Information vacuum after Southport murders let lies spread and riots erupt, MPs warn
AN INFORMATION vacuum in the wake of the Southport murders led to lies and rumours on social media fuelling riots, MPs have said.
The near-silence from cops allowed false stories to spread that killer Axel Rudakubana was an asylum-seeker.

Migrant hotels became targets in the unrest, with investigators struggling to set the record straight.
The Home Affairs Select Committee is now calling for a review of what police can put into the public domain.
Chairwoman Dame Karen Bradley said: “The criminal justice system needs its approach to communication to be fit for the social media age.”
Rudakubana targeted children at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class – stabbing three to death and injuring 10 others.
The teen dramatically pleaded guilty to all 16 charges against him in a surprise development even the judge was not aware of.
He also pleaded guilty to one charge of the “production of a biological toxin, namely ricin, contrary to Section 1 of the Biological Weapons Act 1974”.
This related to an Al-Qaeda manual and ricin that were found at his home following the attack.
It was the first time Rudakubana had spoken out loud in court after refusing to open his mouth throughout proceedings.
Speaking through a surgical mask, he replied “guilty” as all 16 counts were put to him one-by-one.

Skin cancer patients given fast-tracked access to ‘revolutionary’ cancer vaccine trial on NHS
SKIN cancer patients are set to get a potentially life-saving vaccine, as part of the expansion of a “ground-breaking” NHS trial.
The needle-free injection boosts the immune system, helping the body recognise, attack and ‘remember’ cancer cells – to help stop the disease from returning.

