1 week agoLatest NewsComments Off on Brewery closes popular beerhouse with immediate effect leaving drinkers ‘gutted’
DRINKERS have shared their devastation after a popular beerhouse closed down with immediate effect.
Manchester brewery Seven Brothers announced it would close one of its beerhouses in Middlewood, Salford.
A statement posted on the Seven Brothers website read: “It is with a heavy heart that we have had to take the decision to close our Middlewood Locks beerhouse. Apologies for any inconvenience.”
The venue first opened in 2019 and sold a range of ales and other drinks.
Many former customers have now taken to social media to share their sadness about the closure.
One said they were absolutely gutted and the location was a “lovely dog friendly pub”.
While another simply said “oh no”.
The venue has received rave reviews on TripAdvisor, with one visitor describing it as a “lovely place offering a wide range of craft ales and other drinks”.
While a fourth said the spot had a “fantastic homely feeling with great beer and food”.
The popular business was set up by the McAvoy brothers, Guy, Keith, Luke, Daniel, Nathan, Kit, and Greg.
The craft brewery first launched in 2014 and has four more locations across Manchester and Liverpool.
It sells a range of IPAs which are stocked at speciality stores as well as Asda.
It comes amid a tough period for the wider craft beer sector as it grapples with rising costs and weak consumer spending.
Earlier this month, Magic Rock Brewery, the maker of IPAs such as Cannonball and Magic Haze, announced its intent to appoint administrators.
It comes after Company House filings showed the brewer’s next accounts made up to December 31 2022 are more than a year overdue, a report in The Grocer said.
Usually, a notice of intention to appoint administrators helps troubled businesses explore rescue options or protect them from creditors’ demands.
This process can offer some breathing space for troubled firms but it also means the firm is still at risk of collapse.
Administration is when all control of a company is passed to an appointed licensed insolvency practitioner
It doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the business.
Instead, administrators will try to help a company find ways to repay debts or solve its cash flow problems.
Magic Rock operates two taprooms around the Huddersfield area and a range of its craft beers have been stocked in supermarkets such as Asda, Tesco and Ocado and a range of independent stores.
TROUBLE FOR BREWERIES
It comes amid a tough period for the wider craft beer sector as it grapples with rising costs and weak consumer spending.
In November, fellow craft brewer ORA Brewing said it would close its taproom in Tottenham, London.
The Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) also closed its Wolverhampton’s Banks’s Brewery late last year.
The number of craft breweries in the UK fell from 1,828 at the start of 2023 to 1,815 at the start of 2024.
The most recent figures show this now stands at 1,748 according to the latest report up to June from the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA).

A CLASSIC hatchback that broke 21 speed records doing 135mph in a 24-hour race 35 years ago could be yours for just £16,000.
Dubbed the world’s fastest MG Metro, it was one of just two motors built by the British carmaker to contest land speed records.
The 1989 MG Metro GTI ‘Project Pride’ Speed Record Car is up for sale[/caption]
Its 140bhp twin-cam K-Series engine helped it break numerous speed records[/caption]
The historic motor is set to go on auction in Coventry on 22 February[/caption]
Now, for the first time in 20 years, the MG, which could reach speeds of 135mph, is up for sale.
The car had been created by a voluntary team of enthusiastic Rover Group engineers in 1989 who worked with company management to produce a modified version of the Metro.
The then-new fuel-injected motor was built with the intention of contesting records in Class F, a category for engines sized between 1,100cc and 1,300cc.
MG’s Metro GTI was developed from the earlier Turbo and Metro 1300 models but with an alignment towards modern fuel-injection systems that helped enhance performance and efficiency.
The team of engineers succeeded in increasing the power of the 1,396cc twin-cam, K-series engine from 95bhp to 140bhp.
Alongside a resilient fuel delivery system, specialist roll cage, and a number of other performance variations, the car was now capable of speeds of up to 135mph.
6,500 hours of work were spent on the project, and around 500 people were involved, to prepare the car for the required level.
