How ultimate ‘it girl’ Marianne Faithfull’s life was shaped by relationship with Mick Jagger and decade of darkness

MARIANNE FAITHFULL was the Sixties pin-up who was so much more than a pretty face.

Her death at 78 yesterday marked the passing of one of Britain’s most intriguing and accomplished singers — the ultimate “it girl”, the rock star muse who became Mick Jagger’s lover for four years, the leather-clad Girl On A Motorcycle.

Last night Mick tweeted his condolences: “I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull.

“She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”

And fellow Rolling Stone Keith Richards — who also had a fling with her — posted a message with a picture of him and Marianne: “My heartfelt condolences to Marianne’s family! I’m so sad and will miss her!! Love, Keith.”

Her career fell into two distinct parts — before and after her life-changing troubles.

These included heroin addiction, anorexia, severe laryngitis and homelessness.

Yet she emerged from a decade of darkness at the end of the Seventies with strikingly original music — an evocative, lived-in rasp replacing the sweet, clear vocals present on her Sixties hits.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” said her representative last night.

“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”

Marianne Evelyn Gabriel Faithfull was born in Hampstead, North London, on December 29, 1946, little more than a year after the Second World War.

Her mother Eva was a Hungarian, half-Jewish baroness and former ballet dancer who had fled the Nazis.

Her father was a notably colourful character — Major Robert Glynn Faithfull, a one-time MI6 agent who eventually settled on a career as a professor of Italian literature.

Perhaps her free spirit came from her childhood at a country house called Braziers Park, in Oxfordshire, which her father turned into a commune where promiscuity reigned.

Representative

Marianne’s mother took her away, moving her into a terraced house in Reading and sending her to St Joseph’s Roman Catholic boarding school.

It was during this time that teenage Marianne started eschewing her studies in favour of pursuing a singing career.

She began by singing a cappella in the coffee houses of Reading — not exactly New York’s Greenwich Village scene populated by the likes of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, but it was a start.

Her big break came in 1964 when she attended a Rolling Stones party and, because of her enchanting looks, was spotted by the band’s producer Andrew Loog Oldham.

She was still just 17 when she released her haunting debut single As Tears Go By, co-written by future boyfriend Mick Jagger with his songwriting partner Keith Richards.

The wistful ballad was one of the first things ever written by the two Stones but they thought it not suitable for their swaggering rock. So Oldham handed it to the girl with the long blonde hair.

She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered

Mick Jagger

This was the sweet, innocent-sounding Marianne, whose voice betrayed an endearing fragility, who was to release a string of captivating singles and albums. Her best-loved songs at the time were Come Stay With Me, This Little Bird, Summer Nights and a cover of The Beatles’ Yesterday.

And though she turned Bob Dylan down when he came to London in 1965, she began a high-profile four-year relationship with Jagger in 1966.

Marianne later admitted she had slept with three members of the Stones — Mick, Keith and guitarist Brian Jones — but decided that “the singer was the best bet”.

Free spirit

It is said, though not confirmed, that the Stones songs You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Wild Horses both had her in mind.

And one of the band’s most famous songs, Sympathy For The Devil, was inspired by a Russian novel called The Master And Margarita, introduced to Mick by Marianne.

As a pair, they epitomised the Swinging Sixties and attracted huge interest in the media, including lurid headlines.

When police raided Redlands, Keith’s house in deepest Sussex, Marianne was discovered naked except for a fur rug which barely covered her modesty.

It was after this that she was accused of a sex act involving a Mars bar but she strongly denied that any such thing happened.

Like so many in the limelight during that era, drugs took a grip on Marianne.

It was documented in the song she co-wrote with Jagger and Richards, Sister Morphine, a scary, narcotic haze set to music, on the Stones’ 1971 album Sticky Fingers.

By then, her relationship with Jagger had disintegrated and her pop career had hit the buffers.

But she will also be remembered for her acting roles. In 1967 she took to the stage at London’s Royal Court opposite Glenda Jackson in the Chekov play Three Sisters.

She is credited with being the first person to say “f***” in a mainstream film, in 1967’s I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname.