It will be given to those patients diagnosed with advanced melanoma – the deadliest form of the skin cancer, which causes 2,340 deaths each year in the UK – from next month.
It comes a week after the Prime Minister announced plans for a new health data research service, to accelerate development of therapies and medicines.
Granddad-of-four, Paul Thomas, from Hampshire, is among the first patients to take part in the SCOPE trial.
Diagnosed with advanced melanoma in 2017, the 63-year-old’s cancer kept returning, despite treatment.
Since joining the trial last year, the window cleaner’s tumours have significantly shrunk.
“I feel so lucky to be put on the trial,” he said. “Every time I go for a scan they [tumours] seem to be shrinking, which is really exciting.
“I’m really hoping for total eradication of my cancer, as opposed to being put in remission and I’m feeling optimistic.”
Cancer vaccines are an example of personalised medicine, a cutting-edge new approach to treatment that tailors therapies to patients’ genetic makeup.
Keir Starmer said: “This kind of innovation is nothing short of life-saving and I want to see more of these world-leading treatments being developed in the UK.”
The Government’s Plan for Change to cut red tape will put the UK at the forefront of medical research, the PM said.
“It will accelerate the discovery of transformative treatments and improve services for patients, driving growth across the country while making sure as many people as possible can benefit from cutting-edge treatments,” he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Peter Johnson, NHS national cancer director said these new vaccines have the potential to “revolutionise cancer care for patients – and save lives”.
“It’s incredibly exciting that the NHS is expanding its world-leading programme so more patients with different types of cancer could benefit from the development of new vaccines that could stop their cancer coming back,” he said.
The vaccine iSCIB1+, developed by Oxford-based Scancell, is the latest to be trialled under NHS England’s Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad – 10,000 patients in England are set to get their very own disease-busting jab by 2030.
The Launch Pad has already seen more than 350 patients fast-tracked onto trials for a bowel cancer jab.
Melanoma skin cancer can be deadly and it’s sadly on the rise in the UK.
Susanna Daniels
Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer, diagnosed around 17,500 times a year, and cases have risen by a third in a decade, according to Cancer Research UK.
While standard immunotherapy treatment works for around half of melanoma patients, those who don’t respond face a higher risk of their disease spreading.
Minister of State for Health, Karin Smyth, said: “As someone who has overcome skin cancer, I know that every advancement in treatment brings hope to patients and their families.”
The new DNA vaccine targets specific biomarkers that are specific to melanoma tumours, that act as a red flag to alert the immune system.
This triggers the activation of T cells in the blood, which seek out, attack and destroy the cancer cells.
It creates a lasting response, an immune ‘memory’ that helps prevent the cancer returning.
To be eligible, advanced melanoma patients who have yet to receive treatment, will first need to have a blood test to determine their tissue type.
Susanna Daniels, CEO of Melanoma Focus, said: “Melanoma skin cancer can be deadly and it’s sadly on the rise in the UK.
“We’re delighted to see progress in innovative treatments.
“The use of vaccines to treat melanoma is an exciting development and we will be encouraging eligible patients to take part.”
Major cancer breakthroughs shaping the future of treatment
IT’S a worrying fact that more than half of us will get cancer in our lifetime.
Each year around 385,000 people are diagnosed and 167,000 lives are lost to the disease in the UK . . . and experts have warned of an alarming new surge in the young.
But, in the face of rising cases, there is good news — the future of cancer care looks brighter.
Personalised medicine
Perhaps the most exciting new avenue of research is tailoring medicine to treat a patient’s cancer based on their own tumour’s genetic make-up.
Professor Lawrence Young, an oncologist who has been working in cancer research for 40 years, says: “We’ve learnt that by profiling the genetics, you almost get a barcode for an individual’s cancer.
“Just because somebody’s got the same stage and grade of cancer, doesn’t mean it should be treated the same, or with a particular combination of drugs.”
Some 10,000 patients in England are set to get their very own disease-busting jab by 2030, through the NHS Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad.
Immunotherapy
Dubbed the “biggest breakthrough since chemo”, immunotherapy harnesses the power of the immune system to fight cancer.
Antibodies seek out and mark the diseased cells for destruction but spare surrounding healthy tissue, unlike chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Prof Young says: “We’ve known for 100 years the body tries to fight cancer with the immune system but it doesn’t really work.
“Cancer cleverly learns how to get around the immune response. It can switch off the way the immune system recognises it – but these antibodies can switch it back on again.
“Antibodies are effective alone, but where they are most effective is in combination with another type of immunotherapy.”
Targeted cancer drugs
These work more precisely to stop cancer cells from dividing and growing, while limiting damage to healthy cells – and their uses are expanding.
Prof Young says: “This is targeting the machinery of the genetic mutations that drive cancer.
“Some are targets we’ve known about for years but were difficult, until recently, to develop drugs for.
“The normal growth of our cells is controlled by switches which become mutated and permanently switched on in cancer cells.
“Now, after years of research, we have targeted drugs which can switch off these growth signals.”
Blood tests
Early diagnosis is still the best weapon against cancer and its devastating impacts.
Blood tests are becoming increasingly sensitive in spotting the disease, and can “identify minuscule amounts of DNA shed from tumour cells into the blood”, Prof Young says.
Prof Young says: “Current blood tests aren’t that great. For example, we measure the proteins PSA, for prostate cancer, or CEA, for ovarian cancer, but they’re not very specific.
“We want to do our best to cure cancer with early diagnosis, and with these interesting blood tests it might be possible to identify cancer early and remove it before we get too far.”
Horse racing tips: ‘Handicapper can’t keep up with him’ – Templegate’s Monday NAP
TEMPLEGATE’S Monday picks are below.
Back a horse by clicking their odds.
PARTISAN HERO (4.05 Pontefract, nap)
He won here cosily last week and has the perfect draw again to kick on and make all. He has the handicapper on the run at the moment and can streak clear again in a quiet race.
RUMBA BAY (3.05 Pontefract, nb)
Has been in fine form of late and will take all the beating. He has a bit to prove back on turf but a 3lb rise for his latest win looks very generous. It is still early days for this horse with his trainer and he looks set to rise through the ranks now.
AUDACIOUS ANNIE (6.10 Warwick, treble)
Improved to win a quiet race at Wetherby last time. This doesn’t look much harder despite a penalty and trainer Jamie Snowden is finishing the season strongly. She’ll like the quick ground too.
QITAAL (3.35 Pontefract, Lucky 15)
Returned with a rock solid third at Doncaster and should get right amongst it here with a repeat effort. He enjoys tight, turning tracks and this trip is spot on for him.

