Why does the Masters winner wear a Green Jacket, and which golfer has won the prestigious tournament the most?

THE Masters at Augusta each year is one of the most brilliant spectacles in golf and the world of sport – and wearing the Green Jacket is a huge part of it.

Glorious sunshine, glistening fairways, some fantastic golf and of course the time-honoured tradition of the Georgia club.

Whoever is victorious at the prestigious tournament will then receive one of the most recognisable winning ceremonies in the whole of sport.

The passing over of the iconic Green Jacket from the previous year’s champion to the new one is eagerly awaited – but why does it happen? Here is all you need to know…

Where did the green jacket at Augusta come from?

Slipping on the green jacket is the pinnacle moment for any winner of the tournament, but its story has an interesting past.

That is down to co-founder of Augusta Bobby Jones, an Atlanta-born lawyer by trade, attending a dinner at the Royal Liverpool golf club in Hoylake, where captains all wore red jackets to stand out from the crowd.

When Augusta was founded in 1933, members of the club in that decade wore green jackets during the tournament so that fans in attendance could easily recognise them if a fan needed to ask questions.

Members were not initially enthusiastic about wearing the warm, green coat and eventually a lightweight, made-to-order Jacket was made available.

Te single breasted, single vent Jacket’s colour is officially called “Masters Green” and is adorned with an Augusta National Golf Club logo on the left chest pocket. Why do Masters winners now wear the green jacket?

The green jacket was publicly debuted in 1937, and it became the symbol of membership in the ultra-exclusive Augusta National.

In 1949, the idea of the winners of the tournament to wear one and keep it for life was accepted, with winners all also becoming members of the Champions Club at Augusta.

And of course, it means if they win the tournament, they don’t have to qualify and can play automatically for the rest of their career.

The winner of the 1949 Masters was Sam Snead, so he became the first golfer to win one – but at that time, the club also had jackets made for each of the previous winners of the competition.

What is the current green jacket tradition?

Following the completion of each Masters, the green jacket ceremony is held, where the new champion is presented with the green jacket.

The previous year’s champion then slips the green jacket onto the new winner.

If a golfer wins it two years in a row, and of course he cannot present himself with the jacket, the Augusta National chairman slips the jacket onto the winner.

That jacket is one that tournament officials have retrieved from the locker room, guessing what will fit the new winner best.

Later, the champion is measured and a jacket custom version is tailor-made for specially him.

Who has won the most green jackets/Masters tournaments?

Legendary American golfer Jack Nicklaus leads the way with six between 1963 and 1986 – the next close being five from Tiger Woods.

The likes of Sam Snead, South African Gary Player, British champ Nick Faldo and Phil Mickleson have all won it three times each.

And the ones to win it twice include Tom Watson, the much missed Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal  and Bubba Watson.

She shouts at him: “You’re not having all of that.”

He responds: “Yeah I’m walking out with them, watch me.”

The footage emerged after our undercover investigation found thieves ransacking the chain at branches across the country.

Last week, The Sun’s story revealed the scale of the shoplifting crisis with staff often powerless to intervene.

The latest video shows the manager taking action in Tooting, South London.

A witness who filmed the fracas said of the other customers: “There were two grown men stood by the tills. Everyone was just silent.

“With the crime rates in London, you don’t know what the individual might be carrying. Everyone is just afraid.”

The witness said she often saw thefts in Greggs, adding: “Shoplifters know that the Greggs policy is not to intervene. That’s free rein to do what you want.”

The Met Police said it was not alerted to the incident, which happened in August.

Our investigation was hailed as vital by the Policing Minister Diana Johnson and Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick.

Greggs said: “The safety of our colleagues and loyal customers remains our absolute priority.”

I’m real life Willy Wonka who makes dreams come true at UK’s sweetest theme park & there’s one major perk of the job

AS Easter nears, if anyone can unwrap the secrets of our best- loved chocolate treats it’s real-life Willy Wonka Gerrard Baldwin.

He has spent 35 years at the helm of Cadbury World, the famous attraction in Birmingham that has pulled in 18million visitors since it opened in 1990.

