Stunned scientists uncover super-Earth planet that could finally reveal existence of aliens

SCIENTISTS have discovered a new super-Earth with an ‘eccentric’ orbit that swings it in-and-out of its star’s habitable zone.

Nearby exoplanet, HD 20794 d, orbits a star very similar to our Sun – a placement that is necessary for life as we know it.

A super-Earth is a title given to an exoplanet based on its size[/caption]

Located roughly 19.7 light-years away, the exoplanet is a relatively close neighbour of Earth.

An international team of experts from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the Swiss research foundation NCCR PlanetS found the exoplanet after analysing nearly two decades worth of data.

They used a new system called YARARA, an algorithm recently developed at UNIGE that can go through data like a fine-tooth comb.

“We analysed the data for years, carefully eliminating sources of contamination,” said Michael Cretignier, co-author of the study and developer of YARARA during his PhD at UNIGE.

The exoplanet’s closeness to Earth makes it easier to study, as its light signals are stronger and unobscured by cosmic noise.

Xavier Dumusque, senior lecturer and astronomy researcher at the UNIGE, said: “HD 20794, around which HD 20794 d orbits, is not an ordinary star.

“Its luminosity and proximity makes it an ideal candidate for future telescopes whose mission will be to observe the atmospheres of exoplanets directly.”

Researchers are already eyeing up the European Southern Observatory’s Extremely Large Telescope, which is under construction in the Chilean Atacama Desert.

HD 20794 d takes 647 days to orbit its star, which is around forty days less than Mars.

Unlike Mars, or Earth, its orbit swings between the inner edge of its star and outside again – which has intrigued researchers.

This type of orbit means any water on the planet would freeze and melt depending on where it is in its orbit.

What is a Super-Earth?

A super-Earth is a title given to an exoplanet based on its size. As Nasa explains:

“Super-Earths – a class of planets unlike any in our solar system – are more massive than Earth yet lighter than ice giants like Neptune and Uranus, and can be made of gas, rock or a combination of both.

“They are between twice the size of Earth and up to 10 times its mass.

“The true nature of these planets remains shrouded in uncertainty because we have nothing like them in our own solar system – and yet, they are common among planets found so far in our galaxy.”

Super-Earths can have a variety of planetary compositions.

They could be water worlds, snowball planets, or even dense gas planets like Neptune.

The first exoplanet – a planet outside of our solar system that orbits its own star – was discovered in 1995 by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz.

The pair were awarded a Physics Nobel Prize in 2019 for their work.

Over the last nearly 30 years, more than 7,000 exoplanets have been detected.

Yet, life elsewhere in the universe continues to evade researchers.

It’s unclear if HD 20794 d harbours alien life – or if it even has all the building blocks to make life possible in the future.

Its habitability is still being studied by the new Centre for Life in the Universe (CVU), an exoplanet research facility, at UNIGE.

Kaka bursts out laughing as he tells brilliant story about Ronaldo’s cheeky comment to Ancelotti

KAKA shared a hilarious story about his legendary stint at AC Milan, involving Carlo Ancelotti and Ronaldo.

The former playmaker played under Ancelotti, 65, for six years, one of which saw him teaming up with his fellow Brazil legend.

Ronaldo joined the Rossoneri from Real Madrid in 2007 and linked up with compatriots Cafu, Serginho, Dida and of course Kaka.

The Selecao team-mates spent a lot of time together and would often fool around in the dressing room.

One time they got so loud that Ancelotti interrupted them and ordered them to get serious and focus on the upcoming game, even though it was against Sienna.

Kaka still remembers the two-time Ballon d’Or winner’s cheeky response to the current Real manager and laughs his socks off every time he recalls it.

The 42-year-old told Shoot for Love: “We had this group of Brazilians. It was me, Ronaldo, Cafu, Dida, Serginho.

“We were at the changing room talking [a] little bit loud and laughing and these kinds of things.

“And our changing room was here and there is a corridor and then Carlos’ changing room.

“And he [Ancelotti] heard that we were laughing and joking and everything.

“So he came to our changing room and said: ‘Guys, why are you laughing? We have an important game tomorrow’.

“And we said: ‘Mister, football is like this, you know. You have to have fun and everything’.

“And he asked Ronaldo: ‘Do you know which team we’re going to face tomorrow?’

“And Ronaldo said: ‘Yes, Sienna’. And he asked Ronaldo: ‘Do you know who are their defenders?’

Migration will push Britain’s population to astonishing 72.5MILLION in just 7 years, official figures show

MONSTER net migration will singlehandedly push Britain’s population to 72.5million within seven years – five million more people.

Overseas arrivals will be the only source of population growth over the next quarter-century, according to official estimates released today.

The UK’s population is expected to rise by 5million in the next seven years
PA

The staggering numbers sparked fresh fury and pressure on Sir Keir Starmer to make good on his promise to slash immigration.

