pressure on him, the media, the expectations, the football decisions, I’m here to support him.

“You need people around you that you can trust, people you can lean on and we have that relationship.

“If he’s having a bad day, and look, he’s got a lot better at dealing with those the more experienced he has become, but it’s my job to lift him when it is needed.

“It’s my job to take some of that pressure away.”

Indeed, Tindall admits he and Howe don’t “see each other as friends”, but that they need each other to succeed.

He describes the relationship as a “good marriage”, supporting one another but saying socialising together afterwards would be “too much”.

Tindall was given the reins for management once, in 2020 when Howe stepped down as Bournemouth were relegated from the Premier League.

But he lasted only one season and has no intention of stepping back into the main seat in the dugout, instead being happy to be Howe’s No.2 since they were reunited at St. James’ Park three years ago.

Tindall says the emotion of Newcastle make them “the perfect football club for us,” explaining that he and Howe wanted to bring back the essence of Kevin Keegan‘s “entertainers” of the 1990s.

On winning the cup and looking to the future, Tindall added: “Winning the [Carabao] cup final, it meant more to me to give the city what it always wanted than for me as a personal achievement.

“It’s a city that does that to you. It has brought something out of me, it has tapped into my personality because Ed and I have that same passion. It is almost life and death here and that is how we see the game too.

He continued: “When you win one, you want more. The great teams go again, that is what separates them from the good ones.

“We want to build a great team here. You know after we won at Wembley, it was a very emotional moment for us both.

“To have started at the bottom with Bournemouth, to go through the leagues together and to have finally won a trophy, I think we both appreciated how special that was and how much we had achieved together.

“I wouldn’t want to have done it any other way or with anyone else than Ed. We have been on a remarkable journey together that we don’t want to stop.”

Fans watched as the remaining contestants battled it out to remain in the competition.

The latest episode kicked off as the were tasked with flicking elastic bands at a balloon to dislodge it from a podium.

As the game progressed, Freddie Cashbolt from Staffordshire Moorlands was visibly struggling but then managed to knock his balloon.

However, eagle-eyed Adam Thomas pointed out how he had accidentally crossed the white marker line during the game.

He was then made to retry but the 26-year-old ended up not successfully knocking his balloon from the podium and was eliminated from the competition.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “A bit harsh on Freddie there.”

A second said: “Freddie thought he had, but not for the foot over the line & that has big time cost him HUGE. He’s out.”

“Not seen this before – are they going to explain what’s happening or do we guess,” said a third.

99 To Beat sees 100 people go head-to-head for the same prize pot.

In order to win, they must beat the other 99 players and avoid coming last at all costs.

Meanwhile, this week it was revealed two This Morning stars were snubbed from hosting the series.

Jordan North and Alison Hammond revealed they both previously tried out for the slot but it didn’t work out.

Who are the Thomas Brothers?

The three Thomas brothers - Ryan, Adam and Scott have become recognisable faces to TV viewers through their appearances on different shows. Let's take a look at the trio's individual journeys.

  • Ryan Thomas: The eldest of the brothers, Ryan is perhaps best known for playing Jason Grimshaw in Coronation Street from 2000 to 2016. He has also ventured into reality TV, winning Celebrity Big Brother in 2018 and Dancing On Ice in 2023. Before retiring from acting, Ryan also had a guest role in Australian soap Neighbours in 2018.
  • He is engaged to Lucy Mecklenburgh, with the couple having met while taking part in Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls.
  • Adam Thomas: Also an actor, Adam is known for playing Donte Charles in Waterloo Road (2006-2009, 2023-present) for the BBC, as well as Adam Barton in Emmerdale from 2009 to 2018.
  • Adam has participated in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (finishing third) and Strictly Come Dancing (finishing ninth). After his I’m A Celebrity stint, Adam later hosted spin-off show Extra Camp for one series in 2019, alongside former campmate Joel Dommett and actress Emily Atack.
  • Scott Thomas: Twin brother to Adam, the third Thomas brother, Scott, competed in series two of Love Island in 2016. He eventually coupled up with Kady McDermott, with the pair going on to finish third overall.
  • He set up food and business Food4Thoughts during lockdown, with twin Adam putting £100k of his own cash into it. Unfortunately, the business ultimately went bust after it racked up debts of £366,143.

