Beer axed from shelves for ‘promoting knife crime’ after complaint to watchdog

A BEER brewed in honour of a master craftsman who created blades for famous names in history has been pulled from shelves over claims it was “promoting knife crime.”

Stan IPA, produced by Sheffield-based Little Mesters Brewery, was a tribute to Stan Shaw, the last of the city’s famed “little mesters” who made knives for the Royals, US presidents, and rock ‘n’ roll king Elvis.

But its brewers have been forced to ditch the ale after watchdogs upheld a complaint that it was glorifying knife violence.

The row erupted over its branding, which featured a cartoon of Stan holding one of his famous knives, alongside a tap handle shaped like a blade grip.

An anonymous complaint claimed the imagery could encourage booze-fuelled violence, particularly given Sheffield is currently grappling with rising knife crime.

Research revealed that within South Yorkshire, Sheffield is the most dangerous city, with a crime rate of 91 offences per 1,000 people.

The complaint, upheld by the Portman Group, argued: “Using a knife handle as a tap handle is perhaps a step too far and could encourage alcohol-related violence.”

Stan, who passed away aged 93 in 2021, was a legend of the Steel City.

Known as the last of Sheffield’s master craftsmen, his intricate knives were prized by Queen Elizabeth II, Elvis, and even US presidents.

In 2016, he became the first cutler to receive the British Empire Medal, recognising his unmatched contribution to Sheffield’s rich industrial history.

WATCHDOG’S VERDICT

The Independent Complaints Panel admitted Little Mesters’ aim was to honour a local hero, but ruled that the beer’s design breached rules by linking booze with violent behaviour.

The panel’s chairwoman, Rachel Childs, said: “Rising rates of knife crime in the UK—and particularly Sheffield, where this marketing appeared—generate a high level of public concern.

“Any depiction of knives on alcoholic packaging must be approached with great caution.”

Knife crime is a growing crisis in Britain.

Police recorded nearly 51,000 knife-related offences in the year to June 2024, an 80% rise in the past decade.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show knife-enabled crime has jumped 4% in the past year alone.

Sheffield has been hit hard, with frequent reports of stabbings, leaving locals on edge.

The panel said the beer’s pump clip made Stan’s knife “the central focus of the design,” with images of blades forming a circle around him.

They also noted the tap handle required punters to grip it “in a similar fashion as one might brandish a knife.”

Little Mesters Brewery hit back, saying the branding was a heartfelt tribute to Stan Shaw and Sheffield’s industrial heritage.

A spokesperson said: “We respect the decision made by the Portman Group and the important role they play in the industry.

“However, we do not agree that our branding, celebrating a master craftsman and the huge part he and other little mesters played in building industry in our fantastic city, in any way encourages antisocial behaviour or promotes knife crime.”

The brewery has now discontinued Stan IPA but remains adamant its intentions were never to glamourise violence.

Locals are divided over the decision. Some claim it’s a step too far, while others believe the brewery should’ve considered the sensitivities surrounding knife crime.

One Sheffield resident posted on Facebook: “Stan Shaw was a legend, and the beer was a brilliant way to honour him. But in a city plagued by knife violence, I can see why it’s caused a stir.”

But other locals were not happy about the decision.

A user posted: “This is absolutely ridiculous, a chuffing world we live in.”

Another added: “Long Live Stan, ignore any pathetic moron who puts 2 plus 2 and adds it up to 5 anything but 4.

“Unfortunately the world is full of people who (often) deliberately misconstrue things.”

A third sympathised with the brewery, commenting: “What an insane conclusion to draw from that label. Sorry you have to put up with these things.”

The complaint seems to have mustered a fair bit of controversy.

For now, Stan IPA has been consigned to history—just like the blades it was made to honour.

TROUBLE FOR BREWERS

Meanwhile, a major booze firm is set to slash the strength of one of its beers and drinkers will be left fuming.

The decision comes after drinks after the alcohol duty tax came into effect.

Brewers are also bracing for an upcoming change to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

EPR sees all of the estimated environmental costs associated with a product throughout its life cycle added to the price.

The first part of this, coming into effect later this year, is the Packaging Recovery Notes (PRN), which is rising from 37% to 100%.

A Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) is a document that proves packaging materials such as glass and aluminium have been recycled or recovered.

The change will see brewers producing packaged goods responsible for 100% of these fees.

Last week, The British Beer and Pub Association called on the UK government to reconsider the crippling costs of the EPR packaging scheme.

The association described the fees as “painful” and said the current estimates risk causing significant financial strain on the industry.

Pubs and brewers are also bracing themselves for an upcoming hike to employer National Insurance contributions (NICs).

Shock Emmerdale exit as star left devastated by soap axe

EMMERDALE has aired the shock exit of Wendy Posner in today’s episode after actress Susan Cookson was axed from the soap.

Viewers have watched this week as nurse Wendy suddenly found her time in the village coming to an end.

She was blackmailed by a local journalist over not being a real nurse and forced to spill secrets of her friends and neighbours.

As it all became too much she confessed to Liam and Manpreet at work – and they promptly sacked her.

Bob’s reaction was one of fury – with his missing granddaughter April being the subject of one of Wendy’s leaked stories.

And after splitting up with Bob, Wendy decided she needed a fresh start and told Victoria that she would be moving in with her son Luke in Manchester.

As she tried to slip away with a quiet goodbye, Liam and Manpreet arrived.

