Shocking moment alligator is found FROZEN in ice lake as bitter cold and rare snow strikes US Deep South

THIS is the shocking moment an alligator was found stuck in a frozen lake as a bitter freeze struck across the Deep South.

A surprise wave of extremely rare freezing temperatures across the US South has even left predators frozen in their tracks.

The trapped alligator won’t be leaving its home on Cat Island, South Carolina, around 70 miles south of Charleston, anytime soon.

A shocking video showed how the predator was truly stopped in its tracks by this surprise weather.

The animal’s head – which had popped above the pond waters – appeared to not move an inch.

This worrisome clip also caught the patches of snow around the icy lake.

A weather station in Charleston captured just how incredibly cold the area had become.

Around three inches of snow fell across the zone while temperatures hit about 25 degrees (-3 celsius) which is much lower than the usual 60 degrees (15 celsius) for this time of year, per FOX Weather.

An expert revealed that the creature’s condition in the video is a survival tactic.

Officials in Beaufort, South Carolina, said: “When temperatures drop significantly, alligators can enter a state called brumation – similar to hibernation.

“They slow down their metabolism and become lethargic, allowing them to conserve energy when food is scarce.

“During a hard freeze, they often stick their snouts above the water to breathe, while the rest of their bodies become immobilized in the icy depths.”

A bitterly cold deep freeze has blanketed huge areas of the typically warm South.

More than 31 million Americans were put under a rare winter storm warning last week.

Areas from southern Texas across to Georgia and even up to Virginia were affected by unprecedented snow, sleet, and Arctic winds.

At least 10 people died from the brutal and surprise storms that gripped the vast region.

In South Texas, three people died from exposure to the bitter cold.

A car accident, caused by icy road conditions, killed five others, Uvalde County Constable Emmanuel Zamora said.

A 27-year-old woman was killed in Alabama after she lost control of her vehicle on a snow-covered road in Ozark, about 86 miles south of Montgomery.

In Pinckard, Alabama, a 37-year-old man was killed when his home went up in flames after he left his stove on trying to stay warm, the coroner’s office said.

Even Houston, Texas, was affected by the rare winter storm[/caption]

Snowfall in certain areas broke records set back in the 1800s.

NWS Meteorologist Richard Bann said Tuesday’s snow in New Orleans could have broken a record set in 1895 when eight inches fell.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Tom Kines said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for a lot of these folks down there.”

“For kids that have never had snowball fights… they’re going to have one.”

States affected by the rare snowstorm

A once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm swept the southeast, blanketing the following states in several inches of snow:

  • Texas
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Arkansas

Nestle launches new style KitKats in three different flavours

NESTLE has launched a new-style KitKat sharing bar in three flavours, sending fans wild.

The new product is a bar of KitKat pieces that sees crispy wafer fingers topped with flavoured fillings and coated in chocolate.

The new designs have stepped away from the classic finger KitKat shape[/caption]

Shoppers have been sharing pictures of the bars online with the flavours spotted including double chocolate, salted caramel and hazelnut.

The double chocolate bars feature a cocoa-flavoured filling, covered with thick, milk and dark chocolate marbled swirls.

Salted caramel bars see a filling covered in thick caramel flavour milk chocolate and marbled swirls, while the hazelnut-filled bars are covered in thick, milk and dark chocolate marbled swirls.

The bars are perfect for sharing with pieces easily broken off.

And fans of Nestle’s KitKat have been loving what they see.

One said: “That looks absolutely banging.”

Another added: “Wow I love my KitKat, that looks lovely to be fair.”

A third said: “I need them all.”

Stephanie Scales, marketing manager for KitKat at Nestlé UK & Ireland, said: “In today’s non-stop world, it’s far too easy to let the evenings disappear in a blur. We want KitKat fans to hit that pause button and really unwind at the end of the day… and what better way to do that than by catching up with your favourite people and sharing a delicious treat?

“KitKat’s always been about those feel-good breaks and now with sharing bars, we’re making it even easier to disconnect and reclaim your evenings.”

