Marcus Rashford COMPLETES shock Aston Villa loan with view to permanent transfer to end Man Utd hell

MARCUS RASHFORD has completed his loan to Aston Villa until the end of the season.

The Manchester United forward, 27, agreed the temporary switch after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

But Villa will have the option to BUY the Red Devils academy graduate come the end of the season.

It’s understood they will have to shell out a cool £40million should they wish to permanently acquire his services.

Villa’s deal to bring Rashford to the Midlands has seen them take on a major financial outlay.

The Villans are understood to be paying the majority of Rashford’s whopping £325,000-a-week wages – which he’s unlikely to get should he permanently move to Villa park in the summer.

Despite three goals in Amorim’s manager’s first two Premier League games, Rashford has not featured for his boyhood club since December 12.

A public bashing from Amorim has included the Portuguese chief saying he would rather put his 63- year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vita on the pitch instead of “a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day”.

Now, though, Rashford has sealed his short-term escape out of Old Trafford.

The loan switch comes after Aston Villa sold Jhon Duran to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr for £64million.

Rashford is keen to get his career back on track after a difficult few years under both Erik ten Hag and now Amorim.

And the chance to play in the Champions League again will undoubtedly appeal.

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Monaco and AC Milan were all linked with the United academy graduate – although his mammoth £325,000-a-week wages proved an issue.

But now Rashford is staying put in the Premier League at Villa after the two clubs thrashed out a deal.

After the blistering start, Rashford and the manager’s relationship soured when Amorim was told the striker had been out on a Friday night – less than 48 hours before the Everton game.

He called the forward in for a meeting where Rashford denied the allegations – and they have not patched up their differences.

Rashford then angered Amorim further by publicly revealing he is “ready for a new challenge” away from Old Trafford.

The player reckons he has received unfair treatment – and there are thoughts there may have been orders from the top.

A source told The Sun: “Marcus thinks Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants him out of the club and has basically told head coach Ruben Amorim to get him out.

“He might just have met his match with Sir Jim.

“Marcus feels like he is being picked on.

“In the early days of training under Amorim, he was trying to learn new systems and other players were also struggling — but he was the one who was getting more vocal criticism.

“He knows he needs to leave but he’s shocked that no big team has pulled out all the stops to get him.

“There’s been interest but financially it’s a complicated deal and that’s put quite a few teams off.

Marcus Rashford's Manchester United 2024-25 season statistics.

“Marcus has been left bewildered by how quickly his relationship with Amorim has disintegrated.”

Ex-United stars Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes all weighed in on the Rashford debate before his loan was confirmed.

Ferdinand suggested the player could look to sue Amorim for his comments while Rooney and Scholes both laid into the forward.

Rooney said: “I went into Carrington on Sunday to take my kids to game day and Marcus Rashford was out on the training pitch with the fitness coach.

“But he was right over towards where the parents were walking past for the kids’ games.

“I looked at him thinking how embarrassing it must be for him as parents walked past. He’s there and all the parents are walking past him.

Marcus has let a lot of people down with his attitude… the sooner he’s gone, the better

Paul Scholes

“I was surprised when this started over two years ago, but now I’m not.

“I’ve spoken to Marcus a couple of times and I’ve given him my thoughts and feelings that he needs to leave the football club.

“Because whatever is going on in his life and at Manchester United, he’s not the same.

“For him to have a fresh start, he needs to leave the club.”

Scholes added: “I think Marcus has let a lot of people down with his attitude and I think that’s what the manager is trying to say.

“You think of the young players coming through the team and think of [Alejandro] Garnacho.

“They’re looking up to people like Marcus now and he’s 27, he’s clearly not training properly, he’s not living his life properly. They’re the examples these people should look at.

“In a way, he’s saying he doesn’t want to be involved with the team and the fact of letting his teammates down, he should be banished from the dressing room.

“If he’s in and around that and young people are seeing that as an example, the sooner he’s gone the better.”

Brit, 18, killed by Russian drone minutes into first mission on Ukraine frontline as pal says ‘he didn’t stand a chance’

BRITISH teen volunteer James Wilton “did not stand a chance” when he was killed by a Russian drone while fighting in Ukraine, his best pal said.