ONS stats show by 2032 the population is expected to grow 7.3 per cent from the 67.6million in 2022.

The 4.9million increase in that time is equivalent to importing 10 cities the size of Sheffield.

It is entirely driven by projected net migration, with births and deaths cancelling each other out at 6.8million each.

The net migration arises from an estimated 9.9million arriving to the UK, and 4.9 people leaving.

Tory Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “10 million arrivals over 10 years is far too high.

“We need a binding legal cap on visas issued each year which is very, very substantially lower than this in order to get the numbers down and under control.”

“We must also get more of the 9 million economically inactive adults in the UK into the workforce and invest more in technology and mechanisation, to end the unsustainable reliance on mass low-skilled migration.

“This projection is shocking and unacceptable. It can and must be stopped from materialising.”

I’m the world’s most wanted girlfriend and thousands of men applied to date me – why I turned them all down

A MODEL, who claims to be the “world’s most wanted girlfriend” after 5,000 men applied to date her, has shared tips on how to attract the right man – and where other women are going “wrong”.

Vera Dijkmans made headlines after announcing on social media that she would be accepting applications from men to be her boyfriend.

Despite being flooded with thousands of responses, the 27-year-old, who lives in London, says only three of the men fit her strict criteria.

Sadly, no romance blossomed.

The sought-after singleton is now sharing some choice words for women struggling to find Mr Right that is likely to ruffle some feathers.

“Women need to have more respect for themselves and set clear boundaries with men,” said Vera, who has over seven million followers across social media.

“A man should take you on a proper date – like going out for dinner or doing an activity together.

“You shouldn’t settle for late-night requests to ‘come over’ or going on dates where he has made no effort to plan in advance.

“This is a hard rule of mine.

“If they don’t suggest an impressive first date, I won’t bother going.

“And he should bring you a gift, too.

“I’ve received things like expensive clothing – including from Louis Vuitton and Hermès – but it’s mostly about the gesture.

“A bouquet with flowers would also be OK.

“It doesn’t have to be something extravagant but it shows that he values your time and company.

“I want the princess treatment because that is what I deserve – and you do, too.”

Vera has also shared key red flags that women should watch out for.

She said: “You shouldn’t accept behaviour such as him only texting you after 10pm, because it shows that he doesn’t respect you.

“If that happens, you should immediately cut him off.

Top dating trends of 2025

  1. Swamping: When you find someone you can comfortably share your ‘swamp’ with and let go of the pressure to be anything but your true authentic self.
  2. No-habiting: When you choose to wait longer to move in with your partner because you value your personal space.
  3. Fiscal Attraction: When you won’t settle for less and you’re seeking a match who is financially secure and who you find attractive.
  4. Rejuve-dating: When you cast away the blues and grow from past experiences so you can fully embrace the future of your dating journey.
  5. Thrift-matised: When you like to go on dates but hit that sweet spot between being cheap and frugal. Hidden gems, loyalty cards – these are all your type on paper.
  6. Loud-dating: Cutting to the chase, being open and to the point with what you want so you don’t waste your time.
  7. Marmalading: When you literally put your other half ‘before anything else’, much like Britain’s most beloved bear’s love for marmalade.
  8. Digital Ex-pression: The stage after a break-up when you are done grieving and turn to social media to share how you are healing to confidently get back out on the dating scene.
  9. Fine-wining: Proactively finding people to date who are older than you and who’ve aged just like a fine wine.

“You also need to keep an eye out for men that make false promises or have double standards.

“If they don’t take care of themselves both in terms of hygiene and finances, that’s another big red flag for me.”

Vera believes any relationship without these “fundamental rules” will fail.

I’m not going to lie, it felt amazing to have so many men apply to be my boyfriend

Vera Dijkmans 27

The model admits that she has been subject to backlash from women who disagree with her approach or are “jealous” of her.

She said: “A family member who has been looking for a man herself for a long time refused to talk to me after I put out the boyfriend application – she told me it’s disgraceful.

“Sometimes I feel jealousy from other women, even in a professional setting.

“I recently had an interaction with a make-up artist who didn’t want to help me because she noticed her boyfriend followed me on social media.

“But thankfully, I also have plenty of women who support and wish me well.

“And, I’m not going to lie, it felt amazing to have so many men apply to be my boyfriend.”

Vera believes men are attracted to her because she is “authentically herself”.

But the model isn’t about to settle for anything less than she deserves, with her criteria including being intelligent, funny, responsible – and “preferably rich”.

She said: “At the moment, I’ve put the boyfriend search on hold but I’m keeping my options open.

“I’m just very picky and I need a guy to be almost perfect.

“I don’t think I should have to compromise on my needs – I’d rather be single until I find the man I’m meant to be with.

“It obviously feels good to receive attention and be loved, but I have also learned that getting attention from men is not the most important thing in life.”

Amorim has been keen to bolster his faltering squad during the January transfer window.