The KitKat bars have been found in branches of Tesco, where they were being sold for £1.50 each.

But from Wednesday January 29 they will be available at retailers nationwide.

Nestle has launched several new KitKat products recently, including a hazelnut flavoured four-finger bar spotted in supermarket Sainsbury’s.

It also launched a classic caramel bar, which hit shelves in 2023.

Other classic KitKat flavours include white chocolate, orange, dark mint and cookies and cream.

Meanwhile KitKat Crunchy bars are available in flavours including peanut butter, double chocolate and white chocolate.

This time last year Nestle also revealed the KitKat 70% dark chocolate bar had returned to shelves with a different recipe.

The white chocolate and Biscoff flavour KitKat chunky also made a limited return to shelves last year, to shoppers’ delight.

And 2023 also saw a mint cookies and cream KitKat available at B&M stores for a limited time.

The variety had previously only been available in Australia.

Chocolate lovers regularly spot new, limited edition or imported flavours on shelves.

At the end of last year Cadbury launched a new Twirl bar described by shoppers as “pure bliss”.

The Breakaway Cookie Dough X Twirl Bar featured layers of crunchy biscuit pieces and a chewy cookie dough filling all encased in Cadbury’s classic smooth milk chocolate.

A new Rowntree’s chocolate bar also had shoppers excited in December.

The Rowntree Jellytastic Mini Egg Bar contained pieces of fruit flavoured jelly sweets.

In the same month shoppers rushed to B&M to buy an ultra-rare pink lemonade flavoured Cadbury chocolate bar.

B&M shoppers also found an Aero Milky Bar – which combined bubbly Aero and white Milky Bar in one chocolate.

Last year also saw Nestle’s White Crunch bars appear on shelves in Home Bargains for just £1.39.

It came as a shock to customers as the sweet treat, which was first launched in 1965, was axed from production in 2018.

How to save money on chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar.

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs…

Go own brand – if you’re not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you’ll save by going for the supermarket’s own brand bars.

Shop around – if you’ve spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it’s cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you’re getting the best deal.

Look out for yellow stickers – supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they’ve been reduced.

They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.

Buy bigger bars – most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar.

So if you’ve got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.

Thousands of Palestinians return to ‘demolition site’ Gaza amid tense peace after Trump’s shock plan to ‘clean out’ area

THOUSANDS of Palestinians are returning to some of the most heavily destroyed parts of Gaza amid Israel’s fragile ceasefire with Hamas.

It comes after Israel lifted its closure of the north for the first time since the early weeks of the 15-month war.

Huge crowds of people have been pictured walking with their belongings in hand along a main road that runs along the coast in scenes reminiscent of the mass exodus more than a year ago.

Yasmin Abu Amshah said she walked 6km to reach her home in Gaza City, where she found it badly damaged but still habitable.

The mum-of-three said: “It was a long trip, but a happy one. The most important thing is that we returned.”

Tens of thousands of Palestinians fled their homes in the north after Israel unleashed its retaliation for the October 7 atrocity.

They have been sheltering in squalid tent camps and schools-turned-shelters for more than a year.

Thousands are now taking the long coastal route on foot after Israel opened routes through the Netzarim Corridor, eager to return to their homes.

Many have likely been damaged or destroyed, however.

Others in cars have been directed to use Salah al-Din Street – but all flooding back in have been warned to avoid all areas where forces are deployed.

Many feared their exodus from Gaza would be permanent – fuelled by Donald Trump’s idea to resettle huge numbers of Palestinians in Egypt or Jordan.

Describing Gaza as a “demolition site”, the newly-inaugurated president revealed radical plans to “clean out” the strip.

He said: “You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing.

“Almost everything is demolished and people are dying there.”

Trump called on neighbouring Arab nations to take in more Palestinians.

He said: “I’d like Egypt to take people. And I’d like Jordan to take people.”

The president added that the move “could be temporary” or “long-term”.

Both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority condemned Trump’s proposal.