The 18-year-old rookie recruit died after being chased by three of the killing machines — having never had any military training.

He had flown from Manchester Airport just four months earlier aged just 17 to join the resistance against the Russian invasion but was killed in an explosion minutes into his first mission.

James’s dad Graham told The Sun yesterday: “I’ll never get over this. I didn’t want him to go but his heart was set on it. He wanted to help Ukraine.

“I’ve been told bits of the story of how he died, but have struggled to deal with it and wish we could have swapped places because he had his whole life in front of him.

“Then he could have been back home with a pint, watching the darts on telly instead of me.”

Best pal Jason — a US volunteer fighter who was with James when he died and later lost his left foot in battle — told The Sun: “It was James’s first and last mission.

“We had to cross an open field with no trees, no cover, nothing, to resupply other soldiers.

“I was team leader and there were six of us traversing in groups of two, 20 metres apart. Myself and James were the last two.

“I was the last man in the group. I was telling him to stay 20 metres ahead of me. I could see he was scared and I was scared too, but I told him he was going to be OK.

“We had heavy, 60 kilo packs. When we reached halfway across the field he suddenly stopped.

“I shouted after him ‘Why are you stopping, what are you doing?’ and he didn’t respond.

“Then I heard it — a buzz in the air above us — and thought: ‘Oh f***.’ It took me two or three seconds to spot it, then I saw it and realised we were in the worst possible situation we could be in — in an open field with nowhere to run. “

I screamed at him: ‘We need to move, we need to move!’ Then the drone moved and began hovering 20 metres above me.

“I could tell it was a ‘drop drone’ armed with a bomb and its pilot was trying to decide who to kill — me or James.

“He wanted us closer together so he could kill both of us with one bomb. Then another drone appeared. I told him I was going to start shooting then he turned and said: ‘I’m going to run.’

“We both started sprinting with two drones on top of us — then a third one appeared.

“Once the drone was on him, James never stood a chance.

“He was only about 30 metres from the trench line when I saw the drone explode.

“As I bent down to grab him, one of the other drones appeared ten metres above my head and I closed my eyes and thought: ‘Oh s***! Now I’m going to die.’”

“I felt a calm moment when I resigned myself to it and held on to my friend waiting for it to happen.

I think he had thought to himself ‘I’m not doing much with my life, I want to do something bigger for the greater good.’ I still miss him and I’ll never forget him

Jason

“But after five seconds it just zipped away and left me there — I still have no idea why.”

Medic Jason was living and working in London as a medical translator before volunteering for Ukraine’s 2nd International Legion.

He braved the drone menace again 20 minutes later to retrieve James’s body.

THE SUN SAYS: RED ALERT

THE war in Ukraine is once again reaching a dangerous tipping point with claims that a Russian victory could come in less than six months.

Grief at the death of 18-year-old Brit fighter James Wilton is shared by the families of at least 43,000 Ukrainian fallen soldiers.

The West cannot afford to let Vladimir Putin win – and send a message to the world’s dictators that they can easily do the same.

He said: “I’ve seen people die out here. I’ve killed two Russian soldiers myself, but nothing prepares you for losing someone who’s close to you.

“I knew James was going to be a lifelong friend and that one day we’d laugh about old war stories over a pint in a pub back home.

“But now he’s gone and will only ever be a memory.”

James, from Huddersfield, West Yorks, was cremated in Ukraine following his death on the eastern front on July 23 last year.

His death has gone unreported until now. He is feared to be among more British volunteers whose sacrifice has gone “under the radar” during the Ukraine War.

James’s dad, a trade counter assistant at a flooring company, travelled from England to the funeral and met Jason, along with his son’s foreign fighter comrades from all over the world.

Jason is currently recovering at Lviv’s Superhumans Centre in Ukraine — a charity-funded specialist centre rehabilitating amputees and war wounded.

After witnessing James’s death, he fought on and managed to evacuate three more wounded men, who all survived.

