Brave Brit aid worker loses arm & leg after being blown up in Russian drone attack as he rescued trapped Ukrainians

A BRITISH aid worker lost his arm and leg in a savage Russian drone strike as he rescued Ukrainians trapped along the frontlines.

Heroic volunteer Eddy Scott was seriously injured whilst evacuating innocent civilians from the war-torn city of Pokrovsk.

Brave Eddy was driving a clearly-marked armoured humanitarian truck when it was targeted by an enemy FPV drone on January 30.

He was pulled from the blood-splattered wreckage and rushed to hospital where surgeons amputated his left arm and leg.

Remarkably, Eddy was photographed smiling in his hospital bed and giving the thumbs up with his remaining hand as pals praised his courage.

He tearfully embraced fellow volunteer Filip Goncharov who pulled him free from the busted truck and wept: “You saved me man, you saved me.”

Horrifying pictures and video showed the immediate aftermath of the near-fatal assault.

The armoured truck he was driving was ripped open by the blast with blood spilled across the driver’s seat.

Sailor Eddy, from Shaftesbury, Dorset, took the brunt of the explosion and was rushed to hospital where surgeons battled to save his life.

His team had narrowly survived another attack by Russian forces in December last year as they evacuated three elderly women in Shevchenko.

In an online post from Pokrovsk, Eddy told how they were equipped with a high-tech tracker designed to give a live feed of kamikaze drones operating in the area.

The quad-copters are strapped with explosives by the enemy – and Ukrainian forces – and flown via first person live-feed cameras.

Attacks in frontline cities like Pokrovsk are happening on a daily basis.

Courageous Eddy described the deadly drones as being constantly in the air and the fear of Russian attacks always looming.

He said: “Sometimes we get lucky and the weather is bad. Snow, rain, and fog act as an invisibility cloak, hiding us from prying eyes.

“But even when they can’t see, they still shoot. Most of our evacuees are waiting for us when we arrive.

“They are ready to leave. But some need convincing. The safety of leaving, and the danger of staying. Most decide to leave.

“We pack their belongings into the van. Some bring bags and boxes and jars and burlap sacks and trolleys and… We take everything we can fit.

“Some have only a single bag containing their most important possessions.”

He noted that Pokrovsk is one of the worst hit areas in Ukraine he has visited saying the city has “suffered”.

“Every day fresh debris litter our routes through the city. Blocks of flats destroyed, their last inhabitants evacuated days before,” Eddy said.

“The rolling storm of artillery, and plumes of smoke across the city.”

Base UA, a non-governmental organisation Eddy was working for, said the van was hit directly during the evacuation of two citizens.

The group said Eddy “took the majority of the blow” and was left with crippling injuries.

He is only alive due to the brilliant efforts of his close friend Filip, who gave lifesaving care under extreme pressure to Eddy.

In the end, doctors only had to amputate Eddy’s left leg and arm.

Two of the evacuees also sustained minor shrapnel injuries.

Base UA added: “Russian troops are shelling humanitarian organisations and civilians. We see this in Pokrovsk every day.

“We continue to support Eddy and Filip during this difficult time.”

Fundraiser for Eddy

Eddy, pictured with his German Shepherd Ice, has repeatedly travelled to Ukraine to help since Russia invaded three years ago.

In December he wrote about feeling settled in Ukraine – adding: “I have responsibilities now, with both the world’s cutest dog and goddaughter, and an obligation to help defend my home.

“Now I’m back at the aforementioned crack home, listening to the windows rattle and planning the next phase of work, a four hour drive from the closest l’ve been to peace in months.”

A GoFundMe page has since been set up and has already raised over £46,000.

A post on the fundraiser read: “During a civilian evacuation from the frontline in Pokrovsk, our team’s armoured vehicle was hit by a FPV drone.

“Most got out with minor injuries but Eddy, who was the driver that day, took the majority of the blow and was seriously injured.

“He consequently had his left arm and leg amputated. He is now in stable condition in an ICU and receiving the critical care he needs.”