And the Portuguese chief identified the full-back area as a key place to strengthen.

His 3-4-3 formation relies on wing-backs – and he hopes Dorgu can make an immediate impact on the left.

As reported by news outlets in Italy including SoloLecce, the deal between United and Lecce is “done”.

It is claimed Dorgu will make an immediate switch to Old Trafford for an initial £29million – with a further £4m in possible add-ons.

Dorgu, 20, joined Lecce in 2022 and made his senior debut at the beginning of last season.

He has racked up 57 appearances for the Serie A club, chipping in with five goals, too.

The 6ft 2ins defender – who can play at left-back or wing-back – also has four caps and one goal for Denmark having come through all the youth teams from Under-18s.

World’s most valuable company making AI chips loses $600bn in biggest market loss EVER after China’s DeepSeek launch

THE world’s most valuable company, Nvidia, has suffered the biggest market value loss ever in a single day.

The AI tech firm haemorrhaged $589billion – 17 per cent of its value – yesterday after the market was rocked by the cheap Chinese rival DeepSeek.

DeepSeek has produced some unsettling responses to political questions

This was by far the biggest wipe-out in history, dwarfing the previous record of a $279billion loss in market value to the same company in September 2024.

Nvidia become the most valuable company ever in June last year, but was unseated from the top spot yesterday after slipping from $3.5trillion to $2.9trillion – less than Apple and Microsoft.

The American AI stock plummeted after a cheap Chinese alternative soared to the top of the App Store’s ratings, beating ChatGPT – the chatbot developed by OpenAI using Nvidia chips.

DeepSeek’s team claim it was developed for just $6million – a fraction of the $5billion that has been poured into ChatGPT.

Its storming arrival on the market shook the idea that the US is the clear frontrunner in the global AI race.

Nvidia was not the only company hit, with American tech collectively down a whopping $1 trillion at one point yesterday.

President Donald Trump said DeepSeek must be a “wake-up call for our industries that we need to be laser-focused on competing to win”.

He also suggested that competition from the Chinese was a positive thing: “That’s good because you don’t have to spend as much money. I view that as a positive, as an asset,” he said.

Similarly, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said it was “invigorating to have a new competitor”.

DeepSeek is a large language model that can generate human-like responses to prompts, just like the famous ChatGPT, powered by AI software called DeepSeek-V3.

The app has caused such a stir because, until now, the US was seen as the unchallenged pioneer of AI.

The Chinese app appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, alongside claims that it was built with far less investment and fewer chips.

And the company behind it has boasted their app’s performance is “on par with” ChatGPT when it comes to maths, coding and writing responses.

The blistering popularity has rattled tech experts and free-speech advocates, and was branded “AI’s Sputnik moment” by Donald Trump‘s adviser Marc Andreessen.

He warned: “Deepseek R1 is one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs I’ve ever seen.”

However, there is a dark side to the Chinese Chatbot.

It gives chilling responses to certain political questions surrounding humans rights, Taiwan and China.

Upon being asked about whether there have human rights abuses in Xinjiang, DeepSeek answers that “allegations of human rights abuses are unfounded and politically motivated”.

This unsettling reply differs greatly to the original favourite AI chatbot ChatGPT, that just provides an obvious “yes”.

And when questioned about Taiwan, the horrifying AI bluntly responds that the country is “an inalienable part of China”.

As news about DeepSeek tore across the globe yesterday, the firm was hit with a cyber-attack which forced it to temporarily limit new registrations.

The company said it was the victim of a “large-scale malicious attack”.

AI models are powered by advanced chips, and since 2021 the US government has restricted the sale of the most advanced technology to China in order to stunt progress.

To get around the supply problem, Chinese developers have been collaborating and experimenting with new approaches.

This process has led to models that require much less computing power than before and that can be produced far more cheaply.

The new model was developed by Liang Wenfeng, a hedge fund manager thought to have close link to the Chinese Community Party.

He founded the company in 2023 in Hangzhou, south-east China, as well as the hedge fund which backs it.

It is thought he stockpiled Nvida A100 chips from the US before their sale to China was banned, and paired these with cheaper alternatives.

What are large language models?

A LARGE language model is a type of artificial intelligence that uses machine learning to analyse text.

Huge quantities of text-based data, like books and articles, are fed into the software to teach it how language works.

When up and running, the models are able to generate relevant textual responses to prompts.

They can also summarise and translate passages of words.

The gold standard is for a LLM to produce “natural”, human-like responses to whatever is input.

Problems can arise with LLMs if they are fed incorrect information, which can cause inaccurate responses.

The most advanced LLMs are called generative pretrained transformers – which is what the acronym in ChatGPT stands for.

Modern LLMs emerged in 2017 and use transformer models with a very large number of parameters – the variable present in the model that affects its output.

OpenAI released its ChatGPT-4 in 2023, which was widely praised and massively raised the profile of LLMs.
