Huge free adventure park that mums say is ‘one of the UK’s best’ to close ahead of £3million revamp

A HUGE free playground that was built as a royal memorial is to close ahead of a multi-million pound revamp.

The Diana Memorial Playground was built in 2000 inside Kensington Gardens.

As many as 1million people visit a year, with a huge pirate ship, beach and sensory trail.

However, it is set to close, with plans for a £3million redevelopment.

The Royal Parks charity, who runs the playground, that it would is “retain the characteristics of the existing Peter Pan-inspired playground”.

The Peter Pan elements comes from its history relating to the famous book, where it was thought to have inspired the author JM Barrie.

The garden’s park manager Andy Williams, said it would “provide more accessible and inclusive play, as well as challenging physical play, so that children of all abilities can enjoy creative and imaginative play together”.

This means the galleon ship will have new additions such as a crowds nest, wheel and telescope, as well as a double-storey stern.

A new multi-level treehouse will have a suspension bridge, new tunnel slide, seesaw bridge and slide.

And the water and sand area at the Mermaid Fountain will be expanded.

More trees and plants will be added along with seating areas and designated paths.

The playground will close from autumn 2025, and will reopen by spring 2026.

So kids will still have a chance to visit it this summer before the temporary closure.

Mums have previously raved about the park, with one saying it was the “the best playground we’ve visited”.

Another said: “Brilliant free playground, the best we’ve been to.”

Many said that they spent hours at the park, with enough to do for kids to stay entertained.

Thankfully there is also a coffee shop, snack stall and toilet block as well, so no rushing away for kids craving food.

Only kids with adults are allowed in, with a gated area and staff not allowing solo adults inside.

If you want to explore the rest of Kensington Gardens, you can also spot the unique ring-necked parakeets and even feed them.

Otherwise here is what it is like to visit the world’s largest play structure, which is right in the UK.

And the Netherlands is home to Europe’s largest playground.

We’ve even rounded up five of the best indoor attractions for when the weather turns.

Shamed rugby star Joe Westerman who was caught performing sex act with pal’s wife outside a Greggs gets engaged

SHAMED Rugby League star Joe Westerman who was caught performing sex act on wife’s pal is engaged to his new girlfriend.

The clip involving the England International, 34, surfaced on the eve of the Super League season in 2023 – and saw him axed from Castleford Tigers’ line-up.

The video, captured behind a Greggs bakery, went viral in February 2023

It was filmed in an alleyway behind a Greggs bakery before going viral, with Westerman’s wife Lauren confirming it wasn’t her.

Reports claimed it was a friend of hers before he was kicked out of his marital home.

However, Westerman went public with his new lover estate agent Alison Hopkins in late 2023.

The loved-up homewrecker posted beaming pictures of the couple on Instagram.

And now the Daily Mail reports that mother-of-two Alison has shared photos of the pair’s engagement celebrations to her private social media.

SEX VIDEO

Lauren was forced to furiously defend herself and deny she was the woman in the sex act clip at the time it emerged.

And, she hit back against trolls who said her 15-year-old daughter would have “seen much worse” than the X-rated clip.

The distraught mum-of-three fumed: “I don’t even have words to reply to your comment apart from I’m worried at what things you watch if you think there are worse things than this for a child to see on social media of her dad.”

In a statement she penned: “Can I make this VERY clear that this is NOT me.

“We have three children one of whom is almost 15 and she doesn’t need to see things like this all over social media!”

She previously told The Sun she had been sent the video before it was posted online.

“Truth is, he only told me because it was on social media,” she said.

“But I’m glad it was found because the thought of kissing him after that just makes me feel sick.”

The disgusted mum said: “I’ve relived that footage over and over again.

“It’s something I’ll never be able to get out of my mind, no matter how hard I try.”

But Westerman grovelled and sent text messages begging for his wife back: “Words will never ever explain how sorry I am.

“I can’t explain what happened cos I physically can’t remember.

“It’s disgusting and I now have to live with it forever.

“Losing you and the kids is heartbreaking Lauren, you deserve so much better.”

Another message read: “You always said alcohol would f*** me up.”

More followed, including: “I need you to know I can’t remember anything about that night. I look like a zombie.”

Westerman was also forced to issue a statement after his bombshell affair was exposed.

