At least 23 dead after plane with 175 onboard veers off runway and crashes before exploding in South Korean airport

AN aircraft carrying 175 passengers and six flight attendants drove off the runway and crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, local media reports.

The aircraft was landing before it deviated from the runway and plunged into a wall on Sunday morning, with already 23 people reportedly dead.

Fire authorities were dispatched to the scene with plumes of smoke captured in images billowing from the site.

The aircraft involved in the incident is the Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, which had departed from Bangkok, Thailand, according to Yonhap News.

A Muan airport official said the airport was handing the emergency situation.

Fire authorities said a blaze had been put out and that passengers were being rescued from the plane’s tail.

The emergency office said a landing gear malfunctioned on the plane, according to AP.