“I’m leaving actually,” she told them adding: “Me and Bob, things haven’t worked out too well there.”

Liam replied: “I wish you all the best, despite the circumstances. Thank you for being a friend and for lots of things.”

The three hugged while Wendy told them: “You look after yourself, you deserve to be happy.”

And then she said her goodbyes to Victoria, Cathy and Harry while Bob watched on silently.

Climbing into her car Wendy looked heartbroken to be leaving.

The Sun exclusively revealed how actress Susan had been left devastated by her exit after bosses axed her from the soap.

A source said: “Susan was devastated at the decision. She loves the show and loves being part of it.

“She’s really well liked in the cast but unfortunately budget cuts mean hard decisions need to be made and that resulted in Susan being one of a number of cast leaving.

“ITV is going through a cash crisis with the soaps and the money just isn’t there to pay for everyone any more.

Who was Natalie Clubb? Sex worker dismembered by Darren Adams and dumped in a Hull pumping station drain

SEX worker Natalie Clubb was killed and dismembered in 1998.

Here we take a look at the tragic events surrounding her murder featured in True Crime Presents Murder: The Tattoo Clue.

Who was Natalie Clubb?

Part of Natalie Clubb’s arm was discovered in a Hull pumping station drain in July 1998.

She had been reported missing two months earlier by her boyfriend Darren Adams from a public phone box.

She had a distinctive “Chaos” tattoo on her wrist, which was a crucial clue in identifying her body.

At first, the section of Natalie’s arm was all of her body that had been recovered.

The following day investigators found her head.

As the search continued, more parts of Natalie’s dismembered body were discovered.

They were all tied up separately in polythene bin liners and thrown into a drainage ditch.

Natalie’s murder was part of a series of sex worker deaths in Hull during the late 1990s, raising fears of a potential serial killer operating in the area.

Impact

It came just months after the murder of Samantha Class, whose badly beaten and strangled body washed up on the banks of the Humber River in October 1997, as well as Hayley Morgan, who died of a heroin overdose.

The discovery of Natalie’s body sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among sex workers who felt vulnerable and unprotected.

The police investigation into Natalie’s murder was led by Detective Chief Inspector Paul Davison.

Investigation

He faced the daunting task of piecing together clues from limited evidence.

Investigators had to navigate the often-secretive world of sex work, building trust with potential witnesses who were understandably wary of police involvement.

Forensic evidence gathered from the crime scenes, including the petrol station where Natalie was found, was meticulously analysed in hopes of uncovering the killer’s identity.

The murder squad also began by looking into Natalie’s background, which turned out to be a desperately sad story.

Darren Adams, the boyfriend who reported her missing on May 14, 1998, was also her pimp.

In the squalid house where the pair lived, he would wait for the johns she brought home and rob them armed with a baseball bat and knuckle dusters.

DCI Davison explained: “Darren Adams was obviously of interest to us but I thought it might be another prostitute murder.

“A man called Neil Pattison emerged as somebody close to Adams and Natalie.

“He actually owned the premises they lived in.

“He had a soft spot for Natalie but Pattison wasn’t an addict, which set him apart from most of the others we interviewed.

“Also, he was already arrested and charged and on remand for the vicious murder of an elderly lady during a robbery.”

Police officer Andy Marshall, who interviewed him in prison recalled: “I was surprised and shocked when he looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘Get me out of the prison, into police custody, and we’ll talk.’

“I spent some time trying to build a rapport with him and eventually, in the station interview room he said to me, ‘Darren served her up.’

“I wasn’t aware what he was referring to so I asked him what he meant and he said, ‘Darren stabbed her.’

In prison slang, being ‘served up’ is stabbing somebody.”

How to watch True Crime Presents Murder: The Tattoo Clue

True Crime Presents Murder: The Tattoo Clue provides an in-depth look into the events surrounding Natalie’s death.

You can catch the show on ITV at 9pm on Friday, January 17, 2024.

It will also be available to stream live and on catch-up on ITVX.

The Traitors in huge schedule shake-up as hit show moves timeslots to air bumper length finale

THE TRAITORS is set to deliver a thrilling conclusion next week, with a significant timeslot shift to accommodate the drama.

Fans will finally find out whether the Traitors or Faithfuls will take home this year’s cash prize

This follows a game-changing episode last week that saw the series rip up the rulebook and introduce a shocking new twist.

Instead of the usual nighttime murder, the two remaining Traitors were tasked with executing a “murder in plain sight”.

After Dan’s banishment, the duo received a letter revealing there would be no murder that night.

Instead, they were instructed to complete a covert task within the castle.

Linda and Minah had to find a peacock quill and use it to write the names of four fellow players on a painting.

Their chosen targets, Alexander, Anna, Fozia, and Leon, were then whisked away in the dead of night to face a chilling challenge.

Claudia Winkleman was waiting for the four players at a cemetery with a high-stakes card game called Deathmatch.

Each participant had two cards, but only one was the coveted ‘life card’.

Through a tense exchange of cards, Anna and Alexander secured their safety, leaving Fozia and Leon to battle it out.

Ultimately Fozia met her end in the game, which RadioTimes have reported she felt “disappointed” by.

She added: “It was a game of chance, and it could have been any one of us that night.”

After Linda’s recent banishment which saw her admit “I’m not as good a liar as I thought,” there is only one Traitor remaining in the castle.

The upcoming finale promises to reveal whether the Faithfuls can unmask Minah, or if she will outsmart them all and walk away with the cash prize in the end.
