Speaking to WST TV after the World Open, he discussed ‘dark times’ as he struggled to bounce back from the dip in form.
Higgins said: “You go through some dark times, drives home and flights home and you’re talking to yourself asking if you need to do it, if you need to put yourself through it.
“As I’ve always said, the competitive nature within yourself that has got you to a certain level within the sport probably wouldn’t allow you to back down and drift away meekly.
“That’s what’s kept me driving on to try and taste the winning feeling again.”
The result will hopefully see him kick on, leaving behind the mire of the past four years.
He continued, saying “I felt great, I felt no pressure whatsoever and it was a big monkey off my back really because I’d lost in some pretty heartbreaking finals.
“To get that off my back I’m now thinking that I’ve proved to myself I can do it at this age alongside the likes of Ronnie (O’Sullivan) and Mark (Williams).
“They are two players I admire so much, so this was a big win for me.”
The win was a crucial one for Higgins, boosting him to eighth in world rankings and extending his stay in the top flight of snooker for the next two seasons.
He said he is looking forward to having more agency over the tournaments he plays in.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been in the right space to pick and choose events like some of the other boys, but I think now it will give me the scope to not play in as many tournaments,” he said.
“I know I’ve said before ‘what else would I do’ but with having that cushion I’m going to have where you can be pretty much be guaranteed then it’s good to be able pick and choose.”

JP McMANUS has coughed up £25,000 to add the antepost Grand National favourite Inothewayurthinkin into the Cheltenham Gold Cup field.
He will form part of a maximum field of 10 for Friday’s big race, with Galopin Des Champs still the red-hot favourite at the final confirmation stage.

The Gavin Cromwell-trained Inothewayurthinkin landed a huge gamble when bolting up in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival last year.
He’s been a slow burner this season but ran well to finish fourth behind Gold Cup jolly Galopin Des Champs at the Dublin Racing Festival last time.
And with JP’s other top chaser, Fact To File, set to drop back in trip for the Ryanair Chase, he has called up his classy seven-year-old to play the role of super sub.
The horse is a general 7-1 shot for the Gold Cup and Cromwell said: “He seems to be very well in himself and he’s progressing nicely.
“Just like last season, he seems to be improving as the season goes on.
“He did a nice piece of work this week and I don’t think he will be far away in the Gold Cup.”
While Fact To File was taken out of the Gold Cup picture, McManus could have a second horse to take on Galopin Des Champs after Corbetts Cross was left in by Emmet Mullins.
Long-time second favourite Banbridge, who won the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day, remains in contention.
Ahoy Senor, The Real Whacker and Royale Pagaille will form the British Gold Cup challenge, but Venetia Williams has decided against running L’Homme Presse in the Blue Riband.

Subaru of America is set to part ways with the Legacy nameplate this spring.
The Subaru Legacy was a spirited choice for a reasonable number of credits on Gran Turismo; for others, it’s the iconic car that Colin McRae drove to his first World Rally Championship win back in 1993.
However, in a bid to “reflect market shifts”, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, featuring Subaru’s new hybrid system delivering a combined 194 horsepower, is slated for release.
They also gifted the 2026 Forester Hybrid with the same setup.
With this, fans will see introduction of the 2026 Forester Wilderness as the rugged, compact crossover SUV that seeks adventures just about everywhere.
Soon, the Subaru of America will welcome the premiere of the seventh-generation Outback model – presumably complete with the new Hybrid powertrain and also as a Wilderness representative.
AutoYa have even revealed what the 2026 Subaru Legacy may look like on its YouTube channel.
Modeled after their vision of the upcoming 2026 Subaru Outback (Hybrid and Wilderness), the 2026 Subaru Legacy has a slightly less extravagant front fascia – but the CGI resemblance is still apparent.
The host offers very little explanation about the quest to gift the departing Legacy one last chance of survival.
Instead, the channel’s resident pixel master’s work is front and center – the unofficial, hypothetical design project is shown both from inside and outside, in a quick comparison against the current model, and with loads of luxurious hues in the cockpit and for the body.
“Space, pace and a handsome face” was Subaru’s blueprint for the Legacy back in 1989.
And its most luxurious car to date was designed primarily for the US market, where it and the Outback have sold well ever since.