Earth’s ocean might turn PURPLE one day – and scientists say it used to be a totally different colour too
THE Earth’s ocean could one day turn purple – and scientists say it used to be a totally different colour.
When observed from space, the Earth appears as a mass of dark blue ocean.

But Japanese researchers have argued that the colour of the ocean is far from stable – as it is wholly dependent on water chemistry and its influence on the organisms that live underwater.
For example, high volcanic activity and low oxygen levels in the atmosphere could lead to high sulphur levels – in-turn leading to an increase in purple sulphur bacteria and therefore turning the ocean purple.
Equally, the seas could also theoretically turn red under intense tropical climates.
These conditions see rocks decay, producing red oxidised iron – which is then transported into the oceans via rivers.
Red oceans could also be theoretically be caused by an increase in red algae.
These already thrive in areas with intense an concentration of nitrogen, such as near sewers.
The study, published in the Nature journal, also made the argument that the Earth’s oceans used to be green rather than blue.
They landed on the findings after first analysing the waters around the Japanese volcanic island of Iwo Jima – and the blue green algae within them.
And the seas could once again turn green if the phytoplankton population continues to increase – driven by rising temperatures.
The news comes after it was revealed that an ocean full of alien life could be hiding on an icy moon system not far from earth.
The moon, named Miranda, orbits the planet Uranus – just 1.7 billion miles away in our very own solar system.
It is now believed to have a hidden ocean, trapped under a layer of ice, according to a recent study.
The presence of water on the moon means it could harbour alien life.
No extra-terrestrial life has ever been discovered by scientists, but it could include intelligent, non-human beings.
The ocean could be as large as 62 miles deep, underneath an icy crust that’s 19 miles thick.
Planetary scientist Tom Nordheim, who did the study along with fellow scientists Caleb Strom and Alex Patthoff, expressed his astonishment at the findings.
He said: “To find evidence of an ocean inside a small object like Miranda is incredibly surprising.
“It helps build on the story that some of these moons at Uranus may be really interesting – that there may be several ocean worlds around one of the most distant planets in our solar system, which is both exciting and bizarre.”

Shock new feud as Angellica snaps at Celebrity Big Brother star and fights back tears after Mickey Rourke row
CELEBRITY Big Brother fans have spotted a brand new feud between two very unlikely housemates.
Tensions were high on tonight’s show after Mickey Rourke made clashed with Love Island’s Chris Hughes and made a sexual innuendo towards Towie’s Ella Rae Wise.