The 6ft 4ins Yorkshireman wrote an apology to family, friends, the club and to rugby league for his behaviour following a 15-hour booze fuelled bender.

It read: “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly apologise to my family and friends for my actions.

“I’d also like to apologise to the supporters, sponsors, staff, and directors of Castleford Tigers as well as my teammates.

“I’d like to extend this apology to the game of rugby league, and I have realised that I need to work on my decision-making around alcohol.”

Westerman, who made his breakthrough in 2007 with Castleford, spent spells with Hull, Warrington, Toronto and Wakefield before returning to his first club in 2022.

Shark welcomes baby pup despite living in tank WITHOUT males for 3 years – experts share bombshell ‘virgin birth’ theory

A SWELL shark egg has hatched a pup, despite being found in a tank with no males, stunned researchers at a Louisiana aquarium have announced.

The miraculous ‘virgin birth’ discovery was first made eight months ago.

Yoko the swell shark was born to a female that had not had contact with male sharks for three years[/caption]

Though the aquarium’s husbandry team say the egg could have gone unnoticed for an additional two months prior.

The swell shark pup, called Yoko, hatched on 3 January, and has been closely monitored ever since.

“We’re thrilled to announce the hatching of a new swell shark pup – without a male present,” the aquarium wrote in a Facebook post.

“Our team determined that the two female sharks residing in the tank had not been in contact with a male in over three years.

“This does suggest that either a phenomenon called parthenogenesis, a rare form of asexual reproduction, or delayed fertilisation, where fertilisation occurs long after mating, may have occurred.”

Parthenogenesis – how so-called ‘partho babies’ are born – is natural form of asexual reproduction in which an embryo can grow from an unfertilised egg.

Its a natural phenomenon has been observed in more than 80 species, from bees, to fleas, to scorpions and lizards.

Though researchers note that young sharks born in such extraordinary ways can face significant challenges, and may not survive to adulthood.

The pup will undergo DNA tests to determine whether it is a true ‘partho baby’ or a result of delayed fertilisation.

“This situation is incredible and shows the resilience of this species,” said Greg Barrick, the curator of live animals at Shreveport Aquarium.

“We are very excited in the coming months to confirm whether this was indeed a case of parthenogenesis or if it was delayed fertilisation.”

Charlotte the stingray

Charlotte the stingray similarly made headlines last year over her own miraculous pregnancy, having also been living in an all-female tank.

There were theories she may have mated with one of the young male bamboo sharks in her tank.

But it turned out Charlotte reproduced all on her own through parthenogenesis.

The process is incredibly rare, but has been seen in other kinds of sharks and rays while in human care.

These ‘virgin births’ are thought to be the key to protecting endangered species, rowing them back from the edge of extinction.

The pregnancy had been deemed “a once-in-a-lifetime science mystery,” by the Aquarium & Shark Lab, based in South Carolina.

From ITV Coronation Street Family Albums: The Battersby Family album. TX: Friday 23rd December 2005 In 1997 something very strange happened to Coronation Street - The Battersbys arrived! The cobbles were rocked with their brash, boisterous and brazen ways as upstanding residents looked on with horror at their new neighbours from hell. In Coronation Street Family Album the colourful and chaotic Battersby family come under the spotlight and actors Bruce Jones (Les), Vicky Entwistle (Janice), Jane Danson (Leanne), Georgia Taylor (Toyah) and Wendi Peters (Cilla) reveal what it's like to play characters that are truly larger than life. Over the years we've witnessed many a scam from lying Les, marvelled that Leanne's short-lived marriage to Nicky Platt actually lasted so long, and watched Janice's affair with Dennis end in tragedy. Now with the next Mrs Battersby 'Cod Cilla' joining the clan along with cheeky but cute son Chesney, the next generation of Battersbys are certainly a force to be reckoned with. The actress said she was ‘bullied’ into shaving her head on the soap[/caption]

Vicky Entwistle – who joined Coronation Street as Janice Battersby in 1997 – lashed out in a now deleted tweet.

The actress’ comments come as the Corrie cast crisis deepens on the hit ITV soap, with many of the top stars leaving the show.

Vicky posted a tweet where she claimed the soap made her shave her head for a storyline about nits.

The 2005 plot saw the character Sean Tully shave off Janice’s locks after she was concerned about having lice.

