UK weather: Met office warns SNOW could fall today as Britain hit by -2C plunge with EIGHT cold health alerts in place

THE Met Office has warned snow grains could fall TODAY as temperatures plunged to an icy -2C overnight – with eight cold health alerts in place.

Brits have been urged to brace for plummeting figures again, while the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued fresh yellow alerts.

They cover the North East, North West and East of England, Yorkshire and The Humber, as well as the East and West Midlands.

Those in London and the South East are also under warning and set to be affected.

Officials stated areas under caution can expect “minor impacts on health and social care services”.

These include “increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people” and “greater risk to life of vulnerable people.”

The warning is more stark for Yorkshire and The Humber, with the region being warned of “potential significant impacts” across health and care services.

This includes a risk of a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, as well as potential impacts on younger age groups.

All warnings came into effect on January 17 at 6pm and will end at 9am on January 21.

The UKHSA has also warned that there is likely to be an increase in demand for health services and impacts on the workforce affecting delivery of services in the northern area.

It also highlighted challenges the temperatures could pose to keeping indoor conditions at the recommended 18C, which could therefore increase the risk for vulnerable people.

It comes as the Met Office forecast snow grains may fall across the south today.

Snow grains are a very small form of solid precipitation that appear like tiny opaque grans of rice.

Elsewhere forecasters announced it will remain cloudy in most parts of the UK, with some sunny spells over higher ground.

There will be patches of rain and drizzle for most.

While mild temperatures are expected in the north, figures are set to drop in the south.

The Met Office warned of “significant change” to weather over the weekend, with temperatures expected to plummet to as low as -3C.

Conditions in parts of Northumberland and County Durham are expected to fall below freezing on Saturday night.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said that while dry weather is set to arrive this weekend, temperatures are expected to drop slightly.

He said this is being caused by colder air coming in from Europe, with temperatures dropping “relatively low” as early as Friday night.

Alex added: “Many places in England and Wales will drop close to freezing, with some areas going below.”

While the forecast did say a “bit more” sunshine will arrive on Saturday, this will primarily be for northern areas.

This comes after the Met Office issued a fog warning earlier on Friday amid “tricky conditions”.

UK 5 day weather forecast

Today
Rather cloudy, though some bright or sunny spells, mainly over and to the north of high ground. Some patchy rain and drizzle in places, and perhaps snow grains in the south. Mild in the north, chilly in the south.

Tonight
Another cloudy night, though clear spells developing in the north and west. Patchy rain and drizzle, and a risk of snow grains, in the south. Turning chilly under clear skies.

Sunday
A cloudy day, with outbreaks of rain in the far west slowly easing. A continued risk of drizzle and snow grain in the south where cloud is thick enough. Chilly.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday
A cloudy outlook through the start of the new working week, with showery rain spreading erratically eastwards. Temperatures generally around average in the north, but chilly further south.

It comes after major incidents were declared earlier this month after heavy snowfall and “severe” flooding.

The Environment Agency issued over 300 flooding alerts while four UK airports were forced to cancel and delay flights amid runway closures.

Hundreds of school were also forced to closed for days during the chaos.

Elsewhere, firefighters in Leicestershire rescued 59 people while the body of a man was recovered from an area of flooding in North Yorkshire.

My rotting & mouldy house nearly killed my baby – now housing association want to charge me £600 a MONTH to fix it

A DAD’S rotting and mouldy home nearly killed his baby – and the housing association wants to charge him £600 a month to fix it.

Fuming Rhys Nicol said his three-month-old son Azair was so sick he was “throwing up green”.

The tot was then diagnosed with Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – a potentially fatal chest infection.

Dad-of-one Rhys, 18, said his home in Attleborough, Norfolk, is so mouldy the windowsills and walls are covered in “blacky-green fur and spots” and the bathroom has “red dots” all over it.

However, his biggest concern was finding his baby’s mattress and nursery were “smothered” in mould.

“The mould patch was bigger than my baby,” he told the Sun.

Rhys says he requested a dehumidifier from housing association Places for People twice between October and December to no avail.

“I sent them evidence of my 83 per cent humidity levels but I never got anything,” he explained.

Rhys then forked out £700 to buy a dehumidifier and air purifier himself.

“I’m pulling 24 litres of water a day and we’ve lost 2 grand worth of stuff,” said the young dad.

The family have now been moved to temporary accommodation an hour away in Cromer, Norfolk, while they wait for the housing association to solve the problem.

It meant they spent Christmas away from loved ones.

He added: “It was the first one my mum would have spent with her grandson.”

Rhys informed the housing association he had contacted his local MP George Freeman – and told them he wanted to move.

He said they responded by eventually giving him two dehumidifiers.

ELECTRICITY BILL

Rhys’ torment was further compounded when he found his electricity bill was £627 in January, “because the dehumidifiers are there”.

Rhys said that the bill is usually £139.