Mickey was called to the Diary Room and was axed from the series by Big Brother.
But during the commotion, the rest of the housemates were feeling the pressure.
Angellica and Donna Preston were having a quiet chat, before EastEnders star Patsy Palmer strolled over.
Patsy overheard Donna saying “I’m leaving now”, which prompted her to ask if she was “alright”.
The soap star said to Donna: “Are you staying,” after she misheard her saying she was leaving the house.
But an upset Angellica said to Patsy: “You just came over and you asked her if she was okay… what about me?”
Angellia’s voice then broke and she tried to fight back tears: “You rarely ask me if I’m okay.
Pasty appeared apologetic but explained: “Oh Ange, I’m sorry.”
Angellica explained: “Because it does affect all of us,” to which Patsy said: “It does that’s right.”
The Walford star clarified: “I just thought I heard her say she was leaving.”
Angellia replied: “I’m just explaining to you, I’ve been in a position in my life, in my job, where I’ve been afraid to say things.”
Patsy and Angellica then hugged it out, with the soap star saying: “I don’t want you to think that.”
Donna added: “This place, it’s got us in a weird place and I don’t like it.”
CBB fans were left baffled by Angellica’s reaction tonight.
One wrote: “What is going on in this CBB. Did Angellica Bell just front Patsy Palmer for not asking how she was…?“
A second posted: “Thought Angellica was gonna square up to Patsy then wtf!? “WHY DO YOU NEVER ASK IF I’M OKAY!?”
Another said: “Angellica are you joking omg what the f***.”
It later kicked off when Mickey was left furious after being thrown the side eye by Chris who hit back: “Mickey it was a joke, f***ing…”
Mickey cut in, telling the Love Island star aggressively: “Don’t f***ing eyeball me. You c***.”
Housemates tried to diffuse the situation, as Danny insisted: “He was joking. He was joking. He was joking.”
Chris then told Mickey to “f***ing stand there” before Danny and Daley stepped in between the pair.
Big Brother then intervened, saying: “This is Big Brother. Mickey, come to the diary room immediately.”
Mickey pointed to the ground and appeared to threaten Chris by telling him: “No, your a** will be right there in a second.”
Big Brother stepped in once again and insisted: “Mickey, come to the diary room immediately.”
Following a conversation with Big Brother in the Diary Room about his behaviour, Mickey returned to the garden and apologised to Chris. Mickey then heads inside.
Chris says to other housemates, “Mickey’s just Mickey, you know what I mean.”
Ella responds, “It’s fine – you can be just someone, but be mindful of what it can trigger in other people, because it’s made me feel very uneasy.”
Ella then referenced a comment Mickey made earlier in the day about how it made her uncomfortable.
She broke down in tears and said to Patsy that she found his comment inappropriate and was “not a piece of meat”.
Patsy said: “It’s a bit too much, I’ve got a daughter.”
Mickey axed
After Mickey eventually headed into the diary room, Big Brother told him: “Mickey, Big Brother needs to speak to you about your behaviour.
“Earlier today in a disagreement with Chris, your language and behaviour was threatening and aggressive.
“Big Brother does not tolerate threatening language or behaviour. In addition, you have used inappropriate sexual language to Ella.”
Mickey added: “Oh, I’m not aware of that but okay.”
Big Brother said: “This language has caused offence to your fellow housemates and could cause offence to the viewing public. This is not the first time Big Brother has had to speak to you about your offensive and inappropriate language.”
Mickey said: “Yes sir. I did wrong. I apologise. I’m sorry. I can’t take it back, you know, I stepped over the line. And I take responsibility for doing the wrong thing.
“Because I lost my temper, and I’ve been trying to work on it my whole life and I wish I would have had better self-control and I’m very sorry.
“I’m ashamed of myself for losing it for a few seconds there. Nobody got touched or hurt.
“Maybe some feelings got hurt or maybe others have feelings about others getting upset but, you know, I’m sorry about that.”
Big Brother then told Mickey his language and behaviour was “seriously unacceptable”, adding: “As a result Big Brother has no option but to ask you to leave the Big Brother house.”
Mickey responded saying: “I blame myself, I know it was my bad. You know, I’ve got a short fuse and I know I upset a lot of people out there, you know. And I’m sorry for that.
“I’m actually ashamed of myself for getting that hot.
“I went over the line, you know, I did wrong. I guess, like they say, I’m a work in progress.
“I just wanna pack my bags and leave, you know. I wanted to leave yesterday actually but I wasn’t chosen.”
Mickey was then seen leaving through the back door and was unable to return to the house to say his goodbyes.
The rest of the housemates found out about Mickey’s fate when Big Brother told them later on.

Masters tie break rules: How does playoff format work?
THE fight for this year’s Masters crown and the famous Green Jacket is reaching fever pitch.
Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose are battling it out in a topsy-turvy 2025 final.

But as we all know, golf is unpredictable and things can change in an instant – and the prospect of a playoff is very much on the table.
How does playoff format work at The Masters?
On a golf leaderboard, players can finish tied for any position – except first.
There can only be one winner at the Masters this weekend and a playoff helps decide that scenario.
If any number of players at the top of the leaderboard finish on the same score after four days of tough competition, they will enter the playoff.
At The Masters, they play what is called a sudden-death format.
Instead of a lengthy playoff, this system is designed to be as fast and exciting as possible.

The players will first play the 18th hole and see who can post the best score.
If everyone shoots the same, the playoff will continue to the 10th hole where the competitors will again attempt to post the lowest score.