But he stepped on a landmine and lost his left foot below the knee four days later.

Jason said: “I extracted my friend James from the battle and he died. It’s hard not getting emotional about it, but seeing that made me want to try harder to help others.

“He was the youngest in our group and we all felt protective towards him and I suppose I came to see him like a little brother.

“I think he had thought to himself ‘I’m not doing much with my life, I want to do something bigger for the greater good.’ I still miss him and I’ll never forget him.”

He was the youngest in our group and we all felt protective towards him and I suppose I came to see him like a little brother

Jason

James had decided to take time out after finishing a two-year course in animal welfare and land care. He had two sisters, Sophie, 22, Sarah, 21.

Dad Graham split in 2009 from James’s mum Kerrie-Anne, 44, who tried in vain to talk her son out of travelling to the war zone.

Graham said: “He met his mum for an hour to say goodbye, then I drove him to Manchester Airport for the flight to Poland and he travelled overland to Ukraine.

“He was such a laid back, polite, easy-going and likeable young man — I’ll always be proud of him. I brought his ashes back home, but might go back to scatter them there. I think that might be what he would have wanted.

“It’s taken a while to process James’s death. But I think it’s time that some kind of public tribute was paid and it’s good to be finally talking about what happened.”

It comes as Vladimir Putin’s forces continue to make gains along the 600-mile eastern front, despite huge Russian casualty figures.

And experts warn Moscow could win within six months as Putin sacrifices even greater numbers of troops to gain his objectives.

DON MUST STEP IN

By Nick Parker, Foreign Editor

DURING his election campaign, US President Donald Trump repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours”.

On the day of his inauguration, he quipped: “I still have half a day left” when asked whether he would deliver on his impossible promise.

Two weeks later that joke is wearing thin in Ukraine as Vladmir Putin’s ruthless “meat grinder” war machine continues to gobble up stolen territory.

Brave young Ukrainians and foreign fighter comrades — like British teenager James Wilton — are falling every day in battle as Putin sacrifices many more of his own men to grab ground.

But Mr Trump yesterday appeared more focused on the US’s threatened trade wars and tariffs than forcing Mad Vlad to the table.

But for Ukrainians it is clear the war cannot end soon enough.

I hope for their sake — and ours — that Mr Trump makes good on his peace pledge as soon as possible.

Seven Championship stars to watch on transfer deadline day – from Jobe Bellingham to £50m-rated international star

SO it’s that time again — a kind of Supermarket Sweep with clubs keen to complete transfers before the deadline.

And there is a lot of talent around the EFL up for potential moves on deadline day.

Jobe Bellingham is one star being tipped for a big money transfer[/caption]

WILFRIED GNONTO (Leeds)

All eyes will be on Elland Road to see if the talented midfielder finally makes a move.

The Italian, 21 — who has five goals and five assists so far this term — has gone off the boil recently, falling behind Dan James and Manor Solomon in the  pecking order.

Gnonto has not started a game since December 29, though he did score when he came on as a sub in Saturday’s 7-0 mauling of Cardiff.

A number of Saudi Pro League sides are in the marketplace to prise him away, but Leeds will be wanting at least £50million.

Wilfried Gnonto's 2024-25 Leeds United Championship season statistics.

BORJA SAINZ (Norwich)

Spanish winger, 23, is one of the Championship’s standout players.

The attacker leads the top- scoring charts with 15 — no mean feat in a Canaries team that is hardly setting the world alight.

His pace is electric and often takes him behind the full-backs. He has scored some great goals this term — three or four of them goal-of-the-season candidates.

Added to this, he has fine touch and balance, and scouts have been flocking to Championship grounds to check him out.

Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are among his suitors.

But Norwich are reluctant to sell this month and Sainz’s six-match ban for spitting, plus his current eight-game goal drought, have put off a few clubs.

Borja Sainz's 2024-25 Norwich City Championship stats: games, chances created, goals, assists, shots on target, passes, and fouls.

JOBE BELLINGHAM (Sunderland)

Since Regis Le Bris took over as manager, this versatile player has developed into a quality all-round midfielder.

