Simon Gregson will continue to play taxi driver Steve McDonald in Coronation Street after his contract expired late last year.

The Sun can reveal he’s inked a new year-long deal with ITV to remain on screens.

A soap insider said: “Simon Gregson signed a new contract in December to stay on the show.

“He’s a soap legend so Corrie without him is unthinkable.

“He’s going through a tough time money-wise so the contract and knowledge he’ll be around for another year (and probably many years to come!) will be a relief.”

It comes after The Sun revealed Simon Gregson has been clobbered with a £40,000 bill to pay accountants liquidating his production firm.

He has been charged more than £500-an-hour by the finance chiefs.

Simon already faces losing his house over the closure of his company, which owes the tax office and a bank £165,000.

And his conduct in transferring £252,000 from Simon Gregson Productions Ltd into a private account is being probed by the government as part of the process of any bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street has will see a raft of departures over the coming months.

Stars such as Paddy Bever and Shelley King have announced they’ve left the soap.

Five other stars — Charlotte Jordan, Sue Cleaver, Sue Devaney, Colson Smith, and Luca Toolan — have announced they are leaving or being written out since November 2024.

Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025

ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap.

This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama.

Colson Smith – Craig Tinker

The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig’s on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role.

Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw

After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I’m A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she’s already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future.

Luca Toolan – Mason Radcliffe

Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him.

Sue Devaney – Debbie Webster

In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline.

Charlotte Jordan – Daisy Midgeley

The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she’s hungry to see what other opportunities await.

Shelley King – Yasmeen Metcalfe

The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.

Experts issue warning to anyone who stores their milk in the fridge door – here’s why

WHETHER you’re a classic milk drinker or enjoy a plant alternative, it’s likely you keep your carton in the door of your fridge.

While this might make sense for convenience, experts have warned against storage step.

According to a report by The Daily Express, storage pros have advised against keeping your cartons of milk on your fridge door shelf.

Most households are guilty of this error, as keeping your milk in your fridge door makes it easier to grab when making a quick cuppa.

Standing it up straight instead of lying it on its side can also reduce the chance of leaks.

However, the experts at kitchen appliance company Beko, storing your milk in your fridge door can actually cost you more money.

This is because the shelf life of your milk is reduced significantly as this part of the fridge is warmer than the shelves.

According to Beko, UK households bin about £250 worth of food per person every year.

This is the equivalent of £1,000 worth of waste for a family of four.

“The way we organise our fridges can make or break our efforts to reduce food waste,” said Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko UK.

“Most people don’t realise that poor fridge organisation isn’t just about aesthetics – it directly impacts food longevity and your household budget.”

To make your groceries last longer, experts suggest creating zones in your fridge.

“Temperature fluctuates within your fridge, so storing items in the right zones is crucial,” Salah Sun explained.

“The bottom shelf, being the coldest, is perfect for raw meats, while the middle shelves maintain ideal conditions for dairy and prepared foods.

“The door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening.”

“We recommend keeping more stable items like condiments and drinks in the door compartments, moving milk to the middle shelf where temperatures remain more constant.”

They explained that organising your fridge doesn’t just help reduce food waste.

Fridge or cupboard? The essential food storage guide

Foods must be stored correctly to keep them fresh and prevent the spread of bacteria.

Nutrition expert Birgit Brendel said bread will last longer when stored in the fridge or freezer.

However, this can compromise the flavour.

Storing in ceramic or pottery containers is an alternative that allows for air to flow easily and slow the growth of mould.

Robert Morris, managing director of food safety consultants, Complete Food Safety, revealed the best place to store fresh fruit and vegetables.

He said salad foods should be stored in the fridge drawer, but away from anything grown in the soil such as carrots, parsnips and beetroot.

Tomatoes are an exception to the rule as fridges can alter the natural ripening process and diminish their taste.

He also advised against putting avocados and bananas in the fridge as this will cause them to blacken quicker.

It can actually help you keep on track with any meal plans or healthy eating goals you may have.

“When you can see and access everything easily, you’re more likely to cook at home and make healthier choices,” Salah Sun added.

“Plus, maintaining optimal storage conditions means your fresh produce lasts longer, reducing both waste and shopping frequency.”

There are other food items you may be storing wrong in your refrigerator.

