‘I knew that when I started boxing’ – Delicious Orie ready to step up as Britain’s next heavyweight star

DELICIOUS ORIE entered boxing ready to exploit a heavyweight gap in the market.

Born in Moscow to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, Orie’s family moved to England when he was seven years old.

He was beaten in the 2024 Olympics by Armenia’s Davit Chaloyan[/caption]

But he only picked up boxing at 18 – having previously played basketball – but what followed was a hugely successful amateur career.

Orie won a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships as well as national titles before making it onto Team GB’s 2024 Olympic squad.

He was eliminated in the first round of the Paris Games under controversial circumstances and has since turned professional.

Orie snubbed an offer from WWE to sign with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren – debuting in Manchester on Saturday.

And he does so with Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury nearing the end of their careers – due to leave behind big gloves that will need filling.

Down to earth Orie, 27, told SunSport: “I knew that when I started boxing, I did my market research.

“I knew that when I started boxing, I knew that there was a missing target audience that I can appeal to.

“I believe that I’m quite real and I could appeal to just normal people and I can also try and inspire as many people that were or still are in my position.

“So I thought to myself, there’s definitely a gap in that market for me. So from before I even thought about turning professional, I knew that.”

Orie was tipped to follow in AJ’s steps and win Olympic gold – but he was beaten via controversial decision against Armenia’s Davit Chaloyan.

And he reflected: “The thing that makes it harder is the fact that I’ll never be able to do it again. That’s the part that’s difficult.

“Not necessarily the fact that everyone thought I won it. At the end of the day I lost and a judge – someone said you lost – it is what it is.

“But it’s the fact that I can’t do it again. I could do it in a different way but it’s not the Olympics. So that, that’s the hardest bit for me to take.”

Orie took some time out after his Olympic heartache, travelling to Thailand with his partner.

He got a shock offer to trial at the WWE – but ultimately chose boxing after some consideration.

Orie said: “First of all, it was time for me to be a bit less selfish and spend time with my family because I know I was away from them for a good few months leading up to the Olympics and also the tournaments and stuff beforehand and the training camps, etc.

“So I just needed to give as much time as I can to them. Then it was the WWE seeing what’s that’s like in America and exploring that option.

There’ll be people gathering together watching Delecious Orie box, whether they don’t like me or like me, doesn’t matter. They’ll be watching.

“And after that, I just needed a few weeks just to really find what my drive is and what is it that I want out of this life.

“So that took a few good few weeks and then it was a good few weeks of negotiations and just speaking with different promoters and stuff like that.

“So it got us to around this time where I’m like, right OK, cool, I’m ready now.

“I know exactly what I need. I’ve got my training facility, I’ve got my promoter. I’m ready to go.”

Orie is being coached by Grant Smith in Sheffield and makes his debut on the undercard of Joe Joyce vs Filip Hrgovic.

He faces 3-7 Milos Veletic from Bosnia And Herzegovina in what Orie promises will be the first of many eye-catching performances in 2025.

Orie said: “I’ll be very, very busy. And it’ll be very, very exciting.

“There’ll be people gathering together watching Delecious Orie box, whether they don’t like me or like me, doesn’t matter. They’ll be watching.”

Fresh twist in Martin Clunes’ row with ‘hippie’ neighbours as star fights to keep Travellers from building caravan site

THE long-running planning row between Martin Clunes and his “hippie neighbours” has taken a further twist – after a decision was delayed over flooding fears.

The Men Behaving Badly star has fought a lengthy battle to stop New Age Travellers Theo Langton and Ruth McGill turning their woodland plot and caravan into an official travellers site.

But after a bitter two-year fight – that has seen Clunes submit multiple objections directly and through his lawyer – the plans looked set to be approved at a meeting today.

Councillors at Dorset County Council planning committee recommended to approve the proposal originally set to be debated on Thursday morning at its headquarters in Dorchester.

But the case has now been deferred after additional concerns were raised about the risk of flooding at the site.

Dorset Council said of the delay: “This is because a matter has come to the attention of officers since the publication of the agenda which will require further consideration.

“The matter relates to surface water flooding and will need to be considered before the application can be reported to committee.

“The application will be reported back to committee as soon as possible.”