But by far her most famous screen role has to be her sexually overt portrayal of The Girl On A Motorcycle in 1968, noted for being America’s first X-rated film.

What was really remarkable about Marianne was how far down she spiralled in the Seventies. She lost custody of her son and she went into a coma after a suicide attempt. But her fighting spirit was more than evident on her 1979 album Broken English, and its signature song The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan.

She followed with another strong outing, 1981’s Dangerous Acquaintances, which ended with the searing Truth, Bitter Truth. She went on to make an acclaimed long-lasting second chapter of her music career, drawing on jazz and blues in particular.

Her final album was the 2021 experimental collaboration with Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds’ Australian multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, called She Walks In Beauty.

She made a full recovery from breast cancer in 2006 and said afterwards: “It has been an extraordinary experience and, in many ways, extremely positive.

“I didn’t realise how many true friends I had. I feel so lucky and loved and thank everybody for all their good thoughts.”

In April 2020, she spent three weeks in hospital with Covid and emerged quite frail — but with her spirit undimmed to the end.

Lidl’s sell-out winter gadget to avoid putting the heating on is returning to shelves TODAY and costs just 3p to run

A POPULAR gadget that keeps you warm without having to crank up the heating is back on shelves at Lidl.

The cosy buy is just £39.99 and costs just pennies to run so could help you keep on top of energy costs.

Box of Silentnight luxury faux fur heated throw (160 x 130cm).

Silentnight’s Luxury Faux Fur Heated Throw is available in Lidl’s Middle Aisle from today.

It heats up in minutes and comes with nine heat settings ranging from moderate warmth (2-5) to “ultimate cosiness” (5-8), along with a pre-heat option.

Measuring 160cm by 130cm, the throw has an automatic switch off after two hours with the option of setting the shut off time yourself.

The throw has received five-star reviews on the Silentnight website, with shoppers branding it “fab”, “perfect on chilly evenings” and “soft and cosy”.

It’s also machine washable and comes with a one year warranty should something go wrong.

In previous year’s the gadget has been a sell-out, with shoppers eager to find ways to stay warm that won’t break the bank.

Putting the heating on means you’re warming up the whole house and you could be paying to heat unused rooms unnecessarily.

Warming up yourself instead of your home – a method made popular by Martin Lewis – is one way to reduce energy bills.

Under the current price cap it costs around £1.50 an hour to have the heating on, though this can vary according to the boiler you have and what energy tariff you’re on.

With 120W power, the throw costs just 3p an hour to run.

But remember if you’re elderly, ill or vulnerable and worried about energy bills there’ s help available (see below) and you should never go without heating.

Silentnight’s luxury faux fur throw typically sells for £75 or more, from the brand’s website and shops such as Curry’s and Argos.

That means you’re saving at least £35, though it’s always worth shopping around and comparing prices to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

You can do that using tools like PriceSpy, Idealo and Google Shopping.

The £39.99 price tag is also only for those who have the Lidl Plus loyalty app. Without it you’ll pay £44.99.

What energy bill help is available?

There's a number of different ways to get help paying your energy bills if you're struggling to get by.

If you fall into debt, you can always approach your supplier to see if they can put you on a repayment plan before putting you on a prepayment meter.

This involves paying off what you owe in instalments over a set period.

If your supplier offers you a repayment plan you don’t think you can afford, speak to them again to see if you can negotiate a better deal.

Several energy firms have schemes available to customers struggling to cover their bills.

But eligibility criteria vary depending on the supplier and the amount you can get depends on your financial circumstances.

For example, British Gas or Scottish Gas customers struggling to pay their energy bills can get grants worth up to £2,000.

British Gas also offers help via its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund.

You don’t need to be a British Gas customer to apply for the second fund.

EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy and Scottish Power all offer grants to struggling customers too.

Thousands of vulnerable households are missing out on extra help and protections by not signing up to the Priority Services Register (PSR).

The service helps support vulnerable households, such as those who are elderly or ill.

Some of the perks include being given advance warning of blackouts, free gas safety checks and extra support if you’re struggling.

Get in touch with your energy firm to see if you can apply.

You can download the app for free on Apple and Google’s app stores, depending in the phone you have.