The pre-war population of Gaza was over two million people and over 45,000 people have been killed since October 7, 2023, according to the United Nations.

Trump’s plans would be a stark change from the US’s previous policy which promoted a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

But many have seen today’s return as repudiation of Trump’s suggestion.

Ismail Abu Matter, a father of four who waited for three days near the crossing point before moving north with his family, described scenes of jubilation on the other side.

He said people were singing, praying and crying as they were reunited with relatives.

The opening was delayed for two days over a dispute between Hamas and Israel, which said the terror group changed the order of the hostages it released.

Mediators resolved the dispute overnight.

The ceasefire is aimed at winding down the deadliest and most destructive war ever fought between Israel and Hamas and securing the release of dozens of hostages captured in the October 7 attack.

Six more hostages are set to be released this week, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Man Utd Supporters Trust release public warning to Sir Jim Ratcliffe about ticket price hikes at ‘worst possible time’

THE MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS’ TRUST (MUST) issued an open letter to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe following the controversial rise in ticket prices.

Britain’s richest man Ratcliffe, 72, angered United fans last month by raising Old Trafford ticket prices to £66.

Ratcliffe angered Man Utd fans last month by raising Old Trafford ticket prices to £66[/caption]

Sir Jim insisted Man Utd should not charge less than Premier League opponents, such as Fulham.

That led to an X-rated chant against him and the unpopular Glazers regime by the Red Devils faithful when he was spotted at Craven Cottage watching Sunday’s scrappy 1-0 victory over the Cottagers.

United fans were heard chanting: “Jim Ratcliffe’s a c**t, Jim Ratcliffe’s a c**t. Just like the Glazers, Jim Ratcliffe’s a c**t.”

MUST then shared an open letter calling on Ratcliffe to freeze ticket prices and end “the war on season ticket holders”.

The Trust insists this was the “worst possible time” to raise ticket prices.

They cite the impact on fan sentiment, the negative affect on “atmosphere and team performance” and how wrong policies which do not engage properly with supporters can “trigger huge reactions”.

United fans were initially desperate for Sir Jim and his Ineos company to take over sporting operations from the Glazers, which they finally did in 2023.

But recent cut-backs have helped send relations between Ratcliffe and supporters plummeting.

This comes after some other brutal cuts as 250 staff members were made redundant.

In addition, club legends and ambassadors saw their wages getting reduced, while Sir Alex Ferguson was axed.

SunSport also exclusively revealed the club slashed funding for a charity helping former players.

United chiefs say the changes will put the club “on a stronger financial footing” after making a total loss of more than £300million over the past three years.

Man Utd fans' open letter to Sir Jim Ratcliffe

The Manchester United Supporters Trust issued the following open letter to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe regarding the rise of ticket prices:

We write to you as representatives of the Manchester United supporter community, united in our love for the Club and driven by our collective desire to see Manchester United succeed on and off the pitch. As you consider forthcoming decisions on match ticketing policies and pricing, we urge you to pause and carefully reflect on the timing, potential consequences, and long-term impact of any major changes.

We recognise the club ultimately makes these decisions but our intention here is to offer honest counsel, some of which your employees may be reluctant to deliver to you, to help inform these decisions. We also want to put this on public record in the form of an open letter to ensure supporters understand our position too.

Judging by your own public comments it seems you may have come to the conclusion that ticket pricing and policies are in need of a major review. However, we strongly believe that now is the worst possible time to implement significant changes. With the team struggling on the pitch and fan sentiment already at a low ebb, we all need to pull together to lift the team’s performance, not risk deepening divisions or creating further dissatisfaction.

WHY THIS IS THE WRONG TIME
Fan Sentiment:

A price increase or significant ticketing policy changes would land very badly with fans at this time. Negative sentiment comes with financial costs, as discontent escalates into active protests and disillusionment.
This discontent could lead to outright rebellion, with consequences not just for matchday revenues but also for sponsor relations and the club’s global brand. Sponsors depend on a passionate and engaged fanbase; alienating supporters risks damaging these critical partnerships. Discontent also reduces fans’ discretionary spend too.
And the potential to poison the well for stadium plans must be taken into consideration.