In his report that was due to go to the committe, planning official Bob Burden said: “The location is considered to be relatively sustainable and the proposal is acceptable in its design and general visual impact.

“There is not considered to be any significant harm to neighbouring residential amenity.

“There are no material considerations which would warrant refusal of this application.”

The applicants have lived in the 45ft by 16ft mobile home on a temporarily rolling licence near Beaminster, Dorset, for more than 20 years.

They applied for planning permission for continued use of land as a private residential traveller site for “sole use of the applicants and family.”

The plans include use of the erected barn as a dayroom, workshop and store, one mobile home, a touring caravan and a mobile van.

Clunes had tried to argue his neighbours didn’t meet the definition as bona fide travellers and therefore have a right to a base there.

Mr Burden said in his report that temporary permission on the site for this traveller family had been accepted in planning terms under previous appeals and permissions and said the applicants were considered to “have traveller status”.

RULES ON CONVERTING STATIC CARAVANS

Planning permission is required for placing a static caravan  or a luxury lodge on land UNLESS it is being used as ancillary accommodation for a house, such as for a dependent relative or holiday accommodation for visiting family members.

It is best to check with your local planning authority to determine the specific laws and regulations in your area, as you may be subject to additional restrictions if you live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), or conservation area, for example.

The Doc Martin actor, 63, had previously said: “It is my belief that this building lacks any ability to be mobile and was not constructed with any intention of mobility and to describe it as a mobile home is cynical and dishonest.”

In support of their application, the gypsy liason officer for the council wrote: “Theo and Ruth have been a part of the UK travelling community for over 30 years.

“They are a creative Traveller family who have made and sold and operated with a sense of belonging to the community around them, both around Beaminster and within the New Traveller community in the UK and Europe.”

The Clunes bought 130-acre Meerhay Farm near Beaminster, Dorset, from Mr Langton’s mother, the landscape gardener Georgia Langton, in 2007.

The land at the heart of the planning row is around 300 yards from the £5m farmhouse where Clunes lives with wife Philippa Braithwaite.

Did you guess the woman in question is Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha’s eldest daughter?[/caption]

The Loose Women panelist in question is Nadia Sawalha, and the stunning woman in the loved-up picture is her daughter Maddie, 22.

Born on Christmas Day in 2002, Nadia’s eldest child is an aspiring singer/songwriter.

She already has a good following on Instagram of over 17K fans, and uses the platform to promote her music career.

Yesterday, Maddie – who has her mum’s thick brown hair – enjoyed some down time with her man, and shared a sweet snap of them in the pub.

Nadia shares Maddie with her husband Mark Adderley, who she wed the same year her daughter was born.

Their youngest child Kiki, 17, was born five years after her sister, in 2007.

Both of Nadia’s children share a VERY famous aunt, as her sister is Absolutely fabulous star Julia Sawalha.

As she has grown up around stars like her mum and auntie, it is no wonder Maddie is perusing a career in the limelight as well.

MADDIE ‘SAVED MY LIFE’

Nadia previously admitted that having her daughter Maddie had “saved her life” as she feared she was “heading to an early death'” following “years of partying”.

Speaking in 2022, the Loose Women star said that welcoming her eldest child into the world and becoming a mother, was a real “turning point” in her life.

She made the admission on her How To Stay Married (so far) podcast, which she does with husband Mark.

Nadia explained: “When I met you I wasn’t thinking about having children actually, I was really planning a different life.

“I didn’t want to have a child with someone I didn’t like enough. And I didn’t want to bring up a child on my own.”

Nadia then told listeners that falling pregnant with their eldest child was “bonkers” and that the first few years of of being a mum was “very very hard” as she struggled to adjust to her new life.

But it got good, and Nadia concluded by saying that she was glad she’d waited till her late 30s to have a baby, and that it was the “best decision” she has ever made.

“If we had had a baby in our 20s we wouldn’t have made it,” the TV star reflected.

“We wouldn’t have been on the right track to wellbeing and self-improvement.

“We have worked on every single part of us because we are parents.”

Who was Olly Stephens and how long were his killers sentenced for?

OLLY Stephens was a 13-year-old boy who was tragically murdered by three of teenagers.

His story will be explored in ITV’s series Social Media Murders, which examines killings where social media played a key role.