Last season he played as a striker, a false nine, a No 10 and even dropped back as a defensive midfielder.

It is hard to imagine he is only 19 years old yet on Monday he could make his 100th senior appearance.

The physical youngster effortlessly glides past opponents and — like his older brother Jude — has great composure belying his years.

He times his bursts into the danger zone well and can score.

Birmingham allowed him to leave for just £1.5m.

Although it is unlikely he will leave the Black Cats, Manchester United, Arsenal and Crystal Palace are among those checking him out.

He would cost about £25m.

Jobe Bellingham's 2024-25 Sunderland AFC stats.

FINN AZAZ (Middlesbrough)

It would be gobsmacking if this attacking midfielder is still in the Championship next season, whether or not Boro go up.

The technically gifted Irish star, 24, displays impressive artistry in the centre of the park.

He is the assists king in the second tier with nine so far this campaign — plus he has eight goals to his name, too.

Finn Azaz's 2024-25 Middlesbrough Championship stats.

EMMANUEL LATTE LATH (M’Boro)

MLS side Atlanta are hoping to wrap up a £23m deal for the striker today.

Boro boss Michael Carrick has already brought in Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth as his replacement and it looks unlikely the Ivorian will still be at the Riverside tomorrow morning.

Latte Lath, 26, is everything you want from a frontman. He can score all types of goals and is two-footed.

Also, his pace can stretch any backline, he is well equipped to compete with centre-halves and is decent in the air.

Emmanuel Latte Lath's Middlesbrough FC 2024-25 season statistics.

GIORGI CHAKVETADZE (Watford)

The Georgian attacking midfielder is a huge favourite at Vicarage Road. He can play with both feet and is an outstanding dribbler.

Operating as a left-sided No 10, he is one of the best creative footballers in the Championship.

The Hornets tied down the 25-year-old to a new five-year, £25,000-a-week deal only last September.

But that has not stopped Everton, Leicester and Wolves from expressing their interest, and a bid of about £20m might be enough to prise him away.

Watford hope their promotion bid will be enough to keep him until at least the summer.

Giorgi Chakvetadze's 2024-25 Watford stats: games, chances created, passes, goals, assists, tackles, and fouls.

ALFIE DOUGHTY (Luton)

Although the Hatters have had a shocking return to life in the Championship, the left-back, 25, was their standout player before he injured a ligament in November — head and shoulders out-performing his team-mates.

He did well for Luton in the Premier League, has a great left foot and loves getting forward.

Doughty has recently returned to the side and scored in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

But potential suitors will likely wait until the summer before coming in for him.

Host Jeremy Clarkson said he was left stunned by Anton’s error[/caption]

However, his journey was cut short after an unfortunate blunder on a seemingly easy musical question.

Anton was asked: “Which Tony Award-winning musical features a mash-up called ‘Elephant Love Medley’?”

Despite his experience in the entertainment industry, Anton answered The Book of Mormon – but the correct answer was Moulin Rouge.

The error meant he left with just £1,000 for his chosen charity, The Sick Children’s Trust.

Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their frustration, with one writing: “The audience are absolute FOOLS and so is anton du beke . surely this is his wheelhouse ???”

Another added: “That mishap means Anton is only taking £1k for his charity, The Sick Children’s Trust. Ouch.”

Someone else said: “OH WHAT THE HELL?? Anton, that was quite a costly error.”

Host Jeremy Clarkson recently told the The Mirror he had been left stunned by Anton’s error too.

He said: “When that cropped up, I thought well ‘this was tailor made for you’ and then it wasn’t. It’s a bit like me not knowing a Nico Rosberg question.”

Anton wasn’t the only star playing for charity on the night.

First Dates maître d’ Fred Sirieix walked away with an impressive £64,000 for The Right Course, while Emmerdale actress Roxy Shahidi secured £16,000 for The Maggie Oliver Foundation.

The evening’s winnings totaled £81,000, bringing the series total so far to £355,000 raised for charity.

Jeremy admitted last week that the most nervous celeb on the current series is boxing champ and former I’m A Celebrity campmate Tony Bellew.