It adds: “Eddy has dedicated the last three years of his life to helping others, risking his life countless times, and now it’s our turn to help him.

“Eddy has a long road ahead, and during this time will not have any way of earning any income, so a portion of the money donated will go to his living costs during/after rehabilitation.”

Another post from his friend Nick Laidlaw said: “Eddy let me stay with him near the Eastern front for free during my last trip to Ukraine.

“He gave me and my translator a bed, and hot meals in the evening.

“During the day, I’d be out filming artillery or medical evacuations, and at that time, Eddy was helping to move hospital equipment out of reach of Russian artillery.

“And still, every night he came home and had a hot meal waiting for us after he had worked tirelessly for free the entire day.

“Eddy is one of the most selfless and helpful souls I’ve ever met.

“He’s helped the civilians of Ukraine for years, and now it’s our turn to help him.

“Instead of buying that cup of Starbucks, please consider helping Eddy recover as the victim of a war crime.”

Fellow Brit Harley William continued: “We are raising money, for the best care for Eddy, who risked his life every day to save lives on the frontline.

“He’s a British lad, whose got the biggest heart. He’s now an amputee.”

The attack on Eddy’s humanitarian truck comes exactly a year after fellow Brit aid workers Chris Parry and Andrew Bagshaw were killed on an evacuation run in Soledar, eastern Ukraine.

In a statement issued at the time, Chris’s family said: “His selfless determination in helping the old, young and disadvantaged there has made us and his larger family extremely proud.”

Christopher Dean fights back tears as Dancing On Ice pays emotional tribute to US plane crash victims

DANCING On Ice’s Christopher Dean fought back tears on tonight’s show while paying tribute to the victims of the Washington air disaster.

Last week 67 people died, including members of an American figure skating team, when a Black Hawk helicopter collided with a commercial American Airlines flight as it was coming in to land at the Reagan Airport.

Sixty-seven people died in the tragedy[/caption]

Taking a moment to reflect on the disaster, Olympic legend Christopher said: “17 members of the skating community lost their lives and it’s felt across the world.

“We want to send our sincere condolences to all the family and friends who lost loved ones that day.”

Host Holly Willoughby acknowledged Christopher choking up, telling him she knew how much he was moved by the incident.

The jet’s pilots have been named as captain Jonathan Campos, 34, and first officer Samuel Lilley, 28.

US president Donald Trump suggested the military chopper was “flying too high by a lot” seconds before the crash.

It is understood the helicopter pilots had requested a predetermined flight path, referred to as Route 4, from air traffic control.

This would have allowed the Black Hawk, which was carrying three “fairly experienced” pilots wearing night vision goggles, to fly at low altitude along the bank on the east side of the river.

But the doomed chopper flew higher and further away from the bank than it should have done, officials told The New York Times.

The helicopter should have flown below 200ft but it is claimed it had ascended to more than 300ft when it hit the plane.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said: “The Black Hawk helicopter was flying too high, by a lot. It was far above the 200ft limit.

“That’s not really too complicated to understand, is it???”

Mr Trump has signed an executive order demanding an immediate assessment of aviation security.

Investigators have already started analysing the black box data recorder recovered from the plane.

Tennis stars have to be separated in furious on-court row… AFTER heated Davis Cup match finished

TWO tennis stars were kept apart after a simmering row during a Davis Cup rubber erupted again at the finish.

Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild was furious that French rival  Arthur Fils failed to concede a crucial point after what many reckoned was a clear umpiring error.

Brazilian ace Thiago Seyboth Wild was upset France’s Arthur Fils failed to correct what many reckon was a blatant umpiring mistake
Two men embracing.
Fils was guided away by team members following the late flare-up

With both players at the net, Fils drilled a fierce backhand out, with Wild appearing to sway out of the way.

Sp the South American was stunned when he was ruled to have touched the ball with his back as it passed him.

That meant his serve had been broken, leaving him staring defeat at 1-6 4-5 down.

And it meant a tense contest exploded.