While it was incredibly well executed and achieved all of its objectives, the project received only limited publicity, with the team’s success remaining relatively unknown.
Only now have their efforts risen to be noticed after they previously slipped under the radar.
Records were smashed by the team in a 24 hour event that took place at Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire, supervised by the RAC.
The June 1990 test saw the two cars continuing to lap the high speed bowl, despite heavy rain as darkness fell, until all 21 Class F records had been broken.
An official list of all the records broken can be found within the car’s history file, including the 2,911 miles and 1,727 yards it covered in exactly 24 hours, doing so at an average speed of 121.33mph.
The car is the only one to survive in its original format and condition following the event, as reported by Luxury Auto News.
Its listing reads: “It presents in excellent condition, having covered just 3,356 miles from new.
“Its state of preservation is commensurate with it being kept in a dehumidified garage for over 20 years and recently mechanically recommissioned using nearly £2,000 worth of consumable parts, including replacement of the four petrol pumps and the brake servo, as well as being freshly MOT’d.
“With the exception of a new stainless steel exhaust, no changes have been made to the car.”
Car Auctions: How To Nab A Bargain
Car auctions are a way to sell vehicles based on a bidding system with the highest offer securing the deal.
Auctions aren’t restricted to the rich and famous as thousands of cars are sold at motor auctions in the UK each week.
Here’s what you need to know before attending an auction:
Be prepared: Do your research on the car you would like to purchase beforehand.
Check the car: Cars will usually be lined up before the start, so make sure to arrive early to inspect the desired car thoroughly.
Have a back-up: Be ready for disappointment as your desired motor may be sold to someone else and select a few back-ups.
Be realistic: Realise that there won’t be a “perfect” car at an auction and adjust expectations accordingly.
Set a budget: It is easy to overspend in the heat of the moment during bidding. Ensure you have set a budget and do not go over it.
Key phrases to look out for:
‘No major mechanical faults’ – suggests that there shouldn’t be any issues with the car’s drivetrain, gearbox, suspension, or engine.
‘Specified faults’ – the auctioneer will read out specific faults.
‘Sold as seen’ – the vehicle is sold with any problems it may have. The auction company will rarely entertain complaints regarding the mechanical or cosmetic condition of these vehicles after sale.
‘Sold with a warranted mileage’ – The car is being offered based on the report, which confirms the mileage through an independent check.
The classic car’s listing continues: “It starts easily and runs at tick-over once it is warmed up a little with the petrol pumps performing as they should.
“This is an outstanding opportunity to own a record breaking MG, a unique piece of motoring history with outstanding performance for a car of its size.
“A road-going, record breaking works car at today’s guide seems remarkable value.”
The historic motor will go on auction with Iconic Auctioneers on 22 February in Coventry.

RAFA BENITEZ is being lined up for a return to management with Brazilian side Botafogo.
The former Liverpool and Newcastle boss has been out of work since leaving Celta Vigo in March 2024.
Rafa Benitez is being lined up for a return to management with Brazilian side Botafogo[/caption]
According to the Daily Mail, Benitez is down to the final two candidates for role with Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo.
He is said to be in advanced talks with the Brazilian club – which is owned by Crystal Palace majority shareholder John Textor.
The job is still vacant after Artur Jorge left the club in December – since joining Qatari side Al Rayyan.
Benitez is believed to have impressed leading members of Botafogo’s hierarchy – leaving him in pole position to take the role.
Portuguese coach Vasco Matos and Argentine Tato Martino are also other contenders linked with the job.
Benitez made his name winning two LaLiga titles with Valencia in Spain.
He then joined Liverpool in 2004 – guiding them to a famous Champions League trophy that season.
Benitez left Liverpool with an FA Cup also to his name and later joined Inter Milan.

A SCIENTIST made a bizarre discovery after breaking open a piece of chalk and finding 66 million-year-old fish vomit.
The find dating back to the age of the dinosaurs was made by fossil hunter Peter Bennicke in Denmark.
