Why January transfer window is the WORST time for Premier League clubs with just one in five signings a success

HALF-WAY though the winter window.

And like the UK economy, the transfer market appears to be stalling.

Even by the standards of a normal quiet January, this month, so far, has been about the things that haven’t happened.

Marcus Rashford has still not left Manchester United. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah remain at Anfield. Arsenal appear to be mulling the striker signing Emirates fans have demanded for two years.

Indeed, more than a fortnight after the window opened, Prem clubs had signed paid money for just six players between them, with Aston Villa’s £19m recruitment of Dortmund’s Donyell Malen representing nearly a third of the total £68m outlay.

Of course, Manchester City could change everything if the proposed triple swoop for Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush, Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Palmeiras teenager Vitor Reis materialises.

But City, from a position of relative strength and able to get a few wrong, are an exception.

And while there have been some stunning deals in the winter window – imagine Liverpool without Virgil van Dijk over the past seven years – there are far more misses and maybes than hits.

Over the last five January windows, Prem sides have splashed out £785m.

There have been around 126 major signings. And of them, arguably only 26, just one in five, can be described as unqualified successes.

JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS

Indeed, one of the biggest successes of this season was also one of the most obvious January failures.

Chris Wood’s annus mirabilis has seen the Kiwi score 13 in 21 Prem appearances for Forest.

Yet had you asked the Newcastle fans who watched Wood arrive as a £25m part of the first Saudi-backed recruitment drive in 2022 and subsequently score just four in 35 Prem games, they would have happily driven him to Nottingham themselves.

The ones that have been good deals do stand out from the pack.

Bruno Fernandes is now captain of Manchester United, scoring another beauty in the FA Cup win over Arsenal on Sunday.

Luis Diaz is a key part of Liverpool’s attacking armoury, alongside Cody Gakpo.

Dejan Kulusevski has been one of the few bright sparks in a bleak mid-winter at Spurs.

Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn are major reasons in Newcastle’s astonishing recent run, while Wolves’ Mateus Cunha has no end of suitors.

But for every Morgan Rogers and Martin Odegaard, there are four or five flops, men who came and went like footprints on a tidal beach.

Who, aside from real club nerds, can remember Gedson Fernandes, Morgan Sansom or Valentino Lazaro? Who wants to recall Marcel Sabitzer or Arnaut Danjuma?

In the PSR  era, when the numbers have to add up, taking a gamble and getting it wrong is a mistake clubs cannot afford to make.

And if only one in five January deals are likely to pay off, perhaps that’s why clubs do not want to be burned.

EastEnders actor defends rival soap amid budget cuts and cast exodus as he predicts Coronation Street’s future

EASTENDERS star Jamie Borthwick has defended rival soap Coronation Street amid a crisis on the cobbles.

The ITV soap has been mired in troubles with multiple actors quitting or being axed from the show, a cash crisis at ITV and fan revolts.

Now Jamie, who is appearing in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing live tour, has opened up about EastEnders success – and why Corrie will be back on top soon.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, he said: “I feel like with the soaps, they all have peaks and troughs.

“They all have moments of up, moments of down. You’re going to get that with longevity. But that’s one thing that they have is longevity.

“How long has Corrie been on? 62 years I think.

“It’s an amazing show. It’s an institution. And I feel like to be a part of that institution – and obviously EastEnders joined a lot later and what we’ve achieved in our 40 years.

“And they’re amazing shows and they’re in the fabric of the country.”

He added: “I feel like they always will have a place there.

“But as I say, peaks and troughs. We’re on a good run and have been for a while. I’m sure we’ll go back round the other way and that’s just how it goes with longevity.

“It’s one thing that they have over many other genres that have been going forever.

“Listen, Corrie’s an amazing show, it’s brilliant and the people on it are great.”

The kind comments will no doubt come as a relief to Corrie bosses as they cope with the on-going crisis.

This comes after Sally Ann Matthews, who plays Jenny Bradley on the ITV soap Coronation Street, said that ITV is struggling financially.

Amid this, some soap fans reckon that if it comes down to it, ITV would axe Emmerdale in a bid to save the Manchester-based soap opera.

Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025

ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap.

This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama.

Colson Smith – Craig Tinker

The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig’s on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role.

Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw

After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I’m A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she’s already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future.

Luca Toolan – Mason Radcliffe

Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him.

Sue Devaney – Debbie Webster

In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline.

Charlotte Jordan – Daisy Midgeley

The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she’s hungry to see what other opportunities await.

Shelley King – Yasmeen Metcalfe

The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.

“If it came down to it, ITV would sacrifice Emmerdale to save Corrie,” one fan penned in a soap forum.