And six tips that will help make your groceries last even longer.

His heartbroken family confirmed on Friday that Law had died.

A statement from them read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Law started his career at Huddersfield Town, had two spells at Manchester City and played for Torino in Italy.

But it was at Old Trafford from 1962-73 where he made his name scoring 237 goals in 404 games.

He won two titles with United and the FA Cup and helped them to the 1968 European Cup Final where they beat Benfica although missed out on the game due to injury.

Sir Bobby Charlton, Law and George Best were integral as the Red Devils become the first English side to win the European Cup.

Man U said in a statement: “Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84.

“With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players.

“The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”

Best, Law and Charlton together scored 665 goals in 1,636 games for the club.

And each won the Ballon d’Or between 1964-68 — with Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 the only United player to do it since.

Law also scored 30 goals in 55 games for Scotland.

TRIBUTES TO ‘THE KING’

Tributes have poured in on social media from football fans in light of Denis’ death.

One said: “Very sad news that Denis Law has died – the last of the United Holy Trinity of Best, Law and Charlton.

“But Law was our King.”

Another added: “RIP Denis Law, a footballer of excellence and who I grew up watching.”

A third paid tribute, saying: “A legend of the game who began a fantastic career as a 15 year old at Leeds Road in 1955.

“RIP Denis Law.”

Countless people also expressed sadness at the news of the star’s death, with many praising him as one of the greatest players to ever grace the pitch at Old Trafford.

One user posted on X: “Very upsetting to hear about Denis Law & condolences to his family & friends.

“He was a superb & stylish footballer & lovely, happy man.

“The King was, in Denis’s case, a deserved nickname.”

Another said: “RIP to the original King of Old Trafford – Denis Law.

“A lethal goal scorer who helped put Manchester United back on the map following the Munich Air Disaster.

“Set records that lasted decades and some that remain today.

“We all love King Denis x”.

In 2021, the goalscorer revealed he was suffering from Alzheimer’s in an emotional statement.

He said he experienced anger, frustration, confusion and distress due to the condition.

There has been much research and debate into how much heading the ball has led to Alzheimer’s for a number of ex players.

Law said: “I am at the point where I feel I want to be open about my condition.

“I have been diagnosed with ‘mixed dementia’, which is more than one type of dementia, in my case this being Alzheimer’s and Vascular dementia.

“It is an incredibly challenging and problematic disease and I have witnessed many friends go through this.

“You hope that it won’t happen to you, even make jokes about it whilst ignoring the early signs because you don’t want it to be true.

“You get angry, frustrated, confused and then worried, worried for your family, as they will be the ones dealing with it.

“However the time has come to tackle this head on, excuse the pun.

“I recognise how my brain is deteriorating and how my memory evades me when I don’t want it to and how this causes me distress in situations that are beyond my control.

“I do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able, because I know there will be days when I don’t understand and I hate the thought of that right now.”

Wayne Rooney in talks for HUGE new TV job after axed by Plymouth

OUT-of-work footie boss Wayne Rooney is said to be in negotiations to be a pundit on Match of the Day.

The former England striker, 39, is eyeing up a lucrative move to the rejigged show following long-term presenter Gary Lineker’s departure at the end of this season.

He hopes to join new hosts Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates on the BBC highlights show as a rotating guest pundit.

He could command up to £200,000 for the year, depending on how many appearances he makes.

It comes after Man United great Rooney was sacked as manager of Plymouth Argyle at the end of last year, with the side rooted to the bottom of the Championship.

Last night, a source said: “Punditry is one of a number of options open to Wayne for the future.

“He worked alongside Gary and co at the Euros last summer, and was a huge hit with viewers.

“He’s also eminently likeable with a forensic knowledge and love of the game.

Match of the Day and a couple of other broadcasters are interested in having him on their programming.

“Wayne and the BBC are in early stage negotiations but it is looking promising and he is taking some time to work out exactly what he wants to do next”.

Last April, Rooney was forced to withdraw from his debut appearance on the show because of a back injury.

Meanwhile, Rooney’s 38-year-old wife Coleen has been inundated with offers following her stint in the I’m A Celebrity jungle, where she finished runner-up.

A source said: “This is going to be a massively exciting year for Coleen and Wayne — they have so many options ahead of them.”
