A MUM has been found guilty of shaking her baby to death and refusing to stay by her bedside in hospital as she lay dying.
Melissa Wilband, 28, had denied killing four-month-old Lexi Wilband, who died from a bleed on the brain.

Lexi had suffered a bleed on the brain that was likely caused by someone ‘shaking her violently’Gloucestershire Constabulary
Bristol Crown Court was told the baby collapsed at home in Newent in the Forest of Dean and died six days later.
Lexi had suffered a bleed on the brain that was likely caused by someone “shaking her violently” on more than one occasion.
Wilband’s boyfriend at the time, Jack Wheeler, had also been charged with manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child. He was not Lexi’s biological father.
However, after both gave evidence in court, the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence for the manslaughter charge for 31-year-old Wheeler and the charge was removed.
A jury found him not guilty on Wednesday of a charge of causing or allowing the death of a child.
Wilband, meanwhile, was convicted of manslaughter.
The court heard Lexi was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital where Wilband claimed she was in her bouncer chair when she cried, went floppy then stopped breathing.
The baby was then transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital where the decision was made to switch off her life support.
Jane Osborne KC, prosecuting, said: “Ms Wilband knew that Lexi might die during the night but she didn’t stay by her bedside.
“A staff nurse held Lexi’s hand through the night and remained with her.
“On the morning of April 18, Lexi seemed to have longer pauses in her breathing. Ms Wilband was told to attend the ward.
“She arrived just after Lexi had ceased to show any signs of life and had stopped breathing.”
The court was told Wilband had told Wheeler, 31, throughout her pregnancy that he was Lexi’s biological dad.
But she had actually conceived the baby in early 2019 when she and Wheeler were not together.
Ms Osborne said: “When Melissa Wilband was still pregnant with Lexi, following some queries about the paternity, she presented a document which purported to be a paternity test.
“It declared that Jack Wheeler was the father of the unborn baby. This was obviously not a genuine document.
“The most obvious fact was the fact that the word ‘father’ was spelt ‘farther’ which would have been obvious to anybody who knew how to spell it properly.
“Looking at that document exacerbated concerns of Jack Wheeler and his parents. Very soon after Lexi was born, Jack Wheeler ensured that Melissa Wilband submitted samples for a proper test.
“The genuine test showed that he was not the father of Lexi. After the results of this, Mr Wheeler and Ms Wilband nearly split up but Ms Wilband persuaded Mr Wheeler that he should stay with her.”
Jurors heard Wheeler moved in with Wilband during the Covid lockdown in February 2020.
The couple, described as regular cocaine users, lived in squalor with every kitchen surface covered in food and utensils.
On April 12, 2020, Wilband phoned emergency crews, with paramedics finding Lexi unresponsive on the floor when they arrived.
While paramedics asked her questions, the mum rolled cigarettes and used her mobile.
When she was asked if she would like to hold her daughter before she was intubated, Wilband declined, the court heard.
In a prepared statement, Wheeler told police that Lexi “suddenly stopped crying and went floppy in his arms”.
A post-mortem gave Lexi’s cause of death as bleeding to the brain, caused by a non-accidental traumatic event such as someone “shaking her violently”.
Further tests found the areas of bleeding in Lexi’s eyes were “too numerous to count”, jurors heard.
Wilband was bailed by the court and is due to be sentenced on 22 May at Bristol Crown Court.

Sky SportsGary Neville claimed Jamie Carragher was ‘upset’ as he tried to get him in front of the cameras for Sky Sports[/caption]
Sky SportsCarragher stayed out of frame but still had a cheeky comeback for Neville[/caption]
GettyNeville was discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s proposed move to Real Madrid[/caption]
Former Manchester United hero Neville, 50, never shies away from the opportunity to poke fun at pal and fellow broadcaster Carragher, and he leapt at the chance to tease him about Alexander-Arnold’s proposed Real Madrid switch.
The England full-back is out of contract in the summer and looks set to call time on his spell with Liverpool after winning every major trophy on offer to him.
And Carragher, a former Liverpool player and fan, is understandably upset to see one of the Reds’ best players leave the club.
Speaking on the matter on Sky Sports, Neville beckoned Carragher over to the camera and said: “Go on get him over there. Here he is. Get him on.
“I understand that Liverpool fans are a little bit hurt about Trent, but I think if you’re outside of Liverpool, we’d have been the same at United, we got used to it.
“Liverpool fans got used to it all those years ago when Steve McManaman left, Micheal Owen left…
“So I think ultimately, this man here [Carragher] that’s just arrived, he’s a little bit upset about Trent Alexander-Arnold potentially going to Real Madrid. But it looks like it’s going to happen.”
However, Carragher was never going to let Neville get away with a little dig without having a pop himself.
The 47-year-old took a cheeky swipe at Neville’s coat to level the scores, saying: “I’m not as upset as he should be with that coat. Where did you get that? That is awful.”
Report have claimed that Alexander-Arnold has agreed personal terms with suitors Real on a bumper five-year contract.
It’s claimed Alexander-Arnold will pocket an annual salary worth £13million.
That breaks down to around £240k a week – a tasty rise on his weekly £180k at Liverpool.
He is also set to take home a lucrative signing-on fee.