Wild stopped in amazement, flinging his arms out wide in amazement, when he heard the umpire’s call.

His protests to the officials got him nowhere.

And  his frustration quickly turned to Wild, who walked off and ignored pleas to tell the umpire the ball hadn’t hit his opponent.

Instead he sat down and gestured towards the official’s chair.

The Brazilian team were as furious as Wild, with one member complaining loudly to the umpire: “It’s the wrong decision! It wasn’t even close!”

Once Fils served out to clinch the rubber, the anger ramped up.

He was confronted by Brazilians, and eventually the two players were steered away from each other.

Viewers mainly seemed to side with Wild afterwards, many accusing Fils of poor sportsmanship for failing to intervene.

One fan said: “A player with integrity overrides the umpire .”Another posted: “

Deplorable umpiring. But Fils has poor character for not calling his own shot out.”

But a few observers suggested: “The ump made the call. Thiago’s issue should be with the ump”

And the pro-Fils camp included comments like this: “Respect?! Fils didn’t even celebrate his win because of the umpire mistake, went for respectful handshake. It’s Seyboth Wild who got the things heated.”

The 20-year-old winner later admitted he too thought the umpire had been WRONG.

He said: “At the end, it was a bit hot, that’s true.’

“I think he didn’t touch the ball on the point that gave me 5-4, which is a fact of play that puts him at a disadvantage.

“But that’s the way it is. I think if it had gone the other way, he wouldn’t have given me the point either.

“There’s no problem between him and me. We explained ourselves afterwards.”

France went on to win the match 3-0 with victory in Sunday’s doubles, earning a second-round tie with Croatia.

Everyone can see the man walking over a bridge but you need a high IQ to work out the mistake in 7 seconds

THIS is the brainteaser that asks you to find what’s wrong with this man’s otherwise delightful morning stroll.

Everyone can see the gent walking across the bridge, but only those with a high IQ can spot the mistake in the image in seven seconds.

Illustration of a man standing on a brick bridge over a stream.

Can you spot the mistake in this serene scene?[/caption]

This teaser is tricky because there isn’t a lot going on in the background of the image to spot.

The lack of detail in what is there also complicates things, because nothing jumps out as being wrong immediately in the picture.

It makes for quite a simple image that doesn’t give you an obvious place to begin your search.

For example, the plain nature of the sky and the horizon behind the man means there aren’t many obvious mistakes that could be there.

It means that you might have to look for more obscure elements of the brainteaser that are hidden in plain sight.

The key to this one is to focus on the area behind the man.

Are you ready, because the clock is ticking!

If you’re still struggling, a hint would be to pay attention to the flow of the water.

People who are able to solve the puzzle quickly possess good observational skills and high cognitive speed.

It tests your ability to process a high volume of visual information and the ability to concentrate under high amounts of pressure.

How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?

Engaging in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.

Some benefits include:

  • Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in these activities challenges the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
  • Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
  • Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
  • Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
  • Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.

Psychologists at The University of Glasgow found that staring at an optical illusion can improve eye sight by allowing you to see small print.

Escape London says puzzles can also give your mind a great workout and may “boost your brain’s activity” which “reduces the risk of dementia.”

These can help to stimulate several parts of the brain at the same time.

Tasks like this can also provide people with a productive way to have fun and relax.

Have you solved it? Don’t worry, if you’re still struggling we’ve included the solution to the brainteaser down below.

If you’ve solved that, why not try testing your mental agility on these ones?

Arsenal player ratings: Lewis-Skelly thrives when it matters but Saliba’s biggest flaw brutally exposed in win

ARSENAL kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a battering of floundering champions Manchester City.

The Gunners welcomed Pep Guardiola‘s troops to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon, which they started nine points behind league leaders Liverpool.

But they reduced the gap between themselves and the Merseysiders to six points thanks to a 5-1 WIN over the visitors.

Goals from Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri did the business on a cold evening in north London.

