Scott Mills arrives at Radio 2 as he takes over from Zoe Ball

SCOTT Mills flashed a smile as he arrived at the BBC Radio 2 studios for his first day hosting the Breakfast Show permanently.

The former BBC Radio 1 anchor looked cheery amid his fresh start at the station – after popular broadcaster Zoe Ball revealed she was quitting last year.

Scott, 51, wore a trendy green jacket with a black striped trim around the wrists.

He paired it with black jeans, a T-Shirt and trainers, carring a huge black duffle bag in his left hand.

The fan-favourite presenter also clutched his BBC Radio 2 pass in his hand as he stood outside the White City Studios.

During his first show as permanent Breakfast host – after covering for Zoe on the eye-wateringly early programme a number of times – he vowed he would “give it absolutely everything.”

After playing his first hit, Robbie Williams track Rock DJ, Scott told channel’s listeners: “I’ve worked at the BBC for 25 years now, on the radio, a lot of you may well have grown up listening to me.

“I’m sure a lot of you will not have much idea about me at all.

“Either way, if you could make me part of your morning routine, it would honestly mean so much because, believe me, I’m going to give it absolutely everything I’ve got.

“I really hope you enjoy it. Let’s go.”

He then excitedly added: “This might be the best day of my life, apart from getting married.”

ALL CHANGE

Zoe revealed her decision to leave the show back in November, after a whopping six years in the hotseat.

She told how she planned to “focus on my family.”

Yet the mum of one told how she will remain on BBC Radio 2 – teasing an announcement in the new year.

She said: “After six incredible years on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, it’s time for me to step away from the very early mornings and focus on family.”

Telling her listeners about her decision, she said: “I’ve decided it’s time to step away from the early alarm call and start a new chapter.

Zoe Ball's career so far

Zoe was born in Blackpool and is daughter of the children’s TV presenter Johnny Ball and his wife Julia.

She appeared on television at a young age as part of the studio audience of the Saturday morning children’s show, Saturday Superstore when her father was a guest.

The star began her career in broadcasting as a presenter on the pre-school programme Playdays.

After various behind the scenes roles, she earned a spot as a regular host of Top of the Pops, when she alternated with the likes of Jayne Middlemiss and Jo Whiley.

In 1996, she was chosen to front BBC One‘s saturday morning show Live & Kicking, which led to stints on The Big Breakfast on Channel 4.

But she maintained a huge presence on the radio as she was chosen to be the co-host of BBC Radio 1 Breakfast alongside Kevin Greening in October 1997.

Zoe was later appointed the sole host of the show in a groundbreaking move by the corporation as she was the first female DJ to hold the post.

The presenter chose to leave the station in March 2000 to start a family, where she was succeeded by Sara Cox.

As a mainstream face in TV through the noughties, she hosted a range of huge programmes for ITV, including the Brit Awards in 2002, Extinct in 2006, and both Soapstar Superstar and Grease Is The Word in 2007.

In mid-2002, she returned to radio when she joined Xfm (later known as Radio X), when she was the voice of the weekday drivetime show until December 2003. In 2004, she stood in for Ricky Gervais while he filmed the second series of The Office.

In October 2005, she appeared as a contestant on the third series of Strictly Come Dancing, where she was partnered with Ian Waite, The star impressed viewers with her footwork and the duo waltzed into third place.

In 2011, she returned to the franchise as she took over as the host of the magazine spin-off show, It Takes Two.

She also filled in for Claudia Winkleman on the main show in 2014, when The Traitors star took leave after her daughter suffered serious burn injuries.

After 10 years fronting the show, Zoe announced she was quitting her role on BBC Two in May 2021.

Zoe’s journey in BBC Radio 2 started in 2006 when she fronted specialist documentaries. Over the years she sat in for names such as Dermot O’Leary, Ken Bruce and Chris Evans.

After several shake-ups, she returned to the station on a permanent basis when she took over Dermot’s Saturday afternoon slot between 3pm and 6pm.

In October 2018, Chris Evans moved to Virgin Radio and he personally announced that Zoe would take over his popular slot. She started presenting the breakfast show on 14 January 2019.

“We’ve shared a hell of a lot, the good times, the tough times, there’s been a lot of laughter. And I am going to miss you cats.”

She added she would also miss her colleagues, saying they were “like family to me”.

The early morning presenter added: “But I won’t miss the 4am alarm call, if I’m completely honest.

“You know I love you all to bits.”

She then made her final farewell to the show on December 20.

Later in November, Scott broke his silence after his career switch was revealed.

Meanwhile, it was revealed how DJ Trevor Nelson would be taking on Scott’s Radio 2 afternoon slot.

SHOCK REVEAL

The broadcaster also told how he had almost been sacked by the BBC in a shock move.

Scott has worked for the Beeb since 1998, and was previously known for Radio 1.

Speaking to Dermot O’Leary, he revealed how a boozy night out at the Brits almost got him sacked from his job.

It came after Dermot played a clip of Scott slurring his words on his early morning Radio 1 show in 2001.

After hearing the clip, the new Radio 2 Breakfast Show star said: “That’s called how to really nearly lose your job at BBC.

“I had got carried away so much at the Brit Awards, because I had never been there before, and time just fast-forwarded, and somebody went, what time are you on air?

And I said, ‘Four?’ and they went, ‘Well, it’s two now’. Oh no!

“It was horrendous.”

CHELSEA are set to revisit talks with Bayern Munich to sign Mathys Tel, according to reports.

However after failing to feature in the last three matches the Frenchman could be available for a move with time running out in the transfer window.

Chelsea are set to try again to see if Tel has changed his mind, according to the Daily Mail.