Russell Brand laps up Florida sun in beach trip after vowing to return to UK to face rape and sexual assault charges

RUSSELL Brand was pictured lapping up the sun in Florida after vowing to return to the UK to face rape and sexual assault charges.

The comedian and actor, 49, has been charged with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault.

Brand has previously denied the accusations, and said all his sexual relationships were “absolutely always consensual”.

The TV personality has now been captured enjoying some time in the sun in Florida despite the accusations.

The 49-year-old was seen grinning as he jumped into the sky-blue water in Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island.

Brand, who wore a pair of purple swimming trunks, appeared unfazed by recent developments.

Detectives began investigating Brand after receiving a number of allegations in September 2023.

The Metropolitan Police said the charges relate to four women between 1999 and 2005.

He is charged with the rape of a woman in 1999 in the Bournemouth area and the oral rape and sexual assault of a woman in 2004 in the Westminster area of London.

He has also been charged with indecently assaulting a woman in 2001 and sexually assaulting another woman between 2004 and 2005 – both offences are alleged to have taken place in Westminster, London.

Brand will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers.

“The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.

“A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk.

“Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis at 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.”

Jaswant Narwal, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “We have today authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Russell Brand with a number of sexual offences.

“We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023.

“We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.

“These relate to reported non-recent offences between 1999 and 2005, involving four women.

“He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for a first hearing on Friday May 2, 2025.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Brand was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry between 2010 and 2012.

He hosted shows on radio and television, wrote memoirs charting his battles with drugs and alcohol and appeared in several Hollywood movies.

In recent years, Brand has largely disappeared from mainstream media but has built up a large following online with videos mixing wellness and conspiracy theories.

He recently said he had moved to the United States.

Inside Nketiah’s nightmare cameo as he’s booked for diving within minute before he’s recklessly sent off in wild game

EDDIE NKETIAH suffered “one of the worst cameos ever” after being sent off within TEN minutes of Crystal Palace’s dramatic 2-1 win over Brighton.

The striker was booked for simulation inside the box within 60 SECONDS of replacing goalscorer Jean-Philippe Mateta inside 68 minutes.

Fans inside Selhurst Park applauded Nketiah as he walked off down the tunnel[/caption]

To make matters worse, Nketiah was through on goal and could’ve unleashed a shot at Seagulls keeper Bart Verbruggen with his first touch of the game.

And just nine minutes later, the former Arsenal star was shown a second yellow for a high boot on Jan Paul Van Hecke in the 78th minute.

In total, Nketiah had just two touches of the ball and completed only two passes during his disaster ten minutes before being sent off.

He failed to win any of his duels in the heated 3pm derby, before losing two 50-50 battles.

While fans inside Selhurst Park applauded a gutted Nketiah as he walked off down the tunnel, others online were far less supportive, with the game in the balance at 2-1.

One wrote: “Hats off to Nketiah for one of the worst cameos in history.”

A second said: “Did Nketiah really just do that?😔

But loads backed him, writing: “Nketiah didn’t even dive. There was clear contact. He also pulled out of the second. Harsh.”

Eddie Nketiah's match statistics vs Brighton: 10 mins played, 2 passes, 2 touches, 0 duels won, 2 duels lost, 1 foul conceded.

Meanwhile, Van Hecke himself was handed the final red card of agame which saw ref Anthony Taylor dish out THREE.

Palace defender Marc Guehi was given his marching orders in between them.

The 24-year-old soon followed Nketiah after also receiving a second yellow for catching Brajan Gruda with his studs.

The England star’s second yellow came minutes after medics rushed onto the pitch to help Maxence Lacroix after a sickening head clash with Joao Pedro.

Meanwhile, two stunning efforts from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daniel Munoz, either side of a Danny Welbeck leveller, secured all three points for Oliver Glasner’s side.

The Eagles moved to within four points of Fabian Hurzeler’s side with a game in hand.

Labour MP arrested on suspicion of rape and child sex offences as he’s quizzed by cops

A PROMINENT Labour MP and former minister has been arrested on suspicion of rape and child sex offences.