Growing up in Berkshire

Olly was born on November 1, 2007, and grew up in Emmer Green, Berkshire.

He was diagnosed with autism at the age of 13 and was also suspected to have pathological demand avoidance (PDA).

PDA is characterised by a compulsive need to resist authority and expectations.

Sadly, on January 3, 2021, Olly was fatally stabbed to death near his home.

Olly’s tragic murder

Olly was tricked into going to Bugs Bottom field in Reading by two boys, who had a “grievance” with him, and a girl.

He believed that he was meeting the girl alone – a girl who was revealed to have said “I’m so excited” before the attack – but was ambushed.

The younger boy stabbed Olly when he tried to fight back, with all three assailants then fleeing the scene.

In court, it was revealed to the jury that Olly’s killers had sent sinister messages about the 13-year-old to each other in the days leading up to the stabbing.

An off-duty nurse witnessed the stabbing and gave first aid to Olly, after calling an ambulance to save him.

Paramedics performed CPR on him for half an hour, but he sadly died en route to hospital.

An image collage containing 1 images, Image 1 shows Aerial view showing victim's home and location where teen was killed, 250 yards apart; inset photo of victim
Olly was murdered minutes away from his home
The Sun

Two hours after Olly’s death, one of his attackers sent a text message to a friend, that confirmed his role in the murder.

The message read: “Boy it was me and my boy innit. I started slapping him up and then my boy backed out and then shanked him.”

The younger attacker sent a message that described the stabbing as “the biggest mistake of my life”.

Olly’s killers face justice

Both boys were quickly identified with 90 per cent of the evidence against them being taken from mobile phone data.

The girl involved in the attack pleaded guilty to manslaughter and perverting the course of justice, as it was revealed that she deleted incriminating data from her phone.

She was later handed a three-year and two-month sentence in a Young Offenders Institution.

The boys were convicted of murder on July 26, 2021, with the older boy receiving an additional conviction of perverting the course of justice.

However, the younger boy received a longer sentence due to being the person to stab Olly, which meant he was slapped with a 14-year sentence.

The older boy was jailed for 13 years.

Coming face-to-face with his son’s killers in court in September 2021, Olly’s dad Stuart relived the horrifying moment he sprinted to find his son dying.

He said: “The cruel actions of a vain, selfish girl has led to Olly being trapped and slain.

“The day she walked into his life is a day we will forever regret.

“We as a family hold all three of you equally accountable for his death, there will be no forgiveness from us, ever.

“We are no longer the people we were and we will never be the same again.”

Olly’s family also paid tribute to him in a statement issued by Thames Valley Police.

It said: “Oliver was an enigma, having both Autism and suspected Pathological Demand Avoidance, he became a challenge we never shied away from.

“He was hilariously funny, charming and beautiful.”

In June 2022, Stuart told BBC Panorama: “They hunted him, tracked him and executed him through social media

“Social media is not guilty of the murder, but it did nothing to protect him.

“Without it, he’d still be here.”

Social Media Murders

Oly’s tragic death will be explored in The Murder of Olly Stephens: Social Media Murders.

The episode will feature exclusive interviews with the people who helped bring Olly’s killers to justice and will take viewers behind the scenes into how social media played a role in the killing.

Viewers can catch the episode when it airs at 9pm on ITV2.

In front of them more than four miles of pristine Aintree turf and 16 fences to be jumped.

The winner will go down in history – the rest might be back to fight another year… or admit defeat in their one shot at glory.

Templegate will bring you his big tip for the day – and you can get it before anyone else by joining our Members Enclosure tipping service for just £1 for the first month.

The build-up to this year’s race has had a bit of everything.

Willie Mullins and Bryony Frost sparked a jocking off storm that left Paul Nicholls desperately searching for a rider.

While the market has been topsy-turvy all week with a load of runners including Iroko, I Am Maximus, Vanillier and Stumptown all being backed into favourite.

But it’s been the opposite story for long-time ante-post fav Intense Raffles, whose price has drifted markedly amid a concerning lack of support.

I Am Maximus was 7-1 joint-fav when he won last year and it seems like bookies reckon one at the top of the market – rather than a plucky outsider – will triumph this year.

We’ll bring you the latest odds once bookies have updated their markets.
