Car giants pushing for Government to soften tough net zero rules

CAR giants believe they are close to convincing the Government to soften some of its tough net zero rules.

Representatives from JLR, Ford, Vauxhall-owner Stellantis and Nissan met Transport Minister Heidi Alexander yesterday amid fears of more factory closures and job losses.

The Government launched an “urgent” eight-week consultation on its zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate on Christmas Eve — and there are now less than ten days left.

The ZEV scheme requires car makers to have 28 per cent of their sales come from electric vehicles by the end of this year and have phased out petrol cars by 2030 or face hefty fines.

Stellantis has blamed the ZEV mandate for the closure of Vauxhall’s Luton plant, even though the car maker met its 22 per cent target last year through heavy discounting.

Vauxhall yesterday confirmed that the Luton site will stop production between April and June, with the loss of 1,100 jobs.

The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders said yesterday that despite selling 41.6 per cent more electric vehicles in January than a year ago, the industry is still well short of the 28 per cent target.

The cost of transitioning car production to green power had been the driving force between Japanese car giants Nissan and Honda engaging in $60billion shock merger talks last year.

But yesterday it emerged the deal to create the world’s third largest car maker was in danger of breaking down after Nissan refused terms.

Car manufacturers are now pushing the Government to ignite consumer demand with incentives to buy electric vehicles, such as lower VAT or lower charging costs.

PRESIDENT’S TRADE BARBS

LIFE in plastic is not so fantastic with Trump tariffs, warns Barbie maker Matel.

The US toy giant has put their President Barbie — from the 2023 film — up against the the real-life one, following fears about supply chains.

President Trump, shown as a rival manufacturer’s doll above, has already put 10 per cent tariffs on China, where Mattel makes 40 per cent of its products.

Mattel said it would try to relocate some of its factories, but boss Ynon Kreiz added: “Pricing action is also one of the options we’re looking at.”

Tariffs on Mexico and Canada are also planned, though delayed until March.

COST’S NO PLUS

DISNEY has lost 700,000 of its customers after raising the cost of its streaming service.

The House of Mouse still counts 125million Disney+ users, but saw a fall after hiking a standard subscription in the UK by £1 to £8.99.

But the price jump, paired with a crackdown on password sharing helped push the platform to a £234million quarterly profit, after a £111million loss last year.

Overall, the firm saw its revenues rise by 5 per cent to £19.6billion — partly aided by Moana 2’s box office success.

THE Bank of England is expected to lower interest rates today from the current 4.75 per cent to 4.5 per cent.

Banks use the rate to set interest on mortgages. Inflation has eased to 2.5 per cent while there are concerns about the economy’s growth.

SERVICES JOB CUT

FIRMS in the services sector, the UK’s biggest industry, cut jobs at the fastest rate in four years, a survey has found.

Tim Moore of market experts S&P GLOBAL said: “Shrinking workloads and rising payroll costs meant service providers put the brakes on recruiting in January.”

The S&P Global UK services PMI survey scored 50.8 in January, down from 51.1 in December and the lowest for 15 months.

A poll of 1,500 firms by bank HSBC found 39 per cent are already raising prices in anticipation of higher tariffs.

FEARS OF JOBS AXE AT BANK

SANTANDER yesterday ruled out plans to offload its banking operations in Britain — but suggested that more job cuts could be on the way.

Global chairman Ana Botín said the “retail UK bank is not up for sale”, but suggested the Spanish-based firm could “reallocate capital” to more profitable countries or areas.

The group yesterday said it expected to transform the UK arm through “simplification and automation to drive cost efficiencies in 2025”.

Analysts suggested this would mean more ruthless layoffs on top of the 1,400 jobs axed last October.

Santander’s UK chair William Vereker stepped down last week amid speculation about the British arm’s direction.

The UK has been a headache for the global bank, having to put £295million to cover the motor finance scandal even as its pre-tax profits fell 38 per cent to £1.3billion.

A JAB AT SUCCESS

DRUG giant GSK gave investors a shot in the arm yesterday — launching a £2billion share buyback, while boosting its sales forecasts.

The vaccine maker says it is now on track to make £40billion in revenues by 2031 after its progress on new potential blockbuster drugs.

Sales last year rose by 7 per cent to £31.4billion — but profits dropped by over a third due to a US lawsuit. Shares jumped by 7.46 per cent to £14.83.