Speaking of Tony, he said: “I am not quite sure what emotion was going through him – nerves, rage, disappointment, acting, as I think he is a lot cleverer than he lets on.

“At one stage, he was having a class war with himself with the word ‘hobnob’.”

Other stars who will be seen across the show’s run include former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh, BBC Breakfast host Louise Minchin, Dion Dublin, Steph McGovern and ITV News host Lucrezia Millirini.

Driver crashes into family home leaving gaping hole at SAME spot where another car smashed into wall just months earlier

A DRIVER has crashed into a family home in the exact spot where another car smashed into the wall just months before.

Emergency services were called to Tideswell Road in Eastbourne at 3.30pm on Saturday, following reports of the collision.

The property, located opposite The Beacon shopping centre car park, was still boarded up from the first time it had been struck.

In an almost identical crash to one in August 2024, the black Toyota SUV hurled head-on into the wall.

South East Coast Ambulance services said one passenger was given first aid but no one was taken to hospital.

They left the scene at 5.50pm.

Last summer, residents were left “without a home or belongings” when a similar incident occurred.

Kacper and Pamela told the BBC at the time they were watching TV in their ground floor flat when a car smashed through their wall.

The vehicle had plunged so deep inside the property, only its rear end could be seen from the street.

The couple and driver were taken to hospital but only sustained minor injuries.

According to one concerned resident, the property had even been hit several times before that.

“We don’t know if the [building] is going to collapse,” she said.

The cops closed the road whilst they tried to remove the vehicle.

Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance services have been contacted for comment.

Think the Tories were split over Europe? If Starmer’s EU trip goes wrong he’ll be on menu when he gets home

AS Sir Keir Starmer sits in his crisp, white leather plane seat this morning and stares out over the Channel, he should remember his predecessors.

Barely reaching cruising altitude on the 45-minute hop to Brussels, he follows a long line of UK Prime Ministers who have made that journey to be told “non, nein, no” by so- called friends in Europe while ministers back home bicker.

Illustration of four caricatured politicians on a map with red arrows.

There are growing tensions in Starmer’s already bruised Government as he seeks his so-called EU ‘reset’[/caption]

Although the last decade could have fooled anyone, Cabinet splits over the Continent are not just for Conservatives.

Long before the ToriesDavid Cameron, it was Labour’s Harold Wilson who offered up a referendum on Europe in a bid to quell party quarrels — and neither lasted in office for long afterwards.

Now, although they deny it publicly, there are growing tensions in Starmer’s already bruised Government as he seeks his so-called EU “reset”.

The second-referendum fanboy bound himself to Brexit as the price for winning the election, and now hundreds of Labour MPs watch agog as Reform cements challenger status in their pro-Leave seats.

Lukewarm soup

They will not let No10 forget the manifesto commitment not to reverse Brexit.

Vocal critics of a second referendum like Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy share a Cabinet table with People’s Vote champions like Pat McFadden, while Foreign Secretary David Lammy does little to disguise his unreconstructed Europhilia.

No10 is preparing to “go hostile” on Reform leader Nigel Farage as he emerges as the greatest threat to a second Labour term, while large swathes of the party membership still want the PM to rejoin the EU bloc.

They’re led by Sir Sadiq Khan who unhelpfully won’t shut up about it, despite the London Mayor’s recent gift of a gong.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir’s naive hopes of a better deal with the EU simply because he is not Boris Johnson — or because he did all he could to undo the Leave vote — must surely now have evaporated like vapour from the back of the Prime Minister’s private jet.

Any attempt to fiddle with the divorce terms or, as Starmer wishes, forge a whole new separate side deal on defence, will come at a hefty price.

As the PM tucks into his lukewarm soup with the EU27 tonight, expect that to be hammered home in two dozen co-ordinated leaders’ speeches.

And just as many a British PM before Starmer has discovered, the crunch will come on the sacred EU commitment to free movement.

No10 is preparing to ‘go hostile’ on Reform leader Nigel Farage as he emerges as the greatest threat to a second Labour term

Harry Cole

They hate the fact we shut our doors to EU students and citizens.