JACK GREALISH fought back tears in an emotional tribute to his brother Keelan, who passed away 25 years ago.
Grealish, 29, scored his first Premier League goal since December 16, 2023 as Man City beat Leicester 2-0 on Wednesday night – scoring on a memorable date for the winger and his family.

AFPGrealish pointed to the sky after scoring his goal[/caption]
Birmingham-born Grealish couldn’t help but get emotional when talking to the media about his performance and what it meant to score it on such an important evening.
Choking up, he said: “I felt like I deserved to play tonight and I was just happy. It was a nice day because my little brother passed away 25 years ago today.
“So this day is always hard in the family. My mum and dad were here and I think this day is always difficult in the family so to score and to win is brilliant.”
Grealish also took to social media to pay tribute to Keelan, posting a picture of his celebration and one of his baby brother’s grave.
He wrote alongside the upload: “With me always, especially this day. That was for you Keelan”.
Keelan was just nine months old when he passed away from cot death when Jack was four.

Instagram @jackgrealishGrealish shared a photo of his brother’s grave[/caption]
It’s not the first time that Grealish has paid tribute to his brother, doing so when he scored his first senior goal while on loan at Notts County in the 2013-14 season.
He did the same in November 2018 while playing for Aston Villa – that time dedicating his goal in a 4-2 victory over Birmingham City to his sibling.
After that game, the three-time Premier League champion was targeted by a sick troll who taunted him about Keelan’s death.
The troll – Alfie Perkins – was later fined after being convicted of sending offensive communications.
Jack’s dad Kevin has previously spoken about the trauma of Keelan’s death too.
He said: “He was only nine months old, he was a little angel and I was devastated. We all were.
“Jack was only a kid himself back then, but he still remembers Keelan and he still thinks about him with everything he achieves.
“We still miss Keelan and still think about him – you never ever get over losing a child – but we are so grateful and lucky that we are blessed with Jack, his brother Kevan and his little sisters Holly and Kiera.”

PETER Andre’s wife has shared a rare glimpse of their youngest baby as the tot celebrates turning one years old.
Peter and his doctor wife Emily have remained private when it comes to revealing the identities of their children and details surrounding them but Emily shared a sneak peak at their youngest child, Arabella.
InstagramEmily Andre has shared a brand new snap of hers and Peter’s daughter Arabella[/caption]
InstagramArabella is one years old[/caption]
Emily took to Instagram today to pay tribute to her daughter on her very first birthday.
She uploaded a snap of a lavish birthday set-up for the tot who could be seen in front of it with her back to the camera to carefully conceal her face.
Emily wrote alongside the snap: “How is our baby 1 already?!@peterandre.
“Time, please slow down. From teeny tiny to full of personality — Happy Birthday to our very own Baby Belle.”
Peter and Emily got married in 2015 and have Amelia, nine, Theo, seven, and Arabella.
The Mysterious Girl singer is also dad to Junior, 19, and Princess, 17, from his previous marriage to Katie Price.
Despite being convinced they won’t have more children, Peter is yet to make up his mind about having a vasectomy in the future.
Admitting he was naive before reading up on it, Peter, 51, assumed the minor op changed the sound of a man’s voice.
He said on the Netmums podcast: “I then went and started asking people who’ve had it done, and they were like, ‘It’s horrific. It’s this, it’s that’.”
Pressed on whether or not he’d now go ahead and get it done, he continued: “Probably not now. Look, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve completely bottled it. It’s freaked me out.
“Then again, if it means that she doesn’t have to do anything to prevent it, I will do it.
“But it’s going to take some guts to do and I need to man up. I need to actually just go, you know what? Get over it and do it. But I’m just struggling a bit at the moment with the thought.”