Impact on Atmosphere and Team Performance:

Fan dissatisfaction affects the matchday atmosphere, creating performance anxiety for players, rather than the vocal support needed to inspire them.
A passive or even hostile atmosphere at Old Trafford compounding struggling team performances could spiral into a catastrophic tailspin.
Should this happen, the financial losses from lost European qualification and a lower league position finish, would dwarf any potential gains from ticketing revenue increases.

Policy Mistakes Can Trigger Huge Reactions:

Pricing is the headline but changes to ticketing policies must be handled with even greater care. Major missteps without proper understanding of the unforeseen impacts could provoke severe backlash from fans, as history has shown.
Decisions made without proper consultation risk triggering disproportionate reactions and long-term damage to fan relations.
You particularly need to tread carefully around further restrictions or limitations on the ability of season ticket holders to pass on their tickets, a practice that is long established amongst supporters and nurtures our fan culture and community.

THE VALUE OF SUPPORTIVE FANS
How much is good fan relations worth? Consider the following:

A warning signal that you are losing the crowd is the loss of the home advantage (does occasional heroic away performances interspersed with dismal home defeats and draws sound familiar?)
The atmosphere generated by loyal and vocal fans drives the team forward, leading to better performances, higher league positions, and greater Premier League prize money.
Success in domestic and European competitions—fueled by fan support—has substantial financial rewards, not least European qualification for next season.

The opposite is of course true too, and poor atmosphere in the ground feeds poor performances. It is a symbiotic relationship both positively and negatively.

A BETTER WAY FORWARD
Instead of making changes now, we urge you to adopt a more measured approach – work with the fans not against us, to rebuild Manchester United in the way you say you want to.

Hold Fire for This Season:

Be bold – freeze ticket prices for season ticket holders and members for next season. This would signal the club’s commitment to its supporters and create a rallying point for everyone to come together in support of the team for the crucial final months of the season.

Rally the Fans and Club Together:

Use this time to focus on maximizing performance on the pitch, securing European qualification through the Premier League or cup competitions, and strengthening fan support.

Consider Alternative Funding Options:

If additional funding is required for exceptional circumstances, explore another share issue for existing shareholders or allow fans (or other investors) the option to co-invest in their club on a fair and equal basis with the major shareholders. We know many fans would welcome this opportunity.

Consult Fans on Long-Term Changes:

If you believe ticket pricing and policies at Old Trafford require significant correction, initiate a proper consultation process with the supporters who will be impacted. This will ensure decisions are informed by fan perspectives and made with the best chance of securing unity rather than rebellion. You need to take fans with you, not create opposition.

Preserve the Club’s Legacy:

Resist the temptation to sell off the fruits of the youth academy for short-term fixes unless it aligns with a longer-term football strategy that honours Manchester United’s proud tradition of developing talent.

THE BUSINESS CASE FOR A BOLD APPROACH
This is not simply about protecting supporters’ pockets. We understand the financial realities of running the club. However, there is a strong correlation between fan relations and both financial and on-field outcomes. Poorly timed changes to ticketing policies risk undermining the very atmosphere and support that drive success on the pitch, leading to far greater losses in revenue than any gains from ticket price increases or policy changes.

By freezing prices and avoiding major disruptive policy changes now, you have the opportunity to signal that you value the unique role of fans in Manchester United’s success. Together, we can build a stronger future for the club. The consequences of ignoring this are significant, but the benefits of getting it right are immeasurable.

We hope you will give this careful consideration and make the right decision for Manchester United’s future.

Yours sincerely,

The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST)

MAN UTD PLAYER RATINGS: Maguire puts in superb defensive display but Garnacho caught running into blind alleys

MANCHESTER UNITED secured a hard-fought three points against Fulham.

Lisandro Martinez’s deflected strike proved to be the difference in what was the Red Devils’ only shot on target all game.