And while they may dress it all up as a Youth Mobility Scheme, work placements for the under-40s, or special access for EU students in certain job sectors, what is clear is this will be their pound of flesh.

The flare has gone up from the Home Office — with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper unrelenting yesterday, warning that more arrivals is “not the right starting point for us at all”.

She has made it clear to the PM that such a move is incompatible with bringing down net migration — and however you spin it, hundreds of thousands of Europeans coming to work here would count towards labour statistics so it’s a non-starter for Cooper.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves, on the other hand, is keeping her cards close to her chest.

But Chancellors desperate for growth are too often tempted by the migration lever for a quick fix.

While Starmer is not the first PM to try to take on Europe with a divided Cabinet, it never tends to go well.

Neither side seems up for a protracted negotiation — but get ready for a few months of red lines, tunnels, leaks, briefings and endless Eurocrats willy-waving as they sniff another chance to punish Les Rosbifs for having the temerity to leave their little club.

And it’s already begun, with one particularly obnoxious briefing from an “EU diplomat” to The Times last week bragging that playing hardball “worked for us the first time around with Boris and will work for us again with Starmer”. But did it, really?

Downing Street dismiss this as negotiation foreplay, but frankly we all know Starmer is no Johnson.

Knife fight

Boris deselected members of his own party and held the gun of No Deal to the heads of not only the EU, but Parliament and Whitehall, in his efforts to force an acceptable zero-tariff, zero-quota trade deal through — in a way that his predecessor as PM, Theresa May, had three times tried and failed to do before being ejected from office.

The stakes are not as high this time, but Starmer could do worse than look at which recent PM actually managed to walk away from Brussels with something, by refusing to dance to the EU’s tune.

So far, Starmer’s team talk of buckets full of concessions — giving the impression they are bringing technocratic niceties to a knife fight.

Cameron discovered the hard way that this gets you nowhere, just as May found out the EU is more than willing to throw a national leader to the wolves before climbing down.

Enjoy your dinner, Sir Keir, but just remember it’s you on the menu back home if this all goes wrong.

A LITTLE birdie tells me Conservative Party bigwigs and senior staff to the Leader of the Opposition are holding a crisis meeting this afternoon, over the dire state of polling and empty coffers.

With the Tories now consistently in third place to Labour and Reform, one source whispered: “Panic stations!”

The party is so broke that shadow ministers have been told they can only hire advisers if they stick them on their own parliamentary payroll or privately find donations to pay for them.

HAS Two Tier Keir become Tier Four Keir?

The PM is facing VERY awkward questions today, as an explosive new book suggests he may have broken lockdown rules on Christmas Eve 2020.

Get In, by my brilliant Westminster colleagues Patrick Maguire and Gabriel Pogrund, reveals Sir Keir’s personal voice coach (yes, really) was at the then opposition boss’s side for a virtual press conference about Brexit that lockdown Christmas.

But unfortunately for Mr Rules, strict Tier 4 laws in place then meant it was illegal for anyone not working in “essential public services” or “direct Covid-19 response work” to travel to work.

There were no exceptions for voice coaches, however much Sir Keir needed one.

And remember this is the guy who once promised to resign if he was ever caught breaking the rules.

Jasmine Harman pays emotional tribute to A Place in the Sun’s Jonnie Irwin on anniversary of his death

Jasmine, 49, said: “Dear Jonnie, I miss you. Time goes by too quickly. A year already.

“The hole that you left behind will never be filled. You were (and you still are) an inspiration to so so many people, myself included.”

“Love and thoughts to your wonderful family and amazing friends.”

Commenting on the tribute, one fan said: “Taken way too soon 💙. A pleasure to watch him this weekend on A Place In the Sun re runs. Such a lovely man. Thoughts to his family and friends.”

A second wrote: “A beautiful tribute, Jasmine.”

“Very much missed…will raise a glass for you tonight Jonnie,” said a third.

While a fourth posted: “He was such an inspiration to everyone.”