And in so doing he has met famous names from Peter Andre, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin to Princess Anne

Gerrard, 65, who has just retired after almost five decades with Cadbury, lifted the lid on the sweet treats — and the VIP celebrity visits.

The dad of two from Birmingham said: “A huge amount of research and testing goes into creating a new bar.

“The chocolatiers create flavours then taste-test them with the public, and if they are liked it becomes a product.

“I was always among the first to get an opportunity to taste them and I’ve always known if something was going to be successful or not.

“When Kraft took over the business in 2010 everyone said things would change and they did — for the better. They brought different brands on to the market place like Oreo and Marvellous Creations.

“Oreo divides everyone — some people like it while others don’t.”

“Marvellous Creations has jelly and popping candy — it is one of Cadbury’s most popular products today.

Gerrard reckons people’s tastes change as they get older.

He said: “I now eat Bournville more than milk chocolate but if someone opened a box of Heroes at a meeting, I’d have a mountain of wrappers beside me by the end!”

As general manger, Gerrard was lucky enough to meet a host of celebrity visitors over the years.

He recalled: “Ex-PM John Major was our first visitor when he opened the attraction and he was a really lovely, chatty man who was great with the other guests.”

Peter Andre caused a stir when he took daughter Princess and son Junior, then aged three and five, to the attraction in 2010.

He had recently appeared in ITV reality series Katie & Peter with his then-wife Katie Price, who he had since split with.

Gerrard explained: “Peter Andre’s visit created quite a buzz.

“News got out on social media and the next minute hundreds of people arrived. You couldn’t move for visitors.”

But such an impromptu trip wouldn’t do for another VIP visitor.

Gerrard said: “Princess Anne came in 1997 and there was a lot of security and planning involved.

“She was a delight to have around. We made a portrait plaque for her out of chocolate and she absolutely loved it.”

Gwyneth Paltrow was still married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin when they visited in 2005.

Gerrard said: “It was Chris’ birthday and my team gently approached him to sing Happy Birthday, which appeared to go down well.

“He seemed to enjoy it but the staff were a bit embarrassed performing in front of a major singer.

“Adele has also been to have a look around when she came to perform at Birmingham’s NEC in 2016.

“She was really pleasant and even gave us a special mention during her concert.”

Gerrard joined Cadbury’s in 1976 as a clerk and later became the youngest-ever manager on the company’s training scheme.

He revealed he had no idea what to expect when Cadbury World first opened its doors.

He said: “We’d had a month of staff training, going through everything, and consumer expectations were really high.

“Then, in the first ten days of opening, we had more than 20,000 people through the doors and since then 18 million have visited.

“It’s been a great success and I’m so happy to have spent my career here.”

Cocaine worth £100,000 found stashed in British Airways plane toilet by engineer at Gatwick

COCAINE worth £100,000 was found stashed in a British Airways plane toilet by a service engineer at Gatwick.

The haul was spotted behind a panel while the Boeing was in a hangar for routine checks.

It was uncovered after the jet touched down from Orlando, Florida.

The engineer called police and now Border Force officials and the National Crime Agency are investigating.

Last night, a source said: “This is an astonishing find — and a serious security breach.

“Someone has smuggled it on to the flight so it’s very worrying, and it could potentially have been a more dangerous substance.

“They were hoping to pick it up and recover it in the UK but were undone when the flight went for its service.

“The block had been well hidden for someone to retrieve later.

“Whoever it was got unlucky, because the plane was taken into a hangar for a check-over, like a car’s MoT.

“That’s when the find was made — and it was in a panel behind a bin in the toilet.

“It’s quite likely to have been hidden there by a member of staff of some sort — either a fight attendant or baggage handler or cleaner.

“It’s unlikely to have been a member of the public because they would not have been able to get on the plane to pick it up later.

“Whoever it is, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes now as they’ve lost something of value to criminals.”

British Airways did not comment because of the police investigation.

But a government spokesperson said: “Those who attempt to smuggle illegal drugs into the UK should be in no doubt Border Force will find them.”