Sir Keir Starmer set to give go-ahead to small nuclear reactors to power MILLIONS of homes

SMALL nuclear reactors to power millions of homes will get the go-ahead — as the PM vowed to stare down the “blockers”.

The Government is putting growth ahead of locals’ concerns and reforms will see more projects approved, creating thousands of jobs.

Rules will be relaxed to allow the small modular reactors to be built on more sites than currently permitted, with no planning expiry date.

Britain’s last reactor, Sizewell B, was built in 1995. Sir Keir Starmer said: “We’ve been let down, and left behind.

“Our energy security has been hostage to Putin, with UK prices sky-rocketing at his whims.

“I’m putting an end to it and saying ‘No’ to the blockers who have strangled our chances of cheaper energy, growth and jobs for far too long.”

Britain’s five nuclear stations, which power 13 million homes, are all nearing the end of their lives.

Only Hinkley Point C, Somerset, is being built — after a 30,000-page eco assessment to get planning permission.

China is building 29 reactors and the EU has 12 in planning stages.

Urgent warning as one in five people now have diabetes or pre-diabetes linked to diet, say experts

ONE in five people now have diabetes or pre-diabetes in a “hidden health crisis” linked to obesity and junk food, experts warn.

The charity Diabetes UK said cases are at an all-time high.

About half of cases of type 2 diabetes are caused by being overweight or obese[/caption]

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type and is a leading cause of strokes and heart diseases in the UK, with patients also at risk of blindness and leg amputations.

Analysis of NHS figures found that 4.6million adults in Britain are officially diagnosed with diabetes – compared to 3.8m in 2018.

Another 1.3m are estimated to be unaware they have the condition.

And 6.3m are believed to have non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, also known as pre-diabetes.

This is a condition where blood sugar levels are high and someone is very likely to develop type 2 diabetes in future.

In total, the figures suggest 12.1m people are affected.

Colette Marshall, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: “These latest figures highlight the hidden health crisis we’re facing in the UK.

“The Government must act now.

“There must be better care for the millions of people living with all types of diabetes, to support them to live well and fend off the risk of devastating complications.

“It’s also critical that more is done to find the missing millions who either have type 2 diabetes or prediabetes but are completely unaware of it.”

About half of cases of type 2 diabetes are caused by being overweight or obese.

Obesity rates have roughly doubled for women and tripled for men since the 1990s.

Lazy lifestyles, unhealthy diets and a family history of the condition all also raise the risk of type 2 diabetes.

It prevents the pancreas from making enough insulin, meaning the body cannot digest sugar properly, so it builds up in the blood.

Over time this can damage blood vessels, internal organs and nerves.

Many people do not have symptoms for years, but signs can include feeling thirsty, needing to pee a lot and tiredness.

Figures found 4.6million adults in Britain are officially diagnosed with diabetes – compared to 3.8m in 2018[/caption]

Diabetes UK outlined the growing danger in a letter to the Government, urging them to make it a key feature of their 10-year NHS plan.

It warns the illness is a “gateway to other serious health issues” and could cost the NHS £18billion a year by 2035.

Find out ways to lower your type 2 diabetes risk below…

How to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes

According to Diabetes UK, there are a few diet tweaks you can make to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes:

  1. Choose drinks without added sugar – skip out the sugar in your tea and coffee and stay away from fizzy and energy drinks
  2. Eat whole grains such as brown rice, wholewheat pasta, wholemeal flour, wholegrain bread and oats instead of refined carbs
  3. Cut down on red and processed meat like bacon, ham, sausages, pork, beef and lamb
  4. Eat plenty of fruit and veg – apples, grapes, berries, and green leafy veg such as spinach, kale, watercress, and rocket have been associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes
  5. Have unsweetened yoghurt and cheese
  6. Cut down on booze – and have a few days a week with none at all
  7. Have healthy snacks like unsweetened yoghurt, unsalted nuts, seeds and fruit and veg
  8. Eat healthy fats included in nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil
  9. Cut down on salt
  10. Get your vitamins and minerals from food instead of tablets

SUN ART (2.55 Huntingdon, nap).

She hasn’t done a lot wrong in two spins over hurdles with a debut third at Market Rasen followed by a much closer podium placing at Southwell last time. The handicapper has been fair with an opening mark of 108 and a speed track like this should be ideal. She won’t need a lot more to get off the mark under Jonathan Burke.