Jonnie died on 2 February 2024 aged just 50 following a battle with lung cancer.

The presenter had three young children with his widow Jessica Irwin.

Last year it was revealed how Jonnie had passed his entire £953,000 estate to his wife.

His final will was signed in October 2022.

Documents obtained by The Sun show the brave presenter had £956,967 in assets, reduced to £953,425 after deductions were taken.

The will was signed off by a probate court in Newcastle, where he moved from his native Leicestershire.

How Arsenal spent ENTIRE Man City clash winding up Erling Haaland – from brutal celebrations to grabbing shorts

ERLING HAALAND might remember the day he reached 250 club goals in precisely the opposite way he’d like to.

Blame Arsenal for that, with a tireless display of winding-up the Manchester City striker that went far beyond their 5-1 victory.

Erling Haaland and Gabriel in a post-match discussion.

Brazilian star Gabriel thought he was a roaring success in taunting Haaland

Such a dire loss was only the final insult for the 24-year-old, who won the Prem title and Golden Boot in his first two seasons at the Etihad.

Haaland‘s “Stay Humble” message for Gunners boss Mikel Arteta last September ignited discontent between certain players at both clubs.

And you didn’t have to read between the lines on Sunday to see which two players had claimed the lead roles.

Arsenal centre-back Gabriel had gone into the match saying: “It’s a battle, a war”.

And judging by his efforts almost every time he came up against the Norwegian, it was also combat he took personally.

When Martin Odegaard rammed the Gunners in front after just two minutes, Gabriel roared with joy right in the face of Haaland.

Many viewers were impressed with the calm way the former Borussia Dortmund hero dealt with that – as he virtually ignored the Brazilian.

Myles Lewis-Skelly then showed that Arsenal believe you are never too young to goad the goal GOAT.

The 18-year-old swerved in a classy third goal and sunk to the grass for what fans labelled a a “s***house” Haaland-style celebration.

The defender sat with his arms out and eyes closed – while team-mates lauded him from above.

Meanwhile, Gabriel continued his series of niggly encounters with Haaland – sometimes appearing to push him away off the ball.

The two exchanged words at one moment, with the forward responding by smiling.

And Gabriel’s worst moment – or best, depending how you look at it, arrived when the Gunners were 4-1 up.

The 27-year-old was on the ground when he reached out to tug down at Haaland’s shorts from behind.

Again the City man, this time quite literally, appeared to take the matter in his stride.

He glanced round to see what was happening but carried on walking away.

Unfortunately for Haaland, Sunday meant could also be seeing the back of his third Prem crown in a row.

Fourth-placed City are now 15 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Some fans reacted to the Gunners merciless treatment of Haaland by telling him: “If you talk the talk you have to walk the walk.”

Needle from Gabriel, yes. Haaland is an adult.

Fan's verdict

Another suggested: “The Prem has missed something like this.”

And a third said: “As it should be. A defender should rattle strikers and that’s what big Gabby is doing.”

But others praised Haaland for appearing to keep his composure.

Sky Sports posted a clip of a string of incidents involving the 6ft 4ins ace and his man marker, adding the words: “It’s safe to say there was a bit of needle between Haaland and Gabriel today…”

But one fan posted: “Needle from Gabriel, yes. Haaland is an adult.”

However, the mature performance as a team came from Arsenal, with City gifting the Gunners their opener then collapsing in the last 34 minutes.

Poor Haaland had to grin and bear all that too.

Mum of tragic Brit lawyer Simone White, 28, who died after drinking methanol-laced shots in Laos reveals her final text

THE heartbroken mum of Laos methanol poison victim, Simone White, has revealed the haunting final text the Brit lawyer sent to her.

Six unsuspecting tourists were tragically killed after drinking the same laced shots at a hostel bar in Vang Vieng last November.

Simone, 28 was among the victims after she was rushed to hospital in a near paralytic state before being placed on life support for three days.

Her mum Sue took a hellish 16-hour journey from Kent to Laos after hearing of her daughter’s grave condition.

She said she feared Simone would die after being called by the hospital who told her she needed emergency brain surgery.