They could even offer Christopher Nkunku as part of the deal with Bayern interested in the out of favour forward.

Nkunku has made just three Premier League starts this season and could be allowed to leave on loan.

Manchester United are also keen on the French international.

It has been rumoured Nkunku could move to Old Trafford on loan as part of a deal that would see Chelsea sign Alejandro Garnacho.

United have reportedly slapped a £55million asking price on the head of the 20-year-old, who Blues boss Enzo Maresca is open to signing.

He said: “We pay attention [to the market] if something can happen.

Brit missing after his 40ft yacht is ‘eviscerated’ and life raft is found empty in horror storm off French coast

The 73-year-old was sailing in the Atlantic in stormy weather when he set off his distress beacon on Saturday.

He got into difficulty around 80k west of Lacanau, southwestern France.

French authorities said they had received an alert from counterparts in the UK on Friday evening after the yacht failed to respond to radio messages.

A Portuguese cargo ship later managed to make radio contact after several attempts.

But at around 3pm on Saturday the boat’s distress beacon sounded.

The French air force deployed a helicopter to search for the sailor.

Rescue crews spotted his 40ft yacht, the Tiger PA, in the Bay of Biscay and winched two divers down to the wreckage.

It was found “eviscerated” at about 5.30pm, authorities said.

An empty life raft was also found nearby and the search was called off in the early hours of Sunday.

Officials said the hunt was closed “due to a lack of information”.

French media said the Atlantic had been battered by high winds at the onset of Storm Herminia.

A yacht under the same name was last recorded in Weymouth, Dorset, last week, the Vesselfinder website shows.

Storm Herminia: Map reveals where 80mph winds & flash floods will strike UK as new storm hits after two killed in Eowyn

A MAP reveals where 80mph winds and flash floods will strike the UK as a new storm hits after Eowyn killed two.

Storm Herminia is moving in from Europe, bringing the threat of flooding and more disruption to transport across large parts of England and Wales.

It comes after Calum Carmichael, 19, and Kacper Dudek, 20, were killed by falling trees.

And a 73-year-old British sailor remains missing at sea after his yacht disappeared in stormy weather off the coast of Lacanau on the southwest French coast on Saturday.

A series of yellow warnings for wind and rain have been issued for large parts of England and Wales with more than 40 flood warnings in place.

After a Met Office warning for rain over parts of Wales and central, southern and northern England, ran until 6am today and there was little respite with much of the same area under a 24-hour warning for strong and gusty winds from the same time.

A warning for periods of heavy rain that could cause some flooding of roads and properties was in place for the West Midlands and most of Wales until 11.59pm on Monday with the Met Office predicting 20mm to 40mm to fall quite widely and 50mm to 70mm on higher ground.

Okehampton in Devon had 35.8mm of rain on Sunday, while an 83mph gust was recorded in Berry Head, south Devon, and 81mph in Capelcurig, North Wales.

A yellow wind warning was in place until 7am on Monday for large parts of southern England, the North West, the West Midlands and Yorkshire.

Flooding saw stretches of the A36 and A303 closed in Devon and Wiltshire overnight, while National Rail said services were running normally between Taunton and Castle Cary after flooding.

Most of the 40 flood warnings, where flooding is expected, issued by the Environment Agency cover the south west and south coast, the two warnings issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

Scotland is recovering from the effects of Storm Eowyn.

ScotRail said engineers had made “great progress” in removing debris and repairing damage, but several lines were unlikely to reopen for the start of services on Monday.

The Largs to Adrossan line will not reopen on Monday after an overhead gantry was brough down by a falling tree.

Avanti West Coast said services to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh had resumed, but warned of late starts and possible delays on Scottish routes.

Northern Ireland Electricity Networks said around 74,000 customers remained without power at the end of Sunday following Storm Eowyn, while the Northern Powergrid said teams were working to reconnect more than 150 customers overnight.

Ben Lukey, a flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said: “Although not expected, impacts could include localised flooding from watercourses, drains, channels and flooding from overland flow.

A wet and windy spell arrived in the South West on Sunday morning and was moving across the north of the UK overnight.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: “Things are going to stay unsettled in the next few days. We’re getting successive spells of wet and windy weather, which is obviously adding to impacts

While not as powerful as Storm Eowyn, a low-pressure system was named Storm Herminia by meteorologists in Spain which was expected to feel the strongest winds.

The Met Office said Monday is expected to see showers, turning heavy in the south alongside strong, gale-force winds, with snow on the hills in the north.

Gales are expected to ease slowly in the South West overnight but pick up in the far north.

Tuesday is forecast to see further heavy showers in the south with a risk of thunder. Longer spells of rain in the North West as expected to ease later.

The wet and windy weather will remain in the south on Wednesday more settled conditions will be present later in the week.

Sunday’s system has been named as Storm Herminia by the Spanish Meteorological Service, with more significant impacts expected in Spain.

The system has not met the criteria to be named by the Met Office’s storm naming group, which includes Met Eireann and KNMI.

5-day weather forecast

Today:

Showers or longer spells of rain across most areas. Showers turning heavy at times in the south with a chance of thunder, plus hill snow in the north. Strong, gale-force winds continuing in the south, and temperatures around average.

Tonight:

Showers and longer spells of rain continue overnight. Gales in the southwest slowly easing, but winds picking up in the far north. A patchy frost forming in the northwest.

Tuesday:

Further heavy showers in the south with a risk of thunder. Longer spells of rain in the northwest, but easing later. Strong winds at first, and temperatures around average.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Remaining wet and windy in the south on Wednesday. Becoming more settled for all on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures near the seasonal average, but chilly at night.