Hollywood hellraiser Mickey Rourke seen for first time since CBB axe as actor mopes on steps of posh London hotel

MICKEY Rourke moped on the steps of his hotel as he was seen for the first time since losing his £500k Celebrity Big Brother fee.

The star, 72, was yesterday axed for using threatening language and behaviour, as well as making an inappropriate sexual remark.

Earlier today he was pictured without his trademark cowboy hat, holding a coffee cup and his sunglasses and dressed in a grey hoodie, with his belt hanging down over his baggy jeans.

Mickey was told to leave the house after squaring up to Love Island star Chris Hughes, 32.

The pair were at loggerheads when tempers rose during a pirate task.

After Chris gave Mickey the side-eye, the Hollywood hellraiser told him: “Don’t eyeball me, you c***”.

He then threatened to knock him to the ground.

Danny Beard stepped in between the pair in an attempt to diffuse the situation, as he insisted: “He was joking. He was joking. He was joking.”

Later, Mickey is dragged into the diary room by Big Brother, who tells him his language and behaviour was “seriously unacceptable”, adding: “As a result Big Brother has no option but to ask you to leave the Big Brother house.”

Mickey responded saying: “I blame myself, I know it was my bad. You know, I’ve got a short fuse and I know I upset a lot of people out there, you know. And I’m sorry for that.

“I’m actually ashamed of myself for getting that hot.

“I went over the line, you know, I did wrong. I guess, like they say, I’m a work in progress.

“I just wanna pack my bags and leave, you know. I wanted to leave yesterday actually but I wasn’t chosen.

The Sun earlier revealed ITV bosses slashed Mickey’s £500,000 show fee after he repeatedly caused chaos in the house.

Mickey, who won a Bafta and was Oscar-nominated for 2008 film The Wrestler, first came under fire when he directed offensive slurs at US singer JoJo Siwa, who is a lesbian.

He also reduced Patsy Palmer to tears by repeatedly criticising her cooking.

Then it was revealed Mickey had left Ella Rae Wise feeling “uneasy” when he made a comment towards her, which Big Brother described as inappropriate sexual language.

News of their split comes after The Sun On Sunday revealed he had been admonished by BBC bosses for brandishing a sex toy in a video backstage on the tour.

Jamie, 30, chose to keep his relationship with Chloe out of the spotlight and has been photographed with her only once – when they had dinner in London in October.

Those close to Chloe said she ended their relationship after Jamie’s stint on the live run of shows across the country finished.

A source said: “Strictly was a whirlwind for Jamie and they managed to keep it going when he was on the show.

“But Chloe dumped Jamie when he finished the Strictly tour. She said she felt like Jamie didn’t have time for her.

“Seeing the video of him with the sex toy and acting so weirdly made her realise it was the right choice. Jamie acts like a boy in a man’s body. She doesn’t have time for that.”

The Sun On Sunday reported yesterday that Jamie, who plays Jay Brown in EastEnders, and singer Wynne Evans were reprimanded by BBC bosses for mucking about with the sex toy in Birmingham.

Jamie filmed himself with the object.

Ex-England boss Gareth Southgate changes career as he turns back on football, according to paperwork seen by The Sun

GARETH Southgate looks to have retired as a football manager — by changing his profession on paper to “company director”.

His last match in charge of England was last summer, when Spain beat the Three Lions 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.

The 54-year-old said after leaving the England job that he would not return to a coaching role for at least a year.

Now former England defender Gareth has given his clearest indication yet that he is packing in football management for good.

Documents for MAS Investment Holdings Limited — the business that handles his £6.2million property portfolio — reveal he has changed his profession from “football manager” to “company director”.

The move seems to back up Gary Lineker, who said after the Euro 2024 final: “I suspect this might be his last game in management.”

Gareth, who lives in North Yorkshire with wife Alison, had been tipped for a Premier League job, and was linked with Man United before they hired Ruben Amorim.

Instead, he has been taking on temporary roles.

Gareth is a technical observer for European football’s ruling body Uefa and a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School in the US.

He is also writing a self-help book, which is to focus on leadership.

It is expected to feature some of the lessons he learned while guiding the Three Lions to two successive European Championship finals.