Harry Maguire impressed but Alejandro Garnacho once again failed to impress in what could have been his Man Utd farewell amid rumours linking him with Napoli and Chelsea.

Here is how SunSport rated the individual performances.

Andre Onana – 7

Good save low down to his left to keep out an Alex Iwobi shot early doors.

Other than that he was barely tested but no glaring errors mean it is a step in the right direction for the Red Devils No1.

Diogo Dalot – 6

Had a difficult time in the first half up against Iwobi who was Fulham‘s main attacking threat.

Switched to the left flank in the second half and supported Garnacho without posing much of a threat.

Matthijs de Ligt – 8

Another strong showing at the back from the Dutchman. Without his support for Dalot, Fulham may have created a goal down United’s right-hand side.

Harry Maguire – 9

A superb defensive display from the England star who has been one of United’s best players since Amorim took charge.

Pulled off a brilliant header at the back post to deny Rodrigo Muniz a certain goal.

Lisandro Martinez – 8

Superb last-ditch tackle to prevent Emile Smith Rowe from shooting as he burst through on goal.

His goal had a big slice of luck as it was deflected past Bernd Leno but credit to him for having the audacity to shoot.

Noussair Mazraoui – 7

Solid at the back and tried to get forward when he could. United looked more balance with him on the left and Dalot on the right, although the pair swapped at half-time.

Manuel Ugarte – 6

Showed some nice touches and was a bit of a menace in the middle – in a positive and negative sense. Kept a close eye on Smith Rowe and allowed him no time on the ball.

Booked for a foul on Adama Traore and was taken off shortly afterwards with an injury.

Bruno Fernandes – 5

Not at his best. Barely saw the ball in the first half and was not very effective when he did get it.

Amad Diallo – 6

Looked bright on the ball and United’s only real outlet going forward.

He worked tirelessly and pressed really well – his hard work paid off when he found the back of the net in stoppage time but his effort was chalked off.

Alejandro Garnacho – 3

Was cautious on the ball and ran into blind alleys too often. Final ball let him down on the rare occasion he did manage to beat a defender.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4

His hold up play is nowhere near good enough for this system or for a club like United.

He was too gung-ho at times and his erratic nature meant linking up with Amad and Garnacho proved difficult.

Hauled off before the hour mark which says it all about his performance.

Subs:

Leny Yoro (for De Ligt, 58mins) – 6

A more assured display given his shaky start to life in the Premier League.

Joshua Zirkzee (for Hojlund, 58mins) – 5

Like Hojlund he had a difficult time holding the ball up but United improved with him on the pitch.

Toby Collyer (for Ugarte, 76mins ) – 6

Solid display again from the youngster who was often in the right position to clear, including one on the line to stop a Joachim Andersen header from going in.

Kobbie Mainoo (for Garnacho, 80mins) – 6

Provided energy in midfield and shored things up alongside Collyer.

A brilliant one-two with Amad set up the winger to score before VAR ruled Amad offside.

Tyrell Malacia (for Mazraoui, 80mins) – 6

Brought on in an unfamiliar right wing-back role but did what was needed to see out the clean sheet.

As it seems children these days are developing more and more of an expensive taste from a young age.

One bargain hunting mum has hit the jackpot at Asda, as she’s managed to walk away with £100 worth of gifts for just 38p.

She managed to find a popular kids toy for just 2p, when it usually retails for £5 and quickly filled up her trolley with the goods.

Kat Pearson posted her jaw-dropping haul to Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, and wrote: “Huge thank you to the lady who posted about these in Asda scanning through at 2p!

“Should have cost £5 each so £100! And cost me 38p!

“Got my daughter one and thought for any parties she goes to.”

The eagle-eyed bargain hunter uploaded a pic of her presents, 20 Real Littles Backpack toys.

The adorable small backpacks contain mini collectable items – such as tiny lunch boxes, mini drink bottles, scented stickers and more.

The shiny bags all come with working zippers and a clip to attach them to your bag or jeans.

They’re popular with children who like to swap the mini collectables inside.