SCHEMING Kim Jong-un has constructed a new missile base disguised as a private golf course, satellite images reveal.
Top analysts told The Sun how the James Bond villain-esque golf course features sand traps, grass and putting greens – but they believe they are being used to conceal launch pads and missile caches.

Satellite images reveal Kim‘s latest base, however, as he continues to ramp up his weapon development.
The pictures reveal what appears to be a private golf course near a recently demolished Kim family mansion in the Ryokpho district of southern Pyongyang.
But analysts from the Open Source Team at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies of the Middlebury Institute took a closer look.
Sam Lair, from the eagle-eyed team, said workers appeared to lay concrete across the valley site last summer to aid launch vehicles.
Wide roads and large concrete pads are telltale giveaways rocket man Kim wants to use the site to launch his missiles.
Grass was then used to cover the concrete base – and golf course-style features including sand traps added to not arouse suspicion.
Kim – whose father Kim Jong-il wildly claimed to have scored 11 holes in one in his first ever round of golf – has also had a building big enough to fit several intercontinental ballistic missile launchers constructed.
Research associate Sam said: “It seems the base has been disguised as a golf course by pouring concrete launch pads in fields and then covering them with turf or grass, manicured to have the appearance of a golf course.
“Moreover, sand traps have been added throughout the field with the launch pads.
“The large sections of concrete are one indication that it is a missile launch site.
“Another is the large, high-bay building nearby. The building is about 36 meters tall, large enough for long-range missile launchers to test their erector mechanisms indoors.
“Finally, the wide-radius turns that have been added to the roads around the facility would make it easier to drive a large transporter erector launcher.”
Analysts confirmed the base could be used to launch long-range missiles – though appears more operational at the moment.

Sam added: “The facility seems to be complete, and has been since about last November, suggesting it could be used for testing anytime.”
Circular platforms have been installed at the base, which could serve as launch pads for missiles.
Kim has doubled down on his weapon development in recent years, with North Korea beginning studies into nuclear power in the 1950s.
The tyrant wants his nation to be a powerhouse on the nuclear and missile front, with ongoing efforts to elevate status and improve readiness.
THE SUNHow Kim could look on a day out at his missile golf course[/caption]
NORTH Korea has unexpectedly blocked tourists from visiting the nation just weeks after the dictatorship bizarrely opened up its borders to some Western visitors.
Kim Jong-un has attempted to attract international travellers with a “capitalistic city” after the secretive country shut itself off from the world in January 2020.
The dictatorship slowly started to open up to Chinese and Russian tourists from 2023 but it only began accepting some Western tourists last month.
Kim had set up an experimental “capitalist city” to welcome some visitors under a strict itinerary.
These tours were in the northerly city of Rason – chillingly sitting right on the Russian and Chinese borders.
Despite this, Pyongyang mysteriously suspended these trips for unclear reasons, according to tour operators.
Travel agency Young Pioneer Tours wrote online: “We have been advised by our partners… that tours to Rason are currently paused.”
Pyongyang has several nuclear and missile facilities that have not been revealed.
North Korea’s iron-fist regime is thought to have up to 20 undeclared ballistic missiles operating bases and support facilities.
But with shady Kim using tactics such as disguising them as golf courses there are likely to be more.
Sam added: “Before the recent construction and the installation of concrete, that area was farmland, so it was not a golf course previously.
“It does look like the estate nearby was demolished to prepare the area for the new missile site.
“The Kim family has residences all over the country, and many nearby since this site is not far from Pyongyang.
“One notable one would be the Samsok residence east of Pyongyang.”
Kim watched over North Korea’s latest rocket test last week as strategic cruise missiles were launched.
KCNA, the state news agency of North Korea, said the test was designed to warn “enemies, who are seriously violating the security environment of the (country) and fostering and escalating the confrontation environment”.
The launch off the west coast of the Korean peninsula was also pegged to demonstrate “readiness of its various nuke operation means”.
Kim, as quoted by KCNA, said: “What is guaranteed by powerful striking ability is the most perfect deterrence and defense capacity.”