Labour last night named Dan Norris – who’s been regularly  pictured alongside Sir Keir Starmer – in a statement which confirmed he had been suspended from the party.

Dan Norris, Labour MP, seen in his car.

The MP, pictured with Keir Starmer, has been suspended from the Labour Party

Cops arrested Norris, 65, MP for Somerset and Hanham, on Friday over claims of historic sexual attacks on a girl and a rape allegation from the 2020s.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed he had also been held on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Norris, who is an NSPCC-trained child protection officer, won his seat from Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg in the July 2024 election.

The MP – picture looking glum at the wheel of his car near his West Country home yesterday – had previously served as an MP for Wansdyke from 1997 to 2010.

He became Mayor of the West of England in 2021 but cannot run again this year due to being a serving MP.

After Labour swept to power last summer, Sir Keir welcomed Norris and other regional leaders to a Downing Street meeting.

Norris – pictured sitting round the Cabinet Office table with Mr Starmer and Deputy Leader Angela Rayner – then praised the PM for hosting the summit.

He said: “The Prime Minister meeting regional mayors is a positive example of the new government hitting the ground running.

“I have been delivering on skills, the environment and transport for the last four years and look forward to working with a Labour government with the same priorities.”

He met Sir Keir again last October at a Council of Nations and Regions.

And – after he was elected West of England Mayor in 2021 – Sir Keir joined Norris on a visit to the Royal Portbury Dock in Avonmouth, Bristol.

The pair, both in hard hats, were pictured chatting and laughing together on the trip which also included a visit to a South Gloucestershire and Stroud College campus.

Afterwards, Sir Keir said: “Dan Norris, the newly elected West of England Metro Mayor, has a relentless focus on jobs.

PRAISE FROM KEIR

“He’ll support businesses like the Bristol Port Company – they’re investing in young people through apprenticeships.

“Dan will put the people of the West of England at the heart of everything he does.”

But it is understood the Labour Party Whip has been withdrawn from Norris amid the police probe.

A senior source said: “This has sent shockwaves around the party and everyone, particularly those who know Dan, are stunned.

Norris has also been held on suspicion of misconduct in public office

“But the party has acted very quickly in suspending him and they have to be extremely robust on these issues.”

A Labour Party spokesman said: “Dan Norris MP was immediately suspended by the Labour Party upon being informed of his arrest.

We cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.”

Norris was arrested and interviewed at a police station near his constituency home before being bailed.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed detectives were carrying out a “sensitive” investigation after the case was referred by a different force.

The claims against the girl are said to have taken place in the 2000s, with a more recent allegation of rape.

Norris – a campaigner against bullying and blood sports – will be barred from the parliamentary estate at Westminster after rules around politicians under investigation were tightened last year.

This has sent shockwaves around the party and everyone, particularly those who know Dan, are stunned

Senior Labour source

Unmarried Norris, who lives in North-East Somerset, is the chairman of the League Against Cruel Sports and campaigns on issues including hunting, pollution, and school breakfast clubs.

He regularly posts pictures of himself and his pet labrador, Angel, on social media and in February supported national Love Your Pets Day.

He has served as the Parliamentary-Under Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and the Environment and as a Labour Whip.

His official website highlights his commitment to the West Country and issues he campaigns on.

It says: “His deep local roots mean he knows the West of England is a unique and wholly special place.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “In December 2024, we received a referral from another police force relating to alleged non-recent child sex offences having been committed against a girl.

“Most of the offences are alleged to have occurred in the 2000s, but we’re also investigating an alleged offence of rape from the 2020s.

“An investigation, led by officers within Operation Bluestone, our dedicated rape and serious sexual assault investigation team, remains ongoing and at an early stage.

“The victim is being supported and given access to any specialist help or support she needs.

“A man, aged in his sixties, was arrested on Friday (April 4) on suspicion of sexual offences against a girl (under the Sexual Offences Act 1956), rape (under the Sexual Offences Act 2003),  and misconduct in a public office. He’s been released on conditional bail for enquiries to continue.

“This is an active and sensitive investigation, so we’d respectfully ask people not to speculate on the circumstances so our enquiries can continue unhindered.”

The Sun on Sunday approached Mr Norris for comment.