Actress Vicky now claims she was “bullied” into shaving her head and how it left her “heartbroken”

Taking to X/Twitter, she posted a throwback picture of herself with her shaved head together with her husband, Andrew Chapman.

She then wrote: “Flash back to the world!!

“A massive TV company bullied me to shave my head! I was heartbroken.

“When I landed on our front door in tears this man was one step ahead of me.

“After mopping up my sniffles he took me to a film premiere and made me own it!! That’s love I guess!

“If I was going to suffer a ridiculous storyline of NITS, then so was he.

“By this time we knew the writers were not only cruel and spiteful but talentless.”

She then went onto blame an unknown boss on the show, before ending the tweet with: “To be fair it lasted another 15 years. Which surprised us both.

“But thankfully it’s on its way out now.”

The Sun has contacted reps for Coronation Street for comment.

The actress has been very vocal about her time on Corrie
Rex

It’s not the first time Vicky has hit out at the show.

Last year the actress – who left the soap in 2011 – tweeted: “Everyone thinks it’s a soap opera but actually it’s a tightly gripped cult!!!

“My husband begged me to leave two years before.

“He hated the controlling environment. When I finally left we cried.”

Vicky added: “The freedom was electric.”

In 2022, Vicky furiously claimed she was retiring from acting after a series of unsuccessful auditions.

She said at the time: “Just had a few Zoom auditions. Half of me thinks I’m lucky.. the other half thinks.. any feed back cocky b******s!!”

In another post she said: “It’s just cost me £80 in petrol.

“Most of the time they don’t even acknowledge you even turned up!!

“The respect has flown from this industry! I gonna retire!”

Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025

ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap.

This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama.

Colson Smith – Craig Tinker

The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig’s on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role.

Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw

After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I’m A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she’s already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future.

Luca Toolan – Mason Radcliffe

Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him.

Sue Devaney – Debbie Webster

In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline.

Charlotte Jordan – Daisy Midgeley

The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she’s hungry to see what other opportunities await.

Shelley King – Yasmeen Metcalfe

The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.

Photo that’s outraged a nation as sick teens pose for SELFIE with weeping OAP woman, 92, they’d tied to bed and robbed

THIS is the selfie that has left an entire country in shock as sick teens posed next to a weeping 92-year-old woman after robbing her.

The masked trio took the twisted snap in front of a mirror while their distressed victim was seen hunched on her bed with her hands tied.

The twisted robbery took place in a neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina[/caption]

The horrifying moment, captured by the criminals themselves, was posted on social media like a trophy.

The crime took place in the early hours of January 17 in the Vicente Lopez neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The gang broke into the elderly woman’s home, gagged her, beat her, and tied her to her bed while they ransacked her house for cash and valuables, reports local outlet El Observador.

They stole wedding rings, a gold chain, an iPhone, and 50,000 pesos, which is around £45.

But before making their escape, they stopped to take a chilling memento — a selfie, with their terrified victim caught in the frame.

Hours later, they struck again in a different neighbourhood, targeting another woman.

This time, they took a 32-inch television before fleeing in a Volkswagen Gol Trend, the same car used in their first attack.

Their downfall came from the very photo they flaunted.

Investigators trawling through social media spotted the image, paired with a disturbing caption — “the spark, one gone” — alongside an electronic dance track.

“It is disgusting,” said one investigator, horrified by the criminals’ brazen display.

Through surveillance footage, witness testimonies, and social media analysis, police identified the gang.

Several raids were carried out in the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, leading to their capture.

Prosecutor Alejandro Guevara has requested preventive detention and a swift trial for the suspects — three minors and a 26-year-old adult.

All four have been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery.

Elsewhere in Paraguay, a “cradle snatcher” who posed as a nurse was caught on video fleeing from hospital with a stolen baby wrapped in her arms.

Natalia Edith González, 39, was arrested for allegedly nabbing the newborn from a hospital in Paraguay – and was just 50 metres from escaping over the Argentine border with it.

It’s believed she was on the hunt for an infant to steal after lying to her family – including her partner – about being pregnant, and identified a target after scouring three hospitals.

Her attempt to abduct the day-old baby was caught on CCTV inside the Barrio Obrero Public Hospital in the Paraguayan capital Asunción.

The suspect, an Argentine national, was reportedly posing as a nurse and wearing a face mask when the one-day-old baby was taken.