Pearce, who represented England 78 times, was taken to hospital after his mid-air scare and is now recovering.
Staff on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner checked him constantly and decided to change course to land at St John’s in Canada early on Monday.
Medics rushed on board and took the former Nottingham Forest defender to hospital.
He and his partner had been in the economy section of Flight VS156 that left the US at 8.45pm last Sunday.
A source said: “Stuart’s pains appeared to be getting worse as the flight continued.
“He was constantly shifting position in his seat to try and find some comfort.
“It was very clear the situation was serious. The crew and other passengers trained in first aid were marvellous.
“He received the best available care in the circumstances and was so grateful to everyone involved, and for the plane diverting to Canada.”
A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said last night: “Due to an unwell customer on board, the VS156 on March 2 flying from Las Vegas to London Heathrow diverted to St John’s International Airport, Canada, and was met by the medical services.
“The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is always our number one priority and we apologise for the delay to our customers’ journey.”

A VILLAGE row has exploded with locals threatening to tear down a set of £10,000 gates blocking off a shared path to “a mountain paradise”.
For generations, people have crossed a tiny patch of private land to reach Cwmparc Mountain to take in the views and admire Peregrine falcons and buzzards.
Protestors are angry about a proposed gate which would cut off a route to the mountainsRichard Swingler/Media WalesThe protest was attended by around 100 villagersRichard Swingler/Media WalesAthenaThe entrance to the property whose owners had gates installed in Cwmparc near Treorchy[/caption]
AthenaLocal resident Barry Ray is among those campaigning[/caption]
But a year ago new owners moved into an imposing property known locally as “The James Bond House”, which stands at the foot of the mountain.
The owners preside over a small patch of land that visitors need to cross to reach the mountain, 1,600ft above sea level.
They claim they have witnessed “dangerous driving, dog fouling, people urinating, aggression, theft, drugs and air rifles” since moving in last year
To combat the issue, the wealthy couple last month erected imposing grey gates to seal off the mountain track at Cwmparc, Rhondda, South Wales.
The move has left locals irate, with one villager saying: “A walk up the mountain was like stepping into heaven, but now we can’t get there because of the gates of hell.
“It’s a horrible way to treat people.”
Villagers feared the worst when the owners brought in security to stand 24/7 guard over the entrance to the mountain and its network of paths stretching dozens of miles.
Two CCTV cameras were installed, focusing on the gates to film anyone trying to get through.
David Powell, 53, who lives just 200 yards away, said: “There’s a fella threatening to use his pick-up truck to attach some chains to the gates and pull them down.
“I hope it doesn’t come to that, but feelings are running high and people feel their right to walk up the mountain has been stopped.
“I’ve used that path all my life, I go up there to look at the Peregrine falcons, buzzards and red kites.
“It’s a mountain paradise that the locals have used as far back as anyone can remember.”
The new owners, named locally as Laura and Adam Drew, incensed locals further by putting up a sign saying “no unauthorised access” – and made it look like an official forestry sign.
More than 70 people turned up for a peaceful protest in driving rain waving banners proclaiming: “No to the gate. Our mountains are there for all to enjoy.”
A social media campaign is under way and a petition has been signed by more than 3,000 locals.
NHS worker Anna Davies, 51, said: “The property has been there for years, people call it the James Bond House because it looks like somewhere he would live.
“The gates have been put up on a path that’s used by so many people, it was a Godsend during Covid.
“Schools take children on nature treks up there , I love it because once you’ve got to the top it’s downhill all the way.
“We had a huge turnout at the protest despite the pouring rain – people are furious their mountain has been taken away from them.”
The mountain access row – known jokingly as Gategate – has been taken up by Rhondda MP Chris Bryant and local Senedd Member Buffy Williams.
The code for a keypad to open the electric gates has been given to National Resources Wales who manage the mountain and to the Fire Brigade in case grass fires break out.
Environmental worker Matteusz Morga, 40, said he and girlfriend Anna Rogowska, 37, may have to see their terraced house nearby after living in the village of Cwmparc for 12 years.