After arriving at Laos hospital Sue was given the devastating ultimatum over whether to leave her daughter on life support or not.

Doctors refused to switch off the machine due to their religion – but told Sue she could do it herself.

The distraught mum said she had to take a tube out of her dying daughter’s mouth before making the incredibly painful and “traumatic” decision to switch off the machine.

Simone’s official cause of death was confirmed as a bleed on the brain, an inquest heard.

Three months on from the tragic events, Sue has now revealed she was sent a text message from her daughter the day before the fatal shots were consumed.

Speaking on Australia‘s 60 Minutes news show, Sue said the message read: “I’m having the best time, you know, it’s an absolutely fantastic holiday.”

The mum continued: “That’s the last message I got from her, and that was on the Tuesday, probably early evening Laos time – just before this incident occurred.

“She’d messaged me as it was all happening but that was the final message I got from her.”

On the same show, Simone’s close pal Bethany Clarke spoke about the harrowing evening when the countless shots were taken.

Bethany had met the lawyer in Southeast Asia to explore the country and miraculously survived the vodka poisoning.

Bethany says she remembers watching the bartender pour the toxic drinks but had no clue anything was wrong.

The friends woke up the next day feeling incredibly lethargic and only slightly ill, she said.

She told 60 Minutes she felt “not that bad, I didn’t think anything bad was going to happen”.

But now Bethany revealed that lethargy was a symptom of the methanol poisoning.

She said: “You just physically can’t move, you’re more or less paralysed.

“You can still walk but everything is much, much, much more difficult than it would be ordinarily.”

Their symptoms became worse and Bethany started feeling nauseous, incredibly fatigued, and she even fainted.

The pair were taken to hospital by other travellers, where Simone began to have seizures and could no longer breathe on her own.

Bethany has made a full recovery, despite drinking the same number of shots as Simone.

She said it has been difficult coming to terms that she survived while Simone died.

Bethany said: “I think we’ve just had to try and get through the funeral and obviously we want to try and spread awareness and make sure other people don’t have to go through this.

“And then I can sort of start on my own journey of trying to come to terms with it all.”

Eight employees at Nana Backpackers Hostel were arrested over the poisoning, but all were released from custody.

No charges have been laid for the six deaths and the hostel has been closed.

The hostel manager, Duong Duc Toan, and a bartender, Toan Van Vanng, previously denied allegations that methanol was in drinks.

Toan said he bought the alcohol from a licensed seller and said the free shots were given to 100 people.

The hostel manager claimed other guests had not reported being ill and he took a shot in front of cops.

One pal claimed staff refused to call an ambulance and a female worker massaged the toes and feet of one of the Danish women while she was having a seizure.

Danish friends Anne-Sofie Orkild Coyman, 20, and Freja Vennervald, 21, died after they were left vomiting blood for 13 hours.

Australian friends Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, both 19, also died in the tragedy.

The alarm was raised by staff over their condition after the teens failed to check out on the morning of November 13.

Why is methanol so deadly?

METHANOL is a super-toxic version of alcohol that may be present in drinks if added by crooks to make them stronger or if they are brewed or distilled badly, writes The Sun's health correspondent Sam Blanchard.

The consequences can be devastating because as little as a single shot of contaminated booze could be deadly, with just 4ml of methanol potentially enough to cause blindness.

Prof Oliver Jones, a chemist at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, said: “The body converts methanol to formic acid.

“Formic acid blocks the action of an enzyme that is critical to how the body uses oxygen to generate energy.

“If it stops working, cells cannot take up or use oxygen from the blood and lack of oxygen causes problems in a range of organs as the cells start to die.

“Symptoms of methanol poisoning include vomiting, seizures and dizziness.

“The optic nerve seems to be particularly vulnerable to methanol toxicity, so there is the potential for temporary or permanent blindness, and even death.

“While thankfully rare, methanol poisoning is very serious, and treatment should be given at a hospital.”

An unexpected but key way of treating methanol poisoning is to get the patient drunk with normal alcohol – known as ethanol – to distract the liver and stop it processing the methanol.