After receiving treatment on the pitch, the centre-back shook his head as he limped off.
His wife Gabrielle attended a screening of Amazon Prime Video’s Married To The Game season two on Wednesday afternoon.
The show follows a selection of Premier League stars and their wives, including Gabriel’s Arsenal team-mate Jorginho.
While speaking to the Mail at the event, Gabrielle was asked about how it can be tricky for players’ families when they go through issues on the pitch.
She said: “It’s difficult. I think the perfect example is now, because he got injured yesterday.
“So that is why he’s not here with me today. He would love to be here. I would love to be here with him.
“Yesterday we got the news he got injured, and now he is with the doctor having scans.
“So this is the real life, and we never expected anything like this.”

On how she supports her man in times of adversity, Gabrielle added: “I think the only thing that we could do is being together and be the assurance for each other.
“That is the thing that I (will) do when I arrive home today. And yeah, it’s not easy, but we try our best to create this bond together every day, in every difficult moment.”
In addition to Gabriel, Arsenal also lost Jurrien Timber to injury during the victory over Fulham.

But despite their split, the couple, who share daughter Mila, nine, remain living together as they aren’t able to afford to move out.
A source said: “The split is reasonably amicable and they are putting co-parenting first, but who would want to live with their ex?
“They owe a lot of money after serious business difficulties and it seems that even when the house sale goes through they aren’t going to come out with all that much.”
They continued to tell MailOnline: “At that point they will try to fund two separate much smaller places to live going forward. It will be a huge downsize for them both.
“But for now they are having to carry on living together because they have to look after their finances really carefully. They simply can’t afford a different solution.”
The couple were living in a plush five-bedroom pad in Sywell, Northamptonshire, with their daughter Mila, with the house’s huge garden coming complete with a zipline.
The property, which was bought by the couple for £950,000 in 2016, was put up for sale last September after the pair admitted they were having trouble financially.
Just six months later, they’ve decided to call time on their relationship as they continue to sell some of their shared assets.
According to DailyMail, the pair have now successfully found a buyer for their home.
It’s believed the pair are over £1million in debt in their businesses, with Kristina previously explaining the pair had “invested everything we’ve ever had” into their company Soo Yoga Group.
Their businesses have not filed their finances for the past four years.
BEN COHEN AND KRISTINA RHIANOFF'S ROCKY RELATIONSHIP
The couple had met when they were partnered for the 11th series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2013, and fell in love.
This was despite Cohen being married at the time to Abby Bray.
Cohen and Rihanoff share daughter Mila, and had planned to tie the knot in Tuscany or Oxfordshire.
He told Hello! Magazine in 2023: “Over the last nine years we’ve been through the wringer.
“To support each other through difficult times in business is the ultimate test in a relationship.
“I’ve watched her flourish, from her becoming a mum to growing as a businesswoman, and it has strengthened our bond.”
The pair previously revealed they got engaged during a sun-soaked Maldives getaway in 2022.
The extent of their financial woes became public knowledge last September, when Kristina was hauled into court for driving without insurance.
During the appearance, Ben took to the stand and blamed her lack of insurance as human error on his part – and admitted they were both crippled with debts from their multiple businesses.