Poland-born Matteusz said: “The mountain is the reason we came here, we were driving through the valley from the other side and just thought it was so beautiful.
“We both use it for mountain biking, trail running and walking – my girlfriend could not sleep after the gates were put up.
“It’s a unique area and should be accessible for everyone. If the gates stay up we may sell up and move to another part of Wales.”
Retired engineer Barrie Ray, 76, who lives in Cwmparc, said: “I’m so angry, it’s only about 20 yards of land that people have to cross.
“I just don’t believe their list of complaints. I’ve never heard anyone climbing mountains to take drugs. It’s nonsense.
“There was never a problem until these new people moved in. They haven’t integrated into village life, all we had is negativity.”
Mr Ray added that locals were annoyed that police were helping the landowners to stop walkers going over their land while local crime is on the increase.
The owners of the property and the controversial strip of their land failed to answer the two side doors to their property when Sun Online visited.
They issued a full statement earlier saying: “Our family made Cwmparc our home about a year ago and we have enjoyed settling our children in such a beautiful, welcoming community.
“Our property borders the forestry and our private entrance has been abused in a way that has left us no choice but to consult with authorities and advisers over what we should do.
“Our home and family were being subjected to illegal parking, dangerous driving (a child nearly knocked over), out-of-control dogs, dog-fouling, people urinating, aggression, theft, drugs, and air rifles.
“The issues continued, including torches being shone through the children’s bedroom at night. A decision was made that we needed to put security gates at our home to keep our children safe.
“We want to thank NRW, Welsh Water, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and the council for the time they have given to the issue and their support and approvals throughout.
“We want to thank the police who work tirelessly to keep everyone safe and who have provided reassurance to our family after several serious threats have been made.”
The couple said they are “working hard” to find an alternative solution including using an existing path at the side of their property which would provide an alternative route.
Their statement continued: “Work on clearing the path has already started but we ask for the community’s patience and understanding as the progress is weather-dependent.
“There is also an unused allotment to the right where an access gate could be installed and our family would personally help the community clear this to give access to the mountain provided we have the necessary consent.
“Thank you to those of you who have shown kindness and understanding towards the difficult situation we find ourselves in.
“Your kind words as fellow parents have motivated us to keep our faith in our community and help find an alternative solution which meets the needs of everyone concerned.
“We will engage directly with authorities in working on an alternative solution and ask the community to please direct any questions or suggestions you may have through the relevant official channels.”

Love Island fans worry over ‘miserable’ Andrew Le Page as he celebrates 30th birthday after split from Tasha GhouriThe pair split earlier this year leaving Andrew ‘heartbroken’The pair, who share a dog together, had recently bought a Hertfordshire home they were renovating
The love-lorn reality star captioned it: “ITS MY BIRTHDAY!
“Thank you so much for all the birthday messages it means the world, I love you all here’s to the 30’s.”
However, fans were quick to comment on how sad he looked, with one saying: “Just seen tashas instagram and now yours you both look so sad please get back together i need to see your lovely smiles again.”
Another agreed, saying: “Just want them back together.”
Others encouraged the TV star to ‘stay positive’ while many told him his 30s would be ‘a new chapter.’
Andrew was a finalist in season 8 of ITV2’s Love Island where he finished joint fourth with his then partner Tasha.
The 29-year-old continued dating the 26-year-old model and dancer after the show, before they moved in to a new home together in Hertforshire that they were excitedly renovating.
After moving out earlier this year, he told fans he’s “cried more times” than ever this year and would be heading back to a different island this time, his native Guernsey.
Referencing the split, he said: “End of an era. So, guys it’s been a pretty c**p start to the year and one I didn’t expect.”
“However, life goes on and I’m doing everything in my power to stay positive. All the support has meant the world.”
“I’ve cried more times this year than I have in my whole life.”
Prior to entering Casa Amour, Andrew was an estate agent in Dubai.