SunSport’s Chisanga Malata was live in attendance at the Emirates to rate and slate the performances of Mikel Arteta’s troops…

David Raya – 7/10

Had very little to do in the first half but made a brilliant save in the 22nd minute to deny a goalbound header from Josko Gvardiol.

Made another stunning save two minutes from the half-time interval, stopping a deflected Savinho shot from close range. Powerless to stop Erling Haaland‘s 55th-minute header from briefly levelling the scores.

Jurrien Timber – 6

Didn’t offer his usual attacking threat going forward but was solid defensively. Picked up a pointless yellow breaking up a harmless counter-attack in the 24th minute. Almost scored late in the second half.

William Saliba – 5

Didn’t have much to do in the first half but won all his aerial battles in the first 45 minutes. Marshalled the defence well early in the second period but was embarrassingly outjumped and outmuscled by Haaland for City’s equaliser – a major flaw of his that continues to be exposed.

Gabriel Magalhaes – 6

Like his defensive partner, he was seldom called into action in the first half. Dominant in the air in his battles with Haaland, who he trolled after Odegaard’s goal.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 8

Continues to endear himself to the Emirates faithful with composure and tenacity beyond his years as he brilliantly floated between left back and midfield.

Put real daylight between the two sides with a thumping finish just after the hour mark. This young lad is a real bright prospect for both the Gunners and England.

His trolling of Haaland by copying the Norwegian’s ‘Lotus’ celebration went down a storm with fans.

Thomas Partey – 7

Steady in the heart of midfield and broke up play well when required.

Fired the Gunners back into the lead in the 57th minute with a deflected shot from outside the box.

Martin Odegaard – 7

Was in the right place at the right time to benefit from the aftermath of an uncharacteristic Manuel Akanji error and break the deadlock.

Was at the heart of everything good the north Londoners did going forward.

Declan Rice – 6

Combative, as always, in the middle of the park and played a role in the home side taking the lead, teeing up Havertz who squared the ball to Odegaard.

Leandro Trossard – 6

Was particularly lively on the left in the first half, giving Matheus Nunes a real run for his money. His end product, however, wasn’t the best.

Gabriel Martinelli – 6

Lively on the right wing in the early goings. Found the back of the net in the fifth minute after some beautiful play from Odegaard but was needlessly offside.

Forced a good save out of Ortega with a rasping effort in the 68th minute.

Kai Havertz – 6

Lively early doors, testing Stefan Ortega with a tame shot in the first minute. Teed up Odegaard for a tap in a few moments later.

Missed a golden opportunity to double the lead in the 25th minute, dragging the ball wide with the goal at his absolute mercy.

Made amends for his howler by finishing an even harder chance in the 76th minute. He well and truly needed that as he looked absolutely devoid of confidence.

Arsenal 5 Man City 1: Gunners thrash rivals in spiky clash to close gap on Liverpool and give Erling Haaland payback

HUMBLE pie is a dish best served cold – and Erling Haaland was force-fed until he was sick to the stomach at a throbbing Emirates Stadium.

Manchester City’s Norwegian goal machine had told Mikel Arteta to ‘stay humble’ and chucked a ball at the head of Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes after City stole an injury-time equaliser in September.

Arsenal fans couldn’t resist giving some stick to Haaland after previous comments[/caption]

Here was payback. When Martin Odegaard fired an early opener, Gabriel screamed into Haaland’s face.

When Myles Lewis-Skelly netted a peach of a first senior goal, he aped Haaland’s goal trademark celebration.

And when Kai Havertz netted the fourth in this rout of Pep Guardiola’s fallen champions, tens of thousands of gleeful Gooners sang ‘Haaland’s a c***, ole, ole!”

Haaland actually headed an equaliser early in the second half but Thomas Partey’s deflected shot restored Arsenal’s lead and then they ran riot.

Revenge was sweet for that near-miss at the Etihad, when Arsenal’s ten men had staged the mother of all rearguard efforts to hold on to a 2-1 half-time lead only to be denied at the death.

Haaland’s antics after that last-gap John Stones equaliser have not been forgotten in north London.