ROCKOLA VOGUE (3.55 Doncaster, nb)

Has shown her best around this trip with a win at Hexham on just her second run over timber. The drop back to two miles wasn’t ideal at Wetherby last time but she was still an excellent second and moves back up in trip here. She’s another who looks fairly handicapped.

MISS GOLDFIRE (3.30 Huntingdon, treble)

Finished strongly when second over 2m4f at Wincanton last time only for the line to come too soon. Moving up half a mile here looks a wise move and she can score.

Five ways to save on an engagement ring this Valentine’s Day

VALENTINE’S Day is one of the most popular days to propose – and it is just around the corner.

If you’re feeling the love, you might be looking for a sparkler to seal the engagement.

A diamond ring isn’t cheap but there are ways to save . . .

MORE IS LESS: A ring with more diamonds can actually be a more affordable option.

Fine jeweller Poppy Elder says: “A single large diamond can be very expensive but choosing a design with multiple smaller diamonds gives a similar look for much less.

“For example, a trilogy ring with three diamonds totalling 1ct will be significantly cheaper than a single 1ct diamond.”

COMPROMISE: Diamonds are typically priced by their colour and clarity.

But you don’t need to go for the highest and most expensive grades to get a beautiful stone.

Poppy says: “Most people aim for D-F, which is the whitest diamond and very valuable. But G-H diamonds, costing significantly less, still appear white to the naked eye.”

A flawless sparkler is the priciest option, whereas looking at stones with VS2 clarity will give you a clear-looking diamond without unnecessary cost.

HAGGLE: Don’t be afraid — you have nothing to lose by trying to knock a little off the price. You are more likely to find that smaller and independent jewellers have more ability to negotiate on price than big-name brands.

DIAMOND DUPE: Moissanite is a cheaper alternative. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference.

They are just as sparkling as diamonds but are more prone to scratches as they are less hard.

You can pick up moissanite rings for around £200.

DO IT TOGETHER: Avoid splashing out large sums on a ring your partner doesn’t like.

Poundland has some fab £1 stand-in rings that you can use to pop the question before working out the style together.

Cristiano Ronaldo given incredible birthday cake by Al-Nassr complete with childhood pics and all 5 of his Ballons d’Or

CRISTIANO RONALDO reckons no other player can hold a candle to him.

And he can also wax lyrical about his 40th birthday cake – thanks to a majestic creation from Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo‘s Saudi club served up a triple-tier offering, laced with three truly special extras.

In front of the cake sat five tasty Ballons d’Or, looking golden delicious.

Embedded around it was a touching selection of childhood pictures.

And perched on top was a mini version of the legend himself, performing the type of overhead kick that rekindled memories of the cream of his 923 goals (and counting).

Al-Nassr posted snaps of the beaming ex-Manchester United frontman gazing down at the carb-crammed construction – something that health-conscious Ronaldo might normally avoid.

They added the words: “Happiness looks good on him.”

Team-mates like new £64million striker Jhon Duran crowded alongside CR7 in other photos.

And as supporters responded to the pics with a stream of good wishes to the Portugal great, Ron also shared his verdict on the big day.

The ex-Real Madrid hero posted a cosy picture with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez and said: “Thank you all for the amazing birthday messages!

“Had a great day with family and friends, couldn’t wish for anything better.”

Ron has also revealed in interviews this week that he believes playing on “a year, or two, or three” is still possible.

But as he reached what many regard as a landmark birthday, he appeared to be more philosophical about his future on the pitch.

CR7 claimed he “doesn’t care” how long his playing career lasts.

He suggested too he’s relaxed about whether he bags the 77 more strikes needed to make four figures.

He said: “If I reach 1,000 goals, great. If not, that’s fine too. Numbers don’t lie.”

Ronaldo won the Champions League four times, all with Real, plus La Liga twice, three Prem crowns with United and Serie A on a couple of occasions with Juventus.

And as represented by his Ballons d’Or cake accessories, he was also named world player of the year five times.

So, at least in terms of honours, he’s the perfect antidote to the argument that life begins at 40.

But he’s certainly chosen the moment to serve up some strife – for those who like a heated debate.

Ronaldo stirred up the eternal question of “Who is the GOAT?” by again insisting he’s “the best player ever”.

He added: “I’m fast, I’m strong, [I score] with my head, with the left, no one has ever been more complete than me.