“Emmerdale would go first as the sacrificial lamb,” said another.

Cross, 34, landed hit two more 180s and average higher than Nebrida but struggled on the doubles, missing the chance to wrap up a leg 16 times.

Nebrida, 30, sealed the win in spectacular fashion by hitting the double top.

He coolly lifted his arm in celebration and embraced Cross as the two exchanged friendly words at the oche.

The defeat is the latest low point for Cross, who is on a four-match losing run.

He was knocked out the World Championship by Scott Williams in his first match at Alexandra Palace.

Drones replacing first responders as they race to emergency scenes in 85 secs in first-of-its-kind program

BRAND new drone technology will replace first responders in the rush to get to emergency scenes at a moment’s notice.

Hempstead Police Department, an hour’s drive from New York City on Long Island, is implementing automatic drones, which boast an average response time of just 85 seconds.

Flock Safety, a tech company focused on public safety, is providing the department’s new drone-as-first responder system, which will be the company’s first program in New York.

The drones will be stationed at docks across the city, where they’ll be prepared to deploy anywhere within a four-mile radius in under two minutes.

The drones can immediately get eyes on emergencies and service calls, which creates safer and more efficient cases for responding officers.

“Drone-as-first-responder programs will play a central role in the future of public safety, speeding emergency response, de-escalating dangerous situations, and getting to closed cases faster,” Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley said in a press release.

“No other technology helps law enforcement officers get eyes on the scene faster than a drone.”

The new system will work alongside HPD’s existing license plate reader and video cameras, also installed by Flock.

The LPR cameras can help locate stolen vehicles, known wanted offenders, and missing people.

The cameras will speed response times by reporting the recorded information to drone dispatch.

All of the systems are streamlined through the city’s real-time information center.

“Hempstead PD has long been at the forefront of high-tech policing,” Police Chief Richard Holland said.

“We’re excited to see the public safety benefits this game-changing DFR system will bring to our village.”

Flock Safety’s tech is used in over 5,000 communities across the country, the company says on its website.

The intelligent platform can be used by cities, businesses, schools, and police to stop crime.

Austin, Texas, installed 40 of Flock’s license plate reader cameras across their city last year.

Flock Safety's new program

Hempstead Police Department on Long Island, New York, is using a new drone program to respond to emergency scenes.

The drone-as-first-responder system was designed to respond to emergencies and call for service quickly and more safely.

The DFR system is the first program in New York by Flock Safety, which provides public safety technology.

The Flock Aerodrome DFR system puts drones at automated, battery-swapping docks across Hempstead.

The drones can reach anywhere within a four-mile radius to get eyes on the scene.

The system has an average response time of 85 seconds.

The program goes hand in hand with HPD’s existing license plate readers and video cameras, also installed by Flock.

The Austin Police Department said the tech helped them catch multiple criminals at a meeting in October – but the cameras still caused a stir among residents.

Drivers raised questions about privacy, data retention, and discrimination caused by the technology.

Residents also showed concern about the number of “false positive stops.”

False positive stops would include cops pulling over people because the tech misread a license plate.

In September of last year, the Texas Department of Public Safety also ordered Flock Safety to stop operating in private homes and businesses when the company failed to obtain a private investigator’s license.

Flock Safety hasn’t returned The U.S. Sun’s request for comment.

I’ve been married to a complete con artist for 35 years

Woman looking overwhelmed while holding a letter.
null

DEAR DEIDRE: THE wedge of love letters and sexually explicit notes from an array of different women gave me all the evidence I needed. I had been married to a complete con artist for 35 years.

I’ve been taken for a fool and I’m so angry with myself for believing all the lies, tricks and manipulations.

I’m 60, he’s 66, and we have two sons together.

From the very beginning he was very intense and sold me the world.

Looking back, all the signs were always there.

There was a recurring pattern: he’d grow distant and start spending less time at home, I’d confront him about it, he’d reassure me that there was nothing to worry about, and then he’d pull a few grand romantic gestures to make the peace.

For years I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster with constant ups and downs.

I knew deep down something was amiss, but he always managed to manipulate and gaslight me into believing I was wrong.

Everything really began to spiral ten years ago when he stopped having sex with me altogether. He claimed he was struggling with erectile dysfunction and had lost all desire for intimacy.

I had spent so long convincing myself that I was being delusional until I discovered the letters dating back years in his bedside table. I was gobsmacked.

When I confronted him, it was as if something snapped and his facade finally disappeared.

I’d never seen such rage and hatred in all my life. He told me he’d never loved me and had been using me all along.