The mini-shootout will continue between these two holes until a winner is found.
2017 was the last time the Masters went to a playoff, with Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia the two who couldn’t be separated at the top of the leaderboard.
The Spaniard ended up victorious after just one hole after Rose shanked his drive into the trees, while Sergio birdied to take the Green Jacket.
This sudden-death format is only used in the Masters, with the US Open employing a two-hole aggregate playoff.
And at both the Open and USPGA, playoffs are stroke-play formats but take place over a fewer number of holes (four at The Open and three at the USPGA).
Russell Brand faces fresh allegations after ‘more women come forward to police’ after rape and sexual assault charges
RUSSELL Brand is facing further allegations after more women have come forward to the police, it has emerged.
The comedian and actor, 49, who has been charged with rape and sexual assault, is facing complaints from at least three more women.

They reportedly contacted the Met Police after the Crown Prosecution Service authorised five sex offence charges against Brand on April 4.
The star’s supporters are also said to have sent threats and abuse to investigating police through an email address shared by Scotland Yard to gather information.
There is no suggestion Brand is involved.
He has denied all allegations and will fly back from Florida — where he now lives with his wife — to appear before Westminster magistrates on May 2.
Detectives began investigating after receiving a number of allegations in September 2023.
It followed reporting by Channel 4‘s Dispatches and The Sunday Times.
The Metropolitan Police said the charges relate to four women between 1999 and 2005.
Brand has previously denied the accusations, and said all his sexual relationships were “absolutely always consensual”.
He has been charged with the rape of a woman in 1999 in the Bournemouth area and the oral rape and sexual assault of a woman in 2004 in the Westminster area of London.
He has also been charged with indecently assaulting a woman in 2001 and sexually assaulting another woman between 2004 and 2005 – both offences are alleged to have taken place in Westminster, London.
Brand will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers.
“The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.”
In a video posted to X, Brand denied the alleged crimes.
He said: “I’ve always told you guys, when I was young and single, before I had my wife and family, I was a fool man.
“I was a drug addict, a sex addict, and an imbecile. But what I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity – I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.”
Brand was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry between 2010 and 2012.
In recent years, Brand has largely disappeared from mainstream media but has built up a large following online with videos mixing wellness and conspiracy theories.
He recently said he had moved to the United States.

Meet Rory McIlroy’s adorable daughter Poppy
RORY MCILROY’s daughter Poppy had one of the most memorable moments at The Masters 2025.
And she made her mother Erica and father Rory proud.

Meet Poppy McIlroy
Poppy Kennedy McIlroy was born on Aug. 31, 2020, in Jupiter, Florida. Rory shared the happy news on Instagram alongside a black-and-white photo of the newborn holding his pinky finger. “Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born August 31st, 12:15pm. She is the absolute love of our lives,” he captioned it.
Rory assured that “mother and baby are doing great” and wished a “massive thank you” to the medical staff at Jupiter Medical Center.
In a Golfweek interview, Rory revealed that he and Erica sought inspiration from nature, specifically flowers, while brainstorming potential baby names for their daughter. Rose and Iris were strong contenders, but throughout the process, they couldn’t shake the name Poppy.
“We really liked [Poppy]. I have a cousin of mine; her daughter is named Poppy. We know a few other Poppies. And we just really love the name,” he said.
Rory explained that Rose was ruled out after they realized it was too similar to his mother’s name, Rosie. A few of his pro golf buddies, including Alex Noran and Shane Lowry, also have daughters named Iris, and so they decided on Poppy.
“We wanted to go with something that was pretty unique, maybe more common back where I’m from, but we landed on Poppy and we loved it,”
What did Poppy do at the Masters 2025?
Rory Mcilroy‘s four-year-old daughter Poppy hit an incredible long putt as the golfer put on a loved-up display with wife Erica Stoll at the Masters.
Indeed, McIlroy’s kid showed her dad how it’s done.
The youngster enjoyed playing on hole No.9 and pulled off a brilliant shot that ended up going straight in.
World No2 McIlroy was delighted as he celebrated the terrific putt alongside pal Shane Lowry.