Team-mates enjoyed the moment almost as much as Ron[/caption]

“You may prefer PeleLionel Messi and Diego Maradona, I understand and respect that…. I am the best in history. Period.”

So whatever Al-Nassr or anyone gave Ron for his birthday, it surely won’t beat perhaps the greatest gift of all – his sense of fulfilment.

Joao Felix scores stunning goal just 12 minutes into AC Milan debut as fans say ‘we can now agree Chelsea ruins players’

JOAO FELIX took just 12 minutes to score his first AC Milan goal following his loan transfer from Chelsea.

The 25-year-old completed a move to Italy on deadline day.

Felix chipped the ball over the Roma goalkeeper to put Milan through to the Coppa Italia semi-finals[/caption]

Just five months ago Chelsea paid £45m to sign him from Atletico Madrid.

However, Felix was down the pecking order under Enzo Maresca and managed seven goals in 20 appearances, many of which came in the Europa Conference League.

The Blues subsequently loaned him out to AC Milan, who paid a £5million loan fee with no obligation to buy.

But the Serie A might be thinking it was some shrewd business after Felix scored an important goal to put them in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.

With the score 2-1 in Milan’s favour, Felix was introduced in the 59th minute as a replacement for Christian Pulisic.

The Portuguese forward was then played into open space in the 71st minute by fellow deadline-day signing Santiago Gimenez.

Felix then proceeded to calmly chip the ball over Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar to make the score 3-1 and mark a perfect debut for himself and Gimenez – a £27m buy from Feyenoord.

Reacting on social media, some fans were critical of Chelsea’s handling of Felix, with one saying: “We can now agree Chelsea ruins players.”

JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS

A second said: “Chelsea has ALWAYS ruined players, they were the club that would buy players so other teams couldn’t and then sit them on the bench.”

A third added: “Chelsea almost ruined him.”

Another fan argued it was a motivation issue, saying: “He’s motivated for the first few games and then it will drop.”

A fifth fan said: “They should make his move there permanent.”

Felix did also manage to score for Chelsea on his second debut for them this season during the 6-2 thrashing of Wolves, before failing to score another league goal.

Milan have been joined in the semi-finals by Bologna, while two of Inter Milan or Lazio and Juventus or Empoli will make up the rest of the last four.

The final will be held on May 14, where the Rossoneri will be hoping to win the competition for their sixth time overall and the first time since 2003.

Horrifying moment emergency services desperately try to save rugby players life on pitch after cardiac arrest

YORKSHIRE Air 999 saw a horrifying moment occur where emergency services desperately tried to save a rugby players life on the pitch, following a cardiac arrest.

It happened after a routine rugby session took a terrible turn as 48-year-old coach Lee Garside collapsed and faced the threat of a cardiac arrest.

Luckily, the air ambulance crew were able to arrive in a rapid response vehicle in just four minutes[/caption]

The Air Ambulance crew rushed to save him, after his teammates called 999 from the scene in Yorkshire.

They said over the phone before the ambulance arrived: “He’s collapsed, and he’s passed out…I’m doing CPR on him right now as we’re talking.

Luckily, the air ambulance crew were able to arrive in a rapid response vehicle in just four minutes.

Updating them on the situation, Lee’s teammates said: “‘He’s been in and out of consciousness, and (his) breathing keeps stopping.”

The air ambulance crew are seen doing five shocks with the defibrillator, and spend ten minutes trying to revive Lee through CPR.

And they were successful in their mission, after swift action and a return of spontaneous circulation.

The harrowing scene is captured on the sixth episode of Yorkshire Air 999, which airs on Friday 7 February at 9pm on Really.

As they took Lee to hospital, the paramedics warned that he wasn’t “out of the woods,” adding: “He’s had a really serious event and it’s still ongoing at that point. Patients will re-arrest on you, so I’m mindful of that with Lee on this occasion.”

And just before they arrive at the hospital, Lee starts seizing, with crew believing it was down to lack of oxygen to his brain during the cardiac arrest.

Luckily for Lee, upon arrival at the hospital the crash team were waiting and he was fitted with an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator).

Just eight weeks after, Lee experienced another cardiac arrest while watching TV, and he said when speaking about it after recovering: “My heart started going to one side, and it just gave me a massive, massive kick.”

On the show, Lee gets emotional as he thanks everyone for their life-saving efforts.

He added: “Without them guys I probably wouldn’t have been here today.”