The tiny backpacks make great birthday presents, and Kat said she planned to use them as gifts for her daughters friends.

Users online couldn’t believe that clever Kat had nabbed the lot for just 38p.

“Wow! These were £6 before!” one person wrote.

Someone else said: “Nice to see people posting about possible bargains, restores faith in people.”

Another person chimed in: “I always buy extra for parties too! Wish I’d have seen these and scanned them yesterday.”

Although not everybody was impressed with the size of Kat’s haul.

“None left now though, you got them all,” one person joked.

“Why do you have to buy so many?” another person asked.

How much do experts advise spending on a child’s birthday?

A study by major toy retailer TK Maxx revealed that one in three parents admit to spending less on presents for their own children and their children’s friends compared to five years ago.

Average Spend: Parents spend an average of £175 on birthday gifts for their kids, while presents for their children’s friends can cost up to £95 a year, adding extra strain on household finances.

Gifts and Parties: Children receive around 12 presents per birthday, and parents take their kids to an average of four birthday parties annually.

Top Five Gifts Parents Buy for Children:

Clothes: 49%

Books: 46%

Technology: 39%

Traditional Board Games: 38%

Remote Controlled Toys: 26%

Dolls: 25%

How Much Should You Spend on a Child’s Birthday?

Experts generally suggest keeping birthday spending reasonable and within the family’s budget. A common guideline is to spend around £10 to £20 per year of the child’s age. For example:

5-year-old: £50 to £100

Remember, the focus should be on creating memorable experiences rather than adhering strictly to a spending rule.

Simple, thoughtful, and creative celebrations can often be just as enjoyable and meaningful for the child.

Another rare ‘planetary parade’ is coming very soon with a seventh planet joining the mix for a spectacular alignment

ANOTHER, even rarer, ‘planet parade’ is set to grace skies very soon.

For one night only, all seven other planets in the Solar System will align in the night sky at the same time.

Illustration of planetary parade showing Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mercury, Uranus, Neptune, and the Moon in the night sky.

This month, six planets have been visible in the sky – and will be joined by Mercury in a few weeks’ time.

Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, Saturn and Mercury will be strung across the sky in an arc shape on 28 February.

Although just five planets, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus and Mercury, will be visible to the naked eye.

Uranus and Neptune are never visible to the naked eye, as they are simply too far away from Earth.

However, with a good pair of binoculars or a telescope, you may be in luck.

It’s not uncommon for a few planets to align – all it requires is for them to be on the same side of the Sun as the Earth.

But it’s quite rare for six planets to align, and even rarer for seven.

Mars, Venus and Jupiter will be easy to spot on 28 February.

Venus will be the brightest in the sky, shining twice as bright as the North Star, Polaris.

It will be followed by Jupiter, glowing only slightly brighter than Polaris.

Venus, Jupiter and Saturn will appear as bright-white points of light, like stars.

While Mars will have a distinct orange glow.

What causes the alignment?

Planets are constantly moving, which means their paths occasionally cross into an alignment in Earth's sky.

Dr Dan Brown, an astronomy expert here at Nottingham Trent University, explained to The Sun: “All planets including Earth move in more or less the same plane in our solar system.

“So that from our perspective the planets are always very close to the apparent path of the Sun in the sky also known as the ecliptic.

“This means they will always be along this line.

“You could compare it with cars on a straight road.

“Since they can only drive on the road they will always be found along the road in more or less a line.

“What varies is how close they are to each other and when we can see them.”

Tips to view ‘planet parade’

Head outside early to allow your eyes to adjust to the dark.

This way you’ll be able to see Saturn, which won’t be as bright as Mars, Venus and Jupiter.

While binoculars or telescopes can allow you to see the planets in all their glory, they can also limit the portion of the sky you can see.

The best time to go outside and look will be just after sunset.

Jupiter is scheduled to set at roughly 6:30pm GMT / EST in the UK and the US.

Mercury’s placement will be low on the horizon, meaning it will also set and dip out of visibility at about 7pm GMT / EST.