You don’t earn points like other loyalty cards, but it gives you access to cheaper prices on some items as well as offers at your local store.

Lidl Plus also gives shoppers freebies after spending a certain amount.

For instance when you spend £10 you”ll get a voucher in the app to get a free bakery item.

As the energy-saving gadget is one of Lidl’s Middle Aisle deals you’ll need to be quick.

These deals, which land every Thursday and Sunday, are only available in limited quantities and when stock is gone, it’s gone.

You can find out what Middle Aisle deals are coming in to store via Lidl leaflets in store, or digital versions on the website or app.

‘That looks serious’ – Tottenham star Dragusin forced off injured in yet another blow leaving TNT Sports pundit worried

TOTTENHAM suffered yet another injury blow as Radu Dragusin was forced off.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has vented his frustration with recent squad setbacks ahead of IF Elfsborg’s Europa League trip.

He planned to take off centre-back Micky van de Ven at half-time against to ensure he keeps his backline fresh.

But it was replacement Dragusin who picked up a knee injury when the defender went down off the ball after a tussle with striker Jalal Abdullai.

He was taken off – replaced by forward Dane Scarlett – as replays revealed Dragusin coming down on his knee awkwardly.

TNT Sports’ Glenn Hoddle: “That looks quite serious because look, he plays the ball there and then he’s landed and wow, he holds his knee.”

Spurs have NINE first-team players sidelined through injury, including defenders Djed Spence, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie.

Keeper Guglielmo Vicario, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison are also out.

Postecoglou – who has blamed Tottenham’s woeful league form on injuries – did make light of Dragusin’s knock.

The outspoken Aussie pretended to pull his hamstring when stretching for a ball that went out of play.

Spurs cruised into the last 16 of the Europa League thanks to goals in the final 20 minutes from Scarlett, Oyindamola Ajayi and Mikey Moore.

And on Dragusin’s injury, he said: “It is too early to say what it is, we will need to investigate further.

“But it was his knee which is not good.

“We have another game on Sunday. The club will be working hard behind the scenes to see if we can get something done.”

Ekin-Su accused of ‘fake meltdown’ on Love Island All Stars as fans spot ‘crocodile tears’ and say ‘Davide was right!’

EKIN-SU left Love Island viewers stunned tonight when she wailed over Curtis during an epic meltdown – but didn’t produce any tears.

Viewers shared memes on X of her first time in the Love Island villa, when Davide branded her “a liar and an actress!” in now infamous scenes.

Davide famously accused Ekin-Su of being ‘a liar, actress!’ in her first villa apperance

Tonight, tensions flared when Curtis told Ekin-Su he didn’t want to talk his night in the Hideaway with bombshell Danielle.

Ekin-Su insisted they hash it out and said she already knew what he was going to say: that their relationship was over.

Curtis then accused her of not being authentic, a comment that left Ekin-Su furious.

But it seems that viewers agreed with him, after she appeared to break down in tears to Ronnie and later to her pal Luca.

One said: “Ekin Su now, crying without tears” as another swiped: “fake crying without tears man. Davide was right all along!”

Another said: “Oh please Ekin was “crying” yet not a single tear was seen”

In bizarre scenes, the pair eventually opened up about wanting to speak to their parents for support before unexpectedly kissing and making up.

The emotional roller coaster left islanders stunned, with Casey even jokingly taking a picture, calling it a “random, weird 10 minutes” and saying it was “one for the memories.”

But while some viewers sympathised with Ekin-Su, others weren’t convinced, with some accusing her of using her acting skills for dramatic effect.

Ekin-Su and Davide were one of the most high-profile couples to have appeared on Love Island.

Ekin-Su first entered the villa in 2022, as a bombshell during Love Island season eight.

She began a romance with Davide, but they quickly ran into problems when she secretly kissed Jay Younger.

Davide famously accused his partner of being a “liar” and an “actress”.

But the pair managed to make it to the end of the show and WIN.

They decided to call it quits in 2023 with Ekin-Su accusing him of cheating, before they briefly reconciled.

They broke up again, for the final time, in January 2024 with Ekin-Su announcing the news on Instagram.