And there was no need for any Arsenal humility here, as City were put through the shredder.

Guardiola’s is a team thrown into transition in mid-season, thanks to their shocking pre-Christmas meltdown – there are new players, plenty of suddenly old players and no obvious sense of identity.

City will struggle to make the Champions League places on this evidence, while Arsenal retain a slim hope of the title – they are six points behind Liverpool, having played a game more than the runaway leaders.

The Gunners are now unbeaten in five meetings with City – having previously held a shocking record against Guardiola’s team.

https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1886091188685373819

With Ederson deemed unfit, Stefan Ortega replaced the Brazilian in the City goal – and within 103 seconds, he was fishing the ball from the back of the net.

Manuel Akanji was the fall guy – a sloppy pass intercepted by the alert Leandro Trossard before Declan Rice fed Havertz who squared for Odegaard to apply a simple finish.

It was only the Arsenal skipper’s second Premier League goal of the season and it was first time since 2003 that City had conceded inside three minutes in back-to-back Premier League matches, although they had come back to defeat Chelsea last weekend.

When Odegaard netted Gabriel ran around Haaland and screamed into the Norwegian’s face – clearly not forgetting the City striker hurling a ball at the back of his head after City had rescued a late point at the Etihad in September.

If that was proof that Arsenal were fired up to avenge that near-miss, then the proof kept coming.

Arteta’s men were pressing like a pack of dogs, first into every 50-50, Declan Rice – in particular – tackling with a ravenous intent.

https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1886108357351645468 Arsenal vs. Manchester City match stats graphic.

Gabriel Martinelli soon found the net, lifting a shot over Ortega but even Arsenal’s army of keyboard-warrior conspiracy theorists couldn’t argue against the Brazilian being well offside.

It took some time for City to join but when they did Omar Marmoush, on his second start since a move from Eintracht Frankfurt, fired over from 20 yards.

Then Marmoush delivered the corner from which Josko Gvardiol’s near-post header was pushed onto the bar by David Raya.

But Arsenal should have been 2–0 when Rice performed a mugging on Mateo Kovacic on the edge of the box, only for Havertz to somehow slice his shot wide.

It was an absolute sitter and it might persuade Arsenal’s hierarchy to stick an extra zero onto their £40million bid for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins ahead of tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

Odegaard started cheerleading manically but the German’s miss looked like a haunting in the making.

Illustration of Arsenal's average team position against Manchester City. Illustration of Manchester City's average team position against Arsenal. https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1886109023377768468

City started to play, Phil Foden beginning to pull some strings and shortly before half-time Raya was forced into a smart low stop to keep out Savinho’s deflected shot.

After the break, it all went off.

First the great blond bogeyman Haaland got in front of William Saliba to power a header past Raya, after a delicious turn and cross from Savinho

Haaland raced to the City fans in the corner of the Clock End and thumped the badge on his chest as Arsenal’s supporters responded with a deluge of invective.

It didn’t matter. Almost immediately, Arsenal were back in front.

It was a criminal stray pass from Foden which picked out Partey. When the Arsenal midfielder let rip, Stones turned and the ball cannoned off his back into the corner of the net, leaving Ortega helpless.

https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1886114290291093821

And six minutes later, the highlight of Arsenal’s afternoon arrived.

Rice fed Lewis-Skelly who advanced past Savinho, shimmied, then curled his shot around Stones – Ortega only able to push it against the inside of the post and in.

Lewis-Skelly celebrated in Haaland style – the classic seated meditation pose – adding insult to the Norwegian’s injury.

Rice stormed forward and fed Martinelli, whose shot was pushed away.

Match Stats

Soon, it was four, Partey releasing Martinelli who fed Havertz to cut inside Stones and steer his shot past Ortega.

In injury-time, Ethan Nwaneri cut inside and thumped home Arsenal’s fifth.

“Erling Haaland, stay humble, you c***” they sang.”

This was utterly brutal for Haaland and the rest of Guardiola’s team.