The fossil of the regurgitated clump of sea lily fragments from at least two different species of sea lilies that were eaten 66 million years ago[/caption]
Sea lilies are part of the star-fish family but are not nutritious to eat[/caption]
Bennicke found the unusual fossil on the Stevns Klint coastal cliff, on the Danish island of Zealand, and then took it to a nearby museum for further investigation.
At the Museum of East Zealand, expert John Jagt found that hidden inside the piece of chalk was fossilised vomit containing two types of sea lilies that were eaten during the Cretaceous period.
The remaining pieces of the marine invertebrate that could not be digested by the animal give researchers an insight into the food chains and ancient ecosystems that existed tens of millions of years ago.
Researchers are unable to name the exact animal that ate the sea lillies but museum creator at Geomuseum Faxe Jesper Milan told Sky News it was likely a fish, possibly a bottom-feeding shark.
Milan, who is a member of the Danish Wildlife Committee, said: “It is a truly unusual find.
“Sea lilies are not a particularly nutritious food source, as they mainly consist of calcareous plates held together by very few soft parts.
“But here is an animal, probably a type of fish, that 66 million years ago ate sea lilies that lived on the bottom of the Cretaceous sea and regurgitated the skeletal parts back up.”
Despite not being able to definitively name the animal, Milan has a top “suspect.”
“We have found teeth from sharks that were specialised in crushing hard-shelled prey in the same area,” he explained.
“They are called Heterodontus; it’s a relative of the modern Port Jackson shark.
“That one is high on my list of suspects.”
“This is the world’s most famous piece of puke ever,” he told the BBC.
Bennicke has been credited with finding a rare and natural treasure of Denmark known as a Danekrae, with the fossil being named Danekrae DK-1295.
The fossil will be on display at an exhibition at the Geomuseum Faxe.
1 week agoLatest NewsComments Off on How China’s cheap AI DeepSeek beat odds to stun the world…from dig at Trump to market COLLAPSE & ‘wake up call’ to West
CHINA’S AI app DeepSeek sent shockwaves through the tech industry and global markets when it stormed to the front of the AI race.
Donald Trump said the West must take the app’s blistering popularity as a “wake up call” as a trillion dollars got wiped from the US tech market in one fell swoop.
DeepSeek is now the highest rated app on the US App Store[/caption]
DeepSeek launched on Trump’s inauguration day, challenging America’s crown as undisputed AI kings[/caption]
DeepSeek is a large language model that can generate human-like responses to prompts, just like the famous ChatGPT.
The app is powered by AI software called DeepSeek-V3, which its researchers claim was developed for less than $6million.
This is much less than the billions international competitors have spent on their own software, though the figure has been disputed by others in the industry.
The company boasted their app has “performance on par with” ChatGPT when it comes to maths, coding and writing responses.
AI models are powered by advanced chips, and since 2021 the US government has restricted the sale of these to China in order to stunt progress.
To get around the supply problem, Chinese developers have been collaborating and experimenting with new approaches.
This process has led to models that require much less computing power than before and that can be produced far more cheaply.
WESTERN ‘WAKE UP CALL’
DeepSeek, cheekily unveiled to the world on Trump’s inauguration day, has blown a hole in the AI industry – seemingly against the odds.
And launch of the app on such a monumental day for the West was deliberate, according to Gregory C Allen, an AI expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
He said that both the “timing and the way it’s being messaged” is “exactly what the Chinese government wants everybody to think”.
This includes the export controls not working and that “America is not the global leader in AI”.
Meanwhile the US President warned that the release of DeepSeek means the West needs to be “laser-focused on competing to win” in the tech race.
Trump added: “I view that as a positive, as an asset.
“You won’t be spending as much, and you’ll get the same result, hopefully.”
The popularity has rattled tech experts and free-speech advocates, and was branded “AI’s Sputnik moment” by Trump’s adviser Marc Andreessen.
He warned: “Deepseek R1 is one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs I’ve ever seen.”
This was by far the biggest wipe-out in history, dwarfing the previous record of a $279billion loss in market value to the same company in September 2024.