Now he’s left me for another woman, and I’m devastated.

Paul played bad boy Sol Patrick from 1997 to 2001 on Hollyoaks and was later known for his reality TV appearances, including on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island.

While Paul had taken a backseat from television for the past number of years, he was set to return to screens.

He had signed up for a role in a new gritty drama called Bloody Love that’s currently in pre-production according to film site IMDb.

A synopsis for the unreleased project reads: “A group of teen friends are devastated when a friend is murdered.

“1 yr later the case is unsolved. Suspicion falls on each of them.

“Secrets are revealed and the net falls tighter on the murderer.”

Paul was set to play the character of Brian, though there’s no more details of his role.

He was due to star alongside actors such as Dean Kilbey, Poppie Boyes, Alison Carroll and Donna Taylor.

Paul Danan has died aged just 46 – here’s a look back at his life…

Following Paul’s death, a statement from Avon and Somerset Police said: “Officers attended a property in Brislington, Bristol, at around 5.20pm yesterday (Wednesday 15 January) where sadly a man in his 40s was declared deceased by paramedics.

“His family have been notified and our thoughts are with them. They have asked for people to respect their privacy during this incredibly difficult time.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and officers are preparing a file for the coroner.”

Announcing his shock death, a statement from Independent Creative Management earlier said: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old.

“Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many.

“His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him.

“During this difficult time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Paul’s family, friends, and colleagues.”

Behind the headlines, Paul was a sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted guy

BY Oliver Grady, Assistant Showbiz Editor

Paul Danan may have grabbed his share of column inches over his all too short 46 years, from his colourful love life to his well-documented struggles with addiction, but behind the headlines, there was a very sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted guy.

I’ve met and spoken with Paul many times over the years and have always had a soft spot for him. He was funny, articulate, smart and great company.

Yes, he had his demons, but he was very open about them and was always striving to be a better version of himself.

He was extremely proud of his theatre company, The Morning After, which he set up to help fellow addicts work through their trauma through drama and acting.

While he seemed lost at times, and on several occasions opened up to me about his struggle to be taken seriously in the industry after his private life exploits overshadowed his professional accomplishments, he clearly found a purpose in supporting others and helping them stay on the path of recovery.

There was only one thing Paul was prouder of than his recovery and his theatre company, and that was his son DeNiro.

Paul lit up when he spoke about his boy, and looked forward to spending the weekends with him as he co-parented with the lad’s mum.

His whatsapp photo was him beaming with DeNiro, and he loved to talk about his offspring’s accomplishments and his hopes for his future.

It breaks my heart that DeNiro now has to go through the rest of his life without his dad, and Paul will never see him grow up.

I last heard from Paul at Christmas, when he left me a voicenote saying he had some exciting things planned for 2025.

I told him we’d catch up in the New Year, but sadly we never got the chance to.

I’ll miss you Paul. You were one of life’s good ones.

Major new golf rule introduced that would have changed Masters history

A LITTLE-KNOWN golf rule has been tweaked and it could have changed who won the Masters.

Roberto De Vicenzo birdied on the 17th hole at Augusta in 1968 – only for his playing partner Tommy Aaron to accidentally record it as a par.

Roberto De Vicenzo (left) lost the Masters to Bob Goalby (right) due to a scoring mistake[/caption]

The Argentine did not notice the mistake and signed the scorecard.

By the time the error was picked up on, the score could not be changed and De Vicenzo finished second behind by Bob Goalby by one shot that he never took.

But new rules were introduced to the PGA Tour and Masters last year that allows a player to rectify a scorecard mishap within 15 minutes of submitting it.

Now, a tweak has been made to the law to add clarity to the recent change.

Under Section 5A(5), it is now up to the tournament on how long they give players to spot a scoring mistake.

The rules read: “During 2024 the governing bodies confirmed that the Rules of Golf allow for a policy that uses a duration of time (such as 15 minutes) to define when a scorecard is returned.

“Such policies allow a player to return to the defined scoring area and correct a scorecard mistake within that duration of time, but do not change the requirement for the player to promptly proceed to the scoring area after they finish their round.

“When using such a policy, the Committee should determine both how much time is allowed as well as when it begins.

“Such as when, the player left the defined scoring area, the group completed their last hole of the round, or the player’s scorecard was entered into an electronic scoring system.”

The rule was initially changed after Jordan Spieth was disqualified from the Genesis Invitational for signing an incorrect scorecard.

The 2015 Masters champion signed for a par three on the fourth hole when he had actually landed a bogey.

It later emerged that the reason behind Spieth not checking his score properly was due to him desperately needing the toilet.