FOOD factory workers are fearing for their jobs after a £1.2billion merger between two ready-meal giants.
Greencore, the UK’s biggest maker of sandwiches, yesterday struck terms for a merger with Bakkavor the maker of hummus dips, pizzas and desserts.
GreencoreGreencore, the UK’s biggest maker of sandwiches, yesterday struck terms for a merger with Bakkavor[/caption]
The deal will create a food colossus with £4billion of revenues from selling salads, sushi, soups, quiches and meals to almost all our supermarkets.
Shares in Bakkavor jumped by 7.87 per cent to 191.8p while Greencore’s shares also edged up by 0.90 per cent to 180.20p.
The takeover of Bakkavor will result in a £600million payday for the “Bakka brothers” — the nickname for Lýdur and Ágúst Gudmundsson, who had run the business until three years ago.
But workers have been put on notice that the deal will result in cost-cutting after the companies said they believed there “is potential for substantial synergies resulting from a combination”.
Eamon O’Hearn, GMB union national officer, said: “GMB is calling for a commitment to no factory closures and no job losses.” Bakkavor already has tense labour relations — and strikes lasted six months at its factory in Spalding, Lincs, before a deal on pay last month.
Greencore employs 13,300 people while Bakkavor employs 17,200 and both firms face significantly higher staffing costs as a result of the Budget’s changes to employers’ NI contributions.
The deal will undoubtedly trigger an investigation from the Competition and Markets Authority because Greencore and Bakkavor have overlapping businesses and a shared customer base.
It will be one of the first merger tests for the competition watchdog since it was given an explicit growth mission by the Government.
There are concerns the new firms could push up prices.
CAUGHT SHORTBREAD
WALKER’S SHORTBREAD has said US tariffs will be “devastating” for the 127-year-old biscuit maker.
GettyWalker’s Shortbread has said US tariffs will be ‘devastating’[/caption]
Nicky Walker — from the fourth generation to head the family-owned firm — said they would have to “hope for the best” if slapped with 20 per cent levies.
He told us that the Highlands-based company had strategically grown its hefty export business to America in recent years.
The US is now worth more than a quarter of its revenues, at some £38million.
Mr Walker added: “We don’t have the option of moving our manufacturing out of Scotland.
“The provenance of our product is paramount, and we’re proud to be made in Scotland — our tartan packaging screams Scotland.
“We can’t just go and start making shortbread in other countries to avoid tariffs.”
There are hopes that Trump’s late mother being Scottish might help in trade negotiations, but Mr Walker admits it is a “long shot”.
PI PROFIT IS SLICED BY HALF
LOW-cost computer maker Raspberry PI has posted a halving in profits in its first year of being a listed company.
The firm, held up as a rare British success story, blamed the slide in profits on a hangover from pandemic- related shortages and said it had overcome supply issues.

Pre-tax profits fell 57 per cent to £12.6million, but its adjusted earnings of £28.8million were £500,000 ahead of what analysts had predicted.
Sales edged 2 per cent down to £201million this year.
The Cambridge-based firm, whose products are meant to teach coding to kids, said it had faced £12.2million in extra costs associated with its listing last year.
Boss Eben Upton said that its £542million listing had “undoubtedly extended awareness of Raspberry Pi’s value proposition” and had led to “promising” discussions with equipment manufacturers.
TESLA HIT THE SKIDS
TESLA has suffered its worst slump in sales in three years as it faces a consumer backlash in Europe due to Elon Musk’s links to the Trump regime.
Vehicle sales fell by 13 per cent in the last quarter, while in Europe registrations tumbled by 43 per cent.
It also faces stiff competition from Chinese rival BYD.
However, analysts said the slump was also due to Tesla factories being impacted by a delayed launch of its revamped Model Y car.
SHELL TO DRIVE ON DIVERSITY
SHELL might have reacted to Donald Trump’s anti-woke agenda by watering down green targets but it is one of a few corporate beasts to still embrace diversity policies.
Trump’s elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion policies (DEI) has caused companies ranging from Accenture to Goldman Sachs, Disney, Pepsi, Coca Cola, Boeing And Molson Coors to swiftly abandon or “sunset” diversity targets.
GettyShell is one of a few corporate beasts to still embrace diversity policies[/caption]
The Trump administration has warned suppliers and recipients of any government funds that they must comply with a ban on DEI programmes or risk losing payments.
Many global firms have also deleted web pages referring to their DEI programmes.
However, The Sun’s analysis shows Shell still includes targets in its annual report while its boss, Wael Sawan, is still quoted saying “creating the most diverse and inclusive organisation in the world will make us a better company and is going to be a competitive differentiator for us in the energy transition”.
BP, which is leaning into Trump’s “drill baby drill” agenda and followed Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, is still sticking by its DEI programmes.
BP’s boss, Murray Auchincloss, had previously been the oil giant’s “race and ethnicity champion” in the UK.
Both have huge operations in the US.
MARKET END OF THE PIER
THE leisure group behind the 126-year-old Brighton Palace Pier has become the latest firm to quit London’s junior stock market. Brighton Pier Group – which also owns a number of bars and mini-golf venues – said it is planning to cancel its listing on London’s Aim market, sending shares slumping by nearly 60 per cent.
The firm, chaired by former chairman of Pizza Express and Patisserie Valerie Luke Johnson, said the decision follows a “review of the benefits and drawbacks” of its stock market listing.
It marks the latest blow to the Aim market after model train firm Hornby revealed plans last month to go private, blaming regulatory hurdles and costs involved.