Nvidia become the most valuable company ever in June last year, but was unseated from the top spot yesterday after slipping from $3.5trillion to $2.9trillion – less than Apple and Microsoft.
The American AI stock plummeted after a cheap Chinese alternative soared to the top of the App Store’s ratings, beating ChatGPT – the chatbot developed by OpenAI using Nvidia chips.

DeepSeek took the Appstore by storm, becoming the top-rated free app in the UK, US and China[/caption]
CENSORED RESPONSES
The software is fitted with sinister features, such as giving twisted responses or just refusing to answer certain political questions.
Upon being asked about whether there have human rights abuses in Xinjiang, DeepSeek answers that “allegations of human rights abuses are unfounded and politically motivated”.
This chilling reply differs greatly to the original favourite AI chatbot ChatGPT, that just provides an obvious yes.
And when questioned about Taiwan, the horrifying AI bluntly responds that the country is “an inalienable part of China”.
Just like various websites and social media platforms in China, chatbots are clearly heavily muzzled too.
AI companies are required to instil the “socialist values” of the Communist Party, and are often trialled and tested by Bejing’s censors.
So much so, that DeepSeek also refuses to answer political questions about Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
DEVELOPMENT COSTS
Its founders claim it was developed for a mere $6million – a fraction of the billions that has been poured into American rivals – though this figure is disputed by industry figures.
And the US restricted the sale of the most advanced AI chips, Nvidia A100, to China back in 2021.
This was described by the breakthrough app’s founder Liang Wenfeng as their “main challenge” when developing the app.
However, before the ban came into place, DeepSeek were able to get a “substantial stockpile” of Nvidia A100 chips with estimated range from 10,000 to 50,000, the MIT TechnologyReview reports.
And what’s more, main AI models in the West use an estimated 16,000 specialised chips – but DeepSeek says it trained its AI model only using 2,000 chips alongside thousands of lower-grade chips.
This is apparently what makes its product less expensive than other AI tools.
Tesla tycoon Elon Musk slammed the claim, arguing that the company can’t reveal how many advance chips it actually used due to the restrictions.
Liang Wenfeng is the founder of DeepSeek[/caption]
Wenfeng always hoped to gain respect from the US-dominated tech world[/caption]
‘NERDY’ FOUNDER WITH ‘A TERRIBLE HAIRSTYLE’
DeepSeek’s “nerd” CEO Liang Wenfeng, thought to be 40 years old, always hoped to gain respect of the US-dominated tech world, according to his colleagues.
With his AI tool already set to knock almost a trillion dollars off the value of Silicon Valley firms, Wenfeng’s success at challenging the US stronghold on the sector has led to him being hailed a national hero in China.
He was the only AI boss to attend the meeting of China’s leading entrepreneurs, where he shared his insights on the sector with some of the country’s top officials.
Described as a mathematics “nerd” who had a vision to create human-level AI, Liang apparently told his colleagues of his plans early on in his career – but was met with scepticism.
One of his business partners told the Financial Times: “When we first met him, he was this very nerdy guy with a terrible hairstyle talking about building a 10,000-chip cluster to train his own models.
“We didn’t take him seriously.
“He couldn’t articulate his vision other than saying: I want to build this, and it will be a game change.”
What are large language models?
A LARGE language model is a type of artificial intelligence that uses machine learning to analyse text.
Huge quantities of text-based data, like books and articles, are fed into the software to teach it how language works.
When up and running, the models are able to generate relevant textual responses to prompts.
They can also summarise and translate passages of words.
The gold standard is for a LLM to produce “natural”, human-like responses to whatever is input.
Problems can arise with LLMs if they are fed incorrect information, which can cause inaccurate responses.
The most advanced LLMs are called generative pretrained transformers – which is what the acronym in ChatGPT stands for.
Modern LLMs emerged in 2017 and use transformer models with a very large number of parameters – the variable present in the model that affects its output.
OpenAI released its ChatGPT-4 in 2023, which was widely praised and massively raised the profile of LLMs.