He said: “It’s affected my credit rating, but I can’t shell out that much when I’m not there.

“The wall around the mould goes a grey watercolour. They’re on the windowsills up the walls, in our bedroom, in the nursery.”

Rhys explained that he didn’t notice the mould initially due to the bottom sheet and mattress protector.

“When we went to do a deep clean, it was absolutely covered,” he continued.

“It went through a waterproof fabric, through the wood, the mattress and back onto the mattress topper. That mould was bigger than the size of our baby. It was scary.”

The child was just four weeks old at the time.

Rhys took his son to the doctor after the baby when his vomit turned green.

“A week later we went back because his breathing was getting worse,” he explained.

“He had an awful cough and they said ‘we think it’s bronchitis’.”

Rhys said he showed the GP a picture of the mould in his home and they said “that’s why and he has developed RSV”.

He added: “My child is two months old and he’s not well.”

Prior to the move to Cromer, he said Places for People offered him temporary accommodation in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire – around two hours away.

“I said I’m not going to move my life to another county and back,” Rhys said.

He said the housing association has offered to compensate him for “everything damaged”, including clothes, the sofa and a mattress – but only if he “rips everything up first”.

The Sun has approached Places for People for comment.

Brit man stabbed partner 7 times in the back ‘after she called him a cheat’ in vicious killing at Italian home

A BRIT who admitted to stabbing his partner seven times in the back has after she claimed him a “cheat”.

Michael Whitbread, 75, confessed to the chilling crime at their secluded cottage in rural Italy, tried to blame his partner’s accusations for the gruesome killing.

The horror killing of Michele Faiers, 66, unfolded in October 2023 at their home in Verratti, in the central region of Abruzzo.

Her body was found by a concerned friend, who alerted authorities after not hearing from her for several days.

The grandmother had been stabbed multiple times in the back, and her body was discovered lying in a pool of blood, covered with a white sheet.

Whitbread fled the scene after the killing, reportedly driving 1,259 miles through Switzerland and France before arriving at his daughter’s home in the UK.

He was arrested in Shepshed, Leicestershire, on suspicion of murder and remained in custody as the trial continued in Italy.

Whitbread, who had moved to Italy with Michele in 2015 after selling their scuba diving school in Torquay, claimed in court that he was driven to violence after months of accusations that he had an affair.

“I stabbed her, I don’t remember how many times,” Whitbread confessed, describing the escalating tensions in their relationship, reports The Times.

The former diving instructor said Michele accused him of having an affair after she allegedly saw him patting another woman’s bottom at a New Year’s Eve party in 2022.

Whitbread, who denied the accusations, claimed the ongoing rows turned violent.

“It was an odd clip round the head, then it got worse,” he told the court.

Whitbread however has been accused by another witness of being abusive to Michele – with a friend revealing he once allegedly left her covered in bruises after a row.

And her family have accused the self-confessed killer of trying to shift the blame for his crimes.

The family lawyer, Nadia Germana Tascona, acknowledged Whitbread’s confession but rejected his claims of provocation.

“Based on the evidence, obviously not,” she said when asked if Whitbread was the victim of bullying.

“We don’t believe things went the way he described them.”

Michele's brother Norman

Michele’s brother, Norman, 73, dismissed Whitbread’s claims as an attempt to shift blame.

“He is obviously trying to paint my sister as some kind of banshee, but that isn’t true.

“She was a mother, a grandmother, a vibrant woman. And he was a weak, weak man. There is no excuse for what he did. It was violent, it was murder.”

Her sister, Trina, 63, said their elderly mother, aged 96, was devastated.

“She had a good relationship with Michael. All of us did. We trusted him, and he murdered Michele — and she did nothing wrong.”

On the night of October 28, 2023, Whitbread said Michele woke him, hitting him and saying: “I wish you were dead.”

He alleged she kicked him and tried to push him down the stairs before he grabbed a knife in panic.

“She kicked me in the intimate parts and was trying to push me down the stairs. I thought: she’s going to cut me. That is when I grabbed the knife in panic,” he claimed.

Michele was found lying on her bed with seven stab wounds to her back.

Whitbread then fled the scene, driving back to the UK.

British police, tipped off by his daughter, tracked him down, leading to his extradition to Italy and the start of his trial in November 2023.

A psychiatric evaluation presented by his defence described Whitbread as sociable but prone to depression, irritability, and obsessive behaviour.

Psychiatrist Raffaele de Leonardis said: “I believe this crime was the result of a psychiatric illness.”

She told police that Michele had stayed at her home in early October 2023 after Whitbread allegedly beat her during a row, leaving her covered in bruises.

“She hit me and I had to defend myself. That is where the marks came from,” Whitbread said in court, denying he had assaulted Michele.

Michele’s three daughters attended the hearing, holding each other as Whitbread described the killing.

The presiding judge has ordered a psychological study of Whitbread as the trial continues.
